A little advice: picking up girls at Southland can be tricky. You want to have your mom drop you off at the Hudson's furniture receiving area, this is the least visible part of the mall. You will be in the least female oriented part of the mall, which is a good way to slowly make your presence felt. Head south towards woodworths stopping to "ticlkle the ivories" at the wirlitzer store. This is directly across the concourse from the Z Cavarici and chess King, where many choice girls hang out. Play it cool and walk slowly over to Structure, which has professional but stylish men's clothes, perfect to let the ladies know you are not all work and no play. Proceed to Foot Locker and see if they have any of the fresh White Sox or Atlanta Falcons gear, also consider a Starter brand Raiders coat. This will establish you as having some street cred. Next, stride right past KayBee toys, do not go in and look at Legos. Go to Sam Goody and hit the listening station, maybe pick up a cassingle, may I suggest some gangster rap like Rob Base or Young MC (be sure to pocket this so your parents don't see). By now you are at the main fountain where all the girls are. Be sure to stay on the perimeter to get a good view of the selection. You need to abandon your instinct and resis talking to them. As you are near the theater, one you talk to might have a ticket and need to hurry off, thus putting you too far out there. Just wait and watch. A typical movie like Die Hard 2 or Days of Thunder lasts about 90 minutes, so you will need to be comfortable. Once you are sure which girls are your prey and which ones are movie goers and waiting for a ride, you wil be hungry. Go over to Olga's, which is back past Chess King. Get 3 original Olga's, a curly fry and the biggest orange shake they have. Eat it all. Look at the time and slink back through Hudson's, slowing down to ogle the mannequins in bras. Get in mom's car and go home. Repeat every weekend for 5 years.

michigan's offense, as dynamic as it can be, is too inconsistent and struggles to get an easy basket to slow down inevitable runs. dumping the ball to an isolated, stationary guy down low can lead to a shot pretty easily while having a ball handler dribble into the lane, get collapsed on by all defenders has a lot more trouble getting a shot or clear pass. i was hoping morgan might at least get a few touches like this, just for honest-keeping.

11 days after the Freeh report was issued, the NCAA levelled Penn State with historically drastic sanctions. it took 14 months for the NCAA to investigate and punish Michigan for stretching. i am not saying that the punishment was undue or that the Freeh report is wrong, but that the timeline does seem to support a bit of a rush to judgment by the NCAA who did not conduct their own investigation or report.
Aug. 30, 2009 , Michigan announces it is investigating allegations made by former players that they violated NCAA rules by practicing more than the allotted 20 hours per week.
Feb. 23, 2010 An NCAA investigation reveals five potential major rules violations concerning in- and out-of-season practice time, including one that Rodriguez “failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the football program and failed to adequately monitor” his quality-control staff.
Nov. 4, 2010 In a reduction of its original charge, the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions found that Rodriguez failed to monitor his football program, but not that he failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance. Michigan had earlier agreed with NCAA findings that four major rules violations had occurred within the football program.

i usually trust Magnus tracking at http://touchthebanner.blogspot.com/
the 16 number comes from guys who have no eligility left (and includes gardner). it does not include 5 redshirt juniors who may or may not be asked back for a 5th year (one of which is jake ryan, who i assume gets asked back, the others are Paskorz, Ash, Wilkins and Furman). there will likely be a few more leave-earlies, defections, injuries, disciplines, dropouts, etc. (hope not) before the number of schollies is final.
the low numbers are because there are 27 commits this year and 25 from the previous year, which are two pretty big classes. that means that there are only 33 spots for seniors and juniors.

uniforms - not too bad, actually. i can stand more variations in basketball than football as there are nearly 3 times as many games a year, so a bad uni is only 3% of your games, not 7.5. also, there is something in the DNA of the basketball programs that favors persistant tweaking, whereas in football we are referring to each team as #134 or something.
vitale - not as bad as he was about 10 years ago. his throat is catching up with him. love tirico though.
burke - i wonder if starting more sets without the ball in his hands would help him get more opportunities and get more other guys involved. since he usually has the best defender on him, it might be a good idea to get that guy lost in the shuffle of screens and cuts rather than to just be sitting there waiting at timeline to push the offense too far out.
wisc and msu - it would not surprise me to see both mcgary and morgan on the court at the same time.

9 game conference schedule with no crossovers (MSU in the east) gets michigan vs the west once every 3 years and every 6 years at the opponent stadium.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||80 mile round trip in LA||
must take about 7 hours.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||i am not sure that a protected crossover is a good idea||
with the current 8 conference games. you have 6 inter division then 2 crossovers for 7 teams meaning that if you protected a crossover you would have 1 game for the other 6 teams meaning you only play each team once in 6 years, unless you make it to the title.
if you go to 9 games, you have your 6 inter division then 3 crossovers for 7 teams, 2 crossovers for 6 teams with the protected crossover, meaning that you play the other teams once every 3 years.
i don't think that the western schools are going to want the3 largest fan bases coming to their stadiums only every 12 years.
all of this leads me to say that MSU gets stuck in the east and there are no protected crossovers. it gets weird with 7 teams for 3 games, but a bunch of engineers can figure that out.

the B1G already is identified as a midwest conference that plays and recruits mostly within the midwest. looking at three teams playing ND every year and, outside OSU, everyone else playing MAC teams, for the most part (MSU Boise, PSU UVa, Neb UCLA), it is not hard to disagree with that.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||other side of the coin||
12 games, 10 conference games, half of which are road games, you are left with 7 home games max per year. no more years of 8 home games and some years with 6 if they do any home and home series. ticket prices will probably go up to support this.

scheduling future pre-season opponents (2012 was pretty bad). if they bring in oregon and texas and florida, i can rationalize bigger tickets. i am sure michigan will follow further, but will expect us to pay more for the "event-i-ness" of the game, a la Air Force or some contrived pre-game event.
again, this is not a sudden death-knell but a signal of further future erosion. the conferece dilutes itself for more tv gain, then the universities turn around and ask for more money for an equal or lesser product so that they can throw more money into the hole of college athletics arms races.

it is sort of a Civil War factoid that Sherman turned left in Savannah (which is North) on christmas and largely went into the high country to the Carolinas rather than along the coast. he was aiming to defeat Johnston's army in North Carolina and link up with Grant in Virginia if necessary. Most of the cities on the coast were evacuated by then, leaving only freed starving slaves. The entire city of Columbia SC was still holding out and was stocked mostly with liquor and cotton bale barricades. it was put to the torch after surrendering, either by celebrating troops, freed slaves or retreating confederates.

i think that we all get riled up here because we see something at the top of the page that is admittedly ugly and think of cal's logo or UCLA or something, but this is a pretty amazingly complex organziation that needs to have some sort of unifying graphical element, and while i personally think that the wierd U shape with the C gradient is a swing and miss, it is not like the original thing they are covering up was really inventive. there is a difference between a wordmark, a logo and a seal. this logo needs to work on a million different applications and sizes and colors to act as a shorthand, visual umbrella for the organization.

and as much as traditional sports fans that we are pine for the days of the Norris Division and the Campbell conference in hockey, it took no time at all for a nationwide flip out about who goes into which divisions and does not seem to be getting better.
bottom line - nothing makes sense, it never really has, it just takes time for your brain to adapt to something that makes the same amount of non-sense that is a bit different now and adding teams and giving them another chance is not going to make your brain feel better, so can we just stop with the "division names are all wrong - blargh!" because your job as a fan is to understand the above comment and move along without pissing each other off too badly.

|3 years 32 weeks ago||FYI||
cinci will be coached in the interim by a familiar name: DL coach Steve Stripling. Roy Manning coaches RBs there as well. i will be rooting for them hoping a sort of michigan guy gets a shot somewhere.
"Stripling coached the defensive line at Michigan from 2005-07. He worked directly with defensive end LaMarr Woodley, a 2006 All-American who won the Lombardi Award and Ted Hendricks Trophy. Woodley also was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Lineman of the Year in 2006. Tackle Alan Branch also earned All-Big Ten first team and All-America second team accolades under Stripling.
The 2006 Wolverines led the nation in rush defense, surrendering just 43.3 yards per game on the ground. Stripling was a part of Michigan teams that played in the Alamo Bowl, Rose Bowl and Capital One Bowl.
Stripling's other Big Ten experience includes two seasons at Michigan State University (2003-04), four seasons at the University of Minnesota (1997-2000) and 13 seasons at Indiana University (1984-96). He was the defensive coordinator at Indiana in 1996."

about my outrage at conference expansion. conference expansion is just the most recent
college football, as a niche sport, has a different kind of fan than the NBA, baseball or NFL, its hard to say what it is, its more than dedication, but there is some sort of tribal allegiance that many of us share with our team that gives us the sensation of power or ownership - i know more about the history and meaning of this one little thing than most people know about their professions. we could be convined that we were different because we could go to an NFL game and feel it was different.
yes, the college football champion was most years arrived at by some suspect means and yes, there was more money to be made in all of these avenues and the people that inflated nascar to its highest ratings before moving on, and the people that pumped up the NHL to the sunbelt before moving on arrived and devised all sorts of ways to monetize us before they move on to the next place to advertise product. and when they are gone, what are we left with? ask nascar's plummeting viewership, high ticket prices and nonsense championship race. ask the NHL's die hard fans. ask me in five years when my home ticket package consists of directional michigan, random out west school, sparty, iowa, maryland and purdue and my PSL, the ultimate money grab, is double what it is now even though the team is raking in dough from cable subscribers that are a rapidly declining group.
well, it turns out that feeling of power or control that having and paying for season tickets and road trips and merchandise and bleeding maize and blue and not sleeping after 2011 iowa or getting in a playground fight with a spartan fan after desmond got tripped in the endzone because he did trip and the ground can't cause a fumble or willingly not sourcing a product for 7 years because i know that product's salesmen is a buckeye fan and doing this over and over for 40 years was an illusion all along and it hurts to see it gone forever because that is exactly how long i plan on being a michigan fan.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||why is wisconsin||
less a destination than lincoln Nebraska? seems they are both close to similar size metropolitan areas, Omaha (400k) and Milwaukee (600k). they both do well to get kids from talent rich states, although admittedly, Nebraska gets kids from huge growing texas and wisco gets them from ohio, illinois, which are decent talent-wise and they do well in florida. wisconsin ranks in the top 15-20 in terms of football and athletic spending and has a 20 year track record of success that gets the kind of alumni support most schools crave. they have built a program that knows what their strengths are, developing brawny farm kids in the trenches and scatter in some flyers at the edges and backs.
they really don't have more natural or structural impediments to success than michigan, nebraska or penn state, which might say more about how delusional michigan, nebraska and penn state fans are.

from B1G high schools that did not go to B1G schools:
'97 - #17 Druckenmiller, VT, from PA
'99 - #2 McNabb, Syr, from Illinois
'03 - #22 Grossman, Fla, from Indiana
'04 - #11 Roethlisburger (?), Miami (OH) from Ohio
'07 - #22 Quinn, ND from Ohio
'08 - #3 Matt Ryan, BC, from PA
if you include the new footprint, you can add
'03 - #7 Leftwich, Mar, from DC
'08 - #18 Flacco, Del from NJ
granted, it might not be the biggest list of stars, but if the article suggests that the B1G's problems are because there are not enough talented high school QBs in the geographical footprint, i think that this demonstrates that is not true.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||what is "produce?"||
from the sound of it, RU and MU are deeply in debt, so i assume the bulk of their ticket sales stays with them. their bowl payouts would get divided up, but those will be minimal. so the only uptick they can supply is in terms of value to the television network and the extra added commmercial cost it can demand from advertisers.
if michigan went from being a 1/12 sharehold to a 1/14, they are taking less of a share and therefore the pot has to grow for them to recapture their previous revenue. even so, i think it will work out financially, or else the DBs of the conference would not have been ok with it.
do people in the bronx buy a lot of nitrogen entrainment supplements?
|3 years 35 weeks ago||the point about extra shares is a good one||
currently, michigan gets 1/12 of the B1G pie, 8.3%. with new members, that goes to 1/14 or 7.1%. for michigan to get back to the 8.3%, the revenues have to grow by 16.8% since you have to raise 1.2% for all 14 teams now.
essentially, michigan just too a pay cut of 15% from the conference for the forseeable future to rescue maryland and rutgers.
this is how my brain works, business folks, speak up.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||lol at your mgopoints, by the way||
a few things:
1) the big ten conference is not a corporation, and while it needs to be proactive to create the best climate for its members, it also is one of the pillars of college football. college football would not move on to something like playoffs or whatever without the inclusion of the big ten. i would not have minded if the conference had chosen to use some of its might to stay above the fray, rather than dilute the brand. what is the point of being Goliath if the conference has the power to determine its own amibtions, if that is to get more tvs than another guy by changing the fundamental nature of what an althetic conference is, then i guess that is what it is.
2) i think it is highly unlikely that state politics in Virginia or North Carolina will allow those state's football programs to separate, since that is what brought them together in the first place.
3) personally, i am ashamed of the big ten with this. every system that college football has ever had or will ever have is imperfect, that is just the nature of sports. this whole idea that there is some simple tournament solution that will make everyone happy is ridiculous. they are chasing piles of cash and when you have your piles of cash, then what? what happens when you have monetized every aspect of your operation? the conference, whatever that is anymore, is not going to say, we have our pile of cash, let's sit pat. they are going to find new piles and most of those piles are in our pockets. and the one thing that i even care about any of this for, the experience of going to a game with my family and singing as loud as a i can when things go well and crying as hard as a can when they don't has not benefitted from this in the least.
4) i am not a nascar fan, but this whole college football goldrush for marketing seems to reek of what happened to them. there is a niche sport, quaint, cozy, well loved by milions of dedicated fans - something that CEOs consider under-utilized. so they get their hands into it, try to broaden the appeal, try to make the championship more exciting, polish it up with cell phones instead of cigarettes, build huge facilities around the country with luxury boxes and charge insane new psls and ticket prices. after that balloon is puffed up and the casual fans wander to the next casual thing, and tv ratings fall apart and advertisers look elsewhere, the people left holding the bag are the ones that were there in the beginning, although now they are paying three times as much for a worse product. this is what this is and i pity the people who will never know the joy of piling into the car to drive to west lafayette for a simple fall day just because you can and i regret that i may never be able to do that again.
