4 weeks 7 hours ago I was part of the graduation

I was part of the graduation class that heard David Davis speak (2004) and I thought he was fantastic. No one had heard of this guy and he came out being pretty funny and not condescending at all. While he did talk about his experiences (the man lost half his face in a race car accident!), he did point on the key fact that we should live our lives and take other calculated risks while we can. Heck, he even called out a graduate by name because of his angry Michigan Daily letter to the editor griping how Michigan State got Condoleeza Rice as its speaker and Michigan got a no-namer guy. And he ended the speech with the "If you want God to laugh, tell him your plans for the future" quote. He got a long, loud ovation for that speech, so I think it was pretty darn good.

Now the student speaker that year on the other hand was awful. My friends and I were rolling our eyes and tuning her out after about the first three minutes. All she did was talk about discovering herself and had zero message for her fellow graduates.

My one brother had Bill Clinton in 2007 and he was fantastic. My father is not his biggest fan but admitted it was a pretty darn good speech and liked what he had to say.

11 weeks 1 day ago That did it for me as well

I have not watched the NBA on a regular basis since that farce of a series. I root for the Pistons and all but I just don't follow as closely as I did years ago.

Also: I was at a Pistons-Warriors game the season Detroit last won a title. One ref blatantly baited Rip Hamilton into a technical foul. Larry Brown went ballistic as did the crowd because the replay showed Rip was called for a bogus foul, didn't chew out the ref except say 'what did I do' and then get T'd up. Years later, I found out Tim Donaghy was one of the refs that game. One can argue coincide but I don't buy it.

Thanks a lot, WDIV (at least it's buried on their website). Click at your own peril.

26 weeks 6 days ago Here's why not

Villanova did win an FCS title a couple years ago, so they're not that bad, but sure as heck wouldn't be anywhere near bowl-worthy competition in FBS. Also: Their stadium seats only 12,000.

Georgetown? They have the smallest D-I football stadium in the country (seats 2,500!) and football has been an afterthought there for a long while (last year was the Hoyas first season finishing above .500 in who knows how long). Also: They don't give away football scholarships as members of the Patriot League. So there's that too.

34 weeks 1 hour ago True

But when stuff like this comes out, it's very frustrating. It also speaks to Bill Martin moreso than anything.

34 weeks 1 hour ago Sirius XM audio

I remember this going down my freshman year at Michigan.

"I tried to call the A.D. at Michigan between 12 and 1. I had a false name. I would give him a fake name and he would call me back. I couldn’t get a hold of him because he was playing squash. The secretary said he demands that he doesn’t get interrupted unless it’s an emergency and if you want you can leave a voicemail. I left a voicemail and went to Louisville and I’m really happy I did."

Squash Martin...oy

36 weeks 1 day ago I assume Bates would want it

I assume Bates would want it that way if a home-and-home is discussed and comes to fruition. My guess is Brandon would try to jazz it up by having it at an NFL stadium or Fenway. But as I write this, I'm now remembering that UMass is playing 4 home games per season over the next few years at Gillette. So maybe Gillette won't happen anyways.

41 weeks 5 days ago 9/2/2000

My first game at The Big House was also my first game ever as a student: vs. Bowling Green. A nice little blowout.

41 weeks 5 days ago Easily one of the top three

Easily one of the top three games I've watched live at Michigan Stadium (Ohio State '03 and '11 are the other two). I really thought Braylon's dropped pass was incomplete--the ending was just stunning.

BTW, here's the embedded highlights

43 weeks 2 days ago I'm partial to Beverly Hills Cop II

Especially the intro, with Eddie Murphy driving through the streets of Detroit in a Ferrari while Bob Seger rocks out.

1 year 8 weeks ago Watching Team 133 rush the

Watching Team 133 rush the field and touching the banner at Cowboys Stadium to a "canned" version of The Victors before this game is just wrong.

1 year 8 weeks ago Unreal.

Quite simply put: A Michigan football Saturday without the Michigan Marching band is sacreligious. And in this case, it's purely unacceptable. The money is there and it's Labor Day weekend.

1 year 23 weeks ago Funny but untimely

The sign was funny but the Sugar Bowl was not the place to flaunt it, especially in the middle of a tight game. I know I didn't need another hypocratic "pride comes before the fall" coming from the mouth of Dantonio in case our luck ran out, which thankfully it didn't.

1 year 27 weeks ago 1-800-Reality

It doesn't sound like Joe Amendola knew what 1-800-REALITY is really about when he made that reference. Personally, Sandusky needs a new lawyer (not that I think it'll help him that much the way things are going).

1 year 27 weeks ago So when is Joe Dumars going

So when is Joe Dumars going to announce the return of teal jerseys?

1 year 27 weeks ago Bottom line to recruits from the coaches

If you are interested in Michigan, you better walk the walk and not just talk the talk. Cliche, I know, but it's obviously the rule now based off this and Pharoh Brown's visit to Oregon.

1 year 28 weeks ago Good luck to them

Those are Rodriguez's core guys, even if Gibson is a fail of a secondary coach. Best of luck in the desert.

1 year 28 weeks ago I remember him from his NFL days

Chester McGlockton was a force on the Raiders and Chiefs D-lines in the 90s and a four-time Pro Bowler. I had no clue he was an assistant at Stanford until I saw the news of his passing. Very sad and too young at 42.

1 year 28 weeks ago Fouls, assists and free throws.

We shot better than UVA (44% to 41.5%) but fouls killed us looking at the stats (20 for us, 12 for UVA). UVA: 17-22 for free throws while we were only 4-7. That pretty much is your difference maker. Also got outrebounded and they doubled us on assists.

1 year 29 weeks ago Pretty sure these shows are taped way in advance

But it's cool timing nontheless. Cue the conspiracy thoeries from Ohio in 3...2...1...

1 year 29 weeks ago One of my Marine Corps

One of my Marine Corps Marathon running buddies is a Buckeye and he basically had a "shrugged shoulders" reaction to the loss and is hoping for the best with Urban Meyer.

At the game, the guy standing to my left was a Buckeye but was very gracious/tolerant/not an a-hole since he was at the game with a Michigan friend. He even admitted to me that Fitz's TD should have counted. The only annoying Buckeye within earshot of me was this cute but obnoxious blonde in the next row yelling "LET'S GO BUCKS!" at every chance she could get. People were telling her to shut up vociferously in the second half. At the end of the game, she got into it verbally with a Michigan fan sitting right behind her.

1 year 29 weeks ago Fans who were at the game did

Fans who were at the game did not see the replay of the stomp because the stadium TV never showed it, according to my friends who went. The first time they saw it was after we ate Thanksgiving dinner and were watching the Ravens-Niners pregame. Their reaction pretty much was "yeah, that's not good."

I want to give Suh the benefit of the doubt, but Schwartz must have a heart-to-heart talk with the guy. I don't doubt Suh is a good dude, but maybe like some actors get lost in their roles or cops get too deep in their cover, perhaps Suh has blurred the line between his off and on the field personas. It sounds crazy, but it can happen. Let's not foget that Suh is no Larry Harrison or Albert Haynesworth, who I both think are not the greatest human beings in the world when compared to Suh (Harrison insulted the commish in a magazine article whereas Suh actually asked for a meeting...Haynesworth actually caused bodily harm when he stomped on a guy's head).

Leads me to one last thing: The media guys, especially the ex-NFL types, are a bunch of fricking hypocrites when it comes to Suh.

1 year 29 weeks ago Yep.

I find it interesting that the refs have not called anything since Suh got ejected. His ejection was right and he'll probably get suspended, but as a Lions fan, I agree that this officiating has been pure garbage. If this crew ends up doing the Super Bowl, it's going to be a crapfest.

1 year 29 weeks ago So am I an idiot too then?

So am I an idiot too then? Must be since I rushed the field and somehow managed to get a master's degree from an Ivy League school in addition to my Michigan bachelor's.

Have a drink, calm down, get off the internets and just enjoy the game on Saturday instead of playing brother's keeper. One thing I've learned in life: You can't control everything.

1 year 29 weeks ago Forgot about the dropoff. It

Forgot about the dropoff. It is indeed a steep jump from the last row onto the field, but just as bad is trying to get back into the stands--that was a helluva climb to make and I think I hurt myself more on that in '03 than the jump.

In 2003, no one got pepper sprayed from what I remember. There were a few on-field folks trying to stop people by putting their arms out but that was pretty much futile. A bunch of officials stood around the goal posts to make sure the students rushing didn't try to take those down, which no one bothered attempting to do. Everyone pretty much ran to midfield to soak it all in.

One thing I have noticed this year is more on-field security watching the stands during time outs...I wonder if they will be more proactive about stopping people when/if people rush.

1 year 29 weeks ago I did it in 2003

Emails went around to students saying to rush the field after if we beat them because then it would clinch the Big 10 and the Rose Bowl berth for the first time since '97. We won...and we haven't beaten those guys since. That was my last year at Michigan as an undergraduate. If we win, I won't mind seeing the students rush the field (I'll be at the game but sitting in the old folks seats). It may look odd and get some raised eyebrows across the country for beating a blah Ohio team, but after 8 years of frustration it'll feel good. Let the new generation do what they will.

1 year 30 weeks ago The fans were indeed nice. In

The fans were indeed nice. In my section, none of them were vocal toward the Michigan fans and basically minded their own business pretty well.

With regard to the Michigan Marching Band halftime performance: I thought it was by far the WORST one I've ever seen in my 11 years of attending Michigan games. Just awful. I can't blame the Nebraska fans for complaining about that. I usually enjoy them but this was just painful.

1 year 30 weeks ago More obligatory Bo pointing.

1 year 30 weeks ago I think this took a couple of takes to get it right

Looks to me as if Hoke was about to crack up laughing in the beginning there. I'll be in my seat at 11:45 sharp. Hoping for a great start to Thanksgiving week back in the Mitten.
