Revoking scholarship isn't the answer. For one that is just wrong, Two a player could just say they tweaked an ankle and is injured and thus can't play in the bowl game. Or if the university told a player they would do revoke a scholarship, they could go out on the field and just stand back 20 yards from the play and do nothing. Or just keep jumping offside so that the coach is forced to take you out of the game. They still register as playing, but the player at that point doesn't have to listen to their coach or make any attempt to help their team win.
The only two ways to reduce this are to increase the playoffs (again not going to end it) and pay players. You are still going to have players sitting out, but players that are mid-rounders or on the fence are more likely to play if they get paid $5,000 - $10,000. If they really want to get more participation they could say the winning players gets money(or more money) that way the player feels a little more obligated to help teammates/friends win some money.
I have no insider knowledge, but I can't imagine he would be interested in Michigan. There are no known Michigan Ties and we are loaded with young WR talent. 2 of those guys will be multi-year starters by the time he is able to play. He is coming from an Air-Raid offense, so would be used dramatically different. Basically there almost a zero percent chance he would come to Michigan. If I was a betting man...Which I am. I would put money that he lands at Georgia.
Michigan isn't very good in night games. I have no idea how you think we would be more competitive. Since 2012 Michigan is 6 - 12 in games that started after 5pm EST. Jim Harbaugh himself is 3 - 5 in nights games at Michigan. Think about that. Harbaugh is 25 - 6 in games before 5pm, but 3 - 5 after. Those 3 wins were Rutgers and Minnesota twice (one of which Minnesota's coach lost by his foolish time management)
CBS has him ranked as the #1 ranked DT. I do think teams are scared off by his heart condition though. Nick Fairly had the same thing or at least very similar, and he had to miss all of 2017 and his career is in Jeoperdy. Also a very small knock on him is his size. He weigh's the least out of the top 15 DT's in this years draft. Most have him outweighed by 20 - 30 lbs and some even more. I think he will be fine against the run, but there could be GM's who see the heart and the size combo and think he is a little bit of a gamble (again not what I think).
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see the Lions grab him in the 2nd though. I was even rooting for them to pick him with their number 20 pick, so if we have a chnace in the 2nd round I would hope they take that!
So for a few reasons, I think McCray will be a decent Linebacker in the NFL
Unlike Michigan's defense, NFL defenses aren't going to play solely agressive Man to Man defense 95% of the time. More often then not he is going to be in zone or if he is man to man he is going to have a safety or two over the top. Honestly I don't think very many true LB's could hang with Shaquan Barklay when they have to guard him Man to Man with no help. So a part of his issue was honestly Michigan's aggresive defense wasn't the best fit for him.
NFL RB's don't go out for long routes that often. in the Super Bowl there was 1 RB route longer than 10 yards. Le'Veon Bell (2nd most targeted back in the NFL) from week 11 - 16 had two routes in that span that took him past 5 yards down the field. NFL RB's are usually responsible for staying back to block or at least chip first.
Full wheel routes aren't near as effective in the NFL. The NFL has much closer together hash markers not allowing for as much space on the outside. Also like response 2, most backs are charged with at least chipping a pass rusher.
McCray wasn't great, but I thought the latter half of his season (especially after PSU) he improved. In the Senior bowl PFF scored him as the highest graded Linebacker at the Senior Bowl including 2 pass breakups.
Now i'm not saying he is going to be a round 1 - 3 guy. But I think he has potential to work his way into a 5th round type guy. Possibly even being a starter down the road.
Yeah he had 59 yards if passing with Senior WR's and Senior Jake Butt. But you are right Fisch is a Genius for being able to muster up 59 yards passing in a game!!
I don't understand how people can compare last years offense to this one and say that the passing game coordinator is doing a bad job. Let's do a run down of what we lost:
Both our starting Senior Recievers who are now in the NFL. (on top of that we lost our best WR this year when Black went down)
3 of our top 5 offensive lineman. Plus we still don't have Newsome (so really 4 out of 5 starters from the start of last year)
Our two top TE's, one of which was the best TE in the nation (Asaisi was our 2nd best te last year)
And our starting RB - Smith wasn't as big of a playmaker. But was a much better pass blocker then any of our RB's. And would always fight for a couple needed yards.
Then we lost our Starting QB to injury!!
I don't care who takes over our offense, there was going to be a BIG dropoff. Everyone says look at what Fisch did last year. Well, Do you know what a Fisch led passing game did with John O'Korn at QB?? 59 yards!! Yes that was against Indiana.

He used the NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship game as an example (Because this was within a few weeks of that event). It didn't start until 9pm EST on a Monday. Most 8 - 14 year olds can't stay up to watch a game that late on a school night. This may push more younger kids away from watching big games, which will decrease the likielyhood of them being fans.
He didn't mention this next part, but kids now a days have so much more content to watch, that sports aren't always their first choice. I was born at the beginning of the 80's, so when I was was a kid we didn't have many choices and we only had 1 tv (until I was 9 or 10). So we were typically watching one of only a few shows like Magyver, Cheers, Who's the boss or Sports. There wasn't endless programing on the Internet (what's that??), 100's of channels, or multiple devices to watch content on. I know I am a bigger fan of sports now because we didn't have all of those choices and only 1 tv. So when my dad watched sports, I either had to mind my own business or sit there and watch sports with him.

Walton is a guard, so I assume you are talking about Sims over Wilson. I do think Sims was a slightly better player overall, but I like Wilson a tad more in Small Ball. The reasons are because Wilson's shooting and Defensive Flexability are much better then Sims. Sims was not a 3 point threat at all. He had a decent mid range game, but that doesn't stretch the floor near as well as a good 3 point shooter (Which helps open the door for back cuts by Robinson or anyone else). Also on defense there was no way Sims was staying with smaller guards, whereas DJ could. For a true small ball lineup, I think you have to go Wilson.
I like the guy, but I doubt he would take our LB's to ELITE by himself. The dude barely played defense in high school and not one service even rated him as a Linebacker. On top of that we already have 3 studs at LB coming in this year who I like a lot more then Vic at LB (who has barely played that position for the last 3-4 years). Even if he came here as a LB, I highly doubt he would be a starter 2 years from now. Possibly not even on the 2 deep since we have a lot of young talent and he really doesn't have much experience.
I know the point of the article is that he most likely won't be playing this year against us. But I have an honest question. Since hHe already redshirted in 2015, is a player allowed to redshirt twice without medical hardship? Wouldn't he just lose a year of eligability?
I totally agree about his measurables being great, but DJ is not ridiculously athletic.Is he a good athlete yes, but not ridiculous. He's got above average quickness for his size, he's not going to leap out of the gym (uses his length and height to dunk and block shots), and below average in strength. What about that says ridiculous athlete?
I don't really understand the reasoning. I totally understand that reasoning if the player was a lottery type, because they have more room to fall with a bad showing then gain. But wouldn't a fringe first round player want to showcase his talent in every way possible? If I were a GM, and a fringe first rounder was a healthy scratch from 5 on 5's, I would take that as a negative on that player. Not a huge negative, but still a negative. I'm no GM or expert on player personel though, so maybe this happens all of the time or it's not as big of a deal. Just me not understanding the reasoning on why sitting out of an event actually "optimizes" someones draft stock.
The NCAA just lifts the waiver on having to sit out a year, but Clemson still has to grant release. If you remember last year Michigan basketball got some flack because Michigan originally told Spike that they would block him from transfering to a Big Ten School or any school on their scedule. They ended up waiving that and Spike transfered to Purdue. From what I understand it is pretty common to not allow a player to transfer to a school on their schedule next year.

Even though we didn't take a TE, our TE position is not automatic playing time. When He steps on campus you will have , RS Sen Ian Bunting, RS Junior Gentry, RS Junior Wheatley, RS Soph Nick Eubanks, RS Soph Sean McKeon. Plus on top of that, Michigan could take 3 TE's this class. Playing early would not be a given. And actually I am not super familiar with Miami's roster. But a quick search shows they don't have many TE's on their roster. They are a pro-style offense that also uses their TE's. So Playing time actually could be easier there.
Not sure why people are so hung up on his dad played here. My dad graduated from Michigan St, but I never wanted to go there. Where my dad went to college didn't play a roll in any sort of way when I was picking my college.
While I think that Archie Miller is a good coach, he is replacing Tom Crean who has won the big ten outright 2 times in the last 5 years. Where Brad Underwood is replacing John Groce who hasn't even made the NCAA tournament the last 4 years, and hasn't even been close to competing for a Big Ten Championship in his 5 year tenure. Illinois should and will be better then they were in the Groce Era.
Like others said I'm sure Oregon was instructed to foul the instant anyone gets by you. That would just led to an even later inbounds play. The other thing I don't think people are thinking about is that Walton isn't the type that is going to burn people off his first step dribble. In order for him to get free he typically needs a screen. With 9 seconds left and pressure forcing them well past the 3 point line, it would have been hard for him to make it to the hoop even if they didn't have fouls to give.
That exact shot is why he has been so good of late and one of the main reason we even made to this point. So I was and am extremely happy with that shot choice!
I don't think officiating was that bad either. Yes there was the travel and questionable DJ 2nd foul. But there isn't a game in the world where 1 team hasn't thought there was a bad call or two.
Also I don't want fouls to be reviewable. If the officials review every foul, this will greatly decrease the flow of the game. I already think there are way too many tv timeouts (why do you need a TV timeout every 4 minutes? Especially if there was just a timeout or stopage within the last minute?)

The rebound on the free throw was given up by Wilson, so subing Duncan for Wagner or Donnal wouldn't have mattered. Wilson still is the one who got beat.
Even if you subbed Donnal in, then you lose a ball handler once Oregon pressures (which being down they would have). Don't get me wrong Robinson is not a great ball handler, but I would much rather him take the ball down the court in that scenario then Donnal.
I'm actually also not sure what the rule is for substituting before a 1 and 1. I know when there are 2 free throws awarded, teams are not allowed to sub before the 1st free throw.
It's easy for people to sit back and 2nd guess after the fact. But If Donnal comes in and misses a box out or turns the ball over then the same people will be complaining that he was in.
I am not going this year, but I have been to a few years of NCAA tournament games. As AliWeezy said, there is typically no Re-entry if you leave. So this idea wouldn't work. You have to buy the ticket for both games!

Speed is hard to get much better at in just a couple months. Some people just have it and some people don't. I'm not saying you can't get faster, but people act like if you train for a month and a half, then you are going to knock off .2 or .3 seconds off your time. That's not going to happen! I've never considered him a burner, so his time really isn't too much off from what I would have guessed.
Also I'm not wild about people questioning a kid's work ethic when they have no clue what is going on with him. Even if he didn't get much training in, you don't know why. He could still be in a full workload of classes, he could have been sick or injured which prevented him from training, or he could have busted his butt training and this is the best he could do.

That last play was just a ballsy call by Collins and Northwestern. If no one touches the ball and it is thrown out of bounds, then Michigan gets the ball under their basket with no time taken off. Most coaches in that same position just throw a short pass and let them throw a prayer up and settle for overtime.
Beilien almost gave away this game by dribbling out the clock starting at 6 minutes left in the game. If it wasn't for a last second off balanced duck under Swanigan hail Mary 3 By Walton with a minute left, then this is a lot closer or a loss.
Also I'm sure this is on Irvin. But around 2 minutes left they were up 8 and we had a 3 on 2 fast break after beating the press. Both defenders committed to Irvin who was dribbling and the 3 point shooter. Wagner would have had the easiest dunk of the night. Yet Irvin pulls up and dribbles back. We didn't score. That would put us up 10 and give some momentum back to us. Instead we force a shot and miss and Purdue quickly scores to be down 6. I understand don't force it if not there, but that was free points. You always take those.
Teske looked awful on both ends of the floor. He played 2 minutes had 1 turnover, and another pass that hit his hands that was a tough catch, but still should have been caught. He didn't get charged with that turnover, but Moe Wagner or donnal makes that catch and there isn't a turnover there. I think his plus/minus was -6 and he only played 2 minutes. #SitTeske
I'm not saying Stafford is a top 5 Quarterback. In my thought he is a boarderline top 10ish QB, but he isn't awful and I don't think he is the main issue with this team. The Lions lack talent everywhere. PFF grades only him and Prater in the top 10 of their position group. The Lions don't have an Elite player at any position (including QB).
I could be wrong, but alot of those offensive rebounds came when Morgan was off the court. I can remember a handful of them coming when Horford was on the court.

I don't think anyone thinks Drevno has complete control of our offense, because he doesn't. But he plays a big hand in it.
He coached under Harbaugh for 49er's and no word on his job status yet since Chip Kelly got fired. As a player he had 1,400+ rushing yards as a FB. He won 2 Super Bowl rings. As a coach he has been coaching since 1997 and had a 3 year stint as Lions RB coach.
Out of state Tuition is actually closer to $60k - $65k (with housing, fees, etc) a year. Lets say they are in school 5 years (not all students graduate in 4 years or take grad courses). Your talking about $300k - $325k
Another factor that you should think about is number of kids. If a person were to have 5 kids that he was going to pay college for, that's $1.5 Million just in College Tuition. That's a lot of money, I don't care who you are.
On a completly different thought process. Let's say the rich parent does budget $300k for student to go to college. He gives the kid an option that he can take a prefered walk-on, and makes his team marginally better (maybe) by freeing up one scholarship. Or he can take the scholarship (no cost to parent) and use that 300k for a house after college. What do you think most 18 year olds would do?
Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to having a Starting QB returning, but just because a team doesn't have a returning qb doesn't mean they are going to be bad or the divisions would be "unbalanced". This year 5 of the top 9 teams in the final college football playoff rankings didn't have a returning starting qb. Again most teams would prefer to have a starting QB returning, but sometime it can actually be a good or neutral thing for a team.
I watched most of that ND vs NC State game and that was truley one of the worst game plans i've ever seen. ND threw 26 passes in a hurricane. They didn't see committed to the run, and gave their running qb only 1 snap the whole game.
That game was actually 2011. Rich Rod was still our coach in 2010. But I do agree with you on the Iowa game. That game still makes me sick. Over and over they kept lining Denard under center and trying to make him a pocket passer until it was too late and we were down a few scores.

In their base offense (non hurry time late in game while behind). Michigan ran 49 plays. Of that, only 22 were run in shotgun. That means 27 plays with Denard Robinson under center. To help you remember how much better Denard and our offense was in shotgun, look at the run breakdown for that game:
If Riddick was 100% I would role with Riddick, but he is banged up and still questionable. Even if he does go in the game, I would imagine that he gives up some time to Zenner and Washington who has played pretty good the last couple games. Edelman is playing Denver, but I have to assume he still sees 6 - 10 targets.

So we were typically watching one of only a few shows like Magyver, Cheers, Who's the boss or Sports. There wasn't endless programing on the Internet (what's that??), 100's of channels, or multiple devices to watch content on. I know I am a bigger fan of sports now because we didn't have all of those choices and only 1 tv. So when my dad watched sports, I either had to mind my own business or sit there and watch sports with him.
Bill Russell retired 45 years ago. How are you going to bring up something from when over half your fan base probably wasn't even born?? I don't know or care if you are right, but that is a stupid argument to bring something up so long ago.
You can't beat original and Code Red. Arby's recently started carrying game fuel, which is a nice change of pace for a fast food place.
Walton is a guard, so I assume you are talking about Sims over Wilson. I do think Sims was a slightly better player overall, but I like Wilson a tad more in Small Ball. The reasons are because Wilson's shooting and Defensive Flexability are much better then Sims. Sims was not a 3 point threat at all. He had a decent mid range game, but that doesn't stretch the floor near as well as a good 3 point shooter (Which helps open the door for back cuts by Robinson or anyone else). Also on defense there was no way Sims was staying with smaller guards, whereas DJ could. For a true small ball lineup, I think you have to go Wilson.

I like the guy, but I doubt he would take our LB's to ELITE by himself. The dude barely played defense in high school and not one service even rated him as a Linebacker. On top of that we already have 3 studs at LB coming in this year who I like a lot more then Vic at LB (who has barely played that position for the last 3-4 years). Even if he came here as a LB, I highly doubt he would be a starter 2 years from now. Possibly not even on the 2 deep since we have a lot of young talent and he really doesn't have much experience.
I know the point of the article is that he most likely won't be playing this year against us. But I have an honest question. Since hHe already redshirted in 2015, is a player allowed to redshirt twice without medical hardship? Wouldn't he just lose a year of eligability?
I totally agree about his measurables being great, but DJ is not ridiculously athletic.Is he a good athlete yes, but not ridiculous. He's got above average quickness for his size, he's not going to leap out of the gym (uses his length and height to dunk and block shots), and below average in strength. What about that says ridiculous athlete?
I don't really understand the reasoning. I totally understand that reasoning if the player was a lottery type, because they have more room to fall with a bad showing then gain. But wouldn't a fringe first round player want to showcase his talent in every way possible? If I were a GM, and a fringe first rounder was a healthy scratch from 5 on 5's, I would take that as a negative on that player. Not a huge negative, but still a negative. I'm no GM or expert on player personel though, so maybe this happens all of the time or it's not as big of a deal. Just me not understanding the reasoning on why sitting out of an event actually "optimizes" someones draft stock.
The NCAA just lifts the waiver on having to sit out a year, but Clemson still has to grant release. If you remember last year Michigan basketball got some flack because Michigan originally told Spike that they would block him from transfering to a Big Ten School or any school on their scedule. They ended up waiving that and Spike transfered to Purdue. From what I understand it is pretty common to not allow a player to transfer to a school on their schedule next year.

While I think that Archie Miller is a good coach, he is replacing Tom Crean who has won the big ten outright 2 times in the last 5 years. Where Brad Underwood is replacing John Groce who hasn't even made the NCAA tournament the last 4 years, and hasn't even been close to competing for a Big Ten Championship in his 5 year tenure. Illinois should and will be better then they were in the Groce Era.
Like others said I'm sure Oregon was instructed to foul the instant anyone gets by you. That would just led to an even later inbounds play. The other thing I don't think people are thinking about is that Walton isn't the type that is going to burn people off his first step dribble. In order for him to get free he typically needs a screen. With 9 seconds left and pressure forcing them well past the 3 point line, it would have been hard for him to make it to the hoop even if they didn't have fouls to give.
That exact shot is why he has been so good of late and one of the main reason we even made to this point. So I was and am extremely happy with that shot choice!
I don't think officiating was that bad either. Yes there was the travel and questionable DJ 2nd foul. But there isn't a game in the world where 1 team hasn't thought there was a bad call or two.
Also I don't want fouls to be reviewable. If the officials review every foul, this will greatly decrease the flow of the game. I already think there are way too many tv timeouts (why do you need a TV timeout every 4 minutes? Especially if there was just a timeout or stopage within the last minute?)
That distinction goes to Dillion Brooks. Don't get me wrong Boucher is good and they have and will miss him. But he is not their best player. He was a very very good 6th man, but Dillion Brooks is their best player.
I'm actually also not sure what the rule is for substituting before a 1 and 1. I know when there are 2 free throws awarded, teams are not allowed to sub before the 1st free throw.
It's easy for people to sit back and 2nd guess after the fact. But If Donnal comes in and misses a box out or turns the ball over then the same people will be complaining that he was in.

I am not going this year, but I have been to a few years of NCAA tournament games. As AliWeezy said, there is typically no Re-entry if you leave. So this idea wouldn't work. You have to buy the ticket for both games!
I can't imagine that a Big Ten Tournament title and a 7 seed in the NCAA tournament is going to factor much in to recruiting. Are recruits going to be like "Wow Michigan is a 7 seed so I want to go there"...No I don't think so.

Speed is hard to get much better at in just a couple months. Some people just have it and some people don't. I'm not saying you can't get faster, but people act like if you train for a month and a half, then you are going to knock off .2 or .3 seconds off your time. That's not going to happen! I've never considered him a burner, so his time really isn't too much off from what I would have guessed.
Also I'm not wild about people questioning a kid's work ethic when they have no clue what is going on with him. Even if he didn't get much training in, you don't know why. He could still be in a full workload of classes, he could have been sick or injured which prevented him from training, or he could have busted his butt training and this is the best he could do.
Come on bro. The only way Michigan would have got a 6 seed is to Win out, that's including the tournament. One road loss at the buzzer to a pretty decent team is not going to change our seeding too much.
That last play was just a ballsy call by Collins and Northwestern. If no one touches the ball and it is thrown out of bounds, then Michigan gets the ball under their basket with no time taken off. Most coaches in that same position just throw a short pass and let them throw a prayer up and settle for overtime.
Teske looked awful on both ends of the floor. He played 2 minutes had 1 turnover, and another pass that hit his hands that was a tough catch, but still should have been caught. He didn't get charged with that turnover, but Moe Wagner or donnal makes that catch and there isn't a turnover there. I think his plus/minus was -6 and he only played 2 minutes. #SitTeske
I'm not saying Stafford is a top 5 Quarterback. In my thought he is a boarderline top 10ish QB, but he isn't awful and I don't think he is the main issue with this team. The Lions lack talent everywhere. PFF grades only him and Prater in the top 10 of their position group. The Lions don't have an Elite player at any position (including QB).
I could be wrong, but alot of those offensive rebounds came when Morgan was off the court. I can remember a handful of them coming when Horford was on the court.

And I guess I am not sure how you don't think Durkin or Ash ran theirs? Durkin ran Michigan's defense with Harbaugh as coach who is more of an offensive minded coach. Ash ran OSU's defense with a offensive minded coach in Urban. Did both of the coaches have input? I am sure they did, but that doesn't mean they didn't run their defenses.
I don't think anyone thinks Drevno has complete control of our offense, because he doesn't. But he plays a big hand in it.
He coached under Harbaugh for 49er's and no word on his job status yet since Chip Kelly got fired. As a player he had 1,400+ rushing yards as a FB. He won 2 Super Bowl rings. As a coach he has been coaching since 1997 and had a 3 year stint as Lions RB coach.
There are a couple other thoughts about this:
Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to having a Starting QB returning, but just because a team doesn't have a returning qb doesn't mean they are going to be bad or the divisions would be "unbalanced". This year 5 of the top 9 teams in the final college football playoff rankings didn't have a returning starting qb. Again most teams would prefer to have a starting QB returning, but sometime it can actually be a good or neutral thing for a team.
I watched most of that ND vs NC State game and that was truley one of the worst game plans i've ever seen. ND threw 26 passes in a hurricane. They didn't see committed to the run, and gave their running qb only 1 snap the whole game.
That game was actually 2011. Rich Rod was still our coach in 2010. But I do agree with you on the Iowa game. That game still makes me sick. Over and over they kept lining Denard under center and trying to make him a pocket passer until it was too late and we were down a few scores.
I looked up the Mgoblog offense for that game and look at these numbers:
In their base offense (non hurry time late in game while behind). Michigan ran 49 plays. Of that, only 22 were run in shotgun. That means 27 plays with Denard Robinson under center. To help you remember how much better Denard and our offense was in shotgun, look at the run breakdown for that game:
Ace package: 6 carries at 2.6 YPC
I-Form Package: 11 carries at 3.4 YPC
Shotgun: 15 caries at 6.3 YPC
If Riddick was 100% I would role with Riddick, but he is banged up and still questionable. Even if he does go in the game, I would imagine that he gives up some time to Zenner and Washington who has played pretty good the last couple games. Edelman is playing Denver, but I have to assume he still sees 6 - 10 targets.
