I think the stat is that UGa has more top 300 recruits than the rest of the $EC combined.
Rough go for UF and Tennecheat this year.

The Legwand trade was a "big deal" only to armchair GMs.
The issue with the club is NOT the absence of Patrick Eaves and Calle Jarnkrok. It is the absence of star players (F and D) to anchor around.
You can't win in the NHL without difference makers. Much was rightly made of our team depth through the glory years ... but all depth and no stars means no chance to win. Zero.
We have no superstars. Glad for Larkin and Mantha (and AA, to some extent), who can be legit, important NHL players. But neither of them appear to be superstar-level players. We need a superstar C, a superstar D, and another star F and star D.
It's going to be a long, long process, I'm afraid.

It would be cool to see the draft order, not just the alphabetized results. Like, was Nico Mariota's 2nd rounder? His 8th?

I'd prefer Faster Brady to Beeger Brady
If he can pick up the occasional first down with his feet when a play breaks down, that can go a long way in tight games. Bigness ... meh.

Who is saying a 5-star RB is all we need?
What does talking about the formula for the '97 title have to do with anything?
Who is saying a 5-star RB is now necessary in CFB to win a title?
None of these "points" have anything to do with how valuable Najee projects to be if he dons the winged helmet. The fact is there is ample reason to think that he changes our near-term projections signficantly if he chooses Michigan.

Getting snaps, but limited snaps.
He's about to get himself a ring, though ... that's what he's doing.
Once the guys ahead of him go pro this year, it will be interesting to see what he does as a starter.
|7 weeks 1 day ago||L'il Hutch||
If he is like his daddy (perhaps one of the least-remembered Michigan all-Americans these days, thanks to modern history starting in approx the mid-90s with the spread of the internet and all), he will be a monster on the d-line.
I'll take the high side of the over/under bet on whether history judges him worthy of Rivals250 / Scout300 acclaim.

I'm assuming the multi-billionare will be smart enough (or have advisors smart enough) to remind him/her that he/she would have to pay taxes on his/her winnings ... and the "headline" amount is the PV of the annuity option, not the immediate payout... and therefore $500MM is not nearly enough to cover the cost of 212MM tickets.
The post-tax, balloon payout of a "$500MM jackpot" is a little less than $200MM. So a pretty bad deal on $424MM of ticket purchases to ensure victory while hoping to not split the pot.

They have some young talent on the DL. And Lewerke didn't look entirely hopeless at QB.
Big issues on the OL though ... not sure who they have there that would give them hope. Then again, I've thought that in the past but somehow the Spartan "conditioning program" works its magic.

Coombs was also the point guy in landing Michael Jordan out of Plymouth last year, IIRC.

It would be intersting to speak with Myron about that decision. I have this theory that it was indeed in part about academics.
He's just any old student at U-M. He's BMOC at FSU ... WITHOUT football.
And it worked out just that way: the story was he got crap from some of the FSU coaches for caring too much about academics. And he graduated in three years. And he became a Rhodes scholar.
He was not going to be a Rhodes nominee here. It would have been too hard for him to do that ... too much academic competition. At FSU, he's the smartest kid in his class almost all the time.
Crazy like a fox, that kid.

BTW, in his third year at Bama, Hand is a backup DE with 1 sack and 2.5 TFLs on the season.
He was the #5 overall composite recruit in Jabrill's class.
|11 weeks 2 days ago||"didn't give two shits about||
"didn't give two shits about being there" was a recurring issue for old school Michigan ... Bo and Lloyd both tended to view the Bowl as a 'reward' moreso than "The Be All and End All."
I don't think Harbaugh shares that view. I therefore don't expect we are at risk of the non-chalance of yore.
With respect to '06 in particular, OSU faced a bad matchup vs UF, and then Troy Smith played like 15 lbs overweight off the Heisman, etc post-season awards circuit. He was a fat blob in that game, and played right into the hands of UF's d-line.
In our Rose Bowl, that was the infamous "Andy Moeller lets his o-linemen be chainsmokers" mess. USC's d-line ran circles around our tubby, immobile guys who were gasping for breath before halftime. Though the score was still close at that point, it was obvious we were going to get run into the ground. Then Carroll opened the 2nd half with like 17 straight passes at Morgan Trent and that was all she wrote....

I remember being a skinny ass freshman of maybe 155 pounds, and walking to class at the MLB I sensed something huge near me. I turned to see Skrep just blotting out the sun.
I've been around a bunch of the football players over the years, and many of them have commented on Skrep's size as being just different. It's illogical and hard to explain ... he just seemed huge. Like his size had a presence to it.

I hadn't heard the JoePa one.
Is there any independent source to back this up? Or even just the collective memory of the board? Maybe I missed that one.
Fulmer is the infamous one, obviously. But that would suck if JoePa sucked that bad that he would have us less than #1 after we showed him what's what on Judgement Day in his ugly-ass erector set of a stadium.

While not always true, we have seen enough examples lately of grad transfers working out really well. Whether they just need a fresh start under a different staff, are able to pick a system/lineup that fits their skills, or whatever ... it is not inconceivable that he has a big year wherever he lands.
Therefore, I vote for Pitt, as the one of those four not on our schedule next year.
|12 weeks 12 hours ago||Of course I want the||
Of course I want the Playoffs, but assuming it is the Orange Bowl...
I would much prefer FSU to L'ville. I get the point on the schadenfreude of smashing Petrino, but that game has such little upside for us.
If Jackson runs wild and posterizes our LBs, that would be a miserable way to lose. (Let's not pretend that that couldn't happen -- he did that to FSU, and he basically did that to Clemson on the road, had his WR not misunderstood the downs marker at the end of the game.)
If we smoke them, there is a collective "who cares?" reaction from the rest of the country. They did just lose to Kentucky, after all.
FSU, or even Oklahoma, would be perceived as a premium match up, and a fittingly noteworthy one at the end of a Top 5-caliber season.
|12 weeks 12 hours ago||I think you might be||
I think you might be over-reading the context of his comment in '05. I wouldn't confuse an 'atta boy' for his Badgers with any positive feelings toward Michigan.
He might have respected us as a powerhouse back in the day, but I have met very, very few Badgers who have anything other than disdain toward us. Like the Illini and to some extent the Hawkeyes, they tend to view us as the devil. And that tends to be a deeply ingrained emotion.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||Correct on the '02 PSU game.||
Correct on the '02 PSU game. All their complaints are correctly classified as whining because the play with the bad call never happens if they don't get the gift PI right before that. Put them together and you have a highly emotional but ultimately correct outcome there.
Yes, yes, Illinois 2000 was a fiasco, as was 2002 Washington ... and VaTech ought to be pissed for forever because that was a bowl game and therefore of national value. But what this thread really ought to more specifically ask is: has there been any notable instance of a blatantly sketchy call going our way in the OSU series that turned the game for us when it shouldn't have?
We all know the Bucks have had things break their way in the past, before Saturday's screwing. But I can't remember glaring (game-changing) instances in our favor against them.
|12 weeks 2 days ago||On Gentry...||
Not sure how many caught it, but on OSU's first FG attempt, the camera caught Gentry as the designated kick blocker up the middle. He jumped WAY up.
Pretty athletic looking for a 6'7"ish dude. Clearly the coaches saw significant evidence of that in practice or they don't put him in that role in that game.
Thought it was worth noting, given the discussion on his potential role next year in this podcast.

I believe in Michigan.
I believe that one of my fellow alums, one of the professors on campus or even one of the gifted young members of the student body has what it takes. Because this must be done.
We need to master the time-space continuum.
We need to invent time travel.
Because, God as my witness, we MUST get this into Lloyd's hands ahead of the 2005 Ohio State game. We can't let him call that punt late in the fourth and let Troy Smith March down the field in our house unimpeded, taking our program's manhood away in front of the whole wide world.
Come on Leaders and Best. Do this one little thing. Set the world back to what is right and true and good.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||The biggest problem with the||
The biggest problem with the quick throw WCO stuff is how agressively their D plays up at the line. Go look at that first screen shot Seth had at the top of the article. They do that a lot ... they are ready to jump right in the grills of receivers on stuff near the LOS.
I think we need to get some misdirection and some play-action stuff going to at least get them to pause, if not back up a bit.
The 1-2-Fire! stuff might keep Wilton standing, but I don't think that will move the ball much at the start of the game.
