I'm actually happy that goals against are down this year. Sure, we have looked flat at times during the winless sreak, but we have also gotten so many bad breaks that tend to even out over the season. Defense has been stable which is huge and also necessary if we plan on more that just a Division title.
I'm also encouraged that the last streaks of this magnitude (which obviously is over) happened in '02 and '08 and they were longer and we raised the Cup both years. There is no way I doubt my Wings.

was that if Denard put up those numbers all year and beat OSU and MSU and won a BCS Bowl game and the Heisman and maybe struck a pose, THEN he would be able to be feel "entitled"? Desmond contradicted himself. I don't think Bo qualified the statement "no one is bigger than the Michigan program" with any performance exemptions.
In fact if anyone is acting the big-shot, it's Desmond Howard. It just blows my mind he can throw out Denard Robinson's name as an example of what's wrong with college football. Denard is all about what is RIGHT with college football.

That game 7 was one of mine too. Roy got pulled in the game. It was over in the first period.
I have to say 1997 tho, when we finally beat the Avs in a series.... game 6 at home. I drove 300 miles on the spur of the moment and gladly paid $300 bucks to see it. It was sweet. During warmups Offsprings' Gone Away blared. They played "what a night" by Frankie Valley on the speakers afterward. Even today when I hear those songs it takes me back..Fedorov had a huge game and Vernon stoned em. It was so huge to finally beat the Av's and we swept the finals.

I buy into the theory that difficult times doesn't build character in those who don't live by principles- it reveals their character. This is true for Tressel and the Buckeye fans that don't see the truth in all this. I wouldn't expect them to react any different. It's just cool the whole country can now see what I've known for a long time because I live in Ohio and have seen them in action for awhile now.

I hope Tressel stays until the day he lies his way into getting OSU the death penalty. Once a liar, always a liar. Tressel will be good for OSU football.
And to those who say we need OSU in order to keep our rivalry with them I say Michigan football is much bigger than that rivalry. Screw Ohio State, they get what they deserve and obviously want.

|3 years 18 weeks ago||Since being under center is||
Since being under center is something Denard hasn't done in awhile,it makes sense he would practice there.Initially, I had the same reaction as Brian with the power play manball comments by Hoke, but that will just be one facet of our offense and one that I believe is key in redzone situations and late in a game with a lead. It's basic. Hoke is concentrating on teaching the basics first, what's wrong with that.
Personally, I think getting Denard away from taking a pounding with 25+ carries is a good thing and will make him even more dangerous late in games and keep him on the field entire games. The pounding he took was taking a toll on his passing game IME, something RR would never admit.
I'm gonna venture to guess that his 6.3 ypc goes up this year.
|3 years 18 weeks ago||Last year, dropping back to||
Last year, dropping back to pass was like Denard getting to rest from all his carries which I think explains his hesitation to take off. I can't remember how many times there was open field ahead of him and he tried to thread the needle. That won't be happening this year.

Gee said he asked Tressel, "questions none of you (reporters) would dare ask ... to make sure there was no kind of smoking gun."

Right now its just a coach coverng up for his boyz. This comment by Gee makes me think it involves more.....Gee said he asked Tressel, "questions none of you (reporters) would dare ask ... to make sure there was no kind of smoking gun."
The truth is, they were questions the reporters weren't allowed to ask. Like the forwarding question.
I think the strategy is to lie and let the chips fall where they may because OSU can keep it in-house and the NCAA will not dig too deep. The only risk is that tOSU may have underestimated the fact that the NCAA does not have subpeona power but they adversely have latitude in burden of proof. They can assume things. Like... these dudes are trying to play us.

Go Wings.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||He understands the tradition?||
He thinks he understands. If he really understood, then he would at some point say he can't blame DB one bit for not giving him another year and just say it was time to move on. He obviously doesn't understand now. So did he ever? Not really.
He tried to understand, but when he talked of Pitt-WVU when saying how he understood rivalries.... come on. He never understood getting destroyed every year by OSU is just flat-out unacceptable. I would think he would now since it got him fired. And even when DB gave him one more look, we get pounded in the Gator Bowl.
Just the fact that he thinks he deserves another year proves he doesn't understand. And maybe those people on this board who thinks he deserved another year don't understand Michigan Tradition either. They just think they do.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Bring him on||
Anything that has the potential to come back and make Tressel and OSU look bad , I'm all for. Seems this would be a very risky move bringing him on the team tho, but it may be fun to watch.
|3 years 27 weeks ago||The key to it all will be can||
The key to it all will be can this offense be disciplined and efficiient against good defenses. Thats the area that wasn't addressed in the OP's analysis.
We have the talent and coupled with a better D that lets Denard and Co relax a little bit and not feel they have to score on every possesion will help, but it remains to be seen if Borges (and Hoke) can instill a confidence and a discipline to not self-destruct at key points in games whether it be penalties, turnovers, dropped passes yada, yada that plagued us last year.
We were very undisciplined on both sides of the ball last year and I'm confident that can get a lot better but would have liked to see Borges stats on turnovers, penalties and 3rd downs. But comparing a frosh brought in at game 2 to Denard is useless to me.
The above observation is nuts. Burns was a true frosh-OFF THE BENCH in game 2. I don't think Bill Walsh could have done much there. OP says thats not encouraging for us in regards to Denard. I say its irrelevant.
|3 years 28 weeks ago||here you go...||
Because if we can't beat them then we can't win the Big10. Don't you realize that? Thats why the OSU game was so big , because it was worth all the marbles. That is just so simple to me yet why people dont understand that is unreal.
Win the B10 and maybe we are in position for NC. Impossible to do if we don't. Now do you get it?
Plus I hate the Buckeyes and Spartans a lot.
|3 years 28 weeks ago||Welcome Coach Hoke||
This board is unbelievable and Brian just feeds it. I think there's actually more thought-thru commentary (and thats all any of this is until we get some results) on the Detroit media sites, dare I mention their name.
What we have is a lifer as a head coach now. He is tough, defensive minded and he TURNS PROGRAMS AROUND. And he LOVES MICHIGAN. For God sake give him some time. I am 100% behind him and am confident. PLayers absolutely love him and I am certain he hates MSU and OSU as much as us. I love the guy and have never wanted to see a coach succeed as much as Hoke and when he does I will give HIM the credit and be block quoting from this thread when the bandwagon fills back up. No I won't because I really don't care that much what you people think.
|3 years 29 weeks ago||Staying patient||
On the contrary, Im somewhat ok with the fact we don't have a coach yet because it means we don't have a less than ideal coach. I'd rather this take a little time now, since it's already late as it is,rather than to just take anybody. The longer it goes the less chance of Hoke IME.

Im not sure how orchestrated all this is by Harbaugh, can't imagine he could forsee all these events falling in place to give him such leverage but I'm wondering if he sees that Stanford has the potential to be the Duke of major college football. Luck staying proves that potential. He can get the smart, high-end 4 year type guys and build a dynasty out there with a wealthy alumni base. Coach K does pretty well money-wise also.
|3 years 29 weeks ago||I agree||
DB shouldnt even waste precious time if he gets the vibe JH won't come here. It will keep egg off his face and the university's and he can focus his time to go after someone who wants to come here. This whole JH circus could go on awhile. DB has obviously moved on, wisely.
|3 years 29 weeks ago||Im behind Brandon so far||
What if DB had hired one of Brian's short-listers in December? Everyone would have gone freakin nuts. WE WANTED JH!!!! So he waits, can you imagine if DB had tried a poach job on Harbaugh and failed which he would have. The carnage from that would have been horrible. Its the same reason RR got strung up early in his tenure.... some bad breaks. Be reasonable. I think DB appraised the situation late in the year and saw how dicey it was and went with this plan and stuck to it and now the emotional side of the fanbase is freaking out.
My main point is this... If Harbaugh is the main target but it's not known if he's available, you either poach or move on early or wait. DB waited till he could find out. He would have been vilified if he moved on and it would have made us out to be douches if we tried to poach and lost out- which we would have. Im gonna try and be reasonable. DB is in a very tight spot here... we will see what he's made of but so far I can't see where he's blown it.

|3 years 33 weeks ago||usual negative spin||
Hey Rosenberg- DB is doing what he said he would do. RR understands that. Trust me this is harder on RR than anyone and he's holding up pretty well considering. For a columnist to assume this will cast a wedge even if he stays is insane. It also shows the thinking-process of this dope. He thinks that way so he assumes RR would pout too. RR is thus far showing character. DB is showing character too which is something Rosenberg knows nothing about. Emotional decisions are quick. They are also frequently wrong. Thanks for thinking this thru Dave and looking at the big picture.
Integrity is something some people can't see as a factor in a decision making process. MR appears to be one of them.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||You're wrong||
I beg to differ. The only real bright spot of the last couple years is the Michigan players refusal to whine, pout, point fingers etc. Having to stomach Pryor's idiocy and selfishness would have made losing unbearable. And trust me, he wouldn't have made an impact on the field either. His me,me, me attitude would have hurt this team.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||Thank you for some facts||
Thank you very much for posting this. I'm just speaking for myself, but this month long waiting period has provided me time to take the emotion of the w/l record out of the equation and be able to see this whole situation clearly.
This culture being formed by RR will undoubtedly translate into success on the field. The building of a strong foundation does take more time than the sand castle in E. Lansng. I can be patient. And it's information that the OP gave that confirms these observations.
Dave Brandon is a calculating man that I believe gave us this month to just chill a bit and look at the whole picture. That's what he's doing.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||Its night and day dude.||
Nobody had to coach Pryor to skip out of bounds to avoid a hit. That's his nature. Denard on the other hand has to be coached to do that after getting rung-up a time or 2. Everyone wants to win. Denard HATES to lose and he will be a champion. But, in the meantime, he never ever pouts or calls out a coach or puts himself before the program. These are things Pryor does and doesnt even know he's doing because he is self-consumed.
Thank God Denard is a Wolverine and Pryor is a Buckeye. Perfect.

Especially if that player has never gained a yard outside of high school. I am not so pessimistic about the future of the Michigan program to hang my hopes and dreams on Dee Hart. I think DB has more vision than that too and doing things right-as he is- can't be compromised by how a particular potential future football player may feel about the coaching situation..... and we don't even know if that's why Dee changed his mind anyway.
Recruiting hits goes with the territory when a coaching change is imminent. Collateral damage. I see this as nothing compared to if we were to lose some key Michigan men that are on the roster altready., but that may happen too.
These are tough times for our beloved football program, and we better all get behind someone. It's clear not everyone can get behind our head coach. How about everyone get behind our AD. He just may be bringing in guy who has a top ten recruiting class at Stanford. Who would be more important, that guy or a high school kid? Get real.
We have an AD who is trying to do what he feels is best for Michigan- long haul- and do it in a classy way. What the hell more could anyone want?
|3 years 34 weeks ago||No||
Why can't people at least consider the fact that DB may have already made up his mind. He is an astute business man. To lay out the fact RR is gonna be gone before he has a new HC in place would greatly damage recruiting and possibly the guy coming in (JH?).
That was part of the problem when LC retired. The period of time when Michigan was head coach-less was horrible on recruiting. But DB can't explain all this to all of us. He's doing his best just to reassure us that he's handling things just fine.
|3 years 34 weeks ago||DB and the Michigan "brand"||
DB is gonna (rightfully so) put the interests of Michigan ahead of RR. I think by waiting he is avoiding all the fallout that Martin created by "poaching" RR from WVU. Whatever he does, it will be in the best interest of Michigan. RR's future is not a factor.
Having said that, he may already have some behind the scenes agreements ready to go and RR may already know his future and it may include a non-disclosure. WHO KNOWS??
And is he hurting recruiting by waiting? I don't think so. The closer to signing date it is, the less time a recruit has to mull over decommitting without a new HC (JH?) able to try to talk to him. And maybe he'd bring some of "his" guys over. WHO KNOWS?
But I do know this- To fire RR now without a HC in place would really be a disaster.

Michigan basketball=hoagie. You can cut the dude making the hoagies a bit more slack than the guy making the pies, when you run a pizza joint.
|3 years 34 weeks ago||We didn't quit||
What???? But we fought till the end. Youth, injuries and all.
I will attribute the heart this team has, which I flat-out love, to our coach.
|3 years 34 weeks ago||It is fairly obvious||
DB just rying to get a deal done with JH, hell maybe it's already done. The consolation prize is if it can't get done then RR comes back for another year which he probably deserves anyway. DB has put himself in a win-win situation.
The only drawback is this: If RR returns, then my God, what person in his right mind takes over this defense? Whoever that shall be would have to snuggle next to RR on the hot-seat. And getting a top-notch guy to do that would truly be unbelievable.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||One word: youth||
This offense implodes at times. It's a sophomore-centered offense. That's why rebuilding is called rebuilding and quick fix is a fantasy some are apparently still in. The key mistakes: fumbles, drops, penalties, ints, poor throws will dwindle the next 2 years. Then when there is senior leadership that leaves, there will be upperclassmen ready to step in.
An underclassmen based team is a work in progress. Who doesn't understand this? tosu (and Auburn too I believe) has 24 seniors. Next year they will have a bunch too. That's called reloading. Thats where RR wants to be when he talks about building the best program in the nation. I'm gonna try and be patient, as hard as it is to watch this, and try to be sensible here.

There goes my weekend.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Good feeling||
I think "intangibles" will figure in big time in this game. Our D took notice to Wisc puttin up 83 and will play best game of the year for us. Adversely, I think 83 may get their offense a bit complacent- plus, no offense can click like that every week. Sometimes, if a game is too easy then it's not good.
This is all just a gut feeling I have, nothing near the time and effort the OP put into his entry. I have been watching sports a long time though, and just have a good feeling. We are in "fight for everything we get mode". Wisconsin is not. It's hard to just flip a switch, usually takes a wake-up call. We got ours with MSU, Iowa, PSU.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||On the other hand, does good||
On the other hand, does good field position for our opponents limit their yardage? Length of drive is only limited by starting point at times with our D. I just think to say we are approaching average is nuts and am looking for a reason other than being an eye witness to explain it.
|3 years 36 weeks ago||Cherry-picker||
What a cherry-picker. We are decided underdogs in both games. So if we don't win one then Drew thinks he proves his point. What a lazy, shallow and dishonest journalist he is. He's sad really. Dude has no credibility.

|3 years 37 weeks ago||TP- reflection of Tressel||
I love and appreciate Denard, Tate and Devin more and more all the time. We have such a classy group of QB's. This speaks well of RR and our coaches . Tate had a bit of a "me" attitude and that was corrected rather quickly and RR is responsible for that. I really like the direction of our program, even more when TP speaks.
On the other hand , Tressel has shown no leadership in helping rid TP of his self-centered nature which will not serve him well in the NFL and in life.
|3 years 37 weeks ago||One of the things that makes||
One of the things that makes us Michigan is that everyone wants to beat us because we are Michigan and we just flat-out want to win every game. RR gets this and then is accused of not "getting it". He gets it. I get it. Sparty doesn't get it, but that's ok.
Sparty is like little brother with a learning disability. Just walk him to his special-needs class and pat him on the head for encouragement. No need to get upset.
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Instate guy||
In addition to the OP's points, I believe we must get this guy because he is in-state. We have to turn the tide of not getting who we want in our own backyard. Can't get them all for sure but we need to get the defensive studs that give us a good look. The fact he could very well end up at MSU if he doesn't go Blue makes it even more important. Plus, the fact we have been atop his list for so long would make this a huge bummer if he went elsewhere.

Especially when Roy just said he wants it, but knows he has to earn it.

I hold out hope that a Big 10 offense will not execute like a well-oiled machine at least one game this year.Surely we are due some luck aren't we. I know falling on loose balls isn't luck, but seems Penn St fumbled out of bounds a few times. Maybe some gift-wrapped passes to our wide open db's or something.
We are so bad on D tho that we must fill an offense with supreme confidence, which makes offensive implosions by our opponents highly unlikely. I would be shocked if we win this game but it is possible which is why I'll be watching.

|3 years 38 weeks ago||Did the OP hear DB's presser||
Did the OP hear DB's presser today? AFTER the season. If we lose all 4 it doesn't look good for RR. Unless DB consults THE KNOWLEDGE now, there's no way of knowing and we all know TK is done for the year. One thing for certain, Harbaugh's relatively small buyout will play no factor whatsoever.

Wow. And I thought it's been tough being a fan of Michigan football. I'm to the point of feeling bad for those supporters of the Irish. My heart goes out to them all, just a sad deal.

|3 years 38 weeks ago||Whats next?||
We have a primary problem, GERG and his incompetance as a instructor of fundamentals and his inability to teach young players. Hell, I'll even leave his crazy schemes out of the equation. It's very obvious, as emphasized by Brian and others and backed up once again by this UFR. We are getting WORSE. He can't coach guys up.
I draw 2 conclusions of my own. Number 1- It's good the problem has been identified so clearly. Even RR can see it, right. DB? I would think so. This doesn't bode well at all for the rest of the season, but there is hope in cleaning house on D and being good next year. Just average would be fantastic. Thats all our offense needs Number 2- What if RR doesn't see things as they are and DB doesn't pull the plug on RR?. That's death to this team's future in my eyes. But I get hope when RR says this problem can't be fixed overnight that means he does know the GERG era is over and he can swallow some humble pie and let a strong ,proven DC coach our defense next year.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||Practice tackling. We are a||
Practice tackling. We are a horrible tackling defense. This is why it is no coincidence a bad defense has a bad 3rd down conversion rate. Factor in inexperience with poor technique and the only thing we can hope for is that the opposing offense doesn't execute, which hasn't happened in awhile.
|3 years 38 weeks ago||And don't forget we needed||
And don't forget we needed some flukey plays right before half to get back in the UMass (!) game. Very well could have lost ND and Indiana too. Get real people. This is a horrible , horrible defense which our offense carries like a eleven billion pound gorilla on its back. We could be 6-2 or 7-1 but we could also be 2-6. We are a bad, bad team. I thought that much was settled.

We just got shredded by a walk-on starting his first game. Evan Royster ran wild on us. We lost. I'm not happy about that. Was so rude to my wife that night she wouldn't speak to me on Sunday. But if we are gonna lose, and it's pretty clear we did and will probably lose a few more, then I'm just gonna look at the big picture and hope that this is the impetus for something better next year and 2012

Trent absolutely assassinated Rich Rodriguez's character on Bengals Line last night on 700WLW. Tried to find a link to no avail. Anybody else hear it?
I knew he didn't like RR, but damn. Seems to have thrown the whole program under the bus because of that. Among other things he said RR doesn't play by the rules. It was about a 15 minute rant. When asked if he made the change from WR to corner because of respect for Carr he said, and I paraphrase- Yeah, but I wouldn't do it for that guy up there now.
He just went on and on. Really shed UM and Rodriguez in a bad light which I hate to see. Obviously Trent is not All In.

|3 years 41 weeks ago||This JUCO talk is crazy.||
This JUCO talk is crazy. People don't even know what the problem is I guess. It's fundamentals on D, which goes back to coaching. Every freaking time. We are LAST in the B10, almost in FBS and thats not a place a good coach would be in even with sub-par personnel.
OK. Lets just say everyone agrees our coaches aren't, let's say, good. Let's say average, which is a stretch. They are gonna bring in JUCOs who aren't gonna be in the upper percentile and they are gonna fast track them to start next year? And succeed? Not gonna happen. I'm not gonna even go into character issues of JUCOs.
We have good, young, dedicated , success-starved kids on our defensive roster. They are not being coached up to their potential. Their potential is much better than last in the FBS. This is an outrage. GERG has got to go. Bring in a PROVEN colege DC and pay him whatever it takes. We have enough young kids on D that would soak up good coaching like a sponge.
Look at GERGs track record. His defenses never really got better the longer he was there. If anything they got worse. I raised this point before season started and was laughed at- - Super Bowl rings, yada yada, Texas blah, blah. It's not working. Never really has for him. His defenses didn't get better. They got worse. We are in that same pattern here right now. IHow long does it need to play out?

All Dantonio has to do is beat Michigan and win a few more games and he's set for life in E.Lansing. RR's task is much greater. Right now I guarantee that beating Sparty is not the main goal, as opposed to Dantonio's main goal. RR knows he must get Michigan back to a perrenial top-5 team or he won't stay. Rightfully so, RR isn't gonna stand in front of people and lie and say his goals for his team are what Dantonio's are for his. Beating Sparty will hopefully come as second-natured as it used to as soon as RR achieves his bigger goals- taking us to the top again. And I'm behind him.
|3 years 41 weeks ago||My fear is that recruits see||
My fear is that recruits see this horrible Michigan defense and wonder if they will get the coaching and competition in practice to be their best. Because thats what the best of the best want- to be challenged. Or if the coaches will put them in a position (schemes) to succeed.
I would think there's lots of negative recruiting going on- I can see coaches on other teams pointing out our last in FBS, or near it, defense and saying something like- you want to be a part of that??
So there is a down-side, regarding recruiting, to having a thin and weak depth-chart IME, in addition to what Tom spoke of yesterday. I'd be crazy to think this situation can be turned around quickly. It won't. I just hope Denard's next 2 years aren't wasted by this incompetance of our defensive staff. RR hopes so too, because he knows he won't be here when the dust settles. That urgency gives me hope we will bring in a proven DC next year who CAN turn this around. Some improvement is all thats needed. We keep getting worse.
|3 years 41 weeks ago||Anyone who doesn't think that||
Anyone who doesn't think that RR knows this defensive problem may cost him his job is naive. RR knows. Now if it doesn't get fixed by next season, which I believe means replacing GERG who has no track record of building a strong D, then we do not challenge for B10 and RR gets fired. RR knows this and Brandon knows this. Because as stacked as we will be on offense next year, if we don't challenge for a B10 title then we never will under RR.
As to GERG's track record... it's not good. I think we all know that. Shaffers success is just more evidence.The facts have been laid out on several occasions, and he just flat-out didn't work out here as well. It's pretty obvious. Brandon needs to hire a PROVEN top-notch DC and make him the highest paid assistant in college football. Start the search now.

|3 years 41 weeks ago||The swarming defense usually||
The swarming defense usually comes because several players are in position to make a play. Usually it's necessary for one player to slow down or even make contact with ball carrier. This doesn't happen with Michigan's D. I'm no "master-mind", but repeated failure of our D and not being able to trust a teammate to be in his position and do his job just breeds uncertainty. And that breeds failure. These kids do try hard, I give them that.
The only hope I see this year is for the opposing offense to not execute. Otherwise, it means Denard and Co. needs a near perfect game in order for us to win.
|3 years 41 weeks ago||I agree with the statement.||
I agree with the statement. It's just part of this humbling rebuilding process to have to take these defeats from our rivals and just have to accept them as the way it is now. It's a loss. I see it as a subtle way for Brandon to have RR's back.
If RR had said this same thing he'd be demonized not cannonized, Why can't he be treated with the same respect Brandon is? I don't get it. I can see why even some of the players are speaking out on the dissing of their coach. With all the love Dantonio gets, local and national media, why can't every Michigan fan just shut the hell up in their open criticism of RR. Where's the loyalty. I agree with Grady who said you all need to find another team to cheer for.

|3 years 42 weeks ago||Agreed: Frustrating game||
First of all, we got outplayed. But the game was a perfect storm of MSU good fortune and lack of for Michigan. I can't remember a single good break we got the whole game. That's football tho and those things even out over the course of a season assuming we give the effort, which I believe the team will. With all that went wrong, we were still in the game til middle of 4th qtr. Sucks this all went down vs. Sparty but thats the way it is.
|3 years 42 weeks ago||The offense is not the problem||
We have a defense that can't get the opponent off the field, which totally hurts OUR offense, yet the OP wants to lay our offensive performances as basis for RR keeping his job. Our offense is not the problem. Play some D and we'll see even better offensive numbers, and wins. If RR doesn't make it at UM it will be because of the defense. I think that much is clear.
|3 years 42 weeks ago||Pick-sixes||
Pick-sixes by opposing D would also help TOP, but there are drawbacks there too. If anyone needs onside kicks, it will be Sparty
|3 years 42 weeks ago||Spartans have at least 4||
Spartans have at least 4 false starts due to crowd noise, which puts them off schedule on running downs and we pick Cousins 3 times. Defense more than does their job, stuffing the run early and after Denard leads Michigan to a 21 nothing lead we trade touchdowns for a 42-21 win. No late heroics needed, thank God, my heart needs a rest.
|3 years 42 weeks ago||Cousins is gonna hand-off as||
Cousins is gonna hand-off as long as it works. If we can stop the run early we will force Cousins to go toe-to-toe with Denard and he loses everytime. If however we get gashed by the run we may be in trouble because we are talking about 7+ minute drives and we don't get the ball nearly as much as against Ind. So this SpartanMag dude is assuming they can run the ball when he says Cousins won't have to win the game. I thiink Martin and the boys on DLine can limit running game which would bode well.
|3 years 42 weeks ago||Stopping the MSU running game||
Stopping the MSU running game is the key. They will want to control clock with the run which keeps the clock moving more so than passing, and limit our possessions. I think they know if we get 10 or 11 possessions they are screwed. They will try to pound the ball, so getting up early on them is the key to negating that strategy.

This drama comes at a perfect time to distract my mind from the game Saturday, which stresses me out. Thank you Dee. And Tom, for your judgement on when to give us that little bit of relief when you see us suffering a bit, I thank you too. You are a true humanitarian .
|3 years 42 weeks ago||Great observation||
That's why this season is the most nerve-racking in recent memory. Will we be the same team as last year? The OP didn't quell those fears at all, just identified a few. One thing I rely on heavily to feel a bit more at ease is an intangible such as payback. Desire to set right what has happened the last 2 years. Its obvious we have more character than talent on D and those with character are motivated by pride to write history of their own. We are talking about a bunch of very close, hard fought games coming up and if we win our share we will be on track for great things next year.
There is no explaining those 4th qtr defensive stands last week except pride, guts and heart. Time and time again our offense couldn't score and our D inexplicably held on the ensuing possession. There is no metric for that. Then our defense cracks with just enough time for Denard to finish it off. And ND was similar. These are the type of young men who will use adversity and lack of respect shown them by media- on D- to propel them to greatness. They will get better. It's virtually guaranteed in my experience.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||Our bend but don't break||
Our bend but don't break scheme gets teams in no-man's land in our territory where punting gains little net yds. Plus teams know they cannot give the ball back to us without scoring TD's and expect to win. They know we don't kick field goals and have to match us TD for TD. And we simply give them good odds of converting based on our weak D. Nothing to do with circling us on the schedule. But since thats been brought up, we are the ones doing the circling the rest of the year. Payback time now.

How bout the defense getting a few 3 and outs in the first half. Game over. Add a couple more possesions early and we put up 28 or more by halftime. How bout the D helping out the offense. I'm sick of people saying the quick strike aspect hurts our D. Our D needs to get THEMSELVES off the field. I am confident that in time it will happen, maybe next year. Our defense does nothing to help the offense, or themselves. I give them credit tho for not quitting which is why we won today but man do they make it hard for this team.

|3 years 43 weeks ago||We can be Big 10 champs this||
We can be Big 10 champs this year. As bad as D has played , we are 5-0. There is no great team in the conference this year, with a potent offense AND a defense capable of slowing down the machine that is the Michigan offense. Our D, as bad as it has been, showed glimpses in the 2nd half of being average. That may well be the best offense we face the rest of the way. We are in for more gutwrenching games, due to defensive play, but can you imagine when our defense actually helps our offense by getting off the field on 3rd down. Our offense will break the opposing teams' will week in and week out. The future is so damn bright.
