Niyo was my hallmate in Markley (4th Frost) freshman year 1989-90.

Fitzgerald's reaction at the left edge of the frame is pure gold. I wish the gif went longer as I think the fist pump quickly turned into two arms outstretched downward pleading "WHAT JUST HAPPENED."
As it stands, it looks like spectacular sportsmanship as he celebrates Lewis's feat.

During the radio broadcast/audio streeming of the Utah game, Dierdorf referenced Michigan as "Big Blue." It struck my ears as odd, too; but I think it is seeping into common usage.
|22 weeks 1 day ago||thanks||
Wow. Didn't expect a response from the master. On behalf of me and, I'm sure, countless others, thanks for your fantastic contribution to the Michigan football experience (assuming this is really you).
Beckmann's radio call took over for the in-person PA experience when my visits became less frequent. As my OP perhaps betrayed, I don't get to the Big House very often these days to hear the call live. Two degrees and 25 years of season tickets are both in the rear view mirror.
Someday I'll have to explain to my oldest son that his first Michigan game experience (at less than six months old) was the season opener on 9/1/2007. As I recall, they cancelled the game that day. I wonder what would have happened?
|22 weeks 1 day ago||not a shot at Brandstatter||
My OP wasn't intended as a personal shot at Brandstatter. He's being asked to do something that is very difficult and that he's never done before. His background and love of all things Michigan are great for color, but for play-by-play, you often need to very quickly convey who/what/where/when without extra words that don't address those issues. That doesn't play to his strengths. Cadence and style get bonus points, but I'd settle for knowing what happened on a given play. I'd be awful at it.
At times last year I could only gauge what happened by the degree of excitement or dejection in his voice as he said words that did not really describe the action for someone who wasn't watching it happen.

Its the same source audio they stream. So, for all of you whippersnappers, this affects the interwebs, too. Yes, I'm old.

There may be some insider snark that went over my head, but I think these are just typos in the post (which poked fun at "Adidas" v. "adidas" copy errors).
|30 weeks 4 days ago||Warrior||
I believe that Warrior, while still headquartered in MI, is now a subsidiary of New Balance (not kidding). If so, that's not going to fly with the swoosh.
|35 weeks 2 days ago||ump conversation||
I understood the mic'd ump conversation to be something along the lines of:
Third base up who made the call: "Hutch was asking for obstruction, but I did not have obstruction. Did you have obstruction?"
Home plate ump: "I did not have obstruction."
First base ump: "I did not have obstruction."
I didn't hear any of the umps indicate they saw it as obstruction (all wrong, but all in agreement). Did I miss that or is the summary in the post off? I've already erased it from the DVR.
On the "Its great. . . to be. . ." chant, I was an undergrad from '89-'93 and the first time I heard it at M was after the '97 OSU football game.

So today's the first day after April for IU hoops?
I'll see myself out.
|41 weeks 2 days ago||I don't have the answer||
I don't have the answer either, but I just don't see how the helmet-with-no-facemask could work today.
|41 weeks 2 days ago||Crown = top||
It's pretty common to see a defender drop his head and light someone up with the very top of the helmet--the part that would still be there if the facemask was removed. I know that is what we/they are trying to get out of the game, but it just seems like allowing the possibility of someone taking a shot like that to the bare face is a nonstarter.
|41 weeks 2 days ago||Remove face masks?||
I don't get the argument to remove the face masks, but keep the helmet. Doesn't that mean the other guy is going to use his helmet to smash your now unprotected face?

Based on this response alone, I think you need to move the Star Wars picture higher in your chart.

Q: First wolverine to catch a TD pass from Rudock?
|49 weeks 3 days ago||Ed Kengerski||
He was the sports guy for the CBS affiliate in Kalamazoo (WWMT-3) for quite a while. Is he now at U if M full time? Is he in addition to, or in place of, Doug Karsch?

He's ecstatic about the new situation.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Free pizza?||
What is this "free" you speak of?
|1 year 45 weeks ago||Not sure||
I've erased the recording, but I thought it was one more syllable than that. "City" was the only thing I could come up with.
|1 year 45 weeks ago||Angry Morgan||
It was definitely an interaction with a manager - not a coach or McGary - that was picked up on TV. I rewound several times to try to figure it out, but it was too brief of a shot to get the context. The manager's expression instantly went from a celebratory "you da man" to an anxious "please don't hurt me, Mr. Morgan."

Funny reaction by the scoring official in the background during the handshake line. Right after Beilein shakes hands with the second assistant after Painter.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||payback for late hit||
The defender that Butt demolished on the long Funchess run (second picture of the post) is the same guy who had received a personal foul for hitting Gardner late in the endzone. The television coverage had a pretty good view of the block, too.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||Bill Self's expression||
Self's expression said it all when he signaled that he wanted a "full" timeout after Burke hit the bomb at the end of regulation. It looked like he was wondering if the refs had something longer than a full timeout to offer. Maybe an intermission? A power outage? An adjournment?
|2 years 45 weeks ago||bench order||
I think the "stumbling white guy dance" is Bielfeldt. He seems taller than the guy to his left (camera's right), who I think is Vogrich.
It's grainy, but I'd put the order, left to right, as: Horford, LeVert, Stauskas (sans yellow top), Morgan, Bielfeldt, Vogrich, McLimans, Bartelstein, Akunne (not as demonstrative), Person.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||McGary Smash alternate ending||
On the McGary Smash play, I was hoping Trey would dump it down to McGary on the roll. At Trey's release, McGary is at about the free throw line, building a head of steam to the rim. As McGary looks back to see if the pass is coming, no one else is in the paint and the only defender even close (i) is flat footed and (ii) just saw what McGary did to the other guy.
No problem with Trey taking the shot himself, but the alternate ending had some potential too.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||shorts slightly baggier||
You could have made shorts for the whole 1989 team from the material used in a single pair of the "throwback" shorts.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||off-center numbers||
My recollection is that the NCAA made a rule change around 1990 that prohibited off-center numbering and we changed the jerseys to comply with that new rule. Missouri, and perhaps others, also had an off-center design that was similarly nixed. I don't know the current status of that rule or (if it still exists) whether a waiver can be obtained for a "thowback" game. Others have indicated that we have used the throwback look recently, but I can't remember such an instance (not saying it didn't happen).

On the Toussaint TD that put us up 20-7, I got a chuckle at Hemingway doing his Lewan impersonation on the DB at the top of the screen.

Is there version of, or link to, the video in a format that an iPhone can deal with? I'm getting nothing on the app and web versions of the blog. Sorry if my question betrays a lack of tech savvy.
|4 years 38 weeks ago||Walter Smith 1994||
One of my favorite all time moments was Walter Smith's 1994 finale. Details fade with the years, so some of you may need to correct or supplement my memory, but my recollection is that he blew his knee out just before (or at the beginning of) his senior year. He wasn't really an NFL prospect, so that was the end of the line football-wise. He was elected captain and lead the team out of the tunnel and participated in coin-flips on crutches through the year.
By the end of the season, he had rehabbed to the point that he could lead the team out without crutches for the last home game (Minnesota). With the game in hand, Lloyd sent him out for a play in the fourth quarter. Everyone who had followed the story knew what was about to happen. He lined up as wide as possible. At the snap, he took one step forward and the QB (Collins?) hit him with an easy ball so he could fall out of bounds (right in front of the student section) before the DB got there. He needed help to get up, but made it into the record books for his senior season.
I've been a season ticket holder since 1989, when I was a freshman, and have been blessed to see many very special moments -- and a few heartbreaking ones too -- but that would be near the top for me. Not an particularly significant "football" moment, but an awesome "life" moment. For me, every bit as moving as the Mealer walk for me (taking nothing away from that).
