Date Title Body
FSU

We actually jumped FSU (because they dropped) -- they had 3 5* and dropped to 2 5* with the rerank. We gained a 5* by Kalis being reranked up.

Since Rivals truncates at 20, we have a legit shot at catching up to Texas if we land more 4* (and/or 5*) in the class.

Statistics

In order to be statistically valid you would have to change all the teams to 1 (from hockey, curling, bobsled, relays (multiple sports), etc...) not just hockey.

e.g. USA = 216 Athletes
Bobsled 4 man x3 = -9
Bobsled 2 woman x3 = -3
Curling 5 man = -4
Curling 5 woman = -4
Figure Skating Pairs x2 = -2
Ice Dancing Pairs x3 = -3
Mens Hockey (23) = -22
Womens Hockey (21) = -20
Luge doubles x2 = -2
Total USA teams/athletes = 147

(all other teams relays were either a combo of individual participants in other sports or a combo of IP's plus one additional and therefore don't further subtract from the total)

Therefore USA - 37/147 = 25.2%

Further -- some countries sent athletes to complete in only one event. Others (USA included) sent athletes to compete in multiple events. To be truly accurate for wins/opportunity you would have to calculate medals/event participated in not just medals/athlete. This is mitigated partially by the team sports but once you make each team=1 the effect will be more pronounced.

In general though comparing teams who (after adjustment) sent 10-20 players/teams with teams who sent 100+ players is simply not going to result in a demonstratively statistically valid comparison.

Yes

Back in college my buddies and I spent tons of time doing this instead of programming or doing homework. It was definitely more fun at the time (heh).

Scheduling

If we want to have 7-8 home games every year (read: make a profit/pay off the debt on the construction) then we cannot schedule more home/home series in addition to ND. Even the mid-major conference teams are starting to ask for home/home instead of just a 1-game agreement in many cases today.

In addition to the above any team we decide to schedule would have to happen to have the same mid-season open date as our big ten by-week happens to land on in order to make it work (and not once but 2x in the home/home case) as we typically easily fill the "pre-season" games up with three teams before the B10 season starts anyway.

Wild Card U

If you look up the "Wild Card U" in Howells ratings you will find it has a record of 5-80 this year. Wild Card U simply represents non 1-A competition this year to date. So in other words 85 games have been played between 1-A and lower subdivisions this year. It is no longer a reasonable position to establish some sense of "high ground" in scheduling when there isn't such a thing anymore. There are several examples of schools who schedule two non 1-A teams in just the last decade (this year = Mass + Tenn Tech). Miami has played FAMU for years and never gets raked over the coals like we do for 1 or 2 such games.

Also

The D1A vs D1A (so ignoring D1AA opponents) is currently 25.5 per team per game. So the B10 number above falls into the expected statistical range of the overall average.

Updated for 9/27

The pages have been updated for 9/27 with the exception of the Polls (later today) and the SoS (probably 9/29 Tuesday).

Tate

If he has it in a sling it may just be bruised or w/e. Hopefully its a minor ding up and will be playable next weekend.

Concession

I think RR just gave up on returns this year assuming that no turnover = good. As frustrating as it is to watch the game knowing there will be essentially no excitement in the punt return game (my favorite part of the game during Breastons tenure) I do see the value of focusing on eliminating the turnovers.

This all being said I don't understand why Stonum cannot field the punts as well as the KOs -- mabye too valuable or w/e.

Updated for 9/20

Updated all of the current weekly content for games through 9/19 -- with the exception of the average SoS which depends on another site that has yet to update (look for SoS updates tomorrow or Tuesday).

Order and Alternate Universes

Any time a call would have been different (therefore forcing you to enter an alternate universe) the decisions made by both teams would have been altered from that point forward as well. Trying to point out a single call regardless of its time (1st play or 4th quarter) does not prove the outcome would have been different in the end.

Refs and Whining

I have always said that if you have to complain about the refs -- you let the other team get too close for you to deserve to win the game in the first place. People or individual fans can gripe all they want about the officiating -- but simply stated you make more of a case that you didn't deserve to win by whining about the refs. When a coach or player gripes about the refs it is a strong indication that they should have coached better or played harder.
