Nitpick re: Martin

Tony Dungy did not retire until after the 2008 season so he would have been in the middle of a 13-3 season during the clown show. Doesn't really affect the overall picture of Martin during the fiasco, but he wasn't a broadcaster and I doubt he was answering Martin's call at the time.

I love that there is now a tag for 'the ugly organ'.

Thanks for reminding me why I stopped reading this board.

I am not suggesting scrap them all

But momentum of bowl wins is overrated, and I am just questioning if additional time under a lame duck defensive staff is more productive than that time under the new defensive regime.

He isn't the only problem

But if you are giving a DC full control, which they should, don't you think we could get someone better than GERG?

If Hagelin == hockey Denard

Can we start calling Denard the Football Bork?

Sad, but

at least hasn't lost his starting job at MSU...

LeBron a moron?

Why would LeBron want to stay in Cleveland and put career in the hands of a college coach?  This just doesn't make any sense.  And it will be extremely annoying when Izzo stays and the Sparty faithful play the "he turned down $30M/LeBron to stay at MSU" card.

Also, Forde can eat a bag of dicks.

100 cocktails to you, sir

You certainly earned them.

squeezed?

This was the 1st game I was able to catch out here on the West Coast - do they typically take so many called 3rd strikes?  It looked like they were getting squeezed a bit, especially the called 3rd Biondi took in the 8th w/ runners on 2nd and 3rd.  That pitch looked no better than the ball 4 that walked in the tying run in the bottom of the 8th.  That said, when you leave 14 guys on you had plenty of chances to get more than 3.

2009 updated

FYI - the 2009 #s in the table above only represent the totals thru the Illinois game.  Including the last 3 games they are:

Offense - 47 - 195 - 59%

Defense - 44 - 210 - 68%

The defense only "held" Pur/Wisc/OSU to 1 fg in 10 trips the last 3 games (9 TDs) to bring the efficiency down considerably.  The offense struggled as well.

Hat Guy will always get a pass from me simply based on the amount of enjoyment he has provided via FJM.  I miss those guys.

I doubt he is ignorant

He is an MSU alum, and has covered MSU sports for a couple decades.  My guess is that as an alum, he has just fallen for MD's reputation as no-nonsense, strict coach, as most everyone has.  Somehow MD has gotten as much attention for punishing a player for not wearing a tie as he has for his role in these brawls.

What are you looking for?

RCMB does a good job of coming up w/ info.  They were the ones that outed the new logo and got it shelved.  You have sift thru a ton bs (emotocons, scUM, Meatchicken, general idiocy, etc) to get to it.  It just isn't worth it.  Maybe I am just getting older, but even their epic meltdowns don't seem as much fun anymore.

If you want solid analysis, KJ does a great job at The Only Colors.  Check out his post after the Butler game of possibly the only rational Spartan fan that didn't lose his sh*t after the non-call at the end of the game.  http://www.theonlycolors.com/2010/4/7/1410257/on-officiating

Lost confidence

This is an inconsistent team that has lost its confidence. How is playing in the CBI going to help? Do you really think that they will stay consistent enough to win it? Remember, this is a team that lost to Indiana, Penn State, twice to NW, needed OT to win at Iowa, ect. This team needs time away from games to build confidence back, not losing in the 2nd round to S. Florida.

You ain't lying

Small school indeed. I knew quite a few kids from All Saints, including my roommate at UM. I went to BC Central '98. We were a football powerhouse in the 50s-70s. Not so much anymore, unless you consider Alex Mitchell a powerhouse.

From an old college roommate

My initials are TB. A roommate that I lived w/ on Dewey thought my last name was Bliggins. Which, other than starting w/ 'B', isn't even close to my last name. So that stuck as a nickname.

The new logo looks like a

The new logo looks like a comic book rendition. I think if they told no one of the change very few people would have even noticed. Some MSU fans I know are losing their minds about this, though.

The biggest risk involved w/

The biggest risk involved w/ bringing Kiffin in is that they will have some sanctions of indeterminable strength, which will probably include some sort of probation. And the guy you hire racked up numerous secondary violations in just over 1 year at Tennessee? He should have excellent coordinators around him while he is there to not mess up the product on the field, it is getting into more trouble off the field that has a better chance of derailing this train.

Richard never played baseball

Richard never played baseball until he left the football team. He saw the writing on the wall that he would never pass Henne on the depth chart and went to the baseball team.

Regardless of the coaching

Regardless of the coaching situation, this was not surprising as Jimmah was an extremely old Jr.

The B12 was down this year.

The B12 was down this year. Cincy's best 2 wins were at Pitt and at Or State. That is better than Texas' best 2 wins (at Ok State and vs Okla). The rest is a wash, imo.

I wanted that last second off the clock so badly just to see the meltdown Texas fans would have had. That would have been epic.

They should have rolled that

They should have rolled that last second on general principle.

A better Tight End than Mallett, though?

How about the State News

How about the State News going all FOIA on the athletic department? Certainly can't accuse them of having Carty or Rosenberg on the payroll.

More of a perception problem

Winston was suspended at the end of 08 and in jail in 09. I am sure that MD had talked w/ Winston regarding getting a 2nd chance. So the issue of letting him on the team w/in hours of his release is simply a black eye in public perception. It would have benefitted him if he would have, gulp, gone the JLS route w/ Smoker. Make him "prove" himself (to the team, coaches, media, ect) before officially letting him back on the team.

I am not against giving 2nd chances. MD just happened to get burned on this one as he did realize that Winston has some major issues. Not that I have any sympathy for MD...

It won't be necessary

If TT plays MSU that horrible secondary is going to get shredded for 500+ yds. That will be all the humiliation they need.

Not a big loss...

Not a big loss...

Didn't Ray and Anderson

Didn't Ray and Anderson transfer because Winston/Caper/Baker passed them on the depth chart?

Persona

I really think that RR's "WV aw shucks" hurts him the most when it comes to perception and portrayal in the media. If you are straight faced and serious, it appears that you can get away with much more in the media. Just look at what Ferentz has gotten away with the last couple of years at Iowa.

Disagree

While I agree that Buzz and Grant are excellent young coaches, I think it is overreaching to say that JB was outcoached this weekend. The issues this weekend were poor shooting and poor defense. The shooting will come since very few of the misses were due to poor shot selection. The defense will be a bit trickier as they are seeing how much they miss CJ Lee on that side of the ball.

I think in this situation the

I think in this situation the numbers are all you need if you watched the game. The 3s just aren't falling right now. For the most part the low 3pt % is simply due to open looks not falling. It's not like all of these 3s are forced w/ a hand in the face. Most of them are coming w/in the offense, but they just aren't falling. When you are a POT it is difficult to get away w/ 20-30% 3pt shooting.

The sentiment is still the

The sentiment is still the same. OSU was not going to let Pryor take a 5- or 7-step drop and look for someone in the endzone. They planned on throwing a safe swing pass to hope Herron could turn it into a TD. An agressive blitz there leaves less defenders to make a play there.

Fitz and Mouton

Fitzgerald was a 4*/top 150 to everyone.
http://mgoblog.com/content/2008-recruiting-linebackers-and-defensive-li…

And Mouton was a 4* safety. There was reason to believe that he may end up at OLB, but it wasn't a foregone conclusion.

(edit for better linky for Fitz)

It was a perfect playcall by

It was a perfect playcall by Tressell, but not a surprising one. GERG has shown a tendency to blitz in the redzone, which Tressell I am sure has scouted. The worst part is that in Pryor had already thrown a pick in the 2nd half, so the chances of Tressell calling something other than a screen or QB draw were extremely small. So the all-out blitz played right into Tressell's conservative nature.

You hit it w/ the oline

You hit it w/ the oline comment. Minor was the only RB that could consistently get the tough yards, but next year w/ a better oline, as well as more experienced QBs, there will be bigger running lanes. My fear w/ Shaw is that he may be injury prone like Minor/Brown. Regardless, w/ him, Smith, Toussaint, and the incoming freshmen I think we will be just fine.
