I'm hoping to see Hoke become a killer DL coach somewhere (NFL or college). We had some close call recruiting losses on the DL in recent years, with Hand, McDowell, etc., and still he left Harbaugh with an unbelievable line. Mattison and Durkin deserve credit, too, but it's one of the few areas from the last coaching staff where talent identification and/or development was outstanding.

Good article. Sounds a lot like the article I would have written about Iowa in 2005.

The nostalgia bug bit me, too, and I just watched a bunch of Hart's highlights. The guy was an unbelievable college running back. Easily the best in Michigan uniform since I became a fan.

I really like Alejandro Zúñiga. (I haven't met him... just his work.) It'd be great to see him covering Michigan sports over the long run.

I love stupid little quirks like playing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" at Michigan football games (and doing it because Harbaugh loves it). That's how traditions start. It's like seeing Slippery Rock scores on the scoreboard, cheering on a back-bending drum major, watching a QB wear #98, or having grown-ups lose their shit over a macaroni noodle at Michigan Stadium. That's what gives Michigan football personality and charm and makes going to Michigan football games so much more fun than seeing games in stale, "brought-to-you-by" atmospheres.

It feels that way in the immediate aftermath of an awesome win, but realistically, no, probably not. Remember that this is a reclamation project. We were 5-7 last season and have finished with fewer than six losses only twice since 2007 (including an 8-5 year). Yes, the recruiting has been good lately, but there was a lot about this program that was broken before Harbaugh got here nine months ago. It's not fair to Harbaugh and probably not accurate to think that we're back to our pre-suck ass-kicking standard. Really, the only immediate turnaround story I can think of is Meyer at OSU, but OSU wasn't down nearly to this extent and Meyer walked into a very soft conference.
I'm thrilled about the future but also expecting (and forgiving of) some bumps along the way.

I like the look of all maize for a big night game, but otherwise I think it's kind of cool the way the maize so clearly distinguishes the student section.

If you disagree with him, that's fine, but at least make an argument. I happen to agree with McMurphy that UCLA and ND will play against each other in both the semifinals and the championship.

This is one of those charts that's simple but awesome.
Was Saturday the first time that a Michigan football team played a team from Nevada?

I think this game will shape predictions for the rest of the season as much as any game in recent memory. If Michigan wins, we'll get a lot of people asking, "Why not us in the Big Ten, with MSU and OSU both coming to Ann Arbor?" If Michigan loses, a lot of people will go back to "it's a long-term project" mode, with expectations closer to 7-5 for the season. In terms of expectations, this feels to me like a huge swing game.

Unless the story has very different quotes (I can't access it), I don't even see the AD speak or "no regrets" stuff. He said, "It might be a fun read that the Big Ten has remorse, but it's somewhat irrelevant." That sounds surprisingly close to "my regrets, while there, are irrelevant," and not the more expected, "nah, Rutgers is great, we love those guys."

That's stupid. Let's be scientific here.
As a high school freshman, he's probably about 14 years old. When he's a contributing upperclassman, he'll be 21 or so. Human height and weight growth is linear throughout our lives (obviously). So add 50% to his current height (6'4") and weight (290 lbs), and a scientific projection is that he'll be about 9'6" and 435 lbs when he's playing for us.

I already feel bad for Saban's daughter. If that part of the rumor isn't true - and I'm suspicious of it - then it's really shitty that she has to put up with this (and soon after getting married). Those rumors and reputations tend to stick with people even if the rumors are totally baseless. Plus, this thread alone has people calling her chubby and weighing in on her hotness, and I'm sure that's happening all over the internet right now.

Shit, now we have to worry about tight end depth with Winovich probably murdering the West Quad student president for political gain.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||Yes, but he can be exposed||
Yes, but he can be exposed for being a dick. If that's really happening, then Clark or Michigan should leak that story so that it gets attention. Those restrictions tend to be forgotten when coaches get "Why are you such a dick?" questions from the media.

This is literally my favorite photograph ever taken. You'd think there'd be some kind of family photo - or maybe an iconic picture of a world event - that would top this for me, but there really isn't. And honestly, it's not close.
|3 weeks 7 hours ago||Good post all around, but||
Good post all around, but since you mention Taysom Hill, here's an article that's kind of interesting. It's a BYU writer arguing that if Hill plays football again it could be via a fifth-year transfer, and Michigan might be a logical landing spot (since Hill cares about academics, there's no incumbent QB at Michigan, Harbaugh recruited Hill to Stanford and stayed in touch with him, etc.).
It seems unlikely but might be something we're talking about in a few months.
|3 weeks 8 hours ago||That's probably true for most||
That's probably true for most schools. Coaches have time during the offseason to recruit, and HS kids aren't busy with school and their own seasons. I just checked OSU, MSU, ND, and Alabama's recruiting classes, and none of them got any commitments in the last month.

It's not that. He's only 3'6" and 52 lbs. right now. Gotta get that kid in a college weight training program.

Shut up, Raoul, and read what people are saying. Beilein is too old and out of touch for this. He needs to fire some assistants and hire only really fucking cool, young guys. We need to start cheating. There's no way that we're going to seriously compete until we do these things.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||If you're talking about||
If you're talking about Winston's tweet, it said this:
My list of schools is now down to 3. Msu, Pitt, and Stanford (no order). Umich no longer an option
That actually sounds closer to "they filled up" than "I don't want to go there." People just interpreted it as the latter because we had no reason to believe that the former was likely.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I think that's a big part of||
I think that's a big part of it. Honestly, as a Beilein-era Michigan basketball fan, I think the most rational move is to ignore recruiting entirely and be grateful that we have a program that wins a lot, is fun to watch, and is an outlier in that it does things the right way.
Plus, for Beilein's commitments, the correlation between the recruiting sites' star ratings and eventual contributions at UM has been so low - if it's even positive - that it's hard to know when to get excited. We've had major successes who stayed low-ranked throughout the process (Burke, LeVert, Albrecht, Dawkins). We've had guys who looked like reaches when Michigan offered/pursued and then their rankings climbed and they became really good players (Hardaway, Stauskas, Robinson). And we've had guys who were really highly ranked but haven't lived up to their hype (Brundridge and we'll see about Chatman).
That's not the usual argument that Beilein recruits tend to outperform their rankings (also true). It's that it's really hard to predict how a Beilein recruit will turn out.

An interesting fact about this recruiting class right now: the 8 highest-rated commits according to 247's composite are all on the offensive side of the ball. That's Bredesen (#35 overall), Onwenu (#86), Mitchell (#90), Peters (#179), Swenson (#188), Hawkins (#208), Hamilton (#234), and Falcon (#236).
