1 day 17 hours ago | Just be aware, though, that |
Just be aware, though, that some of the measurables at individual college pro days, especially the 40 times, are notoriously unreliable: hand timed by a coach who has a stake in creating buzz for his players. |

5 days 6 hours ago | Don't ignore smaller |
Don't ignore smaller airports. Occasionally there are great deals in or out of them. I've also seen people claim they were able to get better deals flying internationally flying out of Canada than the US. Also, as at least one other poster suggested, use whatever search site, Kayak, Google, to find the best deal but purchase through the airline itself (and realize that Soutwest flights are not included in those sites) to avoid possible headaches later. Southwest does not charge to check bags but most of the other airlines do. I genrally do not check a bag and have found often the airlines that do charge will offer to check a bag for free at the gate. The only catch is it has to be a carry-on size to begin with, but it can still make travelling easier not having to hassle with an extra bag for connecting flights. I always make sure my chargers, prescriptions, other essentials are in my small shoulder bag. |
1 week 1 day ago | Just curious, what two |
Just curious, what two decades worth of headlines are you talking about? Yes, a lot has come out in the past year or so, but just as an example, there was far more publicity and headlines about Payne and Appling befriending a little girl with cancer and what pillars of the community they were than anything negative about them or any other basketball players. Yes, there were people who did know (or at least should have known) some of what was going on, but they covered it up. Almost none of the sexual assaults and abuses that are leading to all this current public outcry were making headlines until recently.

1 week 1 day ago | The defense will be fine. The |
The defense will be fine. The offense will mostly be a year older with new ideas / new coaches who spent the off season examining what went wrong last year. I have have much greater confidence in new eyes being able to analyze what went wrong in a way that would have been difficult to do if all the same coaches were involved. The receiving staff will be another year older and experienced as will the returning Olinemen and QBs. Last year was a weird anomaly of inexperienced players and coaching missteps on the offensive side of the ball. There's every reason to believe things will be different this year. |
1 week 2 days ago | January 26-27 1967 22.7 |
January 26-27 1967 22.7 inches of snow in Flint. My wife grew up in the Chicago area and she remembers the snow storm there as well. But the one I remember best, since I was older, was March 16-17 1973 with 13.7 inches. Part of what makes that so memorable is that on March 15 it was 59 degrees, and everyone in the neighborhood was out that evening, enjoying the warm weather. My best friend's mother was talking about a huge snow storm that was on the way. I thought she was crazy.

1 week 3 days ago | My oldest daughter graduated |
My oldest daughter graduated from MSU in 2010. Fortunately, she never experienced any kind of assault or harrassment, so had no experience with the Title IX Office, counseling services, or campus police. I f we were going through the whole college selection process now, I doubt MSU would be her choice. I will never know for sure, of course. But, as you point out, it's the cover up (and I would also add what sure looks like victim blaming / shaming by various administrators as well) that makes this even worse. And it is this circle the wagons, head in the sand, attempts to protect the brand, victims be damned approach that has me most upset. I don't donate large sums of money to any university, but I will certainly not be giving even one more cent to MSU for the foreseeable future. If all the powers that be are concerned about is dollars and cents and believe that their public statements are part of a PR and legal strategy to limit liability in law suits, they better start paying attention to in-coming money as well, because I have to believe I'm not the only donor / potential donor who is this pissed off about MSU's response. MasterCard is already pulling funding for a scholarship program it has at MSU |

1 week 5 days ago | The sports radio stations in |
The sports radio stations in Oklahoma have been talking about the Oklahoma Spring Football game for over a week. Lincoln Riley is hoping for 80,000 fans, mainly because there are some recruits taking their official visits and Riley wants to show them how well loved the Sooner football team is by the fans. They are having a concert with Trace Adkins before the game as well as an unveiling of a statue of Bob Stoops, photo ops with Baker Mayfield, food trucks, and other promotions to try to get a large crowd. With student athletes now allowed to take their official visits earlier, I wonder how many programs will encourage visits during spring games and what steps coaches / programs will take to ensure the recruits see a large, enthusiastic crowd. |

A couple I remember from my childhood but haven't seen in a long time: Nik-L-Nips (had to look it up to see what they were called--little wax bottles filled with flavored liquid). Bite off the top, suck out the liquid, then chew the wax for awhile. Candy cigarettes--I have actually seen something similar--candy sticks but without the red tip on the end and the packaging to make them look like a pack of cigarettes. |
2 weeks 1 day ago | I'm not so sure that's true. |
I'm not so sure that's true. Michigan had a basketball player several years back who graduated and had another year of eligibility left and would have stayed but was not accepted into the graduate program he wanted. It happens. Some of the graduate programs are very selective in who they accept, and no amount of athletic prowess will make up for any perceived academic shortcomings there might be. |
2 weeks 2 days ago | For me it was definitely |
For me it was definitely Poole's shot to win the game against Houston. In addition to the timing and what was at stake, I had the good fortune to witness it in person. The only downside was there was only one other Michigan fan in the entire section I was in, and we were nowhere near each other. Even being around Houston fans would have been better than the indifference of the Kansas fans who were surrounding me. They thought it was cool to see a last second shot win the game, but they really didn't care which team won. |

"Even knowing the results of the season, I am kind of intrigued by this series and might give it a chance." This is similar to my thinking, and that doesn't bode well for the show having very many viewers. I have Amazon Prime, so that's not an issue, and I am definitely a Michigan football fan, but knowing the way the season turned out makes me not all that enthusiastic about the show. If it were about last year, the year before, or (I'm hopeful about) almost any future season, I would be more inclined to tune in. |
2 weeks 5 days ago | My wife had a Camaro when we |
My wife had a Camaro when we first met that she still gets nostalgic about and remembers it in a much different way than I do. It looked nice but was really nearly worthless. It was a 79 base model with six cylinder that had been wrecked and rebuilt before my wife bought it. I think it had as much bondo as metal, and when we tried to trade it in on a new car (first baby was on the way and we wanted something safer), the dealer said there was no way they could ever make the car safe or sound enough to re-sell. I think I sold it for $500 (in 1989) to a guy who understood exactly what he was getting and didn't care. There was a 16 year old kid that looked at it with his father who really wanted it. His father and I both told him he needed to keep looking for something more solid. |
3 weeks 3 days ago | I don't care that they're |
I don't care that they're monitoring news stories or people's social media accounts. What bothers me is the amount of money they spent doing so for about a month of work. From the story: The work by Weber Shandwick, a New York-based firm, totaled $517,343 for more than 1,440 hours of work, according to documents obtained through a public records request. The firm billed for work done by 18 different employees, whose hourly rates ranged from $200 to $600 per hour. Five of those employees billed MSU for more than $50,000, including one who billed for $96,900 and another who billed for $120,893.

3 weeks 5 days ago | Might not Loyola's playing |
Might not Loyola's playing games against a Yaklich defense give them some insight into how Michigan's defense works as well? Otoh, essentially every Michigan game going back several years is available to view. I'm not sure how many of Loyola's games are. Also, seeing them in person, as Yaklich did probably affords some insight that video might not be able to provide. |
3 weeks 5 days ago | Sampson is who came to mind |
Sampson is who came to mind for me as well. His post-game comments were salty and a bit delusional as well, claiming Houston was the better team. At the time, it made me wonder if he just really dislikes Beilein because a) he's clean, and b) he's a better coach. |

Under the "Useful Stuff" tab at the top of the screen, there is a thread about Ann Arbor restaurants and bars, but it is several years old. Still, it might have some places still around that nobody has mentioned yet (as well as, I'm sure, several places that are now closed): |
5 weeks 23 hours ago | Yeah, mine ended up being |
Yeah, mine ended up being $315 + taxes and fee to pickup. It was in the lower bowl in the corner, just 10 rows up from the floor, so it was a pretty decent seat. I'm just a cheapskate. There were only 5 tickets left when I bought mine, two people selling two tickets, and one selling the one. If that one hadn't been available, I wouldn't have gone. No way would I have paid what would have been well over $700 for one ticket. There was one saving grace, though. I hadn't used Stubhub in awhile, so I had to go through getting the email to reset my password. The email took about 5 minutes to come through, and I was sweating bullets thinking the ticket would be sold. I opened another window to make sure the ticket was still available, and the price had dropped some (can't remember how much), so I took it out of my cart and put it back in. By the time I made it to the pickup location, a bar near the arena, it was already nearly halftime of the Kansas game. |
5 weeks 1 day ago | I was opposite end of the |
I was opposite end of the court (in the second half) from where Gray was driving, so I couldn't really tell if he was getting hacked or not, but the frequency of his whining and complaining was easy to see all the way across the court. I've seen plenty of times where Zavier Simpson gets hammered driving to the basket (not so much in this game) and he just dusts himself off and hustles back down court to play defense. |
5 weeks 1 day ago | If she ever finds out how |
If she ever finds out how much I had to pay for the game ticket, I might be in hot water. With the late start for the game and a 2 1/2 hour drive, she insisted I get a hotel room for the night. I assumed ticket prices would plummet as the first game started and the Kansas fans would give up trying to buy them. I forgot to factor in how basketball crazy Kansans are which kept the prices high. By the time I got to the hotel and got online just before the Kansas game started, there were only a handful of tickets left to be had, and I ended up paying over $300 for a ticket with a face value of $90. In my mind, it was money well spent (I would probably be singing a different tune, though, if we lost). |

I was in section 119, row J, seat 9. Most of the rest of my row were Wichita State fans, and left their seats with about 4 minutes left in the game. For their sake, I hope they were at the top of the stairs and weren't already heading out to their cars. We didn't have subs, but it was crazy! |
5 weeks 1 day ago | Speaking of the band, I was |
Speaking of the band, I was sitting right next to the tunnel where the band came through just before the Kansas game ended. There was an officious woman stopping some of the band members. At first I thought she wasn't letting them in because it was too early for them to enter, but then I realized she was letting most of them through. I looked closer, and she was preventing anyone from bringing in a bottle of water or gatorade or whatever, and making them poor the contents into an NCAA labeled cup before allowing them to pass by. |
5 weeks 1 day ago | He does have a quick release |
He does have a quick release and can hit those long threes, but he was constantly whining to the refs every time he drove the ball towards the basket and missed a shot. I don't know how much of that they showed on tv, but at one point in the arena, fans were chanting "baby, baby" and that was mostly the Kansas fans in the area I was sitting, including two boys about 10 or 12 years old who were sitting behind me. |
