I'd imagine it's similar to what rufftime, our resident Sparty, said above.

A pretty severe punishment? Come on, he pulled a gun on a fellow student.
One of the most nauseating comments around here is this idea that since bad things have happened at Michigan, we're just as bad as everyone else and have no right to comment on anything. Do you honestly think that Delton Williams would remain with the Michigan football program if he did that to a Michigan student? Do you think the University of Michigan would allow that? Hell, in your one example (Gibbons), we have a direct comparison point with MSU. As shitty as Gibbons' conduct seemed, Michigan handled that incident a whole lot more seriously than MSU handled the Payne and Appling incident. MSU had a Final Four streak to preserve, after all.
If Michigan did this, it'd be the lead story on ESPN, the Free Press, and damn near every other publication in America. Hell, Keith Heitzman possibly not getting a fifth scholarship year managed to become the top news story on Yahoo. Maybe that scrutiny and the lack of attention that MSU gets leads us to self-police differently, or maybe it's something else (e.g., our athletic department's power being more constrained by others in the university), but I have a really hard time believing that this would play out similarly at UM.

Oh, fun. Thanks. I'm excited to tell the story of this post in my sure-to-come 30 for 30.

I agree. By my count, there are 55 four-star WRs in this year's 247 composite rankings and 50 of them are at least 6 feet tall. The only way I ever really see recruiting sites evaluated is by how well their rankings predicted NFL draft status. In terms of college productivity, I'd guess that they tend to overrate kids with NFL bodies who might take a long time to develop as players and underrate kids likely to be productive in college but unappealing to the NFL.

You didn't read carefully enough. This is about Braxton Hicks to the wash room. The OP is just really sick of seeing false pregnancy contractions in public.

I think the original critique/concern was way overstated, but I'll admit that I have some questions, too. I'd feel great about all of the low-rated guys if those guys were clearly at the top of our coaches' lists. But they've given out a ton of offers this year, so it hasn't been quite that targeted. And I'm a little uneasy about how many teammates/brothers/etc. of high-level recruits seem to be getting offers. At times it seems like we're willing to use two or three roster spots to (maybe) get one top guy. Unless it's for a Rashan Gary-level recruit, I'm not sold on that approach.
Having said that, I'll cut the coaches - and especially these coaches - a ton of slack on guys they've worked with at camps. And I agree with WolvinLA that recruiting, while important, gets so much attention now that its importance is exaggerated. It's also nice to see comments from Drevno, at Michigan [link] and before then [link], that basically say Harbaugh's the best talent evaluator he's ever seen.

So you're telling me that if Mitchell, who's supposedly down to Michigan and OSU, tried to commit to OSU then Meyer would basically tell him, "That's okay. Go to Michigan."?
Yeah, I'm a little skeptical of that one.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the 2005 Rose Bowl against Texas. A loss, but a damn good game.

I was about to post the exact same photo as migiT, but here's another (in white):
As an aside, LaVell Blanchard is high on my list of all-time Michigan basketball favorites. Great player, great kid, bad timing.

I remember Brent Musburger joking about the great names on (I think) our 1996 team. That team had a Payne, Steele, Irons, Sword, Swett... and a Copenhaver.

In other words, no offense to mid-July threads with 154, 80, and 235 responses, respecitvely, but here's a much more relevant thread -- a look at a generally uninteresting position group class from eight years and three coaches ago (that happens to redirect to your site). This content is fine - in fact, I enjoy this kind of thing - but why do you need to be so condescending and snarky with your posts here?

Disagree. This thread ("Past event in History") is an instant frontrunner for the Most Redundant Thread Title award at this year's MGoBloggies. It also has an outside shot at the Harbaugh Peculiar Capitalization award.

I totally agree. I'm convinced that if we had lost that game in an ugly way (e.g., if the 4th quarter was like the first three), then people would think that jersey was just as hideous as the bumblebees.

For a little while there, he was crazy fun to watch in a "we're not good but had might as well enjoy this" kind of way.

Colin Cowherd and Fox seems like a match made in heaven.
And I agree on Bomani Jones. In my opinion, he's the funniest guy - and one of the smartest guys - at ESPN. I generally hate sports radio, but his show is actually pretty damn good.

Do we know if the (much smaller) numbers that people have been throwing around for peer programs and likely UM bids have been in terms of cash only or cash + apparel?
|1 week 6 days ago||Nice to see that MSU has||
Nice to see that MSU has gotten over its Michigan obsession now that it's won a few football games. I can't imagine the scenario that would end with me opening an RCMB account. And I seriously doubt I'm alone on that.
|1 week 6 days ago||That's really stupid. If||
That's really stupid. If Harbaugh tweets a photo of himself at a McDonald's, he's just doing what half of the other people on Twitter do. It's the media who are deciding to cover all of that crap like it's newsworthy. Harbaugh's just being himself and living his life.

Yeah, I'm talking about the football program, not the state. I'm not sure whether the state sucks. I'm sure that the football program sucks.

After a long post, here's a short one:
Everything about that program pisses me off. They were sketchy under Fulmer, unbearable during the Woodson/Manning thing, and just generally gross now. It's a program that's high on my hate list despite being low on my relevance list.
|2 weeks 4 hours ago||This probably has major holes||
This probably has major holes in it, but what about a firmer policy with LOIs? Something along these lines:
Allow players to sign LOIs any time after their junior seasons (and allow them to take official visits during that year). Make the LOI count for something for both the player and the school. For the player, he can switch to a different school but then would lose a year of eligibility (i.e., couldn't play in his freshman year but wouldn't get a redshirt). For the team, the second that LOI is signed, it counts toward the school's 85 scholarships for the following year regardless of where the player ends up. If a team undergoes a change in head coaches, the LOI is no longer binding in either direction. Players can leave for other schools without penalty and the new coach is not bound to the old coach's signed recruits.
That might be a little rigid, but maybe that's not such a bad thing. It seems like that could reduce the incentives for coaches to make insincere offers to players, players to do the Tyus Battle thing to coaches, and coaches to push kids out at the last minute. It wouldn't prevent a Mike Weber type situation, but I think it's fair to effectively guarantee kids that their head coaches will be there (or they'll be allowed out of their LOIs), even if they have to put up with some position coach changes.

|2 weeks 1 day ago||Great post, Seth. Honestly,||
Great post, Seth. Honestly, if you told me that Michigan basketball could be coached by probably the cleanest coach out there (the chair of the Men's Basketball Ethics Coalition) - and be as competitive as we've been lately (e.g., two conference titles and a Final Four in the past four seasons) - I'd take that in a heartbeat. Even if we don't get as many highs as a Kentucky or Syracuse or whatever, I truthfully wouldn't trade what we have for what they have. College basketball is too gross to me to want to win at all costs.
