That hurt.  Can anyone remember the last game that we WON or tied a game on a buzzer-beater?  There and Evan effing Turner, Backboard Ahmadenijad, and Brust this year.  We've had some late heroics, but I can't remember the last true buzzer-beater.  Anyone?

I just want to know what the hell is wrong with Jordan Kovacs in this photograph. Fingers crossed that he ceases to be petrified and manniquin-esque by 1/1/13. Also: affirmatively like the helmetzz and could take/leave the rest.

Is my memory and reading comprehenshon so bad that I didn't notice a straight "Did you support the decision to add Rutgers and Maryland" question as opposed to the generic "futher thoughts" comment box?  I wonder why on earth they wouldn't just ask the question.  I'm sure it's because everyone loves it *so* much! 

I was fairly blown away by his athleticism.  It pains me to say it, but the player he most reminded me of was, um, Terrelle Pryor.  So in the best tradition of Fred Jackson, I'll say "He's like Terrelle Pryor, but a good person."

So there's a section of this post that's headed "Come on Denard."  I know that there's a segment of the readership here that views Brian as an unmitigated Denard apologist (he's not), but read the whole post before you attack the guy (fergodsakes).

I am still not entirely sure that this isn't a BHGP pro combat parody.  Gloves especially.

This decision puts Trey Burke very much in the running for "my favorite Michigan basketball player of all time" status (which I know is very important to him /s).  

It may be my persecution complex talking, but is there any doubt that McGary keeps that fifth star if he signs with Duke?

TomVH in particular is catching a ton of crap over at his place because, well, people are disappointed that the 18 year-old kids on whom he reports have made decisions that said people don't like.  I for one totally blame this top-ten class on Tom.  Bastard.   

On the luck point, does anyone track it for football the way Pomeroy tracks it for basketball?    My instinct is that we were fairly unlucky in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and preposterously lucky this season.  But I'd love to see actual stats on this.

My slightly counter-intuitive take is that this might not be the worst thing in the world for Meyer.  The scholarship reductions aren't crippling.  The postseason ban is actually a benefit.  It gives him a free year to install new schemes without much in the way of consequence. Now he can go 6-6 or even 5-7 next year and only the nitwits will be calling for his head.

I'd scrap the current fetid mess and start over with:

*Eight 15-team geographic divisions.  The big challenge here is parity, but it can be done.

*Ten game regular season, with two non-division games (and no FCS games; though they could be played in exhibitions before the start of the regular season).

*Take the eight division winners and put them in a three round playoff, with the first two rounds located at higher seeded schools and the final round at a rotating neutral site.  Seeding could be based on straight record and score differential (a la the Premiership).

*Those that don't make the "tournament" can still qualify for whatever bowl games are profitable enough to remain extant.

This will never happen.  I understand that.

If it would make the conference tougher that's not a bad thing.  To be the best, beat the best and all that.  But I'm not so sure it makes the conference that much tougher.  6-6, even in the ess eee see, is 6-6.

That Saban has done it prompts a lot of us to forget how hard it is for college coaches to walk away from programs they built and then reenter the coaching ranks a year or three later.  Everyone talks about Meyer having that oil painting of Woody in his house.  He might want to put another one of Saban up next to it.  Because the alternative scenario is Steve Spurrier (who's having an admittedly good year, but after a bunch of 8-4 mediocrity).  Or Lou Holtz.  And look at the NFL: Parcells isn't sporting a bunch of Super Bowl rings from his stint with the Cowboys, nor Holmgren with the Seahawks, or Gibbs with the 'Skins the 2d time around.  I'm sure there are a zillion other examples.  We all care about this game so much -- too much? -- and that prompts us to look for ready-made super saviors.  But the legends, the guys with statues and stadiums named after them, they tend to be the guys who start with nothing, or near nothing, and put something special together brick by brick.  Your move, Coach Meyer.         

Conspiracy or not, this is the only explanation (other than downright incompetence) I've seen that makes any sense.  I don't know that there was enough evidence to confirm the call on the field, but there sure wasn't enough to reverse there.

Very cool of us to continue shoring up the defensive side of the ball at Pitt, tho.

I'm sure it's been noted elsewhere, but I wonder whether the wind affected the game plan yesterday w/r/t dealing with their D-line.  I could see Borges et al. having a bunch of bubble screens planned but then scrapping or limiting them at the last minute after getting blown half to hell during warmups.  Last minute adjustments could also explain why we flirted with delay penalties for a lot of the day.

Two weeks later those of us who stuck this game out got to witness one of the more satisfying victories, and dominant individual performances, I've ever witnessed first-hand.  I still have a picture of me and a couple of friends with the scoreboard in the background reading Michigan 31, Ohio State 23.
