1. If I'm in my high school…

1. If I'm in my high school mind, it's hockey. In my 38 year old mind, it's golf.

2. For hockey, likely Wisconsin or Minnesota. For golf, Arizona State.

3. Hockey was my sport of choice growing up, and being a midwest kid I'd look to the reasonably successful midwest schools in fun cities. However, I'm much more of a golfer these days, and if I'm an 18 year old 5* golfer, that likely means I have a pretty good shot at a reasonably successful and long professional career without the physical toll of contact sports. Also in that scenario, I'm choosing Arizona State because, again, I'm theoretically 18 and what 18 year old wouldn't want to go there?

I'm pretty sure this is…

I'm pretty sure this is discussing from the Michigan side of things. Anaheim having an established 1C in Zegras (plus McTavish/Strome/Henrique behind him) means they would have had much less reason to sign Adam right away. Columbus has a gaping hole at 1C (and 2C as well, as Jenner is really more of a 3C in my opinion, and their other centers are all bad), meaning Adam is looking at potentially slotting in with Gaudreau and/or Laine right away if he can make the jump to the NHL with reasonable success.

Levshunov is Belarussian,…

Levshunov is Belarussian, and Vermont does have 3 Russian-adjacent players on their team already (one each from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Latvia) which could certainly help with transition if he's as limited with English as people seem to think. Wonder if that's a significant factor, as there aren't too many players in the NCAA from that part of the world. Per Elite Prospects, there were a total of 18 last year across all of DI (1 Belarus, 1 Kazakhstan, 7 Russia, 9 Latvia).

Don't even need a Miata for…

Don't even need a Miata for that. I've got a Honda CR-Z with a 6-speed - why they made a hybrid with 3 pedals is beyond me. It's got all of 120hp (same as the NA Miata), struggles to continue accelerating once you hit 70mph, and is FWD. Yet, when I find myself on some mountain roads in Oregon, it's surprisingly fun to pretend I'm driving fast.

I'm pretty sure he's…

I'm pretty sure he's referencing the Quinnipiac regional final, which was in Allentown, Michigan scored 33 seconds into the game, and they were clearly controlling the play for the first 40 minutes.

You're probably thinking of the Denver FF game in Boston, where Michigan played like they were still scared about what happened in the 3rd period against Quinnipiac.

Sounds like someone who hasn…

Sounds like someone who hasn't witnessed OSU have a plug-and-play option at QB ready for the last, uh 20 years?

I live in Oregon, where vote…

I live in Oregon, where vote-by-mail has been exclusively used since 1995; you can vote in person, but very few people actually do this. Washington, Hawaii, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado also do this. Not one of these states has ever had any substantive finding of election fraud with the vote-by-mail system. Is it perfect? Maybe not for everyone, but until Election Day is a federal holiday with guaranteed poll access for everyone, it's significantly better than only being allowed to vote in person on one day in early November.

People who do not trust the results of elections are effectively claiming that there is election fraud happening. Distrust in the results is not a reason to think there's mail ballot fraud (or any other form of election fraud). We do not, in any way, have to shore up elections to appease people who do not trust the system; people who do not trust the outcome of elections only do so when their candidate loses.

Again, if you have actual verifiable sources of any type of election fraud happening, I'm all ears. At least 63 court cases from the 2020 election found nothing.

If you're suggesting that…

If you're suggesting that any form of mail-in voting in the US has been proven fraudulent, please provide sources.

Probably good that McKay won…

Probably good that McKay won the award last year, since it had been 21 years since a goalie won, otherwise they'd be all-in on Levi to break that streak.

Unfortunately, 89 points is the record for defensemen, which is pretty solidly out of reach, similar to Hrkac's record of 116 in a season. It's just a different game than the 70s/80s.

Since 2000, the best is Matt Carle's 53 points in 05-06. Assuming Hughes stays healthy, I think there's a completely reasonable chance he can hit that. Using Quinn as the nearest comparable, he went from 0.78 PPG as a freshman to 1.03 as a sophomore. Luke was already at 0.95 last year in 41 games without significant top-line PP contributions, 53 points in 41 games is 1.29.

Mel is 63 years old. He's…

Mel is 63 years old. He's not going to 'grow from the experience' like he's a 22 year old fresh out of college who made a mistake at his job due to inexperience. He's been a head coach for 11 seasons between MTU and UM, and was an assistant coach for 29 years before that. 40 years in the coaching industry should be plenty enough experience to know you don't treat your players like shit and you don't let people in your organization treat women like shit.

FYI, it was actually the 80s…

FYI, it was actually the 80s Oilers who had 3 straight most recently, by a year over those Islanders (Edmonton lost to the Isles in 83 before winning in 84 [Islanders] & 85 [Flyers]).

As for the Gibson/Montoya debate, I'd disagree. I'd take a senior Montoya in 05-06 over a sophomore Gibson in 12-13. Montoya would have a lot of motivation to play well - he would have been playing for a FA contract, as Lundqvist hit the ground running in 05-06 and the Rangers job wasn't available. Montoya put up .907 that year in the AHL, and improved to .932 in the playoffs. The roster in 05-06 was also vastly better than the 12-13 team, counting stats be damned for the latter. That was just not a good team regardless of the goalie.

That Maine line had the most…

That Maine line had the most combined points, but the most goals by a college line was the Tony Hrkac, Bob Joyce, and Steve Johnson line from North Dakota (124 to Maine's 103). Hrkac played a while in the NHL but was never a star, Joyce had a couple seasons before heading to Europe. Only Ed Belfour from that ND team actually starred in the NHL.

Oh joy, more satellites that…

Oh joy, more satellites that will continue to ruin stargazing.

Appreciate it - I won't…

Appreciate it - I won't pretend to be in tune with that stuff, but if he's an off-ice headache, then I'd also be leery to add that kind of player to a team that will be dressing freshmen as half the roster.

There are at least 5…

There are at least 5 freshmen forwards basically guaranteed to be in the lineup - Fantilli, Nazar, McGroarty, Hallum, and Haskins. I'd love to see Michigan take a swing on Ture Linden from RPI and Ty Smilanic from Quinnipiac in the transfer market, but it's going to be hard to guarantee ice time to those guys.

The defense for next year kinda scares me. Hughes is going to be a Hobey favorite, and Truscott is solid, but after that we're on the Edwards/Pehrson old guys who are okay, two freshmen who were highly regarded previously but have been somewhat disappointing with the U-18s this year (Casey and Brzustewicz), and Adam Fantilli's older brother who is probably not an every-game guy.

Pete Maravich averaged 16.7…

Pete Maravich averaged 16.7 total FG makes per game over his college career. There's 0% chance that 13 of those were from even the older, shorter 19.75-foot 3-point line, especially as Maravich was known as being pretty great at driving to the basket (hence the 13.9 FTA/game). Would a 3-point line have inflated his stats even more? Sure, but not 13 PPG more.

The difference is how…

The difference is how quickly technology can accelerate as time goes on. It took humanity nearly 300000 years to go from the earliest humans to a functioning automobile. From there, it took 84 years to put a person on the moon. All it really takes is one planet being a few thousand years or so ahead on the timeline to be so far beyond our comprehension of possible technologies.

The counting stats have been…

The counting stats have been nice and all, but it's still hilarious to me that OSU has had the All-B1G QB for both the media and coaches every year since 2013, except 2015 when Connor Cook won it.

It's more because very few…

It's more because very few basketball or football players start college when they're 20. In hockey, that's pretty common with some schools, especially those who aren't successful at getting college-ready 18 year olds to commit.

So these players who start college are 20 are now are 23-24 year old juniors and seniors, and are thus grown-ass men playing against teenagers. Even if the teenagers are more skilled, they're at a very large disadvantage from a physcial development perspective.

Using a brace as a…

Using a brace as a replacement for a ligament is a bad idea, especially in a contact sport. See Dennis Dixon's ACL or RG3's LCL and ACL.

If bagmen were the biggest…

If bagmen were the biggest role in getting OSU, Bama, and Clemson to the top 3, why isn't Ole Miss in the top-10 every year at a minimum? It doesn't matter how much talent you have if you don't know how to use it.

How will NIL threaten the…

How will NIL threaten the Big 3? Michigan isn't in a position to offer more exposure and sponsorship opportunities than OSU, Bama, or Clemson. At best, it's probably equal. In which case success on the field is still a deciding factor for many athletes.

The Father Time one is equally unlikely. Sure, Saban is the best college football coach of all time, and whomever Alabama hires after him is almost assuredly a step down. But they're also in the incredible position of being able to hire nearly anyone they want outside of most NFL and maybe one or two NCAA head coaches, so to anticipate that the step down is large is just wishful thinking. Alabama is still a machine, and they're very likely to remain a machine post-Saban. Remember that everyone thought OSU would take a stumble when Meyer left, and it turns out Day just kept that train on the rails.

Quick note, he was the best…

Quick note, he was the best PPG defenseman in the NTDP. The brother we lost, Sasha Pastujov, led the program in points and PPG this year.

I used to use the FootJoy…

I used to use the FootJoy Hyperflex and loved them, but last year I used some of the stimulus check to order myself a custom pair of the FootJoy Pro SLs. They're fantastic, and also super fun colors.

1 - I treat my PW more as a…

1 - I treat my PW more as a 10-iron than anything. It's part of the same set that my 3-9 irons are, not the same as my wedges. I did recently move from a 52-58 setup to a 50-54-60, and I love it actually. My 50 I use from 110 down to 90 (depending on whether the good miss is long or short), 54 from about 75-100 (again, depending on short/long being the better miss). 60 is for anything inside of 75 since I can control it pretty well, and also of tremendous use on flop shots or whenever I find myself short-sided around the green. 54 is generally my go-to out of the sand, but I'll use the others sometimes on specific shots.

2 - That's what my 3 hybrid is for really. I hit it about 15 yards longer than my 3 iron, launch it much higher, and it's just way easier to hit consistently, so it nestles nicely between my 3 wood and 3 iron.

Not weird at all. I know…

Not weird at all. I know plenty of guys who are great golfers and are using 15-20 year old gear that looks like they bought it on a whim from an estate sale. If it works for you, it doesn't matter if you play a R flex or a XX flex. I'd actually prefer if fitters didn't tell you what shaft or club head you were using at any given time.

Driver - Cobra King F7, 9*, Mitsubishi Kuro Kage TiNi 60X
3W - TaylorMade RBZ2, 14.5*, Mitsubishi Fubuki K 80X
3H - Titleist 915H2, 21*, Aldila Rogue Black 85H Stiff
3-P - Mizuno MP53, KBS Tour S
50-54-60 - Mizuno S18 Blue, True Temper Dynamic Gold Wedge
Putter - Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Blade

Luckily for my club count I broke my 7 iron about a year and a half ago, so I'm no longer carrying one too many clubs. I've been too lazy to get it repaired, since I'd rather just invest in new irons since these are about 10 years old now. I hit everything else well enough that I'm in no rush to replace anything. I absolutely love my 8 year old 3 wood, can't see getting rid of that anytime soon. Maybe once I'm too old to use an 80X shaft anymore.

After moving to Oregon, I bought myself a ClicGear 3.5, and have absolutely loved it. I used to carry whenever possible, and it's such a relief to not have the wear and tear on my back that carrying used to do. Basically, don't try to be tough, nobody really cares whether you carry, walk with a push cart, or ride in a cart. I don't understand the old guys with the remote-controlled carts though...

It's things like this that…

It's things like this that make me really disinterested in following sports anymore. People in charge want to win so badly, or make money so badly, that they'll ignore or downplay serious moral and legal transgressions. Just in our own conference over the last 10 years, we've had no shortage of scandals come to light - Michigan, OSU, and MSU ignoring abuse by doctors, PSU and Iowa ignoring abuse by coaches.

Once, just one goddamn time, it would be nice to see a school put the health and safety of students, athletes, and children ahead of monetary gain or notches in the win column.

The results were made…

The results were made official after the race with Medina Spirit as the winner, the DQ came after that during drug testing. Kind of like how people have had to give up gold medals or other trophies for failing drug tests after race results were made official.

It's a half-joking response…

It's a half-joking response to the "You're next, Augusta" part of the OP. Yes, they can't move the course, but also on demographics alone, I doubt they even release a statement because it's a historically racist and sexist venue.

Augusta National GC is run…

Augusta National GC is run by old, rich, white men. They won't do anything about this.

First, that's what unions…

First, that's what unions are for, and should the courts decide that the NCAA must allow compensation to athletes above the current CoA, a NCAA Players Union is absolutely sure to follow. Second, if Rutgers only wants to offer $20k to their students while Michigan offers $40k, that's their choice (so long as neither party violates the terms of a theoretical CBA). They're choosing profit over competitiveness, just like professional teams who pay just enough to be over the salary floor while others pay up to the salary cap. Are players on the Miami Marlins being exploited because players on the New York Yankees make considerably more on average?

People that blame refs for…

People that blame refs for the outcomes of games are sore losers. Get out of here with that bullshit.

Sorry if my intention wasn't…

Sorry if my intention wasn't clear, what I meant by that was "coaches of amateurs," not trying to imply they are amateurs themselves.

Right, that's the point of…

Right, that's the point of my question. I'm in the boat that players should be able to earn whatever the market is willing to pay them. My question was getting at the statement of "revenues [come] from competitions between teams [so] rules intended to maintain competitive balance aren't unreasonable." If someone thinks that where the revenue comes from means exploiting amateur athletes is okay, then why wouldn't that person also think exploiting amateur coaches is okay if the revenue comes from the same place?

Then why not put in a cap on…

Then why not put in a cap on salaries and benefits for coaches?

Who the fuck cares? It's…

Who the fuck cares? It's literally just a sports game. A HIGH SCHOOL sports game. Let kids have lives outside of sports.

They had Caufield for the…

They had Caufield for the early sweep, he had one assist in each game. However, they did not have Holloway for those games.

The reason he is not…

The reason he is not producing one on the gymnastics abuse scandal is probably because Netflix literally released Athlete A less than a year ago. So there's already a very recent, very accessible documentary which details said USA Gymnastics/MSU scandal. Why would he make a second one on the same topic when basically no new details or allegations have emerged?

Yoooo, can we not refer to…

Yoooo, can we not refer to women as 'trinkets'? She's a person, not a toy.

The gymnast abuse scandal is…

The gymnast abuse scandal is far more intertwined with USA Gymnastics as a whole rather than MSU as an institution. Also, that story was just covered in the documentary Athlete A released in June of 2020.

The most arguably stacked…

The most arguably stacked team I can think of in recent memory is the 2018-19 USNTDP U18 team. Seven (7!) of the NTDP players that year went in the top 15, including 3 in the top 9. But that's probably a bit unfair given the nature of what that program is.

Why does Ohio recruiting…

Why does Ohio recruiting matter? It doesn't take Ohio kids to beat OSU, it takes kids that are good athletes and well-coached to beat OSU. Those kids can come from anywhere. OSU's starting lineup has only five Ohio born kids - 2 OL, a TE they barely use, a DE, and a DB who is from Ohio but went to IMG. They have no Michigan-born players starting, and only 2 on the entire roster. Yet they're still heads and shoulders beyond us in talent, because they know that the only way to build an elite team is to recruit from everywhere.

Even with a staff full of folks with Ohio inroads, we're not just swooping in and getting the best Ohio recruits, because they're still far more likely to be OSU fans who will jump on an OSU offer before thinking of going to Michigan.

Penn State has never seen a…

Penn State has never seen a shot they didn't like. Unfortunately for them, they lost almost everyone who could actually score goals from last year's team. They'll be one of the teams that breaks the Corsi rankings, but in a bad way (through their three games, they're at 59% Corsi For, and yet they're 0-3 and have been outscored 13-6).

Yeah, not 100% sure on the…

Yeah, not 100% sure on the reason. I'm wondering if part of it is that it's probably less weird for the players to be playing in front of an empty 2200 seat arena versus the expansive 16000 empty seats at the Kohl? Or, if Wisconsin is playing all of their games at LaBahn this season, maybe a cost-saving measure since LaBahn is a dedicated ice rink?

Quick fix - the games aren't…

Quick fix - the games aren't at Kohl this weekend, they're actually at the smaller LaBahn Arena that's next to the Kohl Center.

You're goddamn right with…

You're goddamn right with that last sentence. OSU's entire AD coalesces around putting the best possible product on the field. Michigan's AD clings to a belief that there's something special about Michigan that separates it from any other school and that alone is enough to succeed.

Let's not forget that Canada…

Let's not forget that Canada probably loses the '72 Summit Series if Bobby Clarke wasn't an asshole who fractured Kharlamov's ankle in Game 6.

I feel like putting Johnson…

I feel like putting Johnson with either Beniers or Bordeleau would be preferable, but maybe that's just me. I think his style of play doesn't really fit in with Beecher as well as it would a more high-end skill-based guy like the other two. I'd probably lean to have Brisson with Beecher and Johnson with Beniers.
