again. Hoping to see Suarez bag one here, but respect to Juve for settling in; they're still in it.

I know you didn't mean it this way, and that most people are just quoting old Bigs Bunny cartoons, but using "maroon" as a pejorative (like Bugs Bunny did) is actually a racist term.
Again, not accusing, just always bothers me when peope use this term without knowing to what it refers...

I am very bummed that Gerrard is going to LA. Like most longtime Liverpool supporters, I think the club was cheap and disrespectful not offer him a phasing out in a Giggs-type role and a new contract, but OTOH, he said he would not accept being a squad player, so, it's a shame. He has slowed down though and is missing the attcking dynamism of his early years... That said, when he played this week in a box-to-box position (and not as a deep holding MF) he played great-- grabbed 2 goals (albeit one on a free kick), but against Wimbledon, so, it's not the standard required. He's given his life to club, it is dispappointing to see him not given a contract to see him play at LFC to the end. But time goes by, men get old, and they move out of the game. It was inevitable, but a shame to see it play out this way.
I am also bummed he chose LA and not a reunion wth Ged Houllier at NY Red Bull as I live in NYC and would have been an instant season ticket buyer, as would thousands of other LFC fans in the area. Now his games will be on at 10:00 PM EST and later and, even with an MLS package subscription, I'll miss many of them, as will a ton of fans.

Just lost my fantasy league by .18.
My QB, Matt Stafford, lost 3 yards, .3 points, taking a knee to end the game against Chicago.

Terrible news. I wonder if he suffered head injuries playing football? We showed a film at work that detailed the possible links between ALS and brain injuries suffered playing football. Kevin Turner, a fullback who played at Alabama and in the NFL, was diagnosed with the disease, as was former Raiders fullback Steve Smith. Here is a trailer for the film:
Chris Nowinski, former WWE wrestler and Harvard football grad, is very involed in this reasearch through his Sports Legacy Institute, which tracks the long term effects of concussions on the lives of former players. More here:
Anyway, just curious to know if Mr. Shaw draws any parallels himself...

Liverpool is Michigan.
Man United has won more titles since 1990 than any other team... they are OSU.
Liverpool is the winningest team in English Football history... they are Michigan.
Benitez (LFC) and Carr (M) regimes end almost at the same time-ish.
Liverpool sign manager Roy Hodgson under dubious Director of Football decision
Michigan sign Rich Rod under dubious AD decision
Liverpool put in the worst performances in ages, M has three terrible seasons
Liverpool bring in Dalglish, a "Liverpool Man"
Michigan bring in Hoke, a "Michigan Man"
Liverpool does ok, struggles again, brings in Brendan Rogers.
Michigan sticks with Hoke.
On any given weekend, Liverpool and M seemed to be 100% synched up; one would win, the other would win. One would lose, the other would lose.
Trust me, I have endured both, side by side, for decades. The parallels are scary. #GoBlue #YNWA

That's what I did. I watched the 1994 World Cup in the USA, heading into in my final semester at Michigan. Fraser's Pub in Ann Arbor was capitalizing on the post-World Cup interest by showing soccer PPV games on weekends; you'd pay $20 in the AM and get to watch soccer all afternoon. I went for the first time in August to watch Liverpool v Arsenal and watched Robbie Fowler do this:
Loved the player, and fell in love with the club. Heading into my 20th year supporting LFC. Love Liverpool as much as my Wolverines.

Michael Bradley CANNOT give the ball away in the center of the pitch to a forward in the 94th minute. That cannot happen. Hoof it into touch. That can't happen.
You bring on a THIRD CB in Omar Gonzalez and you get beat on a diving far post header? Take a look at that ball. Geoff Cameron is eyeing Eder and has no idea Varela is coming in behind him. No idea. Not running full out to clear the ball, he takes a half ass swing at it as Varela bursts past him to score. Couple that with his absolute howler that set up Nani for their first, and he has to raise his hand for the two goals, with an assist from Bradley on the second.
So many chances to put this away, none taken.
That goal will haunt me for a long time.
I hope this doesn't cost us qualification as even a pre-arranged draw would be a feat for this team. They are gutsy and they play way over their heads, but they give away so many huge, soft goals for no reason. Kills me.

The defense, especially Besler/Chandler/Gonzalez , will be what sends this team home from Brazil (aside from the killer opponents in our Group). Johnson and cameron are good, but Turkey were relentless in attacking the right wing (our LB) and no one was stepping out to close down the ball, stop crosses, mark deep balls over the top, etc. It was a road map for a better team to rip us apart, and the penalty was a direct result of our LB/CB dilemma.
Mostly, closing the ball down was atrocious. Mix Diskerud did a good job when he came on, as did Yedlin, but that was late.
I think Altidore did well holding up the ball and dominating Turkey physically- that is a real skill, but I think Dempsey is a tough partner for Altdore, who is direct and strng, while Dempsey is tricks and flicks, grifting at the far post, doesn't hustle into dangerous positions, etc. He is a languid player for a forward; if Altidore was knocking the ball down for a speed merchant who could finish, it would be something else.
Last, I don't think this was Bradley's best performance, but his assist was sublime and his engine is something else. Jones was a bit of a mess, Beckerman would be my choice to just sit in front of the back four and help the defense, who need it.
Anyway. A fun day out with the family... a lucky win, but I'll take that.

I think Johnson is a different type of receiver, not an open space player, but a player who gets open and makes huge plays.

|1 year 35 weeks ago||Recruiting||
To change Head Coaches with the recruiting classes we are putting together would be a huge setback and completely insane. I think Hoke needs time to let his classes come together, but CLEARLY these players need coaching up. Recruiting doesn't mean anything if the players are not coached well and molded into great teams. I think staff changes are needed to get the players coached up- Sparty and OSU take good players and coach them via their scheme and approach to positional disicpline into very good/ great teams with very good players.
Most of all, we have no swagger or killer instinct on this team, or anywhere in the organization. It's a family atmosphere that draws solid young men, but there is zero swagger. This team could use a heavy dose of toughness and fire. I hate seeing Taylor Lewan and Frank Clark making bone headed/ irresponsible personal fouls, but if that passion was molded into every player and was harnessed into a disciplined aggression, we'd be on to something; I just don't see the program adopting that mindset. It's a shame because I think the culture of the program could really use a disciplined, agressive mentality at this point; it starts at the top and the staff don't seem to be killers. At all. You don't need to be a person you are not or a huge jerk; you need to instill confidence in your players by constantly playing to their strengths and putting them in positions to succeed. You challenge them, you give them the skills they need and you have a comprehensive approach to getting it done. I think this is fixable... but do the staff have the mindset to do it? Time will tell... and we'll all continue to endure Michigan fandom untill we find out.

Just back to NYC... My second visit to Rentschler (saw Liverpool there a few years back)...
I though our fans were poor, mostly because we played poorly but also because we had no band-- I know, I know-- but it is hard to get a disparate group of people in synch on the Victors and Let's Go Blue without some kind of musical framework. Saw a couple of our fans get booted for exchanging beers dumped on people's heads-- really lame.
As one of the only stadia that serves beer for college games, I was expecting worse, but it was ok. My five year old's first game and he will forever associate WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE with 3rd down for Michigan... wish the DJs would have let the band play more.
The game: oof.
Worth it: Always! and my son is 1-0...

I would leave my boy home, too, but he would be devastated. If w have to leave early, assuming this is not Akron II, I guess I'll live with it. It is for us to have the time together, so I feel like I have to. Hoping for a long nap on the ride up...

Bitterly disappointed about the 8:00 PM kick. Bringing my 5 year old to his first game and expect he will be melting by the end, then the 3 hours back to NYC, etc. I appreciate and have been looking forward to this since the home and home was announced, because it makes it closer for NYC area alumni like me, but it reeeeaaaalllly sucks.
