But that being said I listened to a lot of the Bacon interview yesterday on the way home and it was good ... mostly because Bacon was talking a lot, and "Huge" (read: dipshit) hardly said anything.
In the interview, Bacon mostly re-hashes everything he's already said in the stuff Brian posted. But it was cool to hear him actually say it. Sounds like a very smart, unassuming guy who has his shit together; knows the difference between what he knows and what he thinks he knows. He sounds very credible and I'll probably believe everything I read when my copy finally gets delivered.
Hopefully this book puts some pressure on Carr/Martin/etc to speak up and explain themselves -- but they probably won't.

but it's a way for us to make ourselves stand out get some extra attention. And I'll repeat that the most important thing for us to do is win the game -- if we don't do that, it doesn't really matter what we wear. Personally I think it'd be badass if we wore those hideous things and still won -- it sends a message along the lines of "we can wear this stuff and still look awesome because we're that damn good" -- but that might be just me.
Obviously at the end of the day uniforms don't mean much to a recruit, but like I said, it's a good way to get some attention (as long as we win).
|5 years 48 weeks ago||I'm one of the people who has criticized him for leaving||
and I'm sticking with my rationale. He has A LOT of work to do to become a serviceable NBA player. In his 2 years here he displayed no outside jumper, no ability to use his left hand, and despite his ability to distribute the ball he still dribbled too much. I'M NOT SAYING HE DOESN'T HAVE THE TALENT TO BE A VERY GOOD NBA POINT GUARD, I just thought he could benefit more from starting for another year in college rather than riding a bench in the NBA (or sitting at home if there's a work stoppage).
HOWEVA, my initial criticism was also based on him being projected to go in the 2nd round. With him now being almost unanimously projected to go in the 1st, his decision is a lot easier to defend, especially since next year's draft will be loaded. Still, I think he could have really improved his draft standing (read: rookie contract) if he stayed here another year.
|5 years 48 weeks ago||I'd love to be able to refer to him as||
the "well-dressed Armani Reeves" as a throwback to the ESPN days before Chris Berman was a caricature of a caricature of himself and NFL Primetime had to be merged into SC.
|5 years 48 weeks ago||Either that||
or it's one hell of an esoteric reference.
I do love that pic of Threet though, in all it's vaingloriousness. I was at that game and I remember losing my shit once I realized he still had the ball and was quietly running through the Wisconsin defensive backfield.
|5 years 48 weeks ago||I think they're ugly as hell, but the thing is...||
... Oregon's been wearing ugly-as-shit uniforms full-time for like 7 or 8 years now, and recruits have been FLOCKING there*. I actually think this would be a good thing -- recruits don't want to go somewhere that always just does the same old shit, they want to go somewhere that's edgy and DGAF what the rest of the world thinks. Either way, the most important thing is that we win the game.
*Though possibly and hopefully for other (illegitimate) reasons
|5 years 49 weeks ago||First off, all thoughts,||
First off, all thoughts, prayers, and condolences should go to the Douglas family. This is truly a tragic time for them.
Second off ... they're all over this at EDSBS and it looks like the person at ESPN who wrote it was a UM grad (http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2011/5/12/2167778/report-aaron-douglas-alabama-lineman-found-dead-in-jacksonville#comments). So be prepared for an onslaught of scUM-bashing on the internets. Tough to disagree that Mr. Lin deserves the e-beating that he's taking but unfortunately it probably won't stop at him.
Let's keep this in perspective though -- the story here is a young man losing his life far too soon (although the ESPN Insider story is becoming even bigger, unfortunately). Again, thoughts and prayers should go to the Douglas family and the Alabama family as a whole, which has had to deal with far too much tragedy in the past few weeks.

|5 years 50 weeks ago||I do understand||
that it makes sense for them to pander to big markets. I also understand that the Lakers' flame-out was one of historic proportions and obviously deserved more attention than the Wings/Sharks game.
The content still needs to add value though. If they want to spend time giving me thoughtful insight as to why the Lakers were so bad, or where they go from here, that's fine. But hearing Magic Johnson slowly repeat obvious statements after watching several minutes of post-game press conference fluff is just Goddamn mind-numbing. SportsCenter doesn't need to be 2 fucking hours long.
I realize that I can go online (or to ESPNews, or wherever) if I just want to see highlights, but why does SC have to be so irritating to watch now? I honestly don't know who is still watching it at this point, not counting the people who leave it on and set the sleep timer.

Incorporating recruits AND throwing Mike Hart out there as our future head coach? Spicy stuff.

|5 years 50 weeks ago||Also, it's not exactly a cliche, but...||
I'm so beyond sick of EVERY GAME needing to be broken down by a panel of talking head "experts" on SportsCenter for 15 minutes. SC has become so watered down with these segments that it's pretty much intolerable to watch now -- especially because most of these experts can't even form a complete sentence.
CASE IN POINT: On last night's SportsCenter we got to hear Magic Johnson spend 5 minutes repeating himself about how the Lakers' play was embarassing (no shit Magic, thanks for that), while all of 30 seconds were spent showing Wings/Sharks highlights.

Plus if we get a huge win, there's the chance I could talk somebody into pouring it all over my head like I'm a head coach.

|6 years 5 days ago||If he leaves he's fucking retarded||
No outside shot, no left hand. Obviously he'll get drafted if he leaves, but he could improve his draft position A LOT if he sticks around for a year and just develops a perimeter shot. IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE FOR HIM TO GO TO THE NBA RIGHT NOW. I know it's easy for me to say, but he could get a hell of a lot better of a rookie contract if he sticks around one more year.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say "oh screw him he wasn't that good anyway", because he's talented as hell and I'm grateful as hell that he went to Michigan ... but I just don't think it makes sense for him to leave right now when he could be a LOTTERY PICK next year. Oh, and there's that whole lockout thing.

I understand that the Sharks have a history of underachieving in the playoffs. This Kings team hasn't exactly proven itself either though -- in fact they had a 2-1 series lead in the first round last year (can't remember who they played) and ended up losing the next 3.
I just don't see a young team like the Kings bouncing back from a collapse like that, at least not against a team as talented as the Sharks. Maybe 99% is too strong though ... I'll downgrade it to 97.34%.
|6 years 5 days ago||I'd be all over it, but I||
I'd be all over it, but I can't handle the uncertainty of not knowing when the games will be. It looks about 99% certain that we'll play the Sharks though, meaning we won't have home-ice. One of the things I like to do with these is try to figure out which exact game each picture was taken from.
BRAYLON: 2004 OSU game (ugh)
#50: This one's a little tricky but I think I got it. The Nike logo on the pants means it was pre-2008. At first I thought the opposition uniform looked like Wisconsin's, but after a closer look it might be Indiana's. I'm gonna guess the 2005 Indiana game? (I don't think it's Wisconsin because the 2006 game was on a cloudy day, and the previous time we played them in The Big House was 2002, which was our annual snowy-cloudy-cold-miserable game for that year). So this would make #50 the incomparable Jeremy Van Alstyne?
GALLON: He redshirted 2009 so this would have to be 2010. Obviously a road day game, looks cloudy. The bleachers in the background don't reveal much. It should be any of the state of Indiana road games from 2010 (ND, IU, Purdon't) but I can't tell which. I'm gonna guess IU though, because a couple fans in the background are wearing crimson.
... am I the only one who does this?

|6 years 3 weeks ago||They need to speed the damn games up||
I will always be a baseball fan, but when games can easily last 3.5 hours or more, it can be pretty tough to stay focused the whole time. I watch a lot of Tigers games but seldom watch anybody else's.
They need to add a timer between pitches, and a minimum # of batters each pitcher must face before being taken out (all the pitching changes in later innings slow the game down SO DAMN MUCH). Of course it's SACRILEGE to think this way, so it'll never happen.
I think baseball's biggest problem is that it will always be run by old purists like Bud Selig, rather than forward-thinkers. If the sport can't change with the times, then it's screwed, either sooner or later.

I'm not saying this guy is incapable of writing something good (I've read some of his good work at RBUAS), but this piece just didn't do it for me. I love Bell's and Goose Island in general, but I'm sorry, German hefeweizens absolutely blow American wheat beers out of the water, and there is no comparison. We shouldn't feel badly about that -- Germans have been making essentially the same beers for hundreds of years (mainly due to the Reinheitzgebot Purity Law) and have basically perfected what they do.
All that being said, American beers are becoming great because of their creativity and innovation, and Goose Island is as much a part of that as anybody else. Their IPA is one of my favorite IPA's out there, and their Mild Winter and Summertime are two of my favorite seasonals. I hope this buyout doesn't change anything about them other than whatever corporate behind-the-scenes bullshit is involved.

Every caller's opinion is correct, no matter how much they contradict what the last caller said, whose opinion was of course also correct. As hard as it is to believe, I'd rather listen to Valenti -- he's a dick but at least he's honest and he rips into callers when they deserve it.
For the people who are fortunate enough to not be in a listening area of this guy, I'd say he's like the poor man's Pat Caputo -- and Pat Caputo is gawd-awful, so you do the math. His only redeeming quality is that he's more a fan of UM than MSU, but he's just so damn stupid that I still can't listen to him.
|6 years 4 weeks ago||Hey||
Don't forget the "HAHAAAAAAAAAA!" at the end of that.
(Yeah, I've seen that commercial about 100 times, it's burned into my memory permanently. I'm sure I'm not the only one).
|6 years 4 weeks ago||My God||
I'm printing this off and carrying it around with me for the rest of my life.

I'm sure they'll find a way to get Michael Floyd out there for that
|6 years 4 weeks ago||Wow, first names that start with Tr get lots of love apparently||
If/when I ever have a son, I at least now know what the first 2 letters of his first name will be. Glad I got that cleared up -- that alone makes this a productive morning for me.
|6 years 4 weeks ago||Regardless of whether it's a good or bad hire...||
Mark Hollis is probably extremely proud of himself.
|6 years 4 weeks ago||Way too wordy||
I couldn't even make it to the end. I'll take the writer's, OP's, and everybody else's word for it that this guy somehow saved his wife and is awesome.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||THAT CAN BE ARRANGED.||
DONE AND DONE.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||Gotta love David Merritt||
Glad he's still close to the program, he definitely comes off as a guy who "gets it", especially for how young he still is.
Meanwhile, I wonder what Daniel Horton thinks about this team now, after his little post-Kansas-game rant earlier this season.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||He'll be fine.||
|6 years 5 weeks ago||You're right, the OP was talking about WVU's 2007 season||
We also didn't get upset in the first round of the BTT that year (2007). We beat Minnesota in the first round and then lost to OSU (our last chance for a big win) in the quarterfinals.
He/she may be confusing the 2007 BTT with the 2006 BTT -- in which case, yeah, we got upset by a dogshit Minnesota team which probably cost us a tourney bid that year.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE||
THIS IS A NON-FUCKING STORY. THERE IS NOTHING NEW HERE. ALL MORRIS HIMSELF HAS SAID IS THAT HE'S COMING BACK. THIS IS MARK SNYDER MAKING SHIT UP BECAUSE HE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ELSE TO WRITE ABOUT. SO FUCKING SICK OF THIS SHIT FROM THE FREEP.
THIS SHOULD TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Editor's note: A previous version of this story named Darius Morris as a member of MSU's team.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||Anybody who says that they know what's gonna happen||
is a goddamn liar. The NCAA does not work quickly, and when they do, it's because they want to clear the air around Cam Newton before the BCS Championship game.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||My God||
Look at how empty the stands were at Ryan Field. There is NOBODY there.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||Great thread||
God bless those kids, they played their asses off and never gave up. Let's not forget about these guys either:
I thought this team put together one of their best games of the year today -- they just came up a little short against a great Duke team. Hopefully they don't get down on themselves, and they use this as motivation in the offseason -- we're not that far away right now...
|6 years 5 weeks ago||EXCELLENT||
despite being 64 minutes late. You can't rush perfection though, of course.
The C-Wood Heisman pic vs. Manningface was the icing on the cake.

I guess he actually had a couple of strokes in the last few years ... on of which he mostly recovered from, but another one that left him partially paralyzed (not sure how I didn't even know about this until yesterday). The doctors aren't sure yet if those played a role or not, but it doesn't seem unlikely.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||RIP NATE||
I'm still a lover of old school West Coast hip hop myself (this is made easier by how shitty everything that comes out today is). Nate Dogg's contribution to that sub-genre is beyond estimation, and g-funk simply couldn't have existed without him.
"YOU KNOW IT MUST BE A SINGLE IF NATE DOGG'S SINGIN ON IT"
I've seen a lot of great tracks mentioned in this thread already, but let's not forget his (unintentionally?) hilarious opening verse to Snoop's "It Ain't No Fun (If My Homies Can't Have None)". I think that was before he figured out what the hell he was doing, haha.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||FAIL||
If OSU is knowingly committing egregious violations like playing guys who are ineligible, then their program is a sham. Which makes the rivalry a sham.
I agree that the rivalry is at its best when both programs are at the top of their game ... but if one program is shattering the rules to get to that point, then it's meaningless. I think they need to be punished severely to get it through their thick fucking skulls that they're not above the law ... unless they are, which vaguely seems disturbingly probable.
|6 years 5 weeks ago||Highly enjoyable read||
It elicits the same reaction as the documentary -- very compelling but painfully depressing at the same time. This:
"They don't have any more timeouts. That's a technical foul. We're going to lose." Our section, crazy with noise moments ago, jumping with the certainty that our guys were going to pull it out, fell slowly quiet.
... is similar to situations I've been through, but never in a game of that magnitude. I would've cried my eyes out. I almost want to now, still.
P.S. The pictures of hot chicks and high-fiving bunnies were pretty cool.

and was told that none of the sites are that great to deal with. Since none of them can take credit cards anymore, it sounds like you have to link your gambling account directly to your checking account -- and apparently there's a good chance they'll make you fax them a copy of one of your checks so they can verify all of your info (doesn't sound too appealing to me, personally).
If there's a good reputable site out there, I'd love to know what it is, but from what I heard a few months ago, it doesn't sound like there really are any...
|6 years 6 weeks ago||This could be a reason to pull for PSU too||
If they can crack the top 50 with a win over IU (and maybe another win over Wisconsin), that's 2 more top-50 wins on our resume. It would definitely put them ahead of us (if we don't make a run of our own), but it might give us a boost over some other random teams.
IDK, the more I think about this stuff the more convoluted it gets. Sometimes you don't really know who you were supposed to root for until long after the games have been played.
|6 years 6 weeks ago||Don't get me wrong, it's great to get some love, but...||
Forde's a tool tray.
|6 years 6 weeks ago||It's not a new idea||
Stoney and Wojo used to do this type of thing all the time back in the mid-to-late 90's in their heyday on WDFN. Each caller would pick the winner of one matchup. Candy bars and sitcoms were 2 of the themes I remember. I think The Detroit News even put the brackets in their paper the day of the "tournament".
So don't give Cowturd too much credit.
|6 years 6 weeks ago||I'm afraid I agree.||
If we want to go off of recent precedents, we've got USC getting hammered on one end of the spectrum, but Cam Newton getting away scot-free on the other.
I have no idea what's going to come out of this, but I just have this sick feeling that it's going to be another slap on the wrist. The only thing that evidence like this will end up doing is make me that much more pissed off when the NCAA looks the other way (again).

|6 years 7 weeks ago||Of course he does.||
If he's right he's a prophet and Sparty fans will fellate him all day Monday. If he's wrong, M fans will listen to hear him eat crow (which he won't, because he probably won't show up for work).
A lot of sports talk radio fans are useful idiots.
|6 years 7 weeks ago||Just read this for the first time||
Posts like this are the reason I'll never stop loving this site. I wish I had started my mgoblog addiction sooner so I could have actually read this back then.
"Intelligent people do not spend a goodly swath of their life pouring emotion and precious time into a contest that affects no one and changes nothing except some inky scribbles in media guides."
... is something I remember saying to someone at work the day before that game, only not nearly as eloquently.
FWIW, I was at that game and remember that very "ratatat of drums" like it was yesterday.

That doesn't just describe Deadspin, it seems to describe every other media outlet these days as well. It's actually refreshing to hear somebody at least admit that their goal is to piss people off -- I won't hold my breath waiting for the people at any newspaper, sports talk radio station, or ESPN to do the same.

You can't honestly expect to get intelligent insight from any of the talking head shows on ESPN. With the exception of maybe PTI, their first and only goal is to piss people off and stir up controversy.
I miss the days when ESPN would just show old NBA & NFL highlights shows during the morning & daytime instead of mindless dreck like 1st and Ten.
