But, I don't think they're replacing Dirks with Davis. They're going to platoon them. Davis hits lefties far better than righties, and provides significant speed on the basepaths and steal potential. If Dirks can be more the player we saw in 2012, I actually really like this platoon.

I would have liked to see them add another big bat (particularly Choo), but it's clear they didn't want to take on anymore large contracts at the moment. However, theyr'e revamping the roster away from a power-hitting lineup, to one with better defense, more speed and better baserunning. That suites CoPa better than the more stationary lineup they had before.
But to address your arguments... Kinsler/Infante is not a wash. Infante had a career year (or clsoe to it) last season. He has a career .721 OPS and has hit more than 15 HRs once in 12 seasons. Kinsler has a career .804 OPS and has hit over 30 HRs twice. In fact he has over twice as many career HRs (156) than Infante (74), in four fewer seasons. He also steals far more bases than Infante. Yes, Kinsler has had a down couple of yaers, but even then his numbers are better than Infante's (with the exception of last year). I like Infante a lot, but to argue that he was anything other than an average 2B offensively is silly.
Peralta is certainly a loss offensively, but I think a lot of Tigers fans overrate his 2011 and forget just how dysmal he was in 2012. He bounced back in 2013, but we're looking at a guy with a career .755 OPS and some nice pop for a SS. While not a defensive liability, he was losing significant range as he got into his 30s. Iglesias is a huge defensive upgrade over him, and still an extremely young and raw hitter.
The loss of Fielder's power certainly hurts, but hopefully it can be made up for with the improvements in defense and speed. This team is built completely differentlly than the Tigers of the past. They're going to be manufacturing a lot more runs, and hopefully the defense will save a lot of runs, too. I thikn Porcello will particularly be helped by it.
They really need to sign a few more arms for the bullpen, though. I'm hoping for Jesse Crain, at least.

First off, I've visted this site almost everyday for going on seven years now (not sure what that says about me), and I wanted to thank Brian and everyone else on the site for their hard work. I tend to post sporadically, but I'd been completely turned off to it this season because of the constant bitching.
I welcome the comment moderation system back wholeheartedly, but do I agree that if it's possible, changing the greyed out commment threshhold to soemthing like -3 or -5 would help pointless negging hiding posts. I found that to be an annoying phenomenon back when we had moderation.

Am I missing something here? Since when has there hatred for Minnesota among the Michigan fanbase? Maybe in hockey, I suppose, but as far as Big Ten teams go, I've always sort of liked them.

Roto is by far the better game. It's much more reflective of the quality of your team, whereas head-to-head is far more random. I'm not sure what rules you're using, but many (if not most) roto leagues don't have a set amount of players you can use per week.

I started coming to the site sometime in 2005 or 2006 while I was in High School. I can't remember if one of my friends told me about it, or if we both found it independently and just talked about it a lot.
|1 year 3 days ago||Perhaps I didn't make myself||
Perhaps I didn't make myself full clear, but dismissing my comment as "bull" without acknowleding that I have any point is ridiculous. I don't disagree that there is a place for Amerindian team names or imagery in sports and I never said I did. But, when most of these names were created, it certainly was not to honor the tribes in any genuine way. It the very best it was a reinforcement of the trope of the noble savage.
I do think it's possible to rescue names like Seminoles, Huron, Chippewas from this fate by doing just as you said: embracing the tradition. However, it's also important to reflect on the ways that these names have reinforced negative stereotypes in the past.
The fact is that people using these images are misrepresenting them, most egregiously the Redskins and Cleveland Indians.
|1 year 3 days ago||Because Americans/Colonials||
Because Americans/Colonials didn't push the Vikings off their land, fight brutal wars against them when they tried to resist, force them onto reservations and generally discriminate against them for hundreds of years. The Vikings are a representative of the cultural heritage of the people of Minnesota. Native American symbols are not truly representative of the cultural heritage of these areas. They were appropriated by Americans in an extremely disrespectful fashion and at a time when Amerindians still faced intense discrimination and Americanization attempts.
These images reinforce the worst stereotypes about Amerindians that we have been spouting off for centuries. The only reason why it doesn't seem to matter so much anymore is that because of of the actions of colonial powers and the US governments, Amerindians make up such a small part of our population.
The fact that people constantly compare the situation to that of the Fighting Irish or the Vikings is proof that a huge number of Americans still don't get it. I for one believe that there is a way to keep some of these names as a way of honoring Native Americans, their history and continuing to move beyond our past. FSU is a good example. The Redskins and Chief Wahoo show how far we still have to go.

No, it doesn't say that Damon Webb or Chance Stewart will be on campus, but it heavily implies it. But, you're right... it's going to be Harris, Marshall and McDowell. That paragraph was just terribly worded.

My interpretation of the phrase was that Speight's reaction to the praise was a humble one, that he was happy about the praise, but felt he couldn't possibly be in the top three with all the other great QBs in the nation.

Yeah, it's a ridiculous percentage, but no one is saying that Florida would win 41.7% of the time. It's based on a statistical methodology that's helpful as a guide, but can only be a guide, given the imperfection of the stats put into it.

I think I know what Brian is getting at with the recaps of our previous January 27ths, but it was a bit unclear. Yes, things looked dire for us in 2011 compared to now, but we that was the beginning of an 8-3 run that would have us in the tourney with a blowout win against Tennessee and a heartbreaking loss to Duke. It was a pretty damn good year.
But, we're light years away from that 8-seed underdog now.

Not sure why you're being so insistent on a incorrect pronunciation, but in German O's are definitely not pronounced like U's. It would be Broh-ners or something along those lines, I'm not exactly the best with phonetic spelling. See: schon, vor, holen, tot, boren, etc.
While I'm certainly not fluent, I've been studying German for many years and I'm currently in Bremen studying. I could throw a rock and hit a native speaker to ask them the exact pronunciation if you'd like.
