Their dairy, agriculture and

Their dairy, agriculture and vet students are generally modest, small-town, smart kids. It's most of the rest that give them such a bad rep.

From what I've seen, a female

From what I've seen, a female grad from Kettering or UM-CoE is an automatic $100K starting salary.

Fairly confident Michigan

Fairly confident Michigan seems lower than it should because so many students go on to graduate school. For a pre-health track, 10 years from freshman year is first or second year of medical residency making $50K ... just a couple of years later they're making $175K+.

Kettering has a really high

Kettering has a really high dropout rate (like 40%), so all of that deadweight is obviously not being factored in.

Do you guys think GMC Yukon Denalis are tacky? In black. I'm on the fence.

200 per year? I envy your reading speed. Any tips to get a 15 y.o. kid into books? I worry about his future if he doesn't shake this "I hate reading" phase. His grades are solid, but they're probably inflated.

I stopped playing because the

I stopped playing fantasy because the knob that always won was an insufferable grind who worked from home, sunk hours each day into doing research, and hoarded every free agent with a pulse. And at the end of the day, it just felt like 98% luck. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks bud. Do

Thanks bud. Do aficionados only drink caps and macchiatos or straight shots? I can't see you picking up too many subtleties or the espresso quality in like a latte.

Shake Shack is the real deal.

Shake Shack is the real deal. I believe McDonald's, Subway, Burger King reigns are over and the quality all-natural joints have serious staying power.

If I was the OP I'd short Panera Bread (PNRA). That place has become high school cafeteria food for $12 a pop. Restaurants are dingy and dirty, employees appear to all hate life, new food releases are disgusting.

Is your match list all California?

That's a great grantland

That's a great grantland article. Love the part about people who "upgrade" when they attend graduate school. That's always bugged me.

Was son going to UConn due to tuition costs (in-state, vs out of state for UM)?

Once the baristas start recognizing my name and/or order I find a new spot.

I'm sort of a coffee snob and

I'm sort of a coffee snob and the McDonald's $1 cup (black) is actually not bad at all. Especially for a buck.

I hope this doesn't come

I hope this doesn't come across poorly, but was all the practice worth it? Or is it like a hobby at this point? That's why I haven't bought anything, and don't even try to make my own coffee at home -- I just figure the pros at good shops will always be better than me, you know.

I can tell you know your

I can tell you know your stuff. I have been unable to find the time or interest in making my own coffee/espresso at home. Further, I figure the big shops (Mighty Good, Intellgentsia, Bow Truss, Astro, Madcap, etc.) have the top-end equipment, the best product, and their pro baristas have skills I'd never cultivate. Am I correct?

That food sounds really,

That food sounds really, really phenomenal.

Ann Arbor: Mighty Good ...

Chicago (River North): Bow Truss ... an interesting pour over (black) or cappuccino

B'ham has a lot of money, but is full of car-rich wannabes drowning in debt to keep up appearances. High % of renters too.

40 miles in any direction of

40 miles in any direction of Lansing is just sad. So it's easy for Okemos to feel fancy when surrounded by such decay, low-culture and poverty. Okemos is not in the league of any of the prime Metro Detroit burbs, or Ann Arbor, or East GR. I don't think it's in the same league as Brighton, either. They're in their own delusional bubble.

Impressive. I appreciate you

Impressive. I appreciate your grasp of the state's landscape. Solid Macatawa drop.

Clarkston, really? I think

Clarkston, really? I think it's the most laid back burb. Great town. High school is getting so huge though, wonder if that will become an issue in the near future. Could also use a high end grocer, so moms don't have to keep driving to Rochester's Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

The prime east and west coast

The prime east and west coast privates send 10-15 students to Michigan each year, including Andover and Exeter. Ross pre-admit and College of Engineering are legit draws on this level. Plus, football Saturdays.

Ann Arbor kids can take all

Ann Arbor kids can take all sorts of programs at different high schools. Even kids who miss the Community lottery can still take classes there. In theory, a smart kid could attend classes at Skyline, Community and UofM in a single day.

Is this a joke? EGR is being

Is this a joke? EGR is being taken over by hipsters? Isn't the avg house there still $260K+? I always thought it was the most stable and conservative nabe on the west side of the state.

When people say Forest Hills,

When people say Forest Hills, does that include Ada and Cascade or are those seperate?

Detroit and Grosse Pointe.

Detroit and Grosse Pointe. And in Chicago you have the Hyde Park neighborhood (UChicago, hospitals, Obamas) framed by murder hotspot neighborhoods that rival ISIS controlled areas of the middle east.

I'll never visit gawker,

I'll never visit gawker, deadspin, etc. after what they did to the Conde Nast CFO. Just a cesspool of unstable "writers" who thrive off ruining lives. Really, really sick stuff.

Rochester Hills or Oakland

Rochester Hills or Oakland Twp? NDP seems to be a popular choice with that area.

How many other students from

How many other students from your high school made it to UofM, or a UofM caliber college? I'd assume not many, unless "middle of nowhere" means Midland Dow, making you an outlier. It's really challenging to rise above the fray, especially these days. Wealthy parents are throwing so much time and money into grooming their kids, leaving average middle and working class kids in the dust, as they clean up in college admissions and the prime careers. Google "achievement gap" for thousands of well-researched stories.

Great contribution. That

Great contribution. That said, also get what he's saying about the high-achieving grinds, many of which are a little anti-social/awkward, and often Asian. Overall, I do think it is "cooler" to be sharp, driven, and hyper-involved at privates. Knowing how to write clean code, starting a fundraiser and raising $50K, just being an all-around superkid is how to gain status at a tony private (or International Academy, to be fair). But at the average public, you can just be the QB or the party animal class clown and control the school.

Thanks for the sharp Thanks for the sharp insights, Freud. Over 20 alums of these schools have posted, so the thread is a success. You and other cynics will see what you want to see. I encourage you to examine your motives.
I think it's because when you I think it's because when you read the A2 crime blotters, majority of the suspects have Ypsilanti addresses. And most of the troublemakers when I was in college were uninvited EMU students trying to interlope at our parties.
Sorry man, DC is booming with Sorry man, DC is booming with over-educated millennials. Only city that has changed so dramatically in the last decade would be SF/ Palo Alto.
Would love to take this list

Would love to take this list seriously but all credibility went out the window when I saw Lansing-East Lansing at #8. Rivalry bias aside, that is a horrible wasteland of an area. Ghetto and trashy. Awful schools. Low culture. A decaying UAW enclave that happens to have a large (poorly managed) university.

Ann Arbor is the most premier town in Michigan, but I don't think it's nearly as erudite as SF, DC, Boston or Seattle.

These privates are mega

These privates are mega feeders to the University, sending a higher % of their grads to UM than any other schools in the nation. So, I don't think it's a bad place to ask. And among the sarcasm, I count at least 20 alums of these fine preps, which is impressive (where else can you get that depth on this sort of topic?). Snark is fine. A thread can be both informative and humorous.

Define major. They seem to

Define major. They seem to dominate the patrician sports. I think they won state titles in hockey, M and W tennis, golf, crew, field hockey last year alone.

Andover or Exeter? Does it

Andover or Exeter? Does it seem like the NYC privates have surged in status over the last 10-15 years or so?

I'd agree they're in a league

I'd agree they're in a league of their own, but their admissions standards rival Ivy Leagues and not too many families are eager to send a 14 or 15 y.o. away. SE Mich. privates are a more realistic proposition.

You did summers at a couple preps, right? You think life would have turned out differently had you gone to one of them over Community? Did you try to apply to one after summering? Ever talk to any of the kids you met after the summer sessions?

Can you please elab. Thank you.

NDP, UofD-Jesuit, Brother

NDP, UofD-Jesuit, Brother Rice/Marian, CC/Mercy are around $13K.

Ligg, Greenhills, DCDS, Cranbrook, Roeper are $25K-30K. Cranbrook is the most, I think, at $31K. But I don't think families value shop one over the other to save a few grand a year.

It seems clear Cranbrook has

It seems clear Cranbrook has the most name recognition and the most beautiful campus, but it doesn't seem like every family applies or even considers sending their child(ren) there. Are there things many prospective families don't like about CK? There are plenty of wealthy NDP and DCDS families who can easily afford the extra CK tuition, but don't bother.

Truth. The ACT writing

Truth. The ACT writing section prep books explain that as long as you use decent grammar, force in a couple large words, and make up some famous quote, you'll get a perfect score on your writing section. The takeaway, imo, is that so few 11th graders know elementary grammar that it quickly teases out that you're a 95+ percentile student. Nuts.
