A Mac Book Pro retina display from this past fall. It is by far the best computer I have ever owned. Light, powerful and reliable. The only downside is the hard drive size, but the ssd drive is so fast I actually don't mind handing to carry an external.

You get what you pay for. Apples stuff is more expensive because they test the shit out of their hardware configurations to make sure it works correctly. After using windows for 15+ years I switched and il never go back. Besides, if you ever want to use windows, just get parallels or something like that. Best of both worlds.

7 weeks 2 days ago I'm with you.

I may be the only one.  And I am really embarrased for this board right now.

7 weeks 2 days ago The problem

Is what people are finding funny.  Just because I think that you shouldn't laugh at other people's misforture/mistreatment doesn't make me a jerk.  And, laughing at racist/sexist jokes might just be wrong!

7 weeks 2 days ago The problem...

isn't the medium with which you're voicing that opinion.  The problem is that you have that opinion at all.

7 weeks 2 days ago Ummm...

Some of us don't have jobs that allow us to post a ton.  I usually only post when I can offer useful info on a topic, or when someone is posting something offensive.  Like the other poster said, you may just consider this a harmless joke, but it's not.  My wife volunteers for Safehouse here in A2.  You would not believe the things that happen to women here.  And this is an educated, low crime area!  Sorry if my response is strong, but you hit a nerve.  As a man, I'm tired of seeing other men make disparaging jokes about women.  So please don't.

And I usually do enjoy your posts.  Just becuase I don't post a lot, doesn't mean I don't check the site...obsessively.

I'm not sure the whole "wall street" thing is good thow out right now if your intention is to look smart. Are all the sub primes belong to you??

13 weeks 4 days ago That sucks...

Do the surgery, follow the doctor's instructions.  If they tell you not to walk on it, then don't.  Do the PT, do your exercises at home.

Shower the morning before surgery, because you may not be able to for a few weeks after.  (that really sucked...)

As soon as you can after surgery, get Vitamin E gel caps.  Pop (as in break open) one a day and smear it all over your incision.  My doc couldn't believe how fast my incision healed and how good it looked.  Oh, and if you don't want a scar (minimize it anyway), keep the incision out of the sun as long as you can.

You're going to build up scar tissue from inactivity, so when there's a terrible ripping noise in PT after the surgery, don't freak.

Don't rush the PT after the fact or you'll get tendonitis and back to crutches you go.

Hopefully your tear won't be as bad as mine was, I was on crutches for like a year.  :(  Anyway, there's a summary of my ACL tear experience.  Good luck!

14 weeks 18 hours ago I can't get over...

The body language and the apparent attitude of the team during last night's game.  I understand that we're young and building a toughness is going to take some time, but there appears to be no leadership from any of the players.  That is really concerning me and making me feel like we may be lucky to make the round of 32.

The other huge concern is the lack of a third offensive option when shots aren't falling and teams are shutting down the pick and roll.  If those two things get taken away from us we do not seem to have a thrid option.  To me, that is coaching.

14 weeks 1 day ago Agree.

CJ Lee leaves, team lacks leadship and nose dives.  Zack Novak/Stu Douglas leave...  This slow start on the road thing is no longer a fluke.

14 weeks 1 day ago Umm..

Who's job is it to have the team ready to play?  Whose job is it to have contingencies in case the team has difficulties?  These losses are on B.

38 weeks 5 days ago Your posts suggest

That you're ready to just believe what DB has said. I actually happen to know Prof. Haithcock personally and have family members in nthe band now. I could find out their side but then its just someone reporting their side of the story. All I'm saying to you is this is a complex situation that can't just be changed without serious planning. It sounds like there was a miscommnication somewhere and DB is misinformed or isn't clear on the specifics. It's unfortunate that he chose to speaks publicly about this instead of keeping it in house. You should be savvy enough to know that maybe there's more to this situation than DB spews to the papers.

38 weeks 5 days ago Well...

I do agree with your first two paragraphs, but you're pretty uniformed about what happens in band week if you think it can just be skipped or moved. About 350 students make arrangements to come back to a2 early, they have tryouts for the people to be in the group, they learn or relearn all the marching techniques, set the first performance block and learn the first show. So yes, you can't really just skip it. They are talented and dedicated, but (as a former member) they would not look or sound the way they do without band week.

1 year 20 weeks ago Eligibility for

Grant aid or federal student loans has nothing to do with the NCAA. IT's completely subject to government limitations based on cost of attendance, expected family contribution, and other scholarships the student receives. A student can't receive grant aid if their athletic scholarship covers the entire cost of attendance.

1 year 20 weeks ago No

State or federal grant aid has nothing whatsoer to do with athletic scholarships. A walk-on could very well qualify for grant aid depending on their economic background. Of course, people who are able to walk on and pay their own way usually have no money issues, and probably wouldn't qualify for grants in the first place, but it is possible.

1 year 20 weeks ago For public schools athletes....

A public school student who isn't on athletic scholarship is treated just like any other student. Their economic background may or may not be checked depending on the info they submit on their FASFA. Any grant aid they are eligible for they will receive as long as they apply on time. Those rules are set by the government for public institutions, and are constrained by the "cost of attendance" that each school sets. A basic fin aid equation is:

Expected family contribution + grant aid(if eligible) + student loans (if needed) = Cost of attendance (institution set)

For scholarship athletes:

Athletic Scholarship + grant aid(if eligible) + student loans (if needed) = Cost of attendance (institution set)

FYI, for all public schools, an athlete's cost of attendance is different than a non athlete.

AFA Private schools go, the rules for Pell or other government grants are the same. They do have more flexibility in how they use their funds for scholarships, etc .

1 year 22 weeks ago 2 very different points of view

Your point is that there's lots of money sitting out there that ends up in the pockets of coaches and admins, so why not give some to the students?  My point is there are 50k students at UM and an incredibly small minority should not be given even more benefits then they already receive just because our current market values certain sports as it does.  This point has been discussed ad naseum on the board before.  We are looking at this problem from completely different points of view.  You are considering them employees of a sort, and I am considering them as part of the student body.  We cannot provide this benefit to the vast majority of students, therefore no students should get the benefit.

I do agree that there is too much money going to the coaches and admins.  I don't have a good answer as to the best way to combat that issue, but my view of the football team as students of the university keeps me from saying, just pay them.

What we need to be considering is the athletes from extremely poor backgrounds who are really in need of more support than their normal athletic scholarships provide.  I do think there could be some solution to support those athletes more, but then financial aid officers would need to be involoved in the process and it gets complicated.

1 year 22 weeks ago Well...

If you don't like that the coaches and administrators are getting more money, why don't we put a salary cap on them instead of giving student athletes (who are already compensated) more money?  If you don't like where the money is going I'm sure there are other places it could go that would be beneficial.  IMHO, giving student athletes an additional benefit is not the way to deal with this situation.

1 year 22 weeks ago ^^^ This.

Thank you!  Let's all please remember that no one makes these kids do this.  They do get compensated for their time and effort, and in more than just a degree.  Contacts, the cache that comes with having played football at a major university, etc.  I had scholarships for my undergrad at UM and still came out with 40k in debt.  And I would have killed to eat at the training table, let alone have extra academic support!

1 year 26 weeks ago Sorry to Threadjack...

Sorry to threadjack, but I obv don't have enough points to post this and I think it's a big deal.

WTKA had a former fball letterman on this morning with Sam Webb.  Didn't catch who it was, but apparently DB is no longer setting aside tickets for former players.  They have to purchase season tickets if they want to come to games.  He even indicated that they were also expected to pay the seat license to even be able to buy tickets.  And if that's not enough for you, he insinuated that former players won't be allowed on the sidelines without sizeable donations going forward.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but if not, could someone start a thread about this?  Not all the former letterman have the finances to buy tickets or make donations to be on the sidelines.  They deserve better than this.

2 years 38 weeks ago Relax!

He agreed with your point, and then point out something that he believed was important. No reason to get huffy...

3 years 28 weeks ago Reality. Try it.

Read some of Misopogon's posts. Attrition, esp on defense has killed us. We do not have "some of the most talent in the country". We don't even stack up well against the rest of the B10. We'll get there, but it's going to take some time.

3 years 28 weeks ago Love the kittens!!!

Great info as always. Thanks for your insights. Do we have any idea what RR's retention rates were at WVU?

3 years 28 weeks ago Prepare for repitition

As previously discussed on this site, RR does have a track record of doing more with less at WVU. But when guys have to be coached up, it takes a couple of years to see the improvement. I'm not sure if someone has done this already, but do we know the average age/year of his starters at WVU during the Slaton/White years?

3 years 30 weeks ago Agreed

I do agree that you can't put the whole game on one injury. But given the improvement we had seen in previous weeks with the Molk-less OL you have to think we would at least have seen a more competent OL performance with another week of practice.

3 years 30 weeks ago Agree...but

I agree the refs missed the call, but the game didn't turn on the int.

3 years 30 weeks ago Molk Injury

Does anyone else think this game swung on the injury to Molk? The offensive line looked completely out of sorts, and I have to think that has something to do with having practiced all week with Molk in. Molk inury = preparation out the window = offense can't move = ugly loss. Thoughts?

3 years 30 weeks ago Amen

Could we please just not start this again?

3 years 34 weeks ago Robinson underthrown INT with 4 min left in 2q

I think this pic DR threw is a good representation of where he is right now. He's seeing things, just has to figure out how to use his arm to get the ball where it needs to be. I'm sure he was so used to beating guys with his legs in HS, he never had to rely on his arm too much...

God help opposing defensive coordinators when he figures this out!

3 years 34 weeks ago Well...

I will admit that when people are telling you that you don't play loud enough, are not about the team only yourself etc. it does tend to make one feel defensive. Before you make jack-ass comments like this, try and remember that these kids are students who devote a TON of time to be in the group, for no reason other than they want to be there. They return to campus early in the fall, work their asses off before classes begin and then continue to work. Not to mention the injuries they sustain from the high impact pregame. So please, before you come here saying the band members are only about themselves, go watch a rehearsal and then see what you think.

3 years 34 weeks ago Lockdown corners shut off whole parts of the field

One of the biggest contributions that Woodson gave to the 97 defense was the (mostly) complete shutting off of a whole side of the field to the passing game. I think you have to look at that facet of the game to get a feel for a true "lockdown corner". Hard to document though...

3 years 34 weeks ago Take your own advice

And read the posts from other people who know what they're talking about. It is all about where you are hearing the band from. If you sit behind the group, you won't hear them. I don't care how loud they play or what the instrumentation is. Doesn't matter! Sit across from them, and then see if you can hear. I do, and I can!

Do you know anyone in the band currently? It's pretty dangerous to assume that Boerma is telling his students to come here and flame. Also, he's NOT saying that MMB should become a artsy drum corp. Take a second and educate yourself on what Boerma did before coming to the MMB. Listen to what he wrote for drum corp. It's not "artsy".
And for the record, from one MMB alum to another, please don't pull out the "in my day we had to do entries uphill, barefoot blah blah blah." They work just as hard as we did, and are the same kids of people as when we did it.

Sorry, couldn't resist...

3 years 35 weeks ago Did you seriously say piccolo trumpets????

Sorry dude, but you're just completely wrong. There's no way that brass instruments could play those woodwind parts sitting down. let alone on the move. High school band is not the MMB.

And...piccolo trumpets? Seriously?

3 years 38 weeks ago This is same as it was under Carr

I am friendly with some of the former members of the team. During a family gathering, the subject of offseason workouts came up, and I specifically asked if there was a limit imposed by the NCAA and the player responded: "there are limits, but these workouts are voluntary. Of course, the coaches have a saying: if you don't come to the volunteer workouts, you volunteer to not play."

End of Story IMO.
