Agreed. I would rather have legitimate minor league systems for basketball and football for athletes who really do not care at all about receiving an education.

However, there is a risk that he has an off year or gets injured. Additionally, if you are guaranteed to be selected in the first round, a player is at least guaranteed to stick around with a NBA team for a few years. That's the case if a player is selected in the second round.

I thought Mitch McGary should have left last year since his value was probably not going to get any higher, and I feel the same way about Stauskas. Regardless, I hope the kid makes the best decision for him. Separately, I think McGary and Robinson should probably stay another year now. I really hope the both of them have incredible years next year and that they boost their stocks to lottery levels.

I can understand the parents' concern. If I thought my son was mixing in with the wrong crowd, I would definitely try to do something about it especially at that age since he is still a kid. Just hope MM ends up at the school that is best for him whether it be MSU, OSU or wherever.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||Although I don't think it||
Although I don't think it should matter as much as it does, the name of the institution makes a difference. To state a reality, substantially most employers outside the state of Michigan will hire a Michigan grad over an equally qualified MSU grad for most jobs. MSU is not considered by many outside of the state of Michigan to be a great school. It's just not.
If I obtained the same set of degrees from MSU (or OSU for that matter), I can almost guarantee that I would not have enjoyed the same success as I do today. Luck and timing definitely play a part, but name recognition and connected alumni do as well.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||I don't think it's just the||
I don't think it's just the education. If the athlete has enough foresight (and many times the athlete doesn't), it is also about networks. I know some of these athletes get jobs later in life simply because they were Michigan athletes. For myself, I know that having two Michigan degrees helped me with other alumni in opening doors. Just having the name on a diploma is not going to break open any barriers, but it does help nonetheless if you play the cards right.
And with respect to General Studies, I don't think that matters all that much. I was a history degree, and it's not like that made me better prepared for my current profession. If the athlete takes his future seriously, he or she will have opportunities later in life whether it is a general studies major or something you self-righteously deem more worthy.

He's a kid and wants to go a different school. Let him be. I'm not sure what character issues you are referencing.

Exactly. Everyone knows Gardner a TO machine, including Borges.

Seriously, our fanbase reminds me ND more and more. Please stop.

I don't think the announcers have been that bad. That was the big story before the game. Maybe the narrative changes next week. However, I think fans (of just about every fanbase) are bit overly senstive these days.

To Sparty's credit, they are at least trying to schedule marquee games. I personally hope we replace ND with a comparable program.
|30 weeks 5 hours ago||No, that is not right. I||
No, that is not right. I went to Michigan for law school and had a job during my first year. I also had a partial scholarship to law school for my first year, and I wasn't expected to ram my head against 300 pound linemen. I don't think the football players are being "exploited" per se, but I certainly don't think that the current system fairly compensates football players for the actual amount of time they put in vis-a-vis the revenue being generated by the football program.

Plus 1. People are really quick too judge what a player did when he was 18-21 years old.

I live in Seoul now so I don't watch every game any longer, but I catch most. I'm glad I didn't watch Akron (mostly because I'm in Honolulu on my way to Maui). The recap sounded brutal, but it is what it is. Life is too short to get upset over this especially since a bottle of scotch can make everything all better. Hopefully, the team learns and improves so I don't have to buy me another bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. All in jest of course. Go Blue!

Mack Brown just made his comments out of desperation. The dude is trying to keep his job. I'm not taking them too seriously. The former players, on the other hand, have a right to be pissed.

I'm not a redshirt hoarder any longer. I think it helps recruiting to show that the coaches are willing to play the best players regardless of whether the team burns a redshirt or not. The only kids who should redshirt are the players who are not physically or mentally ready to play. The best players should be on the depth chart.

Clean up the turnovers and penalties, and it looks like we will be fine. Time to bring on the CHICKENS!

Has Furman really struggled that much? There was maybe two plays where I thought Furman was not in great position, and there another two where I didn't think it was his fault at all. I actually think he is much improved.

I'm not really worried just yet. I also don't agree that this level of play won't beat other B10 teams. Have you been watching these games? The B10 is pretty awful. We still need to be a lot better on both sides of the ball, but this is pretty much a preseason game in many ways.

Gardner doesn't look comfortable. Not sure what it is, but I really hope he settles down before the end of this game so that he's ready to go for ND.

I agree. "To hell with [Ohio]." Just clicked on the thread because I was interested into why we were supposed to be interested and didn't find anything of substance.
Off-topic...Rivalry be damned, but I am one of the few M fans that could care less if Ohio (the football program not the entire university or state) fell off the face of the planet and ceased to exist.
EDIT: Not saying that people shouldn't post stories about Ohio. I love the First Amendment, and it's just a football blog fergawdsakes. Just saying I don't understand why people actually care about every Ohio story.

No. If anything, I think the season should be shortened by a game. There is additional injury risk, and the players are not being paid for what is already a full time job (and not just during the academic year).

Turley is a dbag, but I thought Jay Mohr's question regarding relatively career mobility of coaches vis-a-vis players was poignant. I am estatic to have Brady as our coach but feel the NCAA has a double standard for coaches and players.
