You're right on a week-to-week basis that yes, the team's performance in any given game (or probably season) is independent of your individual mindset as a fan. Obviously.
But high-level decisions made by the university and the athletic department are made with various stakeholders in mind - and yes, as fans, we are "customers", and thus the most important stakeholders in that equation. Even more than student-athletes, unfortunately. If we threaten to spend our money elsewhere b/c the product sucks, the university is likely to make changes. That was the entire premise of the Minnesota-Brandon-Hoke protest.
Brian is probably the most influential voice on Michigan football, full stop. What he says matters, and I am extremely thankful he hasn't jumped off the Harbaugh train like many of the psychopaths apparently lurking in our fanbase.
O'Korn played extremely well, full stop. Drops all over the place, RBs did awful in blitz pickup, OL had their worst game of the year in pass pro. Playcalling was atrocious. Not on the QB.

I was just defeinding the original "whiner" comment, and all I'm saying is that I personally don't appreciate this bizarre American tendency to equate athletic success with being a good person. Why do we insist on dumping all these extra-athletic qualities into the guy just because he wins?
As an example, Spieth clearly knows how to grind on the course (as do all PGA Tour Pros), and his decision not to re-tee out of frustration on 13 was remarkable. But it doesn't tell you anything about his "maturity" off the course, and it doesn't tell you whether he has "class". Maturity should be measured using way more than any of us know about the kid.

I watch way too much golf. Every time this guy is mic'd up he gets caught berating Geller or complaining about things that are his own fault. Case in point: 1st hole today, "this is crap! Great shots not getting rewarded." Bro, great shots don't land in 3 foot deep crap; maybe you took the wrong line. You could argue that's a good mental strategy on the course, but yeah it makes him a whiner.
What Spieth and Tiger have in common is that they both have management teams that branded them at a young age to conform to what golf's corporate powers think they want out of young superstars (oh he's so kind and generous!). At least Rickie tries to be himself.
Golf for sure has a pace of play problem, but like the doom and gloom about other sports it's hardly experiencing an existential crisis. In almost all cases, the demand curve (if you're not focused on one corse or one game or one team) hasn't changed much at all, but there's oversupply and/or prices have gone up significantly relative inflation. I was briefly part of the same exact conversations btwn the Maize Rage and the AD about attendance during the Amaker years. Ultimately, the AD needs to make it more feasible and enjoyable to attend games.

Rankings work much the same way as the world golf rankings for pros. Performance in "counting events" gives you points, and players are ranked by point totals divided by some number, all adjusted for strength of field. Obviously an imperfect system, but amateur golf doesn't have a level playing field to begin with.
Carlson isn't even close to the best player on the Michigan team though - he was apparently 5th in tournament scoring average last year. To sustain that level of performance across US Am qualifying, 36 holes of stroke play, and all those matches is absurd. The kid can play.

+ the constant stream of claims that "this season is a disappointment" when we made the tournament without our 2 seniors (1 of whom has NBA talent) and almost beat a team that went on to the Elite 8. I guess it's a disappointment that Caris and Spike got hurt, but the fact that they still made the tournament is a hell of a coaching job by Beilein

GUYS but how many games would Spike have played with Caris's injury? Probably ALL OF THEM. A guy with that kind of heart, grit, toughness, and IQ would have scored 20 ppg with the same foot injury, so I don't see how anyone is worried about some hips.

Slightly disagree. DB ran the athletic department like a puppet CEO for a Leveraged Buyout Firm - aka what he did for Dominos and what he's doing for Toys R Us. When you manage a LBO, your goal is to restructure debt and increase short term cash flows, aka fire people. In Dominos case, they had a legacy founder who paid no attention to his financial statements. At Michigan, we had Bill MFing Martin.
DB seems like he's pretty good at firing people for no reason. The illiterate idiot also seems like he thinks that what worked at Dominos could just be cookie cutter applied to any organization, regardless of context

Micromanagers are usually also bad at dictating high level decisions
