Except that in the OSU game he was suddenly unreliable in the moment of need.
I'm glad he could block various Knights and Nits and Boilers over his career ... but we needed him to pick up those Bucks

It would be intersting to speak with Myron about that decision. I have this theory that it was indeed in part about academics.
He's just any old student at U-M. He's BMOC at FSU ... WITHOUT football.
And it worked out just that way: the story was he got crap from some of the FSU coaches for caring too much about academics. And he graduated in three years. And he became a Rhodes scholar.
He was not going to be a Rhodes nominee here. It would have been too hard for him to do that ... too much academic competition. At FSU, he's the smartest kid in his class almost all the time.
Crazy like a fox, that kid.

BTW, in his third year at Bama, Hand is a backup DE with 1 sack and 2.5 TFLs on the season.
He was the #5 overall composite recruit in Jabrill's class.

"didn't give two shits about being there" was a recurring issue for old school Michigan ... Bo and Lloyd both tended to view the Bowl as a 'reward' moreso than "The Be All and End All."
I don't think Harbaugh shares that view. I therefore don't expect we are at risk of the non-chalance of yore.
With respect to '06 in particular, OSU faced a bad matchup vs UF, and then Troy Smith played like 15 lbs overweight off the Heisman, etc post-season awards circuit. He was a fat blob in that game, and played right into the hands of UF's d-line.
In our Rose Bowl, that was the infamous "Andy Moeller lets his o-linemen be chainsmokers" mess. USC's d-line ran circles around our tubby, immobile guys who were gasping for breath before halftime. Though the score was still close at that point, it was obvious we were going to get run into the ground. Then Carroll opened the 2nd half with like 17 straight passes at Morgan Trent and that was all she wrote....

I remember being a skinny ass freshman of maybe 155 pounds, and walking to class at the MLB I sensed something huge near me. I turned to see Skrep just blotting out the sun.
I've been around a bunch of the football players over the years, and many of them have commented on Skrep's size as being just different. It's illogical and hard to explain ... he just seemed huge. Like his size had a presence to it.

Yup, Les worshipped Bo, and does everything he can to pattern himself after his perception of Bo. He very clearly practiced speaking with mannerisms, intonations, etc that he felt sounded like Bo.

I hadn't heard the JoePa one.
Is there any independent source to back this up? Or even just the collective memory of the board? Maybe I missed that one.
Fulmer is the infamous one, obviously. But that would suck if JoePa sucked that bad that he would have us less than #1 after we showed him what's what on Judgement Day in his ugly-ass erector set of a stadium.

While not always true, we have seen enough examples lately of grad transfers working out really well. Whether they just need a fresh start under a different staff, are able to pick a system/lineup that fits their skills, or whatever ... it is not inconceivable that he has a big year wherever he lands.
Therefore, I vote for Pitt, as the one of those four not on our schedule next year.
|1 week 1 day ago||Of course I want the||
Of course I want the Playoffs, but assuming it is the Orange Bowl...
I would much prefer FSU to L'ville. I get the point on the schadenfreude of smashing Petrino, but that game has such little upside for us.
If Jackson runs wild and posterizes our LBs, that would be a miserable way to lose. (Let's not pretend that that couldn't happen -- he did that to FSU, and he basically did that to Clemson on the road, had his WR not misunderstood the downs marker at the end of the game.)
If we smoke them, there is a collective "who cares?" reaction from the rest of the country. They did just lose to Kentucky, after all.
FSU, or even Oklahoma, would be perceived as a premium match up, and a fittingly noteworthy one at the end of a Top 5-caliber season.
|1 week 1 day ago||I think you might be||
I think you might be over-reading the context of his comment in '05. I wouldn't confuse an 'atta boy' for his Badgers with any positive feelings toward Michigan.
He might have respected us as a powerhouse back in the day, but I have met very, very few Badgers who have anything other than disdain toward us. Like the Illini and to some extent the Hawkeyes, they tend to view us as the devil. And that tends to be a deeply ingrained emotion.
|1 week 3 days ago||Correct on the '02 PSU game.||
Correct on the '02 PSU game. All their complaints are correctly classified as whining because the play with the bad call never happens if they don't get the gift PI right before that. Put them together and you have a highly emotional but ultimately correct outcome there.
Yes, yes, Illinois 2000 was a fiasco, as was 2002 Washington ... and VaTech ought to be pissed for forever because that was a bowl game and therefore of national value. But what this thread really ought to more specifically ask is: has there been any notable instance of a blatantly sketchy call going our way in the OSU series that turned the game for us when it shouldn't have?
We all know the Bucks have had things break their way in the past, before Saturday's screwing. But I can't remember glaring (game-changing) instances in our favor against them.
|1 week 3 days ago||On Gentry...||
Not sure how many caught it, but on OSU's first FG attempt, the camera caught Gentry as the designated kick blocker up the middle. He jumped WAY up.
Pretty athletic looking for a 6'7"ish dude. Clearly the coaches saw significant evidence of that in practice or they don't put him in that role in that game.
Thought it was worth noting, given the discussion on his potential role next year in this podcast.

I believe in Michigan.
I believe that one of my fellow alums, one of the professors on campus or even one of the gifted young members of the student body has what it takes. Because this must be done.
We need to master the time-space continuum.
We need to invent time travel.
Because, God as my witness, we MUST get this into Lloyd's hands ahead of the 2005 Ohio State game. We can't let him call that punt late in the fourth and let Troy Smith March down the field in our house unimpeded, taking our program's manhood away in front of the whole wide world.
Come on Leaders and Best. Do this one little thing. Set the world back to what is right and true and good.
|1 week 6 days ago||The biggest problem with the||
The biggest problem with the quick throw WCO stuff is how agressively their D plays up at the line. Go look at that first screen shot Seth had at the top of the article. They do that a lot ... they are ready to jump right in the grills of receivers on stuff near the LOS.
I think we need to get some misdirection and some play-action stuff going to at least get them to pause, if not back up a bit.
The 1-2-Fire! stuff might keep Wilton standing, but I don't think that will move the ball much at the start of the game.

I think ... well, I hope ... we will see Harbaugh find some little teal halos on a couple of their guys that you didn't (as most of us wouldn't), Seth.

While no one in their right minds expected 313 yards, that wasn't entirely out of nowhere. He was having a great year going into The Game, and was running behind a terrific line.
I'm not sure what the parallel would be here.

"Could probably give the edge to OSU" in the mid-90s?
In 95-96 they went 22-1 against everyone not named Michigan.
Yes we underachieved those two seasons, but even if we played closer to where we should have those were monster OSU teams.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Not that impressed?||
No, no ... Harbaugh was on Weber like white on rice on the night before signing day.
Thought we had him right up until the Higdon flip came out. That was the final straw for Mikey ... or he thought it was final, until he THEN found out the very O$U coach who was throwing shade at Harbs was in fact himself exiting stage left just days later.
Poor dude got yanked around. And now he's cursed with being only a Buckeye for his whole life, when he could have been a Wolverine. It's a shame, but sometimes you gotta play a weak hand.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||That '05 punt to let Troy||
That '05 punt to let Troy Smith march it down the field in our house (with everyone knowing we couldn't do anything at all to stop it, other than hold our breath and hope for a fumbled snap) for the game winner was the epitome of what many of us despised about the latter half of Lloyd's reign.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||JD Lewis is pretty good at||
JD Lewis is pretty good at getting off blocks and tackling in space (especially for being a pretty small dude). I think that is one more reason why we'll see him in the slot on Samuel frequently.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see some earlier-down snaps (maybe many, depending on how our DL is doing) where we pull either McCray or Gedeon and pull Delano H up into their spot (on the outside). I'd rather take my chances with extra speed than extra (or even standard) brawn. Because Urban is going to work those edges really hard.
Huge game for Taco, Wormley and Gary to consistently set the edge.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||In the world of having to||
In the world of having to pick your poison a bit, I'll gamble on Stribling versus Brown in coverage.
If our DL is getting pressure on Barrett, he is a lot less likely to do consistent damage in that matchup. Strib isn't JD, but he's pretty darned solid in coverage. Brown is good, but he isn't a straight up mismatch.
Brown is probably better downfield than Samuels, but Samuels is the game changer for them.

|3 weeks 1 day ago||If our DL shows up huge and||
If our DL shows up huge and stymies the traditional elements of their run game by blowing through their OL (which could happen), I wouldn't be totally shocked to see us move Delano Hill into one of the LB spots and put Tyree K. in at S (sure wish we still had Clark) so that Hill and Peppers could take Barrett and Samuel in space. This is a game where we will be very thankful for two lockdown corners who might be able to buy us room for that sort of creativity.
Urban has to be thinking of all sorts of ways to get those two isolated on McCray and Gedeon in space, especially on the edge. I expect JH and Brown are going full Mad Scientist to come up with counters to that.

Trading away Miggy would be about as dark a day in Detroit sports history as the day Barry Sanders just up and quit football. Misery....
(And yes, yes ... I know they aren't equivalent situations bc we would get a lot in return for Miggy ... I'm just talking about the soul-crushing factor)

Why does O'Korn under center bring the screen game back?
His arm is not supposed to be a cannon, nor is he all about the mental game. He's distinguished by his mobility more than anything else, right?
Given his supposed propensity for TOs, I doubt Harbaugh puts things back in the playbook that are deemed higher risk.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Harbaugh lost his mind in||
Harbaugh lost his mind in this game, being dead-set on forcing a very obivously off-kilter Speight to try to win it. Just take what was there and this was a simple win.
Being stubborn cost Bo dearly in some of his most promising seasons. This looked a lot like that.

Auburn showed themselves to be pretenders today, hot streak or no. UGa is sorry this year, so that is a BAD loss.
$EC's got nothing after Bama.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Yes our '85 D was incredibly||
Yes our '85 D was incredibly fierce, but Iowa actually marched up and down the field on us in that game ... we just did a terrific job of tightening up in the red zone. We kept holding them out of the end zone and forcing them to kick FGs.
So while it broke our hearts that they kicked the game-winner at the end, it wasn't like they hadn't earned it. They very much outplayed us overall that day. We hardly moved the ball at all.
As crazy as it may seem in the now-longstanding context of boring Iowa offenses and the romantic ideals we often attach to the Bo era, Fry's O lapped ours (with Jimmy under center) and then some in that game. Chuck Long was a man.
