My High School Alma Mater

At the risk of eliciting a resounding "cool story bro" from the board, the school that won this game, Belen Jesuit Prep., is my middle school/ high school (6-12) alma mater.  We are also the Wolverines, but only because the Jesuit priests that came over to Miami from Cuba and re-founded the school (after Castro closed the original in Habana) thought that the word "wolverine" meant "wolf cub", two of which are on the school's crest.

The Miami Northwestern Senior HIgh School that was defeated in this game is the same school that produced current Miami (YTM) 'Canes Jacory Harris, Sean Spence, Tommy Streeter (and more), as well as Antonio Bryant, Vernon Carey and a number of other pros.

This is me on the JV team in 9th grade, 1997, and a good example of the uniforms:

Work experience / productive

Work experience / productive time off between undergrad and application can be a big boost.  My LSAT was a little below Mich Law's average, but I had spent two years working and studying overseas ater graduating from undergrad and it seemed to be a key reason for my subsequent admission.  More than some other schools, Michigan seems to take the "whole package" into account (yeah, I know, that's what she said, but you get the gist).  As the poster above mentioned, a good story goes a long way.  Good luck.

Missed it...

But I do know that Golden Harvest is certainly the best place to get breakfast in East Lansing!

I'm going to be sad when my 50+ points expire only because I will no longer be able to plus 1 things like this.  Sigh.

Don't know if you were just Don't know if you were just being sarcastic, but, before it was a website, CNNSI was an actual network in the mid-90s. It failed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN_Sports_Illustrated
I'm heading out for Camp I'm heading out for Camp Randall this evening, and, honestly, I only foresee pain. Will be there in my #5 jersey until the end, though. Just like the band on the Titanic.
Positive things about this Positive things about this post: coherent usage of the English language. Negative things about this post: Everything else, plus a reference to the Red Sox (seriously, "Nation" members, no one outside of your provincial town cares). EDIT: This is so far down that I wanted to make clear that it was directed toward kmedved.
Synergy As someone who was born and raised in Miami and is now at Michigan for grad school, I have to say that my football rooting interest synergy was off the charts during that game. The Dolphins haven't had a "great" QB since Marino, and I'm hoping that Henne can be the guy (I know, I know, only one game, but here's hoping it continues).
They did the same Van Halen They did the same Van Halen show earlier this season...either the EMU or IU homegame I believe? EDIT: Sorry, someone posted the same info in the interim.
I'm jealous of all you plane I'm jealous of all you plane folks (open bar), it looks like a great time (open bar), but $599 was a bit much for me, even though the tix themselves ended up being a bit pricey in the end. Luckily the night game leaves plenty of time for a leisurely 7 hour drive (definitively not open bar)...
Haha Yeah, having left the Tokyo job for grad school here in Ann Arbor makes the travel arrangements a tad easier...
70% I'd say 70%, but a large part of that is (a) the fact that I just bought tickets and thus have made a decent investment; (b) I can't go on a 7+ hour road trip without hope that we are going to win... The self-delusion starts NOW.
Pat White He was third on the depth chart after Pat White, but that was more a function of Pat White seeing regular playing time for wildcat purposes. Henne will be the starter, while White will probably stay in the second slot.
It was on TV. It was on the 9am Live Sportscenter Top 10 at number 6.
Great Looking forward to it!
Thanks Thanks 98xj, looks like I won't have far to go to reach one.
Michigan Section Where is the Michigan section typically? I have tix in section 125 row 27...
I was in it Showed up to my section, my seats were within a section that was taped off.  A few organizers gave me and everyone else who showed up in that area a blue shirt that said something like "ATT presents the first every Block M blablabla."  The student organizers were really strict about making sure the shape and color were consistent until the game started, when it became impossible to enforce.  I for one am surprised and glad to hear that it still looked decent in the second half, when everyone in the stadium started going nuts!  No harm in a little fun, says I.
i are scientists You do know that "We are Scientists" is a band, and that the "i are scientists" slogan has been a "joke" / marketing thing for them for quite some time right?  I guess it's kind of lame that I even feel slightly slighted by this sort of thing as a fan of the band.
Between all of the noise Between all of the noise surrounding both football, hurricanes, and the ongoing implosion of the financial sector, this news has not gotten much coverage.  Echoing the poster above, thanks Brian, for writing this piece.
Whoa. A Catholic priest with Whoa. A Catholic priest with a young son has more to worry about than unruly M fans.
E-man, I don't see where you E-man, I don't see where you are finding all of this overwhelming Sheridan love because it certainly isn't here or with anyone with whom I have spoken. Threet seems to have a stronger arm and be able to make throws than Sheridan simply cannot. His only problem is that he consistently (not in the Joe Morgan, universal-best-quality ever in an athlete / team sense--that's cosistency) throws uncatchable passes to wide open receivers. I hope he fixes that. Also, as others have already noted, he's transferred once and could only plausibly transfer to a I-AA (FCS) school from here.
It definitely was a weird It definitely was a weird feeling.  We've experienced "rebuilding" years before, for example with a freshman QB or after the departure of a nucleus of skill players etc., but what makes this different is that there are not only many new players but also a very new, unfamiliar offense / coaches.  Combine the on-going "construction" of a new team and system with the on-going physical stadium construction, throw in a blocked punt for good measure, and yeah, I'd say it was pretty damn surreal.
I agree

Things got pretty dead in the 2nd-most of 3rd quarters, but once we started coming back / Utah started self-destructing, the place was quite loud.  I don't know if it was the steel frames (probably not since they are still mostly open space) or maybe the position of where my seats are this year is just louder, but in my personal opinion it seemed louder than last year.

Furthermore, I agree about the atmosphere after the game.  Heading out of the stadium, it seemed as though people were a bit disappointed (hard not to be after the emotional roller-coaster in the 4th) but also encouraged by the improvement on both sides of the ball as the game progressed.

Personally, I think that if we build on today's second half with a solid Miami game, we may just be ready to go in to South Bend and get a win.

Phelps: 3 Golds, 3 World

Phelps: 3 Golds, 3 World Records.  This third one seemed particularly easy, and to cap it the PVK dude getting mention in the other swimming thread gets bronze!

Wahoo-A lot of respect for Wahoo-A lot of respect for UVA for doing that on the closing date of the OB. Having been to games at the OB when it was simply impossible to beat the Canes there, it was hard to fathom when I saw the box score. Thank God I was very distracted and far way that day, watching M get beat my Wisconsin on TV in A2. Ugh.
The U Being born in Miami, FL in '83 and living there for the 18 years after that, I have to say that the Hurricanes hold a very special place in my heart. Also, those that call them "thugs" have not been following the program recently, and those that use the Sean Taylor murder to bolster their argument (sigh, cbssportsline commenters) are not even worth interacting with. Anyhow, my first football game attendance memory was the 1992 OB 22-0 stomping (I heart Gino Toretta) of Nebraska for a share of the 1991 national title. Yeah, that's also the year the Huskies beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl, forcing the Canes to share with them. Damn it. Now, even though a new U of M gets a lot of my cash and my football loyalty, I can't help but feel depressed imagining the Canes playing in a half-empty Dolphins Stadium next year (with the god-damn dirt infield mucking things up to boot).
Until this moment, I have Until this moment, I have never understood the deep, soul-crushing, unbearable darkness that many people in my current hometown must feel prior to undertaking the all-to-common act of flinging themselves in front of oncoming trains. After reading this thread and your last comment, HailToTheVictor, I think that I can finally empathize with them.
Your penchant for magical Your penchant for magical realism has inspired me to go read Marquez' 100 Years of Solitude again. Incidentally, Marquez is a big fan of Castro, who in turn has often publicly stated his affinity for M football.
Seriously, there is no Seriously, there is no ambiguity or use of euphemism in Iowa's statutory code (available on their website). Sexual abuse in the second-degree and sexual abuse in the third-degree are both clearly defined (which are the charges, not sexual abuse in the first-degree, at least according to the news article I googled). Both offenses are felonies and second-degree involves forcible sexual contact (which is defined as penetration in Iowa). FWIW, sexual abuse in the third-degree also includes any sexual act done to the person while they are incapacitated in such a way that they can't give consent. In other words, getting shit-faced drunk and partying isn't giving consent.
Yeah. J.W.-Upon reading your post and re-reading the Freep article, I think you're right and I was wrong about the interest thing. Also, the part in the article about how-- "As part of the discovery process, a judge had given Rodriguez until the end of Tuesday to reveal whether the University of Michigan or anyone else had agreed to pay WVU on his behalf" pretty well points to the obvious reason for why this happened now.
Good point. While none of us knows what the terms of this deal are and thus this is all speculation, I am willing to bet that West Virginia will be charging interest on the money that it is now owed, probably at least enough to make up for the whole NPV "Would you rather take a dollar today" issue.
"Settlement" As, J.W. Wells Co. mentions above, this is a "settlement" in name only. That is, WVU had filed a lawsuit against RichRod for the buyout amount, and now that RichRod has agreed to pay the full amount a "settlement agreement" will be signed that says "I give you $4 million in consideration for you agreeing to drop the lawsuit against me." So, even though the result is the same as had RichRod just paid the $4 million to begin with, I guess it is still technically a settlement because it results in the end of the now pending lawsuit. Talk about a lot of wasted energy on something that is now a non-issue.
Goof Portion A Goof portion? Gwarsh, 4million sure sounds like a lot, ahyuk! Ok, so this is a cheap and unfunny exploitation of an easy to make typo involving two adjacent keys. Alas, I could not resist. Will go self-flagellate now like the guy in Scarlet Letter who boned Demi Moore (in the movie version).
Ad problem seconded

I am also having the problem with yardbarker ads on a white screen taking over the browser window after the MGoBlog page displays briefly. On Firefox on Mac OSX Leopard.

Also, more of a suggestion, but I wonder if there would not be a way to prevent the Popular and Hot tabs from becoming "All Time Most Read" and "All Time Most Commented" sections, respectively. Perhaps by having posts disappear off the "Hot" list after not being commented on for X amount of days, or in the case of the "Popular" tab, after not being viewed for X amount of days? I know it sounds nitpicky, but the features seem to already have lost their utility. Keep up the good work.

DUI, DWI, OWI DUI, DWI, OWI, etc. These aren't separate crimes, necessarily. Usually, the terms refer to the same infraction, but different state statutes use different nomenclature. For example, Grady was arrested on suspicion of OWI (Operating a vehicle While Intoxicated). OWI is driving with a BAC over .08, and is Michigan's term for what many other states call DUI. Also, Michigan used to have a two-tiered drunk driving law consisting of two different offenses: impaired driving at .08-.09, and drunk driving for .1 and above. Now they are unified and .08 is the only marker as far as BAC is concerned. As was mentioned above, for obvious reasons criminal law tends to focus on effects rather than potential outcomes (hence the law of attempt). Therefore, if Grady had killed someone such an exacerbating factor would have increased the magnitude of punishment. However, he did not. Punishments are generally to some extent both retributive (pay back society for the injury you did to it) and utilitarian / rehabilitative (let's prevent this from happening again, by either incapacitating the person in jail or reforming him). When it comes to this type of situation, the law tends to lean more to the retributive side, and essentially says "yes you harmed society by driving drunk, but not nearly as much as society would have been harmed had someone been killed--even if this is due to your own dumb luck."
That's awesome. And what the That's awesome. And what the hell, it's the freaking wolf again. Congratulations.
There's nothing wrong with There's nothing wrong with America that can't be fixed with what's right with America-n, hot, blonds painting themselves like the flag. Speaking of what's wrong with America, on the Discovery Channel there is a documentary about rabbits and the narrator said "These baby rabbits will be having babies of their own in a few months." Goddamn shame. Babies having babies and flauntin it on the tv.
Still getting Kirk Lewis on Still getting Kirk Lewis on this end. Bizarre. On a side note, I hate each and every one of you in the US because I have work on Friday. These Japanese are just plain unpatriotic--I haven't seen ONE PERSON with an American flag in their lapel. Word is they are also secretly Muslims who question whether getting shot down in Vietnam qualifies someone for being Commander in Chief.
Was a wolf like 15 minutes Was a wolf like 15 minutes ago. Now Kirk Lewis.
I heard from a credible I heard from a credible source that the exact jersey in that picture was promised to J.T. Floyd, causing Braylon to get so angry that he went to the adidas factory in AufbBundesligaMeinLeben, Germania to personally urinate on each and every one as it rolled off of the nazi-themed assembly line. Then he went on that Bob Costas show with Buzz Bissinger and Will Leitch where Buzz Bissinger had to interject and tell him he was full of shit. True story. I was there, just shows you what the family values are like under DickRod.
I would love 2006's Paper I would love 2006's Paper Tiger defense if it meant that more bands would make spectacular songs like Spoon's Paper Tiger. That is all.
Washtenaw Dairy Washtenaw Dairy for ice cream. Although 3 twenty-some guys sitting around licking ice cream cones is kind of...eh. Find some girls, then go get ice cream at Washtenaw Dairy.
Thanks, I realized that later Thanks, I realized that later in the day and this morning is going much more smoothly (other than the compulsive, masturbatory checking of posts I make for new replies).
BGH-Glad to hear that it BGH-Glad to hear that it isn't based on anything that's happened to you recently. Anyone who attempts to write short, scat-themed stories and posts them on their blog is good in my book.
Eh. Since everyone is talking about Japan I feel the need to take an enormous dump on the conversation by saying that stuff seems way less wacky after living here for any significant amount of time and that the Japanese shows all copy one another and blend into one mess of brightly colored text and plastic looking, high-pitched voiced women all of whom I would still definitely have sex with immediately if given the chance. BGH-Speaking of taking dumps, is that story on your blog...I shudder to think...non-fiction?? Reminds me of that part in trainspotting a little bit minus the sleeping with a middle-school (in the book, HS in the movie I think?) girl part.
