I agree with most of your observations, but not "They did not commit many errors." Perhaps it's in how you define errors, but I would include penalties as errors, and so far this season, Utah is one of the most penalized teams in the country. They had 7 penalties in their first game and 12 in their second game.

Just guessing here, but it seems to have been around for a long time and harkens back to a time when games ended in single digit scores and playing for field position was considered all important. In such a scenario, with a good kicker and defense, a team might elect to kick off and attempt to pin a team deep at the other end of the field. It's not really very complicated and is pretty hard to screw up.
|1 day 6 hours ago||There is no advantage to||
There is no advantage to kicking off twice, which is why it doesn't happen unless someone screws up their choice. That's why teams that win the coin toss either elect to recieve the kickoff, or defer to the second half (get to choose whether to kick or receive at the start of the second half). In the Michigan game screw up mentioned above, I thought it was whoever was captain elected to kick off after winning the coin toss, and the other team elected to receive at the start of the second half. Either way, it was a mistake and rarely happens.
Edit: Texas screwed this up in their game with UCLA. UCLA won the toss, deferred their choice to the second half. Texas chose to kick off, and UCLA chose to receive at the start of the second half:

The few Utah fan posts I've seen all seem to expect a Utah victory, but I do think a lot of that is driven by last year keeping up with some teams that were supposed to demolish them and this year's Michigan-ND game, which to be honest, if I were to see that score as a Utah fan, I'd probably think the same thing. Like Michigan, Utah has a new OC this year, but they haven't played against even a mediocre defense yet. The Michigan game will be their first true test.

I agree. And while Miami is on a muti-season losing streak, I will be surprised if they don't manage at least 2 or 3 wins this year. Now, that's still not saying a lot, and definitely doesn't put them as a team that should have been able to hang with Michigan for a half, but they do seem to be heading in the right direction.

I got sent to the equipment room in 6th grade for organizing a sit down strike when the gym teacher decided to let the other kickball team keep trying after three outs. I was none too pleased at the time, but in retrospect, it was one of my finer moments during elementary school.

A better, more balanced question, would be "How does having Funchess out of the lineup affect your offense?

If you look at the video, Hoke actually had headphones on during that timeout. I blame it on the headphones.

They had the video, but they might not have known who it was. I wonder if the publicity about his game against Purdue is what led someone to see his photo and realize it might be Rawls on the tape.

Yikes! If the allegations are true, I'm just baffled how a college graduate could be so ignorant. The usual "he's just a kid" doesn't apply here.

I added BTN to watch the Michigan game, and did watch much of the Rutgers-Penn St. game. What a crapfest! And sticking with a theme, the commentators sure did go out of their way to polish that turd of a game.

It could have something to do with the fact that he grew up in Seattle and during his lifetime Michigan's record against Washington was 4-0 with point totals of 126-10.
Edit: There were only three games between Michigan and Washington during Hendrix's lifetime (the fourth I listed above ocurred 8 days after he died). The correct record is 3-0 with point totals of 109-7.

There's an interesting quote from a Syracuse reporter, but it's not clear if he has more information than anyone else is reporting or if he just jumped to this conclusion based on the cryptic message CMU released.
"It's only fair to acknowledge that Shafer — the head coach who has now led Syracuse to only its second 2-0 start since 1999 — was aided, along with his peeps, by the absence of the Chips' nightmare, running back Thomas Rawls, who foolishly chose on Friday to break a team rule and was thus suspended for the contest."

I don't think they did get screwed by the refs. I think Nuss was just too lackadaisical and didn't pay attention to the play clock starting. Even though it sucked for Michigan, I wish the refs would do that more often. If it's a 30 second time out, why should the offensive team get to stretch it out even longer, just because the coaches want to keep talking to the players?

I don't think that was the problem. I think they started the play clock and Nuss was still talking to Gardner and Michigan didn't get lined up until there was less than 10 seconds left. That one was on Nussmeier.

I don't understand why BTN has two channels if they are going to show the same thing on both channels even if one game runs long.
