5 days 8 hours ago I almost hope we get Devin

I almost hope we get Devin Gardner the pretty dang good and not Devin Gardner the monster, because the monster enters the draft and it would be nice for Morris to get another year of learning under his belt before he has to step in.

1 week 6 hours ago For anyone local to DC, I

For anyone local to DC, I plan on catching his first game of the year on August 30th as long as he doesn't commit to another school before then. If anyone would like to join me it would be cool to have a Michigan representation of sorts/help with scouting.

1 week 11 hours ago Seriously, you can find it

Seriously, you can find it for like $8-$10 a year. It's too ridiculous of a deal to not do it.

1 week 5 days ago From what I could find, some

From what I could find, some of the early lines last year were

Michigan vs Alabama (-12)
Michigan at Notre Dame (-1)
Michigan State at Michigan (-6)
Michigan at Nebraska (+2)
Michigan at Ohio State (+2)

Those were released on June 11th last year, and you would have won betting against Michigan for every one of those games. I'm guessing the year before it would have been the exact opposite.

1 week 5 days ago Agreed on the MSU game, but

Agreed on the MSU game, but if that Northwestern game doesn't terrify you then you're a bolder man (or woman) than I. They had us dead to rights last year, Kain Colter does a really good job running that offense, and Venric Mark was a big threat as a freshman and you can only assume he's going to get better. Win or lose, that game is going to be very, very frustrating to watch.

2 weeks 2 days ago Great Article Brian

What's the most disappointing about this, in my opinion, is the way that these Southern programs have been able to manipulate perception better than the Big Ten teams. Butch Jones and Mark Stoops both took over absolutely terrible teams and they've both done a better job selling, "We may be terrible right now, but we're about to turn this ship around, and you can come play in the shiny, wonderful, best-conference SEC if you come here" than Michigan State or Nebraska has been able to parlay fairly recent Big Ten successes into results on the recruiting trail. Which means that it's gotten to the point where terrible SEC is better than good to middling Big Ten. That's really, really bad.

2 weeks 2 days ago It Does Matter

The problem is that if you're not beating good teams, public perception of your skill level becomes subject to debate. To this day we don't ultimately know how good some of Boise State's teams were because they were never given the opportunity to prove whether or not they were national championship caliber teams. Due to a greater national presence of college football, the Big Ten name is only going to carry you so far, and if you're not beating a good handful of very good to elite teams, you're not going to get the same post-season opportunities as others.

3 weeks 6 days ago IMO, that's the ideal

IMO, that's the ideal scenario. You rarely want to start true freshman, but you don't really want to start a sophomore without any experience either. The nickel seems like a great way to get both of them on the field for a good number of snaps and take advantage of their otherworldly athleticism, while preparing them for their fulltime safety or cornerback position in the future. And as you mentioned, with Gordon and Taylor graduating when they are, it would really work out.

That being said, someone's going to break their tibia or something because it's football, rendering all of this thought process moot.

4 weeks 3 hours ago 2012 Rivals: OH: 4 top 100

2012 Rivals:
OH: 4 top 100 and 14 top 247
MI: 0 top 100 and 7 top 247
IL: 1 top 100 and 6 top 247

2013 Rivals:
OH: 3 top 100 and 14 top 247
MI: 2 top 100 and 5 top 247
IL: 3 top 100 and 5 top 247

I said there were some caveats, but I do think it's still a downward trend. All of these sites do have dedicated midwest scouting guys, so I don't necessarily think it's a scouting issue. More guys always get discovered, but you players from all over move up and down throughout the process, not just Midwest guys.

4 weeks 3 hours ago Interesting Note

So I was taking a peek through these and it seemed to me like the rankings were light on Midwestern prospects. Caveats apply obviously (these are not final rankings, this is just one sites opinion, etc.), but that definitely seems to be the case and it would seem to signal that the rust belt/sun belt trend is deepening.

For the three major midwestern states, the ones that Michigan draws upon most heavily at least, the "High blue chip talent" is falling.

2008 Rivals Rankings:
OH: 5 top 100 players and 16 top 247
MI: 4 top 100 players and 7 top 247
IL: 2 top 100 players and 5 top 247

2009 Rivals Rankings:
OH: 3 top 100 players and 14 top 247
MI: 2 top 100 players and 6 top 247
IL: 2 top 100 players and 6 top 247

2015 247 Sports Rankings:
OH: 4 top 100 players and 10 top 247
MI: 1 top 100 player and 4 top 247
IL: 2 top 100 players and 4 top 247

This may not seem like a lot, but I think it does have some pretty major ramifications for the Big Ten and Michigan. Michigan is going to have to dig deeper down south to get their talent, which is why I think you're seeing them hit a more vulnerable place like Virginia so hard. The Big Ten is going to be fighting for fewer and fewer scraps as well. There's a lot more to be said, maybe I'll throw together a diary on this if people would be interested.

4 weeks 1 day ago The opinion on Michigan's

The opinion on Michigan's class thus far could not be any greater when comparing Rivals and ESPN. Strange, very strange.

4 weeks 5 days ago Yes, he is a guard, but

Yes, he is a guard, but Michigan hasn't stopped recruiting him despite only taking 3 OL prospects. Since they always shut positions down when they reach their target number, they must be willing to take him.

4 weeks 5 days ago Jamarco Jones (presumed OSU

Jamarco Jones (presumed OSU lean) and Roderick Johnson are probably the next two up. After that, not much else activity right now.

4 weeks 6 days ago Yes, I could absolutely see

Yes, I could absolutely see that as well. The good news is, if Taylor holds off Peppers, we know that he earned the spot instead of them playing favorites with an upperclassman. It's a win either way when you have two talented players competing.

4 weeks 6 days ago Your 2014 starting secondary

Your 2014 starting secondary could be FS Jarrod Wilson, SS Dymonte Thomas, FC Blake Countess, and BC Jabrill Peppers.

In the words of Bacari: HALOL

4 weeks 6 days ago Magnus...

Another SAM type they're looking at is Jimmy Swain (the fourth!) out of Missouri. Have you had a chance to watch his highlights as well? And if so, who do you like better? Swain night be a slightly better athlete and he's got about 10 pounds on Winovich right now. I think to a certain degree you're obviously hoping that they can add 20-30 pounds and maintain that athleticism so neither one is any guarantee, but both seem like they could be fairly good if they develop correctly.

5 weeks 2 days ago He was a great player and I

He was a great player and I know reporters love questions about how X player might have been overshadowed or Y player might be underrated because he had a superstar teammate, but there's just no way that Timmy didn't benefit tremendously from being on the same team as Trey Burke. He's a great shooter, but if he was the focal point of the offense, he would have been asked to put it on the floor a lot more often and he would have struggled to do so.

I think NBA scouts probably have an excellent beat on his skillset and he'll have a productive career, but not everyone has to be "underrated", some guys can just be "rated".

5 weeks 4 days ago Am I the only one that's

Am I the only one that's afraid we just landed Will Gholston Jr?

Obviously everyone you land isn't going to be a superstar, but I'm afraid the hype might exceed the talent here.

And before you neg me, that's just like my opinion, man.

5 weeks 6 days ago Well yes, they may be on the

Well yes, they may be on the decline now as Beamer gets older, but the series doesn't start for another 7 years. Whose to say they don't have Foster or an entirely different coach who has them highly competitive and revitalized?

Waaaayyyy too early to speculate as to the quality of the game at this point.

5 weeks 6 days ago DC Alums

Huge alumni base out here as well. I know a ton of alumni are going to be making the trip for this one so there should be a very strong Michigan presence as well. Should be fantastic.

Certainly possible. Especially if he visits for Under the Lights Part Deux this fall.

6 weeks 6 days ago So Braxton Miller and Devin

So Braxton Miller and Devin Gardner are both putting in work with Whitfield, huh?

When Big Ten defensive backs go to sleep tonight they better say a little prayer of thanks for Andrew Maxwell so that they can still get a few interceptions.

And yes, he's worked with a laundry list of top QBs the past few years like Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, RGII, Johnny Manziel, Roethlisberger. The guy knows his stuff:

You're missing the real issue. The real question about Big Ten expansion is: will Rutgers come into Michigan and steal the second-tier kids from MSU?!
