Dune is an all time favorite…

Dune is an all time favorite. I'm waiting to see Part 2 on Imax this weekend, but none of the on-screen adaptations can really do the book proper justice.

I have also read Three Body Problem. The backdrop of it taking place during the Chinese Cultural Revoluton adds a lot of depth to what is otherwise a sort of very science-y alien sci-fi that poses some interesting existential questions.

Weiss's contribution to recruiting was to blow Dante Moore

A development-based strategy…

A development-based strategy doesn't work nearly as well when they guys can walk and the door and will get poached with NIL offers from other teams.

Even if you are not putting NIL behind high schoolr recruiting or buying transfer, you still need a competitive NIL program just to hang on to your own roster. Just go ask Hunter Dickinson.

Yeah, Shemy was obviously a…

Yeah, Shemy was obviously a complete own-goal, but im not really sure how any background checks could have known that Matt Weiss going to hack into student email accounts or that Stalions was going to hire sign scouters from Craigslist.

Its depth of the plot and…

Its depth of the plot and the detail that went into the world-building is what made the Dune books so beloved by its fans.

Its basically a sci-fi epic with the plot depth of Game of Thrones and the detailed world-bulding of Lord of the Rings.

Sort of a weird scale.

Sort of a weird scale.

Instead of "average" => "good" => "great" its "average" => "plus" => "good"

We have 5 "plus" starters, which I translate as "good starting caliber pros" but not neccesarily "great."

Is this entire post really… Is this entire post really over one hour of legal work?

1). Are we truly on the hook for any costs incurred after we employed another attorney and the original was informed of being off the case?

100% yes. "Review and sign substitution paperwork - .2 hours, email client and new attorney about paperwork - .2 hours, file paperwork - .2 hours." That sounds like real time that the attorney spent on your behalf. If the new lawyer calls up the old lawyer and spends an hour on the phone getting up to speed on the case, then that's still an hour spent on your behalf. She may be "off the case" but you are still asking her to spend time doing work for you.

2). Does any of what I've described add up to any sort of meaningful misconduct or incompetence that could warrant any sort of formal complaint? Obviously when everything is said and done I'll blast the firm on Google reviews but curious if there's anything more that can be done.

Your description suggests general incompetence, not fraud. I don't think any lawyer in history has ever been disbarred for mispelling names.

3). Should this be a diary?

You probably should have done something else with the hour or so that it took to type this up.

Seems like this would be a…

Seems like this would be a nice get if they can woo him away from MacDonald and the Seahawks. Former Ravens assistant, current D-Line coach, would potentially plug right in for Minter/Elston.

This might be justified if…

This might be justified if coaches were leaving for other college programs, but these guys are all specifically following Jim to the NFL.

Is working for 38 year Sherrone Moore less attractive than working for Jim Harbuagh in the NFL?

Yes, that's probably true on its face, but that doesn't equate to "doubts" about Sherrone.

That being said, this does expose my #1 question/concern with hiring Sherrone: Can he attract/hire/retain/develop coaching assistants? IMO, that's the #1 job for a college head coach.

Sherrone needs to find and hire a defensive coordinator and fast. I'm sure part of the issue with Elston was "If you aren't going to make me defensive coordinator, can you at least tell me who my boss going to be?

Who is Jordan Strack?  Am I…

You son of a bitch.

May he be remembered forever for the most testosterone-ladden handshake of all time:

I assume that the AD sets an…

I assume that the AD sets an overall budget for coaching salaries, and then its up to the head coach to determine how to allocate the salary to build out his staff. Requesting a budget for coodinators and staff should have been an integral part of Sherrone's contract negotiation.

But if Herbert was really asking for a 10-year guaranteed contract at $3 MM a year then there is probably not much that could be done to retain him. Last year Sherrone and Minter each made close to 1MM each. Ben Herbert was already getting paid nearly as much as each of Michigan's coordinators.

I know fans want to believe that coaches salaries are just like imaginary numbers, but there's really no way to afford spending that much for an S&C coach when you still have to go out and hire an OC and DC and have a bunch of other coaches who you are desparately trying to retain, who are also looking for raises.

So you're saying its not too…

So you're saying its not too late to send in my resume?

They need to fight hard to…

They need to fight hard to retain Minter. Michigan brings back a ton of talent on the defensive side; they could easily have a top 5 defense or better again next year if they find a way to bring Minter back. You would have to get pretty creative to fight off Harbaugh and the Chargers -- he obviously wants to be a head coach sooner rather than later so you would have to convice him the staying in college will benefit him long term. I'm not conviced that Warde is the guy who can make that sale.

On the offensive side, it feels like you need to find some experience. With Harbaugh gone, there's approximately 1 year of OC/offensive play calling experience on the entire coaching staff.

I know the prevailing sentiment appears to be that retaining the "culture" is more than enough to make up for any lack of coaching experience, recruiting, NIL, etc, but I'm at little apprehensive to throw 100% our our eggs into the "culture" basket.

Can't wait for Mahmoud to…

Can't wait for Mahmoud to weigh in on the coaching search.

Better, offer Minter $6…

Better, offer Minter $6 million a year to be the new head coach at Michigan. I love Sherrone, but Minter is the more elite coordinator of the two.

Bump Sherrone's salary to $2.5-3 million a year to retain him, then bump Clink or Elston to DC and backfill the rest.

Priority should be on keeping Minter and as much of the current staff as possible. Its a way better letting Minter leave with Harbaugh and go into next season with a rookie head coach AND two new coordinators.

This sounds right, but the…

This sounds right, but the big difference is that in college the S&C coach is the only coach that has regular access to the players during the offseason. A lot of the team culture is forged during those offseason "practices" in the weight room.

So in college you moreso need a coach who mirrors the style and culture of the head coach, not just a kinesiologist who cranks out training and diet plans.

I like Sherrone a lot, but…

I like Sherrone a lot, but if Harbuagh leaves, I hope we hire someone with head coaching experience and enough cachet to attract and hire an elite staff.

I'm confident that it MLK…

I'm confident that it MLK were alive today, he would still be dedicated to the cause for which he spent his entire life: fighting for racial justice.

I saw Burke was coming back…

I saw Burke was coming back yesterday, and adding Egbuka is pretty huge. Hate to see OSU have nice things, but its good for college football to be able to have guys like that stick around.

I assume there is still a chance that Henderson could return as welll?

OSU is always going to have big time talent at the skill positions, the bigger question will be if they can finally compete with Michigan on the line of scrimmage.

I was on the chat during the Rose Bowl and there were multiple working links being shared during the game.

Seems like a decent fellow, it's just hard to bring up Nick Sheridan's name without immediately wincing at painful memories of the bad ol days.

Throw at 0:55 is decent, but…

Throw at 0:55 is decent, but the receiver had already beaten the defender so badly that he was able to turn around and face the QB. He basically throws it up there and gives the reciever a chance to make a nice play. Most of the credit for that play has to go to the receiver.

But the throw at 1:55 is special - he evades two different rushers, then throws a dime 40 yards into the end zone, and hits the receiver right in the chest, while a defender is drapped all over him. Definitely one of the nicest throws I've seen all year.

OR this was actually a minor…

OR this was actually a minor incident that was blown way out of proportion by people on the board who have want to move on from Juwan for performance reasons, and did not actually support a finding of discipline to anyone involved.

Are you even serious right…

Are you even serious right now?

Are you talking about the same football program where the head coach was banned from the sidelines for 6 games this season? Nobody cares about it for football because we are winning.

And you can be sure that if we were winning big in basketball you would not hear any of this silly pearl clutching about two men who raised their voices in a nasty tone.

Michigan's offense under…

Michigan's offense under Harbaugh prioritizes winning games, not generating shiny quaterback statistics. If you're a QB who is mainly concerned with a statline, then you're not coming to Michigan, period.

Its probably still zero,…

Its probably still zero, since Steve Hutchinson and Aidan Hutchinson are unrelated.

Yeah, next year's schedule…

Yeah, next year's schedule is truly bonkers. Texas, Washington, Oregon, USC and Ohio State, all during the regular season.

What will interesting to see is how it affects access to the 12 team playoff. If Michigan goes 3-2 against 5 of the best teams in the country could they still make the playoff as a non-conference champ?

Expect a fake punt somewhere…

Expect a fake punt somewhere.

And take the ball out of the hands of their best player?

In realtime I was thinking…

In realtime I was thinking they should go for it on 4th down, but I'm pretty sure that kicking the field goal on 4th and forcing OSU to go for a touchdown was the right call.

But they definitely needed to dial up a potential first down play on 3rd down. Basically you have one play there to win the whole ball game. Running inside on 3rd and 6th makes no sense if you plan to kick the field goal anyway.

Its basically a "free" play at that point: Make the first down and win the game, or you don't make it and its the same field goal. You can even take a small loss on a sack, and you're still in comfortable field goal range.

You basically have a free play to try to pick up 6 yards to win the game. At that point, you should be running whatever play you would you use if you were trailing in the final seconds of the game and were trying to pick up 4th and 6 to keep the drive alive.

I think the issue was that Partridge was perceived to have been coaching players in what to say to NCAA investigators during player interviews.

I think this is what he means by having been a "source of support to, through thick and thin, to every student-athlete."

Was there something that was supposed to be here?

Court proceedings are…

Court proceedings are typically open to the public.

You're fine to show up and sit quietly as long as you don't try to record the proceedings on your cell phone (which I believe constitutes impermissible in-person scouting).

I love the shit out of you…

I love the shit out of you guys.

Yeah, that's not going to…

Yeah, that's not going to happen. ACC teams receive a payout that is almost half of what B1G teams receive.

Nobody wants to watch Michigan play Cal or UNC or Wake Forest, and TV execs certainly aren't going to pay top dollar for it.

This would result in Michigan taking a dramatic pay cut, which makes no sense in a world driven by NIL (and probably direct player payments sooner or later).

If Michigan leaves the B1G, the smartest move would be the Notre Dame model, where they go independent for football and remain in the B1G for the other sports. That's the only way for Michigan to avoid significant dilution of their brand value.

The antitrust angle won't be…

The antitrust angle won't be part of Michigan's case - that will focus almost entirely on whether the B1G has followed its own rules and norms in sanctioning Michigan.

The antitrust angle is interesting because it would potentially mean the rule would go away. However if the antitrust case were filed and won tomorrow, I don't think it would impact Michigan's case in any way since Michigan's punishment would be based on violations of whatever rules that were in place at the time.

Seth, that's awesome that you are are volunteering for elections.

I've been an election volunteer for years (mostly as legal election protection volunteer, but I've also been involved in machine inspections and a little bit of everything else).

Its decidedly unglamorous, but important work.  Thank you.
