You are correct. There was a huge study done in the last decade where a bunch of English soccer refs came to the US to try and figure out why we aren't better at the sport. One of their major conclusions was that US refs at every level (the study mostly looked at soccer refs but im sure it applies to other sports as well) treat fouls differently depending on the size disparity between the two parties involved. Ie, calling the Nix incident a flagrant while not calling the Watford foul. In soccer, the result is that bigger, stronger, more athletic players get "Harrison Bergeron'd" and their development can be hindered.

The uniforms weren't as atrocious as our defense. So theres that...

Bring soccer's "advantage" rule into basketball. ie. if someone commits a reach in or something dumb in the last 30 seconds, but the offensive team maintains possession of the ball, let the team maintain play. Or perhaps give the team the option to use their bonus 1 and 1 free throws or just take an inbound pass.

I'm really glad that the writers decided to take make such drastic plot changes compared to the comics. I can't watch Game of Thrones because its essentially the same plot, just not done nearly as well as the books. Walking Dead is keeping me interested with all the differences and I don't ever think "hey that's OT what happens!" It's a great take on adapting the series IMO.

It certainly was a lot of posturing. But I think they need these types of episodes to maintain realism and do some character development. It wasn't great, but I'd rather have episodes like this than just a weekly zombie brawl. It's harsh, but studs-up tackles are essentially always red card offenses. They fall under "serious foul play" and aren't really subjective in nature. If you're going to call a penalty on Ibra in that last minute, it's going to be a red. The only time you'll see a studs-up challenge get a yellow card is if the challenge was very close to the ball. Ibra was miles from connecting with the ball. I'm not surprised he got a red, he's the same player who kicked multiple teammates in the head at AC Milan (apparently for fun... Once he kicked a teammate in the head during a TV interview). He has got to be more disciplined in his challenges. Ultimately I still think PsG goes through.

Dempsey, Altidore, and Bradley have played together for years now. Regardless, lack of familiarity has nothing to do with poor first touches. It has more to do with the field, but these are professional soccer players. You'd like to think they could cope with field conditions. All that said, the Honduras defense looks pretty bad, I think we score at least one today.

I don't understand how the WSJ can say there's no evidence of a link between violent head collisions and CTE. The Boston University study linked by Brown Bear is peer reviewed and quite conclusive.

But I'm not surprised. The WSJ has slightly more credibility than the National Enquirerer. The entire paper is an op. Ed. Piece.

Seems to me that we have had the biggest variance at the safety position. Jordan Kovacs was rated significantly below pretty much all of the safeties we've had over the past decade and has definitively been the biggest contributor of the whole lot.

I don't know what formula they used but your point about them projecting Indiana to win the big ten by a slight margin could be a culprit, it could be exponentiating the small difference between the two teams unfairly. In a sense they could be using the same data point multiple times which would result in falsely high confidence?

That article references a study published in a peer-reviewed medical journal that concluded that contact sports (specifically football) create a distinct and predictable pattern of CTE.
