|11 weeks 1 day ago||A couple things: First of||
A couple things:
First of all, I said they weren't highly ranked when they committed. Beilein's strength has been landing guys before they blow up, whether that be while they're still in High School or when they get to Michigan. And if you can pull it off, it's actually the most efficient way to do things. You get high caliber players without having the equivalent level of competition for them. And most of these guys end up 4 or 5 stars before they get to Michigan anyway!
And second of all, just because Michigan had deep runs in the tournament 2 years in a row, the traditional basketball powerhouses don't just go away. Programs like Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Kansas, Ohio State, UCLA, and UConn don't just go away because they have one bad tournament. They're going to gobble up the majority of the 5 stars year after year. So yes, I'm fine with Michigan pulling in underrated players that blow up, it's the best way to succeed.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Seriously dude? Those runs||
Those runs were driven by players that turned out to be far better than they were ranked when they committed. I think that strategy is working just fine.

|27 weeks 1 day ago||The last two games against||
The last two games against Nebraska and Penn State have been interesting for Michigan's KenPom ranking. They've basically held steady in the rankings at around 20-21, but their offense has risen from about 15th to 5th best in the country while their defense has dropped from a peak of 48th to 77th. With the way their offense appears to be improving, they can definitely move up if they can just figure out how to get that defense back down towards last year's level.
|28 weeks 6 days ago||Rotating the Defense||
I think one way to get better is to stop rotating guys so ridiculously much. There really didn't seem to be any appreciable benefit to rotating every single position. The starters are your starters for a reason: because they're better than the guys behind them. Rotate the defensive line just enough that they don't get tired and play three inside linebackers, but other than that, I think this defense will perform at its best with only token subbing.

I'm not sure that there are a lot of takeaways from Penn State's game against Indiana, unfortunately. They play such a different offense than us, so any struggles that Penn State revealed on Saturday may not be repeatable for our offense.
On defense it's going to be interesting to see what Mattison does. Unfortunately I see him playing a lot of two deep to prevent Allen Robinson from destroying us in the long game, so we'll have to see if Penn State can sustain long drives. I see them scoring somewhere in the low to mid 20's, so we just have to get above that.

|45 weeks 2 days ago||My favorite thing about this||
My favorite thing about this team right now is that they seem good enough on both sides of the ball that Michigan can enter a game with a comprehensive gameplan and feel comfortable that they're going to be able to execute it. It seems pretty clear that they were going to allow Notre Dame to dink and dunk their way down the field because they thought that they couldn't be stopped on offense. Teams like Michigan State and Nebraska don't have that kind of freedom, and I think it's an underrated aspect of success in football today. You're going to come up against a lot of different styles of play and it's nice to have the ability to adapt.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||If you were impressed by Rees||
If you were impressed by Rees I don't think you were watching the same quarterback as I was. He did some good things obviously, but that's more about the Notre Dame coaching staff realizing his limitations and putting him in a position to succeed. He has very little arm strength and loses his accuracy on anything past 15 yards. There were several times a guy was wide open and he couldn't put the ball in the right spot. He wouldn't have a hope of hitting even a fraction of the throws that Devin was making. In my opinion, he's a decent QB but one that you'll always have to put in a position to succeed, he's never going to win a game by himself. You correctly pointed out the receivers though. I think Jones and Daniels are very, very talented and Niklas will only get better. They're the talent that carries that offense right now.

Also, the problem with Ferentz isn't whether he should or shouldn't be fired, because it's obvious that he should. The problem is that they're locked into a long-term deal where they owe him vast piles of money. He can't be fired because they can't afford to.

Hand is actually listed as a strongside defensive end on all of the recruiting sites. If Taco has the pass rushing ability and speed to get to the QB, you'll want him more on the edge than on the interior (which the SDE is in this defense), up to a reasonable size. Plus with Hand coming in and looking at that SDE depth, that would be a much better place for him to play early since the talent and depth seems to be a lot lower.

My impression was that he was almost begrudgingly really enjoying everything, like he didnt want to be having fun and liking it, but still was. It's good to see that he's taking an official visit too. I still don't expect him to choose Michigan, but at least we're making them work for it.

That was my original sentiment as well, "These kids aren't very smart for realizing that MSU is still MSU, they're just being sold the same product in better packaging", but the more I think about it the less that actually makes sense. The reason the hire was so brilliant was that's exactly MSU's problem. They've been a top ten defense by traditional and advanced metrics these past couple of years, and there's nothing to indicate that might change anytime soon. The coaching is clearly very, very good. All they needed is to dress up the product in a fresh set of clothes. I think that's what makes the hire so worthwhile for them.

Well the West Coast Offense is about timing and accuracy/decision making so you would start there when looking for qualities. I would say that biggest thing that he's lacking right now is foot work, which looks pretty poor. And his mechanics just aren't very good either. If you go to his highlight tape and watch the throw at the 0:53 second mark, he's rolling out and he throws off of his back foot and doesn't get any legs into it at all, he just kind of throws it like you would in the backyard. Obviously he's still really young and has plenty of time to develop, but he needs so much more work than a lot of other quarterbacks and there's no guarantee he'll get there.
|50 weeks 21 hours ago||I don't believe that they||
I don't believe that they were ever going to offer him. Which isn't to say that he has no talent, he just doesn't come close to the skill set that they want at the position. They have offered one 2015 QB and shown interest in half a dozen others and he was not one of those.
|50 weeks 1 day ago||Agreed, it's pretty obvious||
Agreed, it's pretty obvious that he is both talented and that Michigan is completely disinterested in him. There are plenty of good QB's out there that Michigan will never pursue because they have a very specific criteria for their QB skill set.
However, it is interesting that State is starting to pursue some kids with some legs on them. Although Terry and Campbell aren't quite dual threat, they're not statues like all of the guys they've been recruiting for the past 5 years either.

And I agree with that, we watched him all year, I would be very surprised to see him fall out of the top 10 as well. To me, the bigger travesty is that Michael Carter-Williams would be picked in front of Burke just because he's taller. The guy shot under 30% from three, and had an assist to turnover ratio nearly a full point lower than Burke because he can't hold onto the ball. Any GM that picks him just doesn't value his job.

The thing about Mock Drafts is, he's not actually saying how good he thinks Burke is, he's saying how good he thinks the various NBA GM's think he is. It's not so much about knowing the talent as figuring out who needs what and then getting a read on the opinion of the talent available.

|1 year 6 weeks ago||Agreed on the MSU game, but||
Agreed on the MSU game, but if that Northwestern game doesn't terrify you then you're a bolder man (or woman) than I. They had us dead to rights last year, Kain Colter does a really good job running that offense, and Venric Mark was a big threat as a freshman and you can only assume he's going to get better. Win or lose, that game is going to be very, very frustrating to watch.
|1 year 7 weeks ago||Great Article Brian||
What's the most disappointing about this, in my opinion, is the way that these Southern programs have been able to manipulate perception better than the Big Ten teams. Butch Jones and Mark Stoops both took over absolutely terrible teams and they've both done a better job selling, "We may be terrible right now, but we're about to turn this ship around, and you can come play in the shiny, wonderful, best-conference SEC if you come here" than Michigan State or Nebraska has been able to parlay fairly recent Big Ten successes into results on the recruiting trail. Which means that it's gotten to the point where terrible SEC is better than good to middling Big Ten. That's really, really bad.
|1 year 7 weeks ago||It Does Matter||
The problem is that if you're not beating good teams, public perception of your skill level becomes subject to debate. To this day we don't ultimately know how good some of Boise State's teams were because they were never given the opportunity to prove whether or not they were national championship caliber teams. Due to a greater national presence of college football, the Big Ten name is only going to carry you so far, and if you're not beating a good handful of very good to elite teams, you're not going to get the same post-season opportunities as others.
|1 year 8 weeks ago||IMO, that's the ideal||
IMO, that's the ideal scenario. You rarely want to start true freshman, but you don't really want to start a sophomore without any experience either. The nickel seems like a great way to get both of them on the field for a good number of snaps and take advantage of their otherworldly athleticism, while preparing them for their fulltime safety or cornerback position in the future. And as you mentioned, with Gordon and Taylor graduating when they are, it would really work out.
That being said, someone's going to break their tibia or something because it's football, rendering all of this thought process moot.

I said there were some caveats, but I do think it's still a downward trend. All of these sites do have dedicated midwest scouting guys, so I don't necessarily think it's a scouting issue. More guys always get discovered, but you players from all over move up and down throughout the process, not just Midwest guys.
|1 year 8 weeks ago||Interesting Note||
So I was taking a peek through these and it seemed to me like the rankings were light on Midwestern prospects. Caveats apply obviously (these are not final rankings, this is just one sites opinion, etc.), but that definitely seems to be the case and it would seem to signal that the rust belt/sun belt trend is deepening.
For the three major midwestern states, the ones that Michigan draws upon most heavily at least, the "High blue chip talent" is falling.

This may not seem like a lot, but I think it does have some pretty major ramifications for the Big Ten and Michigan. Michigan is going to have to dig deeper down south to get their talent, which is why I think you're seeing them hit a more vulnerable place like Virginia so hard. The Big Ten is going to be fighting for fewer and fewer scraps as well. There's a lot more to be said, maybe I'll throw together a diary on this if people would be interested.

Rivals may have the best rankings, but in terms of subscribing, it's hard to see what value they add that other sites can't cover. 247 does a good job facilitating discussion, and they're not afraid to say where they think a school is actually at with a prospect, which is ultimately what people want.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||My thoughts||
I think you're going to see next season unfold a lot like OSU's season did this year. At the beginning expectations might be a bit too high as they are still young and people overvalue how smoothly they can transition to a team without Burke, but then Beilein coaches them up and they get steadily better until they peak at "very good but are they great?"

It's so strange how the 2013 and 2014 classes have flip flopped for Michigan and Ohio State. They got Bell, Apple, Bosa, and a bunch of other national guys while we scooped up all of the Ohio guys and they couldn't stop talking about their "national focus" under Meyer. Well this year they're getting all of the Ohio guys while we're pulling in Cole from Florida, Mone from Utah, and we very well could land Peppers, Hand, and a whole bunch of other national guys. Just weird, very weird paradigm.

Good write-up Ace. I feel like everyone is focusing on the Havoc defense, and rightly so, but the other thing I feel teams have to watch out for is guarding the 3 point line in transition. I saw them hit many open looks from 3 when they were able to push, drive, and kick and that would obviously be nice to avoid.

The best thing I can say for Tom Izzo is that I only hate him in those 40 minutes that Michigan/Michigan St are playing each other. The same is mostly true for Bo Ryan and Thad Matta. But Crean is just a loathsome child. I think the Big Ten is going to get rather sick of him very quickly.

As a follow-up, perhaps you could look at the assist rates and transition baskets when McGary and Morgan are on the floor to better understand the offensive efficiency numbers? I take issue with saying Michigan's defense isn't good. They're ranked 39th on KenPom. They're not "great" or "suffocating", but they are definitely good.
In fact, I think in many ways their defense is an expression of Beilein's offensive philisophy, just on the other end of the floor. They're not going to be really aggressive and try to disrupt the other team's flow, but take what the offense gives them with opportunistic blocks and steals and just constantly getting their hands in your face to contest your shot. But there are 347 Division I teams, if you're ranked 39th I would say you have a good defense.

I find myself thinking the same things, but look at this year. The message coming in was, "Martin and RVB are going to be awfully hard to replace", but the remaining starters got coached up and took either small (Thomas Gordon, Demens) or large (Ryan, Morgan, Roh, and Washington) steps forward, and the defense as a whole didn't suffer for it. I think as the system becomes even more engrained, the leaps forward might not happen in place of steady improvement, but with these coaches and the players they're bringing in, it's hard to imagine this defense being even average over the next several years.

Long term I would still love to see Beyer moved over there. Maybe he'll be too small next year, but he's not a pass rusher and his strengths seem to be his intelligence and coachability. His senior year he could be fantastic.

Sort of related, sort of not, but my favorite part of this week and to a greater extent this year has been watching State fans try to reconcile their team in actuality with their pre-season expectations of it. They see the line for the game set at 10 points and their major struggles moving the ball and many are saying, "Excellent, this team performs so much better when they're the underdog!" But this relies upon some sort of warped assumption that there's just this switch they haven't been flipping that will somehow turn on against a highly motivated Michigan team with a singular focus on a Big Ten championship. You had 3 points at the half against Eastern Michigan! Adjust your expectations already.

In all seriousness though, 2014 does look like a pretty down year for Michigan talent, especially from a depth perspective. The top end talent is there no doubt (Harris, Webb, McDowell) but there doesn't seem to be a ton behind that. I think Michigan will land 3-5 Michigan prospects this year and in general will give out a lot fewer offers than the past couple of years. I think they've got all of their offensive linemen from their offers so far except they might offer Kyle Trout. They might get up to 100, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them stay under the triple digits.

I actually hope he takes more time and sees a few more schools before he commits. Dawson committed within minutes of getting his offer and then continued to receive offers and attention from other schools. Better he does due process before committing than to feel trapped by the no visit policy (which I like, I'm not criticizing it).
|1 year 40 weeks ago||Ya, he's been interesting||
Ya, he's been interesting already. He visited Purdue last weekend against Michigan and got his first offer from them and then decided he loved it so much that he was going to go back there this weekend for the game vs. Wisconsin. Then, the Michigan coaches called him and probably hinted that if he visited they would offer and he really should come check it out, so he visited and got the offer before the game. Then he spent all Sunday hanging out with LTT and he's been enamored with Michigan ever since and says he'll be back for the State game this weekend.
In other news, Twitter is a hell of a drug.

Yes, but as you're seeing with MSU this year, if you want to sustain success year after year, you do need to have some elite recruits. I agree that it's not as important considering the other commitments we have, but it's very hard to build an elite, dynastic type program without elite recruiting. This one decommitment doesn't hurt as much as it might have in the past, but you can't rely on sleepers alone.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||Personally, I would like to||
Personally, I would like to see them go after a committed prospect before they offer Finely. Not only because Pocic, McGovern, Montelus are higher ranked, but because Finley's sister is at State and I actually think he would be less likely to make the switch. In general though, I'm not very optimistic that they'll be able to swing anyone else and I'm fine with 4 linemen.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||I disagree, it's pretty||
I disagree, it's pretty obvious that if Dawson would have visited Florida he would have committed to them as well. It's just the timing is different (and proper) now. The coaches just believe in the word commitment. If you're visiting somewhere else, you're not committed.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||They could always reach out||
They could always reach out to a couple of linemen, but you would think that those linemen have been building relationships with the schools they've committed too. Notre Dame has several commits with Michigan offers as well, so if they want another O-Lineman they can always reach out and there are 4 months to get in someone's ear...
|1 year 40 weeks ago||Ya, obviously Strobel will||
Ya, obviously Strobel will put on the weight long term and I think that SDE is definitely his position, I just don't know if he can put it on for next year. And good point about Clark as well, he is walking a very thin line at this point.
For me Beyer just came to mind because I feel the same way about him as I did about Roh at WDE. He's not a big liability or anything, but he's not going to get to the quarterback enough for the position and that's why a switch seemed like it could put him in a better position to succeed.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||I didn't forget about him,||
I didn't forget about him, I've just never been all that impressed with him as he doesn't seem to do the little .5 point things Brian mentions that have made RVB and Roh successful. I think you would be more likely to see Heitzman there than Black. And Beyer is the same weight as Strobel right now (252), so if one can't put on the weight for the position then the other can't either.

Haha, well that is just damn uncanny. Beyer or bust for the switch though. He's the biggest and the worst pass rusher of the three.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||I was looking forward to this||
I was looking forward to this all week, just to see how Jake Ryan would grade out. Count me not disappointed in the slightest. Mini-Clay Matthews indeed.
I've also been thinking about this for awhile and my not so bold prediction is that Brennen Beyer makes the same move this offseason that Craig Roh did last offseason and your UFR's next year feature Beyer as "mini-Roh" or "mini-RVB" as well. He's not much of a pass rusher at all, and it's obvious at this point that Ojemudia is at least coming along. With Frank Clark at WDE as well, the position is a bit crowded. Better a junior Beyer with game experience than a walk-on like Brink or a redshirt freshman like Strobel. Anyone else see this forthcoming?

2. Florida State: They play in a weaker conference and EJ Manuel should be a lot better this year, plus they have a lot of talent on defense.
3. Michigan State: They just have so much proven talent on defense, and Leveon Bell should be very, very good as well. I hate myself for picking them, but unless some serious injuries occur I don't see them having a less than top 10 type year.

I would agree with that. He took over the event in 2011 and in the past two years it certainly seems like he's been using it to hype up some under the radar prospects and get them exposure as shown by a UCF commit "winning" it this year.
You didn't really voice your opinion on whether or not you think that's ok, but I really don't have an issue with it. Shane is good. Many, many people seem to know that he is very good and he will have his college paid for 4-5 years as a result of being good. Being named one of the best 11 QB's at an almost-but-not-really football competition isn't going to change that, but if someone gets more exposure and a scholarship offer because Dilfer hypes them a bit more than they should be, the benefit from that is a lot higher than an ego boost for someone like Shane.
Zeke Pike was named an Elite 11 QB and he's going to be a tight end(!!!) at Louisville(!!!), which isn't even the school he was planning on attending less than a month ago. Why? Because in an event where they play shadow football where the defense knows it's pass 100% of the time, there's no pass rush, and each QB only throws 30 balls in a few days he didn't think Morris was one of the best 11 QB's?
Blame the event itself and the hype it receives, not Trent Dilfer.
