Coaches' timeouts are worse. Basketball teams should get one, full stop.

But I'm sorry, if you've raised a kid that does that, you've done something right.

our outdated "This is Michigan" expectations. I'm all for appreciating this success; not sure hanging all the jerseys from the rafters is necessary, with the exception of Burke -- two years or not, winning POY and leading team to the Finals is a big deal historically, new expectations or not.

One can easily criticize over-signing WITHOUT lauding scholarship limits.
The exact same view could be taken to Bama paying players. "Bullshit. Restrictions on extra benefits to players are designed to limit student's compensation in the name of competitive balnace for those schools that can't afford it. Criticizing giving Bama players BMWs while lauding restrictions on extra benefits is hypocritical."
Shorter version of the editor's response: "Fuck you. Roll Tide."
I don't laud scholarship caps. But if such caps exist, taking advantage of a 17/18 yo's ego and feelings of inconvincability all while knowing there's a 10%+ chance you're going to give him the boot down the line is straight up dick.

But your post is half obvious, half overstated. Yes, he has to improve. That statement applies to 100 % of rookies/young players.
But stick around the league? If Burke doesn't improve at all, he will have a 10 yr career as a lower level starter or backup. PG is currently very thin in the league, and Burke's current skillset is solid.

|8 weeks 1 day ago||But comparing MLB regular season to CFB/CBB regular season||
Isn't an apples to apples comparison.
Hell, I'm a diehard Tigers fan, but how much do I care about every TIGERS regular season series? Admittedly, not a ton at times.
MLB regular season is just generally diluted, but saying outsiders only care about BoSox-NYY in the playoffs isn't really a damning statement.
In other words, your comment seems to suggest less that people don't care about BoSox-NYY and more that you can't really care about MLB rivalries because of how many games are played. Honestly, that's fair, but I also think it's more fair to compare rarer rivalry contests (CFB; typically only one game per year; CBB; typically only 2 games per year, at most 4 [conference tourney + outside chance at NCAA tourney game, too]) to MLB playoffs than every MLB contest. In that regard, BoSox-NYY holds up well, I think.
Note: I fucking hate both Boston and NY. But hard to argue that their rivalry isn't compelling.

Man, Ace. What a pandora's box-opening a-hole, AM I RIGHT GUYS?
/negged to death.

I hear you. Obviously you have more limited possessions in football. I guess I was thinking that a rash of missed early FTs would alter one's style a bit (more pressing, etc.), but fuck it, I don't argue with math. Particularly math from 2004, when this debate was probably relevant.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||"Not even close?"||
If I've learned anything about block/charge over the past 20 years, it's that every single one is close depending on the officials. That was close.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||FTs early v. late||
FTs late do hurt more ("all worth 1 point"), right? Isn't it similar to the reasoning in why one goes for 2 earlier than later? Because the miss/make informs your strategy when you have more time to alter said strategy?
Great post. Just asking.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Or maaaayyybbbeee||
It means we evaluate a man in full? That treating a guy decently, who, regardless of his salary, seemed like a decent guy, isn't fake but, um, normal?
That latter point is so fucking played out. Where is the line drawn? Be a dick to a coach if he fails because he didn't just fail but got PAID A LOT. Be a dick if a pro player fails because he failed and he gets PAID A LOT. Be a dick to a college player if he fails because he failed and HE GETS PAID A SCHOLARSHIP, and on and on.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||Good call.||
This board is just losing it's internet toughness these days, huh?
|8 weeks 5 days ago||I never understand the "but he got paid" line, which is||
seemingly intended to undermine the "thanks for your hard work" comment.
If you think effort is always lock-step with every dollar paid in income, well, never mind. You know that's not the case. Obviously I don't know how hard Borges worked, but to the extent that some have perceived it to be "very," it's not tossed aside because he was well-compensated.
Borges seems like a good guy who got paid a lot by the program and worked hard; ultimately he wasn't successful. Best of luck to him, and I'm psyched about the new hire.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||I always find that interesting||
"If he wasn't on our team, everyone would agree he's a punk."
So if we didn't get to know him a bit over the course of 4 years, we'd slap a lazy, dickish label on him from our couches?
Your statement is probably right -- if he wasn't on our team, we'd probably think he was a punk. But that doesn't support that he's a punk; it supports that sports fans can be smug assholes that draw conclusions based about kids with virtually nothing to back it up.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||True, but||
Denard ain't walking back through that door. And in college, you're never guaranteed to have an experienced line (injuries, wash-out, etc.). OC's job isn't limited to succeeding with 5 RS Srs on the OL and a once in a lifetime offensive weapon.

"Hate" DB because he is unable to ruthlessly squeeze every drop of profit out of the UM football program...

Based on the fact that you're more impressed than you expected, sounds like you expected him to run backwards on every carry or set the ball on fire the second he got on the field.

Frankly, they're a ref-jobbing away from the BCS championship game.
But at least an announcer said "little brother."
|15 weeks 4 days ago||My brain says||
UMBB (and my brain also says, "it's not even close"), but here's the thing about UMFB... I HATE watching them this season. It's like slamming your head against the wall (1st down -1 run, 2nd down sack, 3rd down incomplete, PUNT, lather, rinse, repeat)... and yet, while I've walked away from the TV for long stretches of Nebraska/NU/Akron and Penn State... my heart is still always focused on UMFB.
Damn you, Borges.
I will say, UMBB is a really, really nice break. Particularly given that non-conference BB games aren't as crucial (i.e., a loss at ISU doesn't really matter), and I'm full-on expecting this team to have some kinks that it takes a few months to work through.
|15 weeks 4 days ago||Yes: more Green and Smith,||
Yes: more Green and Smith, less Fitz.
No: I think Bosch remains
Neither. More of the same. Let's say "piddling"
Final Score: Iowa 20 UM 13
I hate to be so negative, but these last three years on the road have been dreadful (Maybe Illinois in 2011 was a good game? Even that NU win in 2011 was ugly for 3 quarters). Uconn, PSU, MSU, NU... terrible offensive games this year.
If we had some big play burst, I'd feel a bit better, but Iowa is pretty good at keeping plays in front of them, and I just don't see us consistently moving the chains enough to put together multiple 8-12 play TD drives.
Hope I'm wrong, and would love a couple of forced TOs.
|16 weeks 4 days ago||I can't tell if I'm being a negative Michigan fan or what||
I don't see us winning either NW or Iowa. Our road efforts have been consistently bad the past few years, and each game since ND (except maybe Minny) has trended us to a worse, and worse state. I'll be really surprised if we win tomorrow. Against a team currently 0-5 in conference play.
|16 weeks 4 days ago||Agreed.||
We'll find out soon enough, but hard to believe MM goes from not doing contact drills to a road game in November.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||Yup. Same.||
I'm not buying next year. Have had alum season tickets 7 years in a row (after 7 undergrad/grad season tickets), but this has gotten absurd.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||I had the same reaction||
No thanks, DB, I'll go ahead and use Stubhub to buy my tickets ... rather than using Stubhub to sell my tickets at a 50% discount for games I can't attend.
