Yes, I had higher expectations for his working knowledge of physiology; but yeah, 2 days later is not lactic acid but DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), as you indicated. However, I guess a good miler can be helpful in other ways, like keeping loose and such. |

I recently learned about this guy Brian Letscher from "Scandal". Unfortunately I don't watch enough non-sports-related television to know anything about the show. I only found out about him because he was a guest on the Fantasy Focus Football podcast recently (11/25) and revealed that he played football at Michigan. He shows up on the rosters around the early 90s. |

Ah, yes. I was wondering the exact same thing at the time. It is a weird enough rule in the NFL but I had never heard of it being applied at the college level. I agree with you though, that it is the only possible explanation. |

It's all good, really. I was just noting that I do not like his hair. This is really important, obviously. This spares me from feeling bad about this if he ended up at Michigan. I am certain with Crean's influence, it will look even worse (I mean, look at the guy!). At least I only have to look at it like 2-3 times a year! /s |

My first thought upon viewing the big maize strip was that they are insidiously inching closer to all maize. Maybe the powers that be thought we'd never notice (not that they would care though)? That combined with the gloves gave me a shudder as I was suddenly reminded of some trends found in the BHGP B1G/Pro Combat line. |
5 years 39 weeks ago | awkward |
Yeah, there is something just horribly awkward about it, particularly from the back. Maybe my femaleness is making me notice it, but it really makes his ass look huge. Perhaps it is the virtual model making it look weird. But it really has that "mom jean" look from the back. New trend, perhaps? Also, that huge maize strip looks like trying to edge closer and closer to a full out maize design. Make it stop!

I'm thinking 5 games in 13 days might have something to do with it. If it was a team full of upperclassmen it might not have been an issue. I've been wondering if Burke would hit the schedule-induced wall at some point, especially with all the minutes he's been playing. After the OT win Wednesday night, my first thought was "they're going to have a tough time at Iowa" with about 2 days, one of those traveling. To me everyone just looked fatigued, slow, lost, out of sync, etc. This is why the B1G is tough. Not the end of the world though, as tough as that was to watch. Looks like growing pains. They'll get used to it and get better. |
6 years 16 weeks ago | not money only |
It wasn't just about money though. According to Bacon's book none of RRs assistance at M had contracts. Casteel staying at WVU offered him more money, job security in the form of a 2 year contract, and allowed him to keep his family in WV where they were comfortable. All of this happened due to the fact that WVU decided to hire Bill Stewart from RRs previous staff. So, yes M definitely needed to start forking over more cash for assistants but some contracts would have helped. |

I had serious abdominal fatigue from laughing so hard. Too bad they didn't have a few more or the whole team for that matter. Kovacs reminds me of the little kid in Christmas Story in the pink bunny suit. So awesome. |

Last week the Michigan Insider guys hit this pretty hard. They played clips of Borges from, I believe, the coach's radio show in which he completely owns that play call. The podcasts from 10/20 include several segments where they replay some of his comments. Among other things, he acknowledged that as being not the right call for that particular situation and fully took responsibilty, which was kind of amazing to hear. Hope this helps! |
6 years 33 weeks ago | right on |
I couldn't agree more. My first thought when I saw this post was "and this is important because...?". If this were track and not football, I would get it. However, we know Denard has way more going for him than just speed, which in itself is still fantastic. |

The best way to watch games outside of Ann Arbor is with local alums. I lived in Boston from 2003-2010. The BTN didn't exist when I first got there but also took awhile to get it in our cable package once it did. The local alumni club bars were some of the best memories I have watching games there. My experience watching the 2008 Wisconsin game, for example, will always live on in my memories. Going crazy, jumping around and hugging total strangers after such a depressing start still makes me smile. |

Speaking from personal experience and 7 years of marriage, if your soon-to-be spouse has stuck with you through the past 4 years of Michigan football, you guys can handle anything! And, unlike my idiotic friends who like to schedule weddings in the fall-on Saturdays no less!-all of your sports-loving friends will applaud you for scheduling yours in the "dead period" of sports when there is nothing else to pay attention to. |

I just discovered the same thing this morning. I started catching up on this week's shows today via the downloaded podcasts. I quickly found myself clamoring to skip over portions out of habit to restore sanity, only to remember he was on all of them. Man, he is so grating, like a stupid and whiney high school boy. And unfortunately I had it on while running in hot and humid weather. The combo was enough to make me want to throw the ipod into a lake. Sam, do NOT go on vacation any more!!! |

for your first paragraph. Hearing something rational and potentially realistic like that gives me hope and has actually helped me step back from the ledge a little. The idea of not going backwards 20 years on offensive scheme is a positive thing in my mind. |
7 years 14 weeks ago | Wow |
So, I moved to Bloomington about 6 months ago. This pretty much sums up my feelings about the undergrads here. It's a perfect representation. Funny yet sad. |
7 years 14 weeks ago | yes |
I was thinking something similar. In particular I know the hockey guys utilize his services quite a bit so I can only imagine most other sports would to some extent. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | Bingo |
It makes me feel bad for anyone nice who might be considering the job. At this point I'm starting to think it might be easier for me if someone I thought was a jerk took the job so I wouldn't have to worry about feeling bad about him being eaten alive for potentially arbitrary reasons. Yes, I realize this is insane but it's what I've come to. Sad. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | I agree with this. As much |
I agree with this. As much as I would love to be proven wrong in a good way about someone, Hoke gives me the least amound of optimism of anyone. In addition to what you just indicated, based on what Brian cited in his comments about being closed-minded about spread offenses-"basketball on grass" if I recall- he would be the worst fit in terms of players currently on the roster. Based on one of DBs points for criteria he mentioned in the presser-having someone who can adapt to the talent on the team-I just can't see how Hoke is anything other than a decided non-option. |
7 years 15 weeks ago | These are all good questions/ points |
regarding the Sweatervest. Another thing that struck me when he was first hired is that he took the very thing that was lacking with Cooper (and ultimately got him fired)-inability to beat Michigan and, to some extent, downplaying the rivalry-and embraced it. He put the M/OSU rivalry to the forefrunt and basically made it a rallying point amongst members of the fanbase. To me this was huge in terms of the way the local/regional fans initially received him. Obviously he secured that long term by winning but having that initial support probably helped. Indeed had he not backed that up by winning we would not be talking about him now. As much as I supported RR I noticed he liked to put our big rivalries in one category (ND, MSU, OSU) as though they were pretty much the same. While I don't see that as being ultimately bad, I think having an obvious appreciation for the specifics of each of those or at least acknowledging that publicly may have squashed some of the perception that he didn't understand Michigan or doesn't get the rivalry etc. |

This also reminds me of PSA test to help diagnose prostate cancer. Like you said, there are so many protein markers like this that could be identified based on cell type that it seems like it is only a matter of time before more of these tests get developed and used routinely. |

I don't know how I feel about deep fried kittens but +1 for that amazing image I will take with me the rest of the season. But yeah, his smile is something very close to that but with dilithium sprinkles on top. |
7 years 29 weeks ago | Yeah, I don't mind so much |
Maybe it's because I lived in Boston for most of the Millen/Lions debacle. That whole era didn't really exist for me as I turned a blind eye to it and watched the Patriots instead. I really don't mind his announcing for Michigan games, especially compared to most of the yahoos we're usually hearing. But I do admit I might have the same visceral reaction to his announcing as a lot of people on this board (also heard the WTKA guys complaining about it this morning) had I been living in Michigan for the last decade. |
7 years 29 weeks ago | currently raining |
It is currently raining (12:30) but based on radar it looks like the front will be passed by kickoff or shortly thereafter. Stupid Bloomingon. I moved here about 2.5 months ago for my husband's post-doc job and I can count on one hand the number of times it has actually rained since I've been here. Eveything has been brown for at least the last month. The one time I would have liked a dry day the rain comes. |
7 years 30 weeks ago | that, and the sudden rise in |
that, and the sudden rise in popularity of a certain player outside of the immediate fanbase would no doubt draw attention to the issue. I think it is hilarious and sad though that it took Compliance about as long to figure this out as practice/QC-gate. |
7 years 31 weeks ago | agreed |
For anyone to pretend they didn't know our defense would be a work in progress this year must have been living under a rock. When you think about all the issues between T-Wolf's injury to attrition plus already being thin at some positions I can't see why anyone is surprised. Not a huge mystery there. I have to say I was pretty fatalistic just prior to the season starting (my husband has had to talk me off the ledge a few times) and have been a little surprised that it hasn't been worse than it is right now, especially after combing the UFRs for the first 2 games. |
7 years 31 weeks ago | yes |
Yeah, I was just sitting here listening to all the press stuff and had the exact same thought. I will never forget the demeanor of the team after that Ball State game, especially Woodley, like they knew they almost let one get away; the disappointment was palpable. I have faith that this team knows that too and that the coaching staff will use this, as you say, to teach, motivate, and continue to build team chemistry. |
7 years 32 weeks ago | That's really funny. |
I caught that as well and thought I was losing it. That would certainly be really cool if he was 6'3". He doesn't seem to be having any trouble at 6'0" though. |
7 years 33 weeks ago | I was just waiting for that |
I was just waiting for that one. |
7 years 36 weeks ago | I've often wondered about |
I've often wondered about this too. RR has always seemed to be very realistic about how the team is doing, and I've always appreciated that to some extent. I too have noticed that compared to, say, 2 years ago he has gotten progressively more positive leading up to the start of the season. I do have to think that his expectations have to be much higher (obviously!) and that this will be really motivating. At least that is my positive take on it. I'm very good at being negative though so I'm just going to stop there on that happy thought. |
7 years 36 weeks ago | self-serving |
This T.H. guy makes my blood boil. Change is a part of life and it sounds like he is not willing to accept that. While we can quibble over all the details (basketball or football), the fact is that letter indicates a spirit of spite and bitterness instead of a sincere desire to support Michigan and be willing to support through difficult times. I do like RRs philosophy of deserving to win rather than expecting to win and I should definitely think this guy falls into the latter category. He comes off as completely self-serving, which is sad. I don't think this kind of attitude will do anything to help either program move forward. |
7 years 36 weeks ago | agree |
While I don't care about points, the fact that I am an e-introvert means the new system will decrease my incentive for participation in the way of voting. While I am an avid reader and enjoy it very much, I don't tend to carry or accrue lots of points at any time and a bit of the community aspect that I appreciate will be less accessible to others like myself. |
7 years 36 weeks ago | clever |
I love the cleverness and nerd appeal of these. I wish I lived closer to AA so they could be better appreciated instead of the puzzled looks I usually get. In any case, there is always a special place in my heart for slot ninjas so really appreciate those ones. Thanks for sharing your talents! |

I applaud your efforts. Perhaps persistant bugging could do the trick eventually? Next time I am in town, since I will invariably end up in that store, I will definitely remember to mention that as well. The MgoWomen must unite on this I think. But, yeah, the frumpy looking midsection has got to go! |
7 years 37 weeks ago | Ladies? |
When you say "Ladies and Gentlemen", do you really mean ladies? I am a faithful mgoshirt purchaser who just happens to be female. I am really tired of wearing ill-fitting men's shirts and having to sacrifice how I look in order to wear cool shirts-not that it isn't a worthy cause and all. But since this is America I want to have it all! I realize this is a bit of a rant but just thought I would throw that out there. If there is one thing (and really there is only one thing) I miss about Rich Robots it is the female sizing options. #2 is the best. The eyebrows make it. |

The other night I had a dream that Denard was spending all his time doing pole vault instead of football and wouldn't be returning this fall. Details are really foggy at this point but I know woke up thinking there was something seriously wrong with me. There probably is but I think I am also obssessed with M football. This is certainly not the only one of these I've had of late but thankfully I usually forget dreams pretty quickly. The husband just laughs. |

7 years 51 weeks ago | Glad to see this |
I have to say this really opened my eyes. I'm glad to see a lot of others appreciated it as well. I think it also shows how ignorant the general public still is about mental health issues, especially in the sports world. It also shows the shallowness of most sports fans and those who work in this industry. There is so much stigma toward people that either have a defined illness or just think outside the box a little. I'm glad Ricky shared his story so honestly and I hope a lot of people can benefit from it. |

People here in NE keep complaining about lack of pass rush. The Pats fans I've chatted with here at work seem pretty exited about the possibility of drafting him. That wouldn't be too bad for him. I'm terribly sorry to hear about your experience. Thank you for having the courage to share it. While I'm sure this is all pretty funny to the OP and others, as a "ginger" myself (I detest that term) and having dealt with a lot of the same ridicule growing up it really makes me sad to see this kind of stuff on this board, which I normally have a lot of respect for. I realize I'm inviting more abuse by replying but I'm not concerned about that. This is all pretty immature and likely demeaning and insulting to a large proportion of people who read this blog. |

8 years 30 weeks ago | yes |

8 years 31 weeks ago | sound quality vs. volume |
Despite the idea floating around, decreasing sound quality in order to increase volume won't help much. Back in my day (mid to late 90s) we were taught that better precision, intonation, breath support (all things that contribute to overall sound quality), not just volume, would give you a "wall of sound" and better overall effect. This is pretty standard marching band stuff. High level of musicianship can coexist with a big sound. Also, I haven't noticed having trouble hearing them when they are on field. If you ever watch postgame when the stadium is mostly empty, it is quite different (in a good way!) from the muffled sound you get when they are in the stands. I've wondered over the years if the band should be down at field level. I realize there are logistical issues here but visiting bands are always at field level and the sound is fine. |

I am so there, and coming from Boston. Can't wait to be there. Thanks for this post! |

I never had an opportunity to go when I was a kid. My first game was as a freshman. So my first experience in Michigan Stadium was coming out of the tunnel in a marching band uniform. I don't think I would trade that for having the childhood experience. |

Back in 1994 I was down for the game that year and with MMB. As if losing wasn't bad enough, on our way out of town all of the MMB buses were pulled over on the highway and received speeding tickets. The officer actually claimed the buses were going 66 in a 65 area (or whatever the speed limit was at the time, can't quite remember). Needless to say, being a naive freshman, and my first time in Columbus, the local police left quite an impression on me. |

The one in Cambridge is now in Porter Square. It's the Tavern, which seems slightly better than the Harvard Sq one last year. |
