I can't believe people can

I can't believe people can forget the halftime adjustments on the defense that season.  It was unlike anything we had seen under Rich Rod or anything since for that matter...

Not that I'm arguing it wasn't the senior leadership and experience on that year's DLine.  Or the presence of Coach Montgomery.  It might have also just been luck.

1. Just ridiculous...

2. I could only see this rumor being floated by him to get an extension.  As long as there are other crazy rumors, he might as well take a shot at his managment getting worried and giving him more money.

3. Just assuming this isn't crazy (yes, it's crazy!), I do have to wonder about hiring an NFL offensive genius since they don't have nearly the time they do in the pros to install their system.  Gotta wonder if it can be dumbed down and still be effective.  Clearly, Chip Kelly could handle both (though he started in college), but Charlie Weiss struggled (obviously for more than just this reason) because he tried to do too much on offense.

Don't get your hopes up.  Just seems like good practice if DeBord is handling it.

Assistant coaches generally

Assistant coaches generally don't have contracts.  Absent an employment contract, their status as employees may be obvious in the legal sense, but may not matter in the timeframe of a coaching change.  It's not like anyone's going to court to figure out their employment status.  As such, being told to do something or not to do something is just a good idea for a school to do since those assistants may take the opportunity to talk to recruits about the school they're expecting to work for.  It's not as cut and dry as you may think.

Couldn't it just mean...

That they're precluded from trading him and we're able to talk about a Harbaugh hire as soon as the 49ers are eliminated from the playoffs in the event they are for some sum of money?

Looking vaguely senior-year-Chris-Perry good!

whatever

I'm glad everyone's being civil and grateful and we should be grateful, but this is a terrible year to do this.  He won't be drafted in the first round and he won't have a guaranteed contract when there's no season to start the year next year.  He's just lost millions of dollars if this is true.  The decision has set back the program, but I don't blame him for that.  I just blame him for what looks like a poor decision.

That said, good luck, Darius.  I hope it works out for you in the short term.  I know it will in the long term if you're willing to work at it and not be discouraged by the lost money.

Thank you for voicing a concern

that is completely legitimate.  Clearly most people don't have the sense to realize that it is a valid issue to point out.

were they

worse than Rich Rods?  After 3 years at MICHIGAN?  I doubt it.

oh, I finally get it

Rich Rod was HUSTLING the Big Ten and the NCAA.  Next year he was just going to PLAY DEFENSE, start caring two poops about Special Teams and then actually field a viable offense against GOOD teams and we were going to go 16-0 in a 14 game schedule (including the National Championship of course)!  Yeah, that's why I'm depressed we have a coach who's actually going to try to win instead of trying to be right.

Sorry...

With respect to:

To add to your depression, compare Harbaugh's record at Stanford to that of Rodriguez at Michigan.  They are nearly identical through three years.  Harbaugh just got a fourth year, went 12-1 with his first ever second-year starting QB, and at a time the conference's dominant team was doen.  What might have been......

Had Rich Rod won 2 (or even 1) game against Ohio St with a clearly inferior team (even if he didn't say "What's your deal?") he'd still be the coach.  If only that had been...

the wave?  Seriously? The wave is a testament to going to sporting events to be a part of a mob of people as opposed to actually watching and responding to a sporting event.  Lame.

Huh?  The new extension

Huh?  The new extension probably has a raise but in exchange a poison-pill buyout to leave for the Michigan job.  He could still sign the contract if he wanted to coach there next year and leave after next season....

Playing Miles

I've always thought this was actually the case.  Martin wasn't a baffoon with Miles.  He was being bombarded by the pro-Miles group including Dan Dierdorf and others who were going public.  Then Miles was put in a position where he needed an answer and Martin made himself unavailable.

Again, I have no evidence nor am I claiming this is true, but no one has evidence that Martin was a moronic AD who forgot his cellphone and yet everyone seems to believe that's the case.

I think Martin's real screw up was overestimating how coaches view the Michigan job.

And I wonder what Desmond's real role was.  Was he in the pro-Miles group and did he try to force Martin's hand or did he leak it to put Miles in a corner when Martin would be unavailable?  And if that's the case was Herbie used by Desmond?  Or did he agree to do it?  Or was Desmond not his source?  We'll likely never know...
