Right.  Tons of late-game heroics, all of which has been awesome.  But when was our last TOUCHDOWN MANNINGHAM-pulling-the-game-out-just-as-the-clock-hits-zero moment?

10 weeks 4 days ago That hurt.  Can anyone

That hurt.  Can anyone remember the last game that we WON or tied a game on a buzzer-beater?  There and Evan effing Turner, Backboard Ahmadenijad, and Brust this year.  We've had some late heroics, but I can't remember the last true buzzer-beater.  Anyone?

I just want to know what the hell is wrong with Jordan Kovacs in this photograph. Fingers crossed that he ceases to be petrified and manniquin-esque by 1/1/13. Also: affirmatively like the helmetzz and could take/leave the rest.

I should probably change my username to "naivelyoptimistic", but I can't shake the notion that this public apology is the first step in a multi-step process that ends with JT getting reinstated for the bowl game.

24 weeks 5 days ago Is my memory and reading

Is my memory and reading comprehenshon so bad that I didn't notice a straight "Did you support the decision to add Rutgers and Maryland" question as opposed to the generic "futher thoughts" comment box?  I wonder why on earth they wouldn't just ask the question.  I'm sure it's because everyone loves it *so* much!

27 weeks 3 days ago What he wanted to say but

What he wanted to say but couldn't without getting fined/reprimanded: "I was kind of upset at this point by the fact that we'd been called for a lot more penalties and been penalized for a lot more yards than Michigan.  This was my sarcastic reaction to this state of affairs."

Don't agree with his assessment or his reaction, but that's what's probably going on here.

28 weeks 5 days ago I was fairly blown away by

I was fairly blown away by his athleticism.  It pains me to say it, but the player he most reminded me of was, um, Terrelle Pryor.  So in the best tradition of Fred Jackson, I'll say "He's like Terrelle Pryor, but a good person."

29 weeks 3 days ago The google reveals that Trey

The google reveals that Trey is our first pre-season All American in 18 years (Jalen Rose, 1994).

34 weeks 3 days ago So there's a section of this

So there's a section of this post that's headed "Come on Denard."  I know that there's a segment of the readership here that views Brian as an unmitigated Denard apologist (he's not), but read the whole post before you attack the guy (fergodsakes).

36 weeks 4 days ago Cut Block Question

Given the quality of the staff and the athleticism of the guys, I was surprised by how befuddled they seemed to be by the cut blocks.  Which leads to my question: how the hell do you avoid being cut, whether in space or on the interior?

43 weeks 3 days ago I am still not entirely sure

I am still not entirely sure that this isn't a BHGP pro combat parody.  Gloves especially.

50 weeks 3 days ago So I guess off-season does

So I guess off-season does have its benefits.  This post won the internet today.  I hope everyone realizes this.  And basks in the insane good fortune that we have Brian monitoring preposterous M-themed tchochkes (the previews, game columns, UFR's, and thought pieces are cool, too).

1 year 6 weeks ago This decision puts Trey Burke

This decision puts Trey Burke very much in the running for "my favorite Michigan basketball player of all time" status (which I know is very important to him /s).

1 year 6 weeks ago Bah! I have no time for you

Bah! I have no time for you "logic" and "reasoned analysis". /s (you make a good point . . .)

It may be my persecution complex talking, but is there any doubt that McGary keeps that fifth star if he signs with Duke?

1 year 7 weeks ago This would suck in an epic

This would suck in an epic way.  I don't want to detract from how much this would suck.  But we should take some solace in what LaVall Jordan was able to accompish with Morris, Burke, and Douglass.  Jordan develops talent.  No -- actually he develops the LIVING HELL out of talent.  And I suspect that he'll continue to do so whether we sign this Spike person or the kid from Italy.

After the Che Foster fumble, a guy standing in front of me in the student section turned around and hollared to all within earshot "I'M NOT WORRIED!"  Other than the horrible ending, and watching Todd Collins sprint -- I mean he was booking (for Todd Collins) -- into the tunnel after said horrible ending, this is my most vivid memory of that particular game.

1 year 16 weeks ago TomVH in particular is

TomVH in particular is catching a ton of crap over at his place because, well, people are disappointed that the 18 year-old kids on whom he reports have made decisions that said people don't like.  I for one totally blame this top-ten class on Tom.  Bastard.

Woodson.  Others from the past 15-20 years who made the ticker go pitter-patter: Wheatley, Toomer, Biakabatuka, Harris, Hart, Manningham, Graham, Martin, & Denard.

1 year 20 weeks ago On the luck point, does

On the luck point, does anyone track it for football the way Pomeroy tracks it for basketball?    My instinct is that we were fairly unlucky in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and preposterously lucky this season.  But I'd love to see actual stats on this.

1 year 20 weeks ago I felt compelled to seek out

I felt compelled to seek out footage of the end of the 2005 Alamo Bowl.  God bless the internets.  Here it is: LINK.  The number of yahoos milling about on the field is quite remarkable.

1 year 22 weeks ago My slightly counter-intuitive

My slightly counter-intuitive take is that this might not be the worst thing in the world for Meyer.  The scholarship reductions aren't crippling.  The postseason ban is actually a benefit.  It gives him a free year to install new schemes without much in the way of consequence. Now he can go 6-6 or even 5-7 next year and only the nitwits will be calling for his head.

1 year 23 weeks ago All I can say about the

All I can say about the sports press corps here in Boston is that Drew Sharp and Michael Rosenberg would probably do really well here.  It's like Mecca for haters.

1 year 23 weeks ago Mad props to you for the

Mad props to you for the first "GET OFF MY LAWN" reference in this thread.  I will now get off your lawn.

[EDIT: You beat the Eastwood guy below by just eleven minutes, so good job there.  He was probably just looking for that epic .gif, tho.]

1 year 24 weeks ago I doubt Mike Brown's Lakers

I doubt Mike Brown's Lakers are going to run the triangle, so they do suddently need a pure PG.  Right now they have Derek Fisher, who is as old as time and a shell of his former self after protracted CBA negotiations, and Steve Blake, who remains Steve Blake.  If Darius has continued to develop and Mike Brown is willing to play a rookie, Darius could find himself playing meaningful minutes.

1 year 24 weeks ago Blow it up

I'd scrap the current fetid mess and start over with:

*Eight 15-team geographic divisions.  The big challenge here is parity, but it can be done.

*Ten game regular season, with two non-division games (and no FCS games; though they could be played in exhibitions before the start of the regular season).

*Take the eight division winners and put them in a three round playoff, with the first two rounds located at higher seeded schools and the final round at a rotating neutral site.  Seeding could be based on straight record and score differential (a la the Premiership).

*Those that don't make the "tournament" can still qualify for whatever bowl games are profitable enough to remain extant.

This will never happen.  I understand that.

1 year 25 weeks ago And if the local convention

And if the local convention authority and/or the stadium posted the ad and is making the payments, that would technically be correct, yes?  Misleading, but correct.

1 year 25 weeks ago If it would make the

If it would make the conference tougher that's not a bad thing.  To be the best, beat the best and all that.  But I'm not so sure it makes the conference that much tougher.  6-6, even in the ess eee see, is 6-6.

1 year 25 weeks ago This sucks in all manner of

This sucks in all manner of ways, but selfishly I can say I'll miss watching him jump out of the gym this year.  I can't think of anyone in the conference who has anything approaching his hops.  Thank goodness that medicine has advanced to the point where kids can come back from this sort of thing without losing a whole lot.  If Mbakwe adds a jump shot while he's working his way into shape, he'll play meaningful minutes at the next level.

1 year 25 weeks ago History

That Saban has done it prompts a lot of us to forget how hard it is for college coaches to walk away from programs they built and then reenter the coaching ranks a year or three later.  Everyone talks about Meyer having that oil painting of Woody in his house.  He might want to put another one of Saban up next to it.  Because the alternative scenario is Steve Spurrier (who's having an admittedly good year, but after a bunch of 8-4 mediocrity).  Or Lou Holtz.  And look at the NFL: Parcells isn't sporting a bunch of Super Bowl rings from his stint with the Cowboys, nor Holmgren with the Seahawks, or Gibbs with the 'Skins the 2d time around.  I'm sure there are a zillion other examples.  We all care about this game so much -- too much? -- and that prompts us to look for ready-made super saviors.  But the legends, the guys with statues and stadiums named after them, they tend to be the guys who start with nothing, or near nothing, and put something special together brick by brick.  Your move, Coach Meyer.

1 year 25 weeks ago Sticking Point

There are some twitter rumblings suggesting the final sticking point might be Meyer's supposed request that Ohio relax its academic/admission standards [insert snarky comment about not being aware of any such standards here].  I haven't seen this discussed elsewhere in the thread.  I'd like to say that this would be yet another PR disaster, but that's wishful thinking.  Urban Meyer is, after all, Urban Meyer.

1 year 25 weeks ago Conspiracy or not, this is

Conspiracy or not, this is the only explanation (other than downright incompetence) I've seen that makes any sense.  I don't know that there was enough evidence to confirm the call on the field, but there sure wasn't enough to reverse there.

1 year 26 weeks ago He'll do well

He'll do well for three reasons. (1) Chip Kelly et al. are proof that his offense can be wildly successful in conference. (2) He's a gifted recruiter and he'll have no trouble convincing kids to come to Tucson. (3) I may be going out on a limb here, but I doubt that he'll be bringing gerg with him.

1 year 29 weeks ago Oh well

Very cool of us to continue shoring up the defensive side of the ball at Pitt, tho.

1 year 29 weeks ago Noticed the same thing

There was a bit more substance to it than I'm used to seeing.  Hoke said a few things and Hope seemed slightly defensive.

1 year 31 weeks ago Wind

I'm sure it's been noted elsewhere, but I wonder whether the wind affected the game plan yesterday w/r/t dealing with their D-line.  I could see Borges et al. having a bunch of bubble screens planned but then scrapping or limiting them at the last minute after getting blown half to hell during warmups.  Last minute adjustments could also explain why we flirted with delay penalties for a lot of the day.

1 year 34 weeks ago 1996 vs undefeated OSU at the 'shoe

I doubt that there was a human being outside of the M locker room who thought we'd win that game.  Still remember Tai Streets running a pretty simple route and then *poof* he was GONE.

1 year 36 weeks ago Egg?  Meet face.

Egg?  Meet face.

1 year 46 weeks ago Quite True

Another good example is 1997.  The Penn State game was two weeks before OSU and it rained quite a bit IIRC.  I definitely remember driving to State College in a torrential rainstorm the night before.

1 year 46 weeks ago Karma

Two weeks later those of us who stuck this game out got to witness one of the more satisfying victories, and dominant individual performances, I've ever witnessed first-hand.  I still have a picture of me and a couple of friends with the scoreboard in the background reading Michigan 31, Ohio State 23.

1 year 50 weeks ago Data Points

Here are the headwear selections of the coaches of the last 10 national champions: Chizik (no hat), Saban (no hat), Meyer (no hat), Miles (HAT!), Meyer (no hat), Brown (no hat), Carroll (no hat), Saban (no hat), Tressel (no hat), Coker (hat).  I vote for no hat.
