Great news about Baron Browning. Elite athlete and scholar, he's the kind of recruit I'd like to see at Michigan. Hope this positive news continues.

I just don't see it as a big deal. Right now we are locked into one season with all big rivalry games on the road. If that becomes a solid pattern, there is reason to complain, but I doubt that will be the case. If we wanted ND, and we did, these were the terms. I bet in future deals, the schedule will work for us as well. That home game slate in 2019 is looking incredible by the way.

Thank you for the pep talk. Very much needed! My wife is a non-profit attorney, so I need to make money, but I'll definitely look into it. Funny thing is, she is a cpa and meant to go to law school to become a tax lawyer, lol.

Not sure if it's a regret yet, but three years ago I was deciding to pursue either accounting or occupational therapy as a career (I know, very different paths). I chose accounting mainly because the other track would take a lot more school. I started working for a top cpa firm in my area, so it's all solid on the outside, but I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing and am hating the long hours. It's also next to a therapy center, and I see what seem like a bunch of happy and fulfilled workers leaving the building. I feel the fate is rubbing my decision in my face. Hoping the accounting thing seems better in a few months.

Did anyone play Basewars? It was baseball with cyborgs. You could fight and kill opposing team players, arm your squad with tank treads, swords, and machine guns, and, oh, it was a pretty solid baseball game too. I've always wondered why this one doesn't get more discussion among retrogamers.

I don't know about this dynasty talk, but I'd bet Rutgers sees vast improvement from its pre-B1G years. The conference will give it more credibility for all its sports. Their recruiting will improve and I think they will start landing more of the in-state elite talent. I see them becoming much more competitive. But with Michigan, OSU, PSU, MSU, and hell even Maryland is picking up some studs, I can't picture anything above competitive beyond the horizon.

If only I said it defined him. The topic was evaluating Warde's first five months and I gave an evaluation. His two biggest public decisions have been busts. That he "likes the day" is the reasoning he gave for making one of those bust decisions to a major local news outlet. I don't know what you want from me. It's idiotic reasoning and foolish thing to announce publicly. I'm going to knock him for that, it was stupid. Feel free to disagree. I'm not giving up on Warde, but I'm comfortable saying he's done a poor job thus far. If you don't like night games, you might feel more positively about his performance.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Which is why I asked for||
Which is why I asked for clarification. I don't know, so I'm not going to assume he gut-feeling'd it during his tenure. However, I do know the man was a successful CEO for nearly two decades, hired Coach Harbaugh, and pulled in an awesome deal with Nike. Those things tell me he doesn't make a decision solely based on a gut-feeling or personal preference, but probably knows how to synthesize information to make wise decisions. Warde, on the other hand, told us himself that he chose to abstain from night games this year because he likes day games. That's his process on this particular decision.
From the article:
“No night game this year,” new Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed to The Detroit News on Thursday.
“I like the day,” Manuel said, smiling. “I like daylight.”
That's a doofus response as it gets.
He goes on to reference Bo and his desire for day games, and that is ingrained in him. As much as I love Bo, what he thought back in his day shouldn't be the end-all-be-all deciding factor today.
Obviously Hackett felt differently. Here's Hackett from a different article discussing night games. You'll love this quote.
"I'm going to look at everything, ... and we're going to make decisions," he said.
"Next year … get used to more than one game at night at Michigan," Hackett said. "That will be true for all the Big Ten schools."
From reading that, it not only shed a little light on Hackett's method, "looking at everything," but he seemed to think night games, plural, was where Michigan football and the rest of the B1G is heading. I'm not even advocating for more than one, but the former successful CEO, the guy who landed Harbaugh and the Nike deal, seemed to think it was a good idea. Despite the difficulties of scheduling a night game (cold weather in particular) he sees value in having more than one.
I'm happy to give Warde more time, but my understanding of his thinking process, revealed by the man himself, shows he isn't as keen about data-collecting before making a decision as Hackett was, but is more of a gut-feeling guy, and that's not a good thing. I understand it was one decision, but I really hope it was a one-time deal and not the way he'll handle other big decisions. Relying on his gut or on What Would Bo Do? seems precarious to me.
Sorry for all the words. I was really bummed when Warde revealed his "thinking process" last winter. It was hugely disappointing to me to say the least.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||I kind of appreciate that||
I kind of appreciate that things didn't go smoothly with the scheduling, even though it went poorly for Michigan. This series has never been smooth. Both schools seem to have a chip on their shoulder regarding the other...both feel like they are the better football team and institution. It's a competition of who can stick their nose up farther at the other, and I wouldn't want it any other way. That's what I love about this series. There is a lot of smugness (mostly from the ND side, in my partial opinion). Seeing those smug assholes cringe after each of those last-second losses was so beautiful. The shutout loss hurt, but in someways I preferred it because losing at the last second, when your hopes are so high, is so painful. Plus, we have like eight shutouts to their one. And we taught them football and they used our stadium plan to build their stadium. The Detroit Free Press freaking NAMED them the Fighting Irish for crying out loud.
I'm looking forward to Harbaugh and company taking that road win in 2018, scheduling debacle be damned.

I really hope we get into a four-year cycle, scheduling a home-and-home with Notre Dame, then replace them with a home-and-home with another national power, rinse and repeat.. Tradition maintained with a dose of elite diversity.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||I honestly don't understand||
I honestly don't understand what you mean by highlighting "as far as I can tell". What do you mean? I don't have any evidence that Hacket inserted his own ego into his decision-making process. Are you disagreeing or taking issue with that? Are you saying I'm inserting MY ego into this, my wants? I promise, if I was making the decision, my personal desires wouldn't factor into the decision. If that is what you're getting at, it doesn't work. I do believe the positives outweight the negatives in regards to having a single night game a year, which is something I believe most fans would be comfortable with.
Also, that's poor thinking: We never did BLANK before and we survived, so we don't need to do BLANK now. Let's be stagnant and never change. That's lousy reasoning. I bet you there were people complaining when Crisler added the wings to the helmet, too. How dare he stray from tradition! How does that strategy work out historically?
There are plenty of good and bad reasons to have and not have night games. A great compromise, one I think the majority of fans would like, would be to have one night game a year. Ratings skyrocket at primetime, they attract recruits, and many fans love the big event atmosphere that just doesn't exist at noon. I honestly don't think there was a good reason, aside from not having lights on the stadium, for not having night games. I understand there are additional costs to having a night game like needing more security and police-presence. People get drunk, fight, and are thrown out of Michigan games every home game, noon, 3:30, or at night. If we are doing one night game a year, I don't feel it is a major detraction. Sure, maybe keep the MSU and OSU games to the day because of rivarly fan idiocy, but a Wisconsin or PSU game at night would be pretty tame, a lot of fun, and a Michigan event that would garner the attention of the nation.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||C- It seems the night game||
It seems the night game issue has been discussed enough, but here I go anyway. The reasoning he gave for not having a night game this year was something along the lines of "I'm traditional, I like day games." If he listed logistics, TV scheduling, or any other reasonable problem for this, I'd have been cool, but listing his own personal preference as the reasoning seemed very Dave Brandon. Hackett never put his ego into his position during his time here, as far as I can tell. I'd love to see that become a tradition of our ADs.

I feel you. I remember knowing randomly that Vonn Bell would be a Buckeye just by the sound of his name. It's meaningless but sometimes I get a gut-feeling about a recruit based on nothing, but sometimes I'm right! Happened with Donnie Corley too. Don't test me on this though lol.

Very pathetic. I mean, yes, it's not the best situation, but the world is not ending. It's a tough schedule in 2018, but if we lose one and win the rest, finish 11-1, we're playoff bound. If anything, I bet Harbaugh is loving this. This will motivate players. It seems imaginable that we will have a top SOS...time to leverage that into a playoff spot. And few things top beating ND in South Bend.

I get a lot of satisfaction when we flip a PSU recruit. I know this guy has a year and half before he commits, but it would be great if he ended up going Michigan. IIRC, the Penn State coaches were heavily negative recruiting us. I believe Khaleke Hudson cited it as one of the reason he backed off PSU. Keep flipping them!
