2008 WSULS grad here. After graduating I worked at large law firm here in Michigan and now work as an AUSA. I assisted with hiring at both places and currently sit on the hiring committee at my current job.
Your question on selecting a lower ranked school over a higher ranked school should depend on where you see yourself practicing over the next few years. WSULS is an excellent school. Great professors, administrators, and your classmates will be instaters who just fell short of getting into U of M. WSULS students that do well are 1b to U of M students who opt to stay in state. MSU students still have a hard time getting in state jobs. On the down side, it just doesn't have the out of state appeal of the higher ranked school. MSU, because of its name and sports program, has much more national pull than WSU, which is indicated in its move up the rankings.
All that said, If you plan to practice in Michigan for at least five years, WSULS is an excellent option; not so much if you plan to go out of state.

Their athletic ability is their asset. It's the way out of poverty for many of these athletes. Even if you don't agree, at least try to understand the mindset.
That "something" could easily involve multiple players. The silence may be due to some of the players involved wanting to enjoy the recruiting process a bit more. Just thinking this is beyond a single commitment...
It's actually a nice place to live, especially when you work downtown. Don't get caught up in the media. There are bad neighborhoods in Detroit like every other major city, but downtown is cool and generally safe.
Gordie, I know Mike. His first cousin and his bestfriend are close friends of mine. We hung out and played ball quite a bit during undergrad, especially when Mike tranferred to msu. Mike comes from an upper-middle class family as do his first cousin and bestfried. Not to mention, Southfield was THE place to live for middle-class African Americans at that time. Jalen's point still holds true.
I had the same thought re: "WRs galore" and Lucien, and the move to an offense that emplyoys a TE instead of a 4th receiver. Hopefully they allocate his position to a D-lineman and are actually able to fill it with a talented recruit. It'll be interesting to see if we get back in on Lucien if the coaching staff determines that we won't be able to otherwise fill the slot.
Related question, I wonder if we can expect a little more of this. Vlad and Turner could both be potential re-commits. I'm sure Hoke could use a few players to fill in the gaps who also know Michigan.
BH doesn't make great money for a HC. He makes the equivalent of what Muschamp made at Texas. I don't think it would be insane at all. Who knows whether he would be able to win at SDSU. If not, he decreases the value of his stock by staying at SDSU. Serving as a DC at Michigan (and winning) puts him in a better position for a major gig, whether he's Michigan's next HC or a HC somewhere else.
Of course, I could be wrong, but that's my take on it. We're all guessing at this point.
As we have seen, Brandon likes to do things on the large scale (night game, Big Chill, HD screens). That said, don't be surprised if both Miles and Hoke come to Michigan. Miles will be HC and Hoke the DC and coach in waiting. Further, I think the new staff will be a bit of a reunion.
Hoke will come because he'll be an in-house hire whenever Miles retires and no one - assuming Michigan gets back to winning - will question his becoming the HC. This isn't San Diego State. And since Brandon is willing to pay this time around, I don't see Hoke taking much of a paycut as DC if at all. I believe F. Jackson will be retained, and maybe Soup and a few other former Michigan coaches will be brought back. Brandon, at the end of the day, will attempt to avoid the external process to find Miles' successor. Brandon is setting this up perfectly.
I also wonder if LSU's willingness to pay part of Miles' buyout has something to do with him providing notice to terminate BEFORE he actually signed the Michigan contract. If so, the reduction could be related to an agreement to leave some of his old staff (which is possible because Hoke is coming), not contact recruits once he leaves (they could still contact him), etc.

Grant Mason was in a frat - Kappa Alpha Psi. Dhani Jones was in a frat - Alpha Phi Alpha. And numerous other football players wanted to be in frats. Joining a frat isn't necessarily the easiest when going trough Spring Ball but it is not prohibited at U of M.

The M would definitely be higher on the list if it decreased the number of students it accepted. Per the rankings, Michigan admits 50% of applicants and has a higher total enrollment than each of the schools ranked ahead of it in the rankings.
Excellent story. It's amazing how much these kids go through. Conway seems to have a great attitude and understands how important it is to take advantage of second, third, and fourth chances. I'm rooting for Mr. Conway. Great addition to the Wolverine Family. I think his hardworking attitude, and ability to overcome obstacles, will translate to the field.
I took the Michigan bar exam in 2008 but hope my advice applies to any bar exam. If you've studied hard, you should feel great at this point. I felt extremely confident going in that nothing I would do during the 3-4 days before the exam would improve my score. But whether you study during the exam should depend on how comfortable you are with the material to be tested that day. You may feel like you should freshen up on the tricky details of a particular topic. Or, you may find, like I did, that you are better of resting your mind. You should probably have a really good idea what approach you should take by the weekend, based on where your score is and what topics, if any, you are having the most difficulty with. Whatever the case, don't freak out. Smile and laugh during the breaks.
If you haven't done this already, start taking 10 or more questions from each of the multi-state subjects and making your own test. This will help you stay fresh on all of the subjects as opposed to just taking questions from one topic area.
The bar exam is not as difficult as some will make you believe and it's not that different than exams you took during law school. Importantly, you'll probably find the bar exam to be easier than the questions in the PMBR and Kaplan books. I had a scaled score of 126 on the last PMBR practice test but received a 179 on the multi-state portion of the bar exam.

Your second point ignores the fact that a good player at the college level -- someone who brings value to his team and university -- could be overlooked by the NFL. Making the NFL is not a measure of a player’s value at the college level. I presented the Woodson example only to make the point that a player's financial contribution to a school can exceed the value of the school's contribution to the player by way of tuition, etc.
I honestly don't know the answers to whether college athletes should be paid and, if so, how much. A potential answer is to allot a certain percentage of profits to stipends for student-athletes. The amount each football player could receive could be determined by giving a certain amount for each game started and/or percentage of plays played. Such a formula would give starters a higher stipend than third stringers. However, I would be sure to give all players a stipend for the reasons stated in my above post (i.e. value added through star players, etc.).
Hell, another answer is to allow players to take money from whoever offers it as long as taking the money doesn't compromise the outcome of the game.

Really, the value to the institution for third stringers is the contribution they make through star players. The third stringers give their services to ensure that the star players have bodies to practice against. Third stringers may also add value through injecting a competitive spirit in other teammates, despite their lack of 5-star talent. Otherwise, the value may come through each player's contribution to the school's brand.
That wasn't my intention. I value education. Education opens doors. But is the "possible value" of a college degree comparable to the millions made? The issue is not one of no value received but of how much value. Take Charles Woodson for instance. Can we say that the value of his degree was fair in light of the money made off of his services?

Ok, maybe he knew during Spring ball but decided to hold off on the announcement to motivate his players during the Summer months. But still, Coach Hope might be up to something...

When a player is all used up, the team is free to trade of his rights or not re-sign him. Sometimes the first a player hears of being traded is via that damn scrolling ticker at the bottom of ESPN broadcast. The same holds true for athletes. When a contract allows for a player to seek better options, the player should explore his options, IMHO.

So what would drive LeBron to announcing his decision on TV when he knew he was (1) leaving Cleveland for South Beach and (2) Cleveland (the people and businesses, not to mention his menopausal ex-owner) would be hurt?
The KIDS! What many have loss in this whole thing is that LeBron used his celebrity to give to the Boys and Girls Club. The University of Phoenix donated several scholarships and a half million dollars. LeBron noted that all of the proceeds from advertisement were given to the Boys and Girls Club. You may not agree that it was tactful, but you have to admit that his lack of tact (if you see as such) was for a very good cause.
Now as for the build-up and secrecy surrounding the decision…You have to imagine that ESPN demanded that LBJ keep his decision a secret to the very last minute. How else would they reap the benefits of all the LBJ coverage? The Nielsen ratings were through the roof because of - yes, you guessed it, the build up! He couldn't tell Cleveland and risk the team releasing a statement before "The Decision" aired.
I believe the whole thing was done for a very good cause. But I admit, LBJ and ESPN should have done a better job of gauging how fans would react to maintain LBJ’s brand.
