I swam competitively, too, up through high school. Everyone on my team swam fly in practice. Not every practice, and not when we were at the point where training was focused on athletes' specific events, but certainly during the build parts of the training block. Some people swam it like crap, but they swam it.
My wife swam back and free at Michigan. I asked her about it, and she said "Not much. Maybe twice a week for IM sets."

I mean, I'm kinda on your side here, but this:
"Many freesylers literally never even learned how to swim butterfly and would flounder around like breaching whales if you asked them to try."
What?! That might be the most insane comment I've seen on the MGoBoard. Every competitive swimmer past the age of 8 or so learns how to swim fly and swims fly in practice. They may not be good at it, they may not compete in it, but everyone learns and swims it. Let's not be so dramatic.

Compare it to track. The swimming 100 is like the track 400. 200 -> 800. Ledecky has won gold in the 200 and 400, huge favorite for the 800, and would win the 1500 if it was swum here (side note: why is it not? no idea...its swum at other high-level international meets). For track, that would be like winning in the 800, mile, 2-mile, and 5k (not a perfect interpolation), plus medalling in the 4x400. That would be incredible for a track athlete!
|2 weeks 10 hours ago||Yeah, sure, but those are the||
Yeah, sure, but those are the two absolute best athletes in swimming and track. Phelps is the greatest olympian ever. Not really comparable.
Tennis players make a lot at the top, but (and I can't remember the exact ranking) somewhere between the top 30-60, they go from making enough to live to needing another job or supplemental income. USA swimmers get a stipend from the governing body. If they are top-16 in the nation and make appearances at certain meets, they can get up to $3000 a month. That's $36,000 a year. If you're up there at the top, sponsorships and things get you much more. That does not compare the the number of people and salary in the big four sports.
Minimum salary for the big four is all around half a million dollars. They are leagues apart.

|25 weeks 6 days ago||HS Swimming Dual Meet Saline vs Milan||
My junior year in HS, we were traveling to our bitter rivals (at the time) Milan. They had just opened a brand new school complete with a very nice pool.
On paper, the teams were quite evenly matched. It was going to be a tough fight, and proved to be for over half the meet.
I had been training very hard that year but wasn't seeing results in competition. It changed that night.
Near the halfway point in the meet, we swim the 200 Free Relay. On the B relay, I swim my fastest time and, with great times from the others, we beat their B relay, giving us a slight points lead. By the second-to-last event, 100 Breaststroke, we were again behind. But this event was my primary, and I was fired up.
My biggest rival in the event was Milan's best breaststroker. His times were about a second and a half faster than mine. He was in lane 4, I in lane 3, and our best in lane 5. I took it out at the same pace as the other two; we all touched the wall at 50 yards about the same. That next length, me and my teammate pushed a bit ahead of the Milan guy. While pulling out on that last turn, I see me and my teammate neck and neck while our opponent was almost a body-length behind. We blast toward the finish, teammate winning and myself taking second with a huge PR. Nothing beats the rush I felt when I finished at that wall for second, and saw my time on the board.
Those two events were upsets and provided the winning margin in the meet. I was named MVP for the meet and swam great the rest of the season.

My buddy and I stayed in Youngstown, OH Friday night and drove in Saturday morning. We talked with Desmond Morgan's dad (and uncle? not sure) at a McDonalds somewhere in Pennsylvania that morning. Seemed like a cool guy!
The stadium was set up in the middle of farm fields at the far end of campus. We walked through campus all the way down to the Lion Shrine, which was pretty sweet. Got some selfies with the Lion. Most PSU fans were good to us (including a fair amount of people shouting "Welcome!" as we walked by), but there was that one drunk sorority girl that stuck a thumbs-down in my face. Students gonna student.
The campus buildings were mostly architecturally similar. Most were red brick with aluminum accents, but there were some buildings with a tan brick. Campus was pretty nice!
Agree with the stadium: outside and concourse were ugly as hell. Inside its great. The white out was cool for the first quarter before they all got demoralized. "Those fans" exist at Penn State as well...they sat right behind us and constantly complained about Hack not throwing the ball away, or their persistance with trying the run, calling the targeting on Rudock fair game ("LET THEM PLAY FOOTBALL!"), but then yelling about the refs not throwing a flag when Hack got owned by Taco. They left early.
Speaking of leaving early, the avalanche began after we recovered the fumbled punt.
Bars were very crowded, but PSU fans there were great. They praised Jake Rudock and how he destroyed them through the air. Grumbling about Franklin were present, though a few said he needed more time to get his players in.
Overall great trip! Would love to come again. Next year, Iowa.

Agreed. Talking with my (almost) PT girlfriend and me looking at it like an engineer, we came up with the same conclusion. Shin is being placed into bending. Lower part is braced by the tape, but the energy has to be accounted for somewhere, so the excess causes a break.
When this happens, being an "emergency" loading and not normal stress, you would want to move the point of failure to somewhere less critical in a part. With a leg, you would want the ankle to break, not the leg obviously.
In addition, the gf says there is no evidence that ankle taping prevents ankle injuries besides maybe a psychological effect.
Conclusion: taping needs to be reviewed and modified, but that's probably unlikely to happen.

Thanks to you, Slanty is now the 4th highest result as well. Way to go Brian.

Yeah but in another question he says the magic words! Says we will stick to what we do best, which is running the football, and throwing in counter-punches. If we do that we're golden.

Whatever happened to Devin Smith? We haven't seen him since that first game...though maybe that is for the best.

Miles chewing grass scene really did it for me. Cuppycup.

Wait-I didn't read the part in parens. Fail.

That would be the fault of one Scott Boerma. Screw real-time evaluation. It's 4th down? Play Temptation!
Personally, I'm saddened that the band is now attempting to cover up the sound of the student section on that last "YOU SUCK" by playing an extra phrase.

My friend caved to his fiancee's wishes and is getting married the day of the Nebraska game. I hope she enjoys it when everyone is huddled around a tv during the reception!

People ask this question every week. Brian is picking non-traditional scores. Fits with his personality.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||A meaningless TD and 2pt||
A meaningless TD and 2pt conversion early when Illinois still thinks its in the game, then a field goal.

Of course. The exceptions that prove the rule.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Not surprising||
Insulting your customer is something you don't want to do if you want to keep your job.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Perhaps because, though||
Perhaps because, though sparingly used, the passes were great drive extenders. Also, we had a lot of runs go nowhere.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||I still cannot understand why||
I still cannot understand why DeAnthony Arnett isn't playing. Is it retribution for his tweets? It can't be that he's not as good as the guys they are playing. Dude had 24 catches averaging 10 apiece last year. He can catch the ball, unlike all of Sparty's other receivers.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||This really bodes well for||
This really bodes well for next year having Taylor a year of experience when JT Floyd is gone. With Countess and Taylor in the secondary, the only real step back will be not having Kovacs. Man, we're gonna miss that guy.

|3 years 45 weeks ago||I'd love a noon game. Why||
I'd love a noon game.
Why were the AF and UMass games at 3:30 anyway? Apparently 3:30 isn't indicative of the matchup. See last year: our game with Sparty was at noon.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Well, I say you don't change||
Well, I say you don't change anything at first. But Illinois is defnitely not Minny or Indy...they are worse. You put in the guys that need more experience with the starters once you're up a few scores and see what works.

Dude is 160 pounds. Don't want him to get murdered. You see what happened to Denard a few years ago?
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Illinois game would be a good||
Illinois game would be a good test for that. Wait till we're up a bunch and then put him in, in case he makes a big mistake.
Honestly I think the problem is more the fault of our crappy punt return squad.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||I'd love to see some pass||
I'd love to see some pass attempts from Bellomy, even if they are screens.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||While that's true, the second||
While that's true, the second thing should be the ability to make a return. And that's not on Gallon (or Fleet). Our punt return squad blows. On one of those punts yesterday, I'm pretty sure there were 5 black jerseys gunning ahead of the white jerseys straight for Gallon.
As long as we're winning, it's not a big deal, but getting 5-10 yards a punt would make an impact in the long run.

Yikes. No clock burning here, and if they punt it might be over...
Come on IU.

|3 years 46 weeks ago||At first I thought you were||
At first I thought you were talking about checks at the line, ie audibles. I was going to say, I've seen about as many Denard checks as Denard throwaways.
I doubt we'll see a lot of check downs. Even though you might think that would be a staple of a West Coast offense, with Denard's running capability, that should be the check down. Also, with Denard's struggles with throwing to the defense in the face of pressure, I would think the RB will most likely be blocking instead of running a check down route.

This is simply amazing...I had no idea AOL still existed!
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Seriously.||
As a reporter, even a beat guy, you would think a little critical thinking could come up with a better question. They taught that in high school at least.
Instead of "Durr, is it good that Denard throws interceptions?", how about "How can you coach Denard to be better under pressure?" or something. I'm sure we could come up with a hundred questions that are better than that.

|3 years 48 weeks ago||He is a better passer||
The thing is, he looked fine when he had time to throw. When he had ND in his face, instead of taking a sack or chucking the ball out of bounds, he threw it downfield.
Hopefully during practice these two weeks Hoke will instruct the O line not to block and have Denard deal with all the pressure. He's got to get that out of his head. Stop trying to make plays like that.

Today. I'm excited. This is super off-topic.
Um, so yeah, it was 80 points for the Cowboy Classic uni. I paid, and I haven't used it at all. In fact, I haven't used any of the uniforms except once in a while I'll put the helmet numbers on. Classic uniform all the way.
