33 weeks 6 days ago How about the Sparty OT commit?

Ace, what did you think of Finley?

I don't want to read too much into your comment about the CT line's struggles -- and the absence of praise for Finely.  (well, actually I *DO* want to ... but figure I should ask)

1 year 3 weeks ago Mistaken Massey

You show Pat as a 3/4* borderline.  I think you were thinking of Mike, the TE, class of '04.

Pat was a near-consensus 4*+ guy in the same class as Pierre Woods -- 2001?

In the 'where is he now' annals, Pat is a big-time guy (for his age) in high finance these days, just FYI.  Works at a very well-established private investment firm in OH.

1 year 8 weeks ago Great Daily article, BUT...

... the editors need to bone up on their Michigan timeline: in the spring of 1990 the Fab Five were not months away from enrolling, they were a year and a few months away.

1991 was a pretty darned good calendar year in Michigan sports, following up on the disappointment of 1990 (which included the aforementioned hockey tourney screwing; the Bo Kimble and Loyola catastrophe in hoops; being ranked #1 in football twice only to lose the heartbreaker at ND and the Sparty mugging of Desmond in the end zone on the extra point, relegating a very talented team to the Gator Bowl; and missing on Michigan uber-legacy Eric Montross in hoops recruiting).

In 1991, Desmond won the Heisman and we earned a trip to the Rose Bowl, the Fab Five signed on in the Spring and then immediately turned the world upside down whenthey showed up in the Fall, and we finally made the NCAA hockey tournament that Spring.

Among the students who were hard core sports fans, I wouldn't say the hockey part of that was as big as the others (it clearly wasn't) ... but emotionally it was HUGE.  The sense of relief, accomplishment and pride for that group of guys was really palpable on campus.  I think everyone who had felt that kick in the gut along with the 1990 team was openly overjoyed in 1991.  I remember people hugging in the stands and screaming their minds out about it.  To me it was the start of what would become Yost as we know it.

1 year 10 weeks ago Lacy not practicing is about

Lacy not practicing is about as devastating to them as Mike Hart not practicing while he was here.  In other words, big whoop.  The guy is an absolute load, better than any RB we faced last year.  He has seen tons of action already, and that is a veteran OL and QB he's working with.

In fact, it is almost less of a big deal to them than when Mike H didn't practice for us.  With Lacy out, that other Hart (Dee) and early enrollee TJ Yeldon with both get tons of valuable reps.

Bama's backfield may not have the foursome that LSU rolled out there ... but their top three are better, IMO (assuming Dee is all the way back by the fall).  Devastating group, esp since those OLs came back rather than jumping early.

I'm assuming Demens is up worrying at night about tackling Lacy.  At least he had better be.  He has to play his best game of his career, period.  As does BWC, to state a more obvious one.  Lacy is going to be running downhill right at those two ... hopefully not right through them though!!

1 year 10 weeks ago Bama's QB

IDK Hart20 ... my Bama in-laws (veteran eyes, to say the least) seem to think McCarron projects out as the best QB they've had in quite some time.

He clearly got a LOT better as the season went on last year.  He looked pretty darned good against that LSU D in the title game.

Would really like your thoughts breaking down the Va Tech-Stanford bowl game and either of the Clemson games from this year.

Interested to see what you find worked so effectively against the Hokies, rather than seeing what didn't work against them.

1 year 47 weeks ago Rasmus

I totally agree with you Rasmus.  Methinks this is your proverbial high ceiling late bloomer.  The staff uncovered a gem, and he happens to be a kid who understands 1) the value of a scholarship to Michigan and 2) that a gray shirt can very well be playing to the strength of a late bloomer.

I think Tim is just wrong on this one.  The fact pattern speaks pretty loudly.

1 year 47 weeks ago ? for Tim

2 years 1 week ago That move is more likely than

That move is more likely than the reverse, as a general rule.  Lots and lots of recruits are labelled OTs coming in, only to be moved inside.  Schilling, Omameh, Zirbel, McAvoy, Ciulla, Gallimore (yes, yes, a muderer's row there toward the end I know....).

For the most part, that is a doable transition.  It is the rare beast whose lanky OL build necessitates a stay outside.

2 years 1 week ago Sheldon Day

I noticed the same thing rockydude ... surprised a clear top 100 guy on scout (at DT, no less ... widely viewed by coaches as a tough spot to grab athletes) didn't even make the top 250 on rivals.

TomVH, would certainly love to hear your thoughts on Day and Michigan....

2 years 33 weeks ago Kinda glad the Rock game clip

Kinda glad the Rock game clip wasn't in HD.  I didn't need to have it presented to me even more glaringly that what we just got.  Yikes.

2 years 34 weeks ago Those who thought Brian was

Those who thought Brian was overly harsh on Ezeh really surprise me.  I thought Ezeh was as spectacularly missing from the play as I have ever seen him.

I was actually hoping to read a snide remark from Brian in the breakdown of the late 1H play where Kovacs forced the fumble.  Yes Leach completely FAILed on that play, but watch Obi ... he does his little pause and then AGAIN runs the wrong way.  Mouton started right away and took a step outside/upfield on the front side of the play.  The RB was looking backside before he got the ball and never thought about going elsewhere.  Obi basically just decides he is going to throw himself into the strength of the line as a (semi-)speeding bullet.  He just runs up into the wash and makes himself entirely irrelevant as a defender.  In fact, Mouton has seen where the RB is going and is trying to come across the line and has found a hole (it won't work if he makes it, because he's too far away ... but at least he is doing what he can), but Obi plows into him from behind.

???

There is no question that Leach was just a disaster here.  But Obi ought to have been defender #2 on the scene of the tackle, but instead he does what he specializes in: he goes in completely the wrong direction.

The MLB spot in this D ought to make plays.  Obi doesn't.  He's just a mess of a football player.  He has anti-instincts.

2 years 34 weeks ago I'm hoping it was a bit more

I'm hoping it was a bit more Ed Reed "I'm hurt dawg!" than Tebow tears ... but either way we definitely could use Roh to just go off from this point on.  He is the highest-ceiling game changer among our D starters.

2 years 36 weeks ago I don't think I discredited

I don't think I discredited his talent whatsoever -- if it read that way, then that was my bad.

I'm just saying running like Gulliver through the Lilliputians isn't telling us anything one way or another.

Re: the impact of being the son of a coach, I hope you are right in the end.  But I am keeping my expectations there in check.  I don't think saying he should redshirt is any sort of rip on the kid ... just a recognition of what level of football he is coming from.  I see no reason he can't be coached up.  And a redshirt is a good thing much more often than it isn't.

2 years 36 weeks ago Ruh roh

Someone is harshing the mellow of mgoblog's recruiting vibe....

2 years 36 weeks ago The O in Oakland Co stands for OUCH!

It is just painful to watch football played as poorly as it is in the 248.

Awfully hard to tell much about Conway's film, other than he is a sure-fire redshirt candidate.  #1 the level of competition in that league is just pathetic.  #2 (probably in no small part as a result of #1) he just doesn't do much at all right now in the critical elements of the higher levels of the game -- sharp routes, reacting to the play (quite noticable on D), etc.  #3 it is awfully hard to tell how fast he is because he's just long-striding around out there without any need for precise body movements, 100% effort, etc.

I wonder what he'll think of the ball coming at him on a rope from Devin, Denard or even Tate ... it will certainly be a new experience for him.  As will any element of physicality whatsoever.  He won't have Tyler McButterpants standing opposite him to just discard at will (like he does when he wants to throughout that film).

Time will tell if that brings out the best in him or if he remains a 'project.'  Certainly hoping for the former, but (through no fault of his own) I don't think we'll see much evidence either way this fall.

2 years 38 weeks ago Clarklakeblue...

The reason they don't transfer in is the same reason we don't see JuCos but once in a blue moon: the University won't recognize the credits they've earned.

So unless you see an Ivy Leaguer decide he needs to give up his lottery ticket in order to wear the winged helmet, we will continue to not see transfers-in much/ever.  Just like it was under Lloyd, Gary, Bo, Bump....

It is a University thing, not a commentary on the coach or the football program.

2 years 39 weeks ago moving someone to CB

I don't see it among our WRs ... but I will be interested to see if they ask Mike Shaw to do it (assuming he's even academically eligible).  No whispers to this end yet, just the following reasoning:

Lloyd initially lost him to Jopes because U-M wanted him at corner but PSU promised him RB.  The Old Man was too classy to throw the snake oil comment out there, but RR gave him the same treatment as he gave Tiller on teammate Roundtree.

Carr's crew was generally of the opinion that Shaw had high end potential at CB.  There was some minor talk of a Woodson analogy -- though that was always clarified as NOT a prediction of the "next Charles Woodson," but moreso just physically reminiscent (size/speed combo, body type, very good quickness, two-way standout from OH, etc) and the potential to be very good at the spot.

IMO CB and RB have some parallel in that experience (while useful) can be trumped (or at least in part covered up for) by elite athleticism.  I don't take Shaw's flaws-to-date as a RB (goes down too easily, prone to misread/mistime the hole, sometimes dances) as fatal flaws for his theoretical prospects at CB.

There are early whispers of a little personal maturation needed, so I am keeping my expectations in check on J-Rob this fall.

2 years 41 weeks ago Buffalo Stampede

So if RR pulls this one out in 2011 as Devin-to-Denard-to-Devin (or the reverse), does that constitute MGoPorn?

Tim had pretty considerable back injury issues, no?  He certainly didn't have the mobility that was hoped for in recruiting.
