After what happened a few years ago, the Michigan AD doesn't schedule Appalachian State because it's the best program available that day. That's an active decision to schedule them. I'm sure there are many schools of similar profile that we could have scheduled.
The logic, I think, is that the game has a hook -- a way to sell a few more tickets. Finding nonconference games with a hook isn't necessarily a bad thing... e.g., I like the idea of service academy games, which have more appeal than, say, Bowling Green. I just really dislike this particular hook (Appalachian State). Complete tone deafness from our AD on that one.
|18 hours 17 min ago||I'm so sick of the "Hoke||
I'm so sick of the "Hoke needs to be on the hot seat" stuff. He's in the middle of a massive rebuilding project. He's had one excellent season, one so-so season, and one shitty season. He's been an excellent representative of the university, he's recruiting really good players and kids, and he seems as clean as big-time college football coaches get. If one shitty season gets our coach on the hot seat - even when he's doing everything else right - we're in for a long era of wandering around looking for the perfect coach who will probably never come.
I also don't understand the group of people that says (1) we should have been patient with Rodriguez and therefore (2) we should not be patient with Hoke. That's such a frustrating, petty position.

I thought Brandon's most insightful point was followed by his most frustrating response. He said that the biggest competition for college football and basketball is flat-screen television sets, which I think is exactly right. His response to that is basically this (which comes a little later):
"Whoever is in this job, you have to stay current with the world changing around us, the world of entertainment. The easiest thing we could do is come up with a cookie-cutter approach for a football game."
To me, copying the gimmicks that you see from the rest of the sports and entertainment world is the cookie-cutter approach. I completely understand the need to differentiate and offer an experience superior to the awesome resolution, replays, TV angles, and climate control of living room television-watching. But in my mind what differentiate(d/s) Michigan football is the resistance to all of the stuff that everyone else does. Michigan Stadium can offer a unique, special sports experience rooted in history and dripping with charm. I think that plus winning is the formula. I'm fine with some experimentation and modernity, but what defines the Michigan Stadium experience should be its uniqueness and tradition.

I understand the sentiment, but I'm not sure we know how much of an awareness drop-off there is from Peppers to the other guys on our roster who could play the position. It's not like we have a bunch of less athletic but super-dependable seniors there. They're young. I think the coaches just have to test Peppers' (and the other guys') instincts in camp and see what looks like the best move. If his football IQ is anywhere near as elite as his athleticism, he might be as dependable as any of our other options.

I just looked directly at Lewis, and even though it's a photograph, I'm pretty sure he saw my soul.

KBLOW's right about what's a good attitude to have in general, and you're right that I was being a little more specific to Thompson with this. I don't know about the legacy thing. I obviously won't be suicidal if Roseboro goes to NC State, but that would feel like a recruiting loss to me in a way that missing on Thompson might not.
Again, though, I'll be pleased if Thompson chooses Michigan, so this really isn't me saying that I don't want him.
|1 day 16 hours ago||If most of these guys||
If most of these guys progress as they should, I think our secondary goes from so-so in 2013 to good in 2014 to great in 2015. With only Taylor and Hollowell(?) scheduled to leave, the 2015 DB group looks so promising: Countess (SR), Wilson (SR), Peppers (SO), Lewis (JR), Stribling (JR), Thomas (JR), Hill (JR), Clark (JR), Watson (SO / RS FR), Richardson (JR), Dawson (SO), Kinnel (FR), Taylor (FR), and hopefully another freshman. There should be top-end talent, depth, a ton of playing experience, and hopefully their fifth year under the same defensive coordinator.
I really hope we come out of 2014 with some momentum and coaching stability. I want to see these coaches have a chance with the roster they've built once it's all grown up.

Not that I know anything, but my best guess is along these lines. The story with him has been that he prefers MSU but his dad wants him to wait on making a decision. Now we hear that his dad is letting him commit earlier than expected and he's suddenly ready to announce. That sounds to me like a tell Hoke no in person / give Michigan one last chance kind of deal, but I could be wrong.
Honestly, he's one of those guys that I'd be happy if we get him and fine if we don't.

Sorry, I somehow posted this comment in the wrong thread.
Go Blue. OSU sucks.

I'm guessing one more.
I think Thompson is MSU-bound, just because the story on him has been that he wants to go to MSU and his dad wants him to wait, and now that his dad is letting him commit earlier than expected he's going to commit.
I'll guess either Lewis or Roseboro commits to UM tomorrow. I'd be thrilled with either of them.

I'd love to see Lewis commit. A Lewis-Taylor-Kinnel secondary class would be outstanding. All heavily pursued, top 200 guys for an already loaded, awesome secondary.
|2 days 13 hours ago||This is a sneaky good class.||
This is a sneaky good class. It's 5th right now in average player rating according to the 247 composite and would be 2nd behind Alabama if we didn't have a kicker in the class (though I'm sure other schools have kickers, too).
Granted, it'll be hard to keep this average quality up as the quantity increases, but I'm definitely not seeing a big recruiting drop-off.

It took me a minute but I finally get this. +1
If I'm being honest with myself, I looked more like the Hair Club for Men guy than like Peppers.

When did Michigan's athletic department hire the guy who did all those 1990s Hair Club for Men before and after shots?
Also, I did not look like Jabrill Peppers as a freshman in college. That's nuts.

That's good news. I hope badassness runs through the whole family.
This was also a good opportunity for me to correct something stupid I've believed (without checking) for a long time. Someone told me that KMFDM stands for "kill motherfucking depeche mode." Believe it or not, it doesn't. Nice to revisit that question a couple of decades later.

I'm a DB critic, but I'm happy when he brings back cool, unique, old Michigan traditions. "WOW experience" is a totally different thing.

I think the "we" varies quite a bit. Normal, healthy Michigan fans didn't know that Marcus Lewis was coming before reading this. Really normal, healthy Michigan fans still don't know. Those of us who spend way too much time on recruiting - myself included - probably picked it up awhile ago.
|6 days 11 hours ago||Interesting. I don't know||
Interesting. I don't know anything about the coaches he's signing up with, but I'd be surprised if a year with Larry Brown wouldn't ultimately be worth at least that much (in the long run) for an NBA prospect like him.

|1 week 3 days ago||It depends on how you think||
It depends on how you think about these things. If the question is "Does the market value college football coaches enough to justify their current salaries?" the answer is clearly yes. College football is big business and getting a top, high-profile coach pays off. If the question is "Do college football coaches' contributions to society justify their current salaries?" the answer - to me - is clearly no.
We live in a system that pays primarily by market value, so it's not surprising that these guys make what they do. But that doesn't mean people shouldn't question whether it's appropriate.
