As a long-time HL watcher, Donlon's teams quite simply gave people fits, both the people who had to play them and the people who had to watch. Despite a relative lack of talent, they were never any fun to play against (and not much fun to watch either); case in point being this year when Valpo mowed down the league and still lost to WSU twice. (VU looked/did better against Oregon.) If you liked watching 59-54 games, then you would have had fun, I guess.
The knock on Donlon is that he can't recruit. He got good players for his system, and development was also good, but there was never really anyone on his roster that you wish you'd had on your own. (Then there was the whole Tavares Sledge situation, but I blame the AD more for that.)
Which is really to say that he should be better in his current job than in his former. Good person, entertaining coach.

While I agree with your post in general, there is no doubt that the HL has taken a hit in recent years, from where it was.
It's gone from a league Valpo was ecstatic to join to a league they've outgrown--and it's less because of Valpo's success than because of the deterioration of the rest of the league as a whole. Obviously Butler leaving is a big part of that, but it's gone from a 2-bid league to a 1 (despite the fact they deserved to be a 2-bid this year, but that's another post that would become a negbang around here).

Impressive man, impressive family. (Anyone else think of "Mad Men" reading that article from Crain's?)
Not to be OT on an OT, but I'm coming back to MI to work for his son. Too bad I'll be a day late for the funeral.
Will be good to be back among the Blue! May we all go home after a big win. (Just...not the same win, of course.)

I would be fine with that, as the avatar implies, but I don't think it's a fit any more than it was when he was in HS in the area.
Might make up for, like, say 4%, of giving up on Zach Novak.

Rarely have I been so grateful for the class of this blog/forum as when I realized no one here has ever started a "monkey porn thread".
(I'm even more embarrassed that down here in SWFL people assume 'UM' means YTM now.)

Seeing Schlissel's comments alongside Bowlsby's, more or less, has me wondering at the apparent tension between wanting to treat (college) athletes as employees (or at least more like them) while not wanting to treat (college) students as customers.
Wondering how we resolve this--how do we have an ath. dept. that rewards its workers while still treating everyone else as stakeholders rather than a target market?
Could the students, for example, be something like stockholders in this comparison?

I don't understand why we're 'too good' for the CBI, though. It's not like we can't afford it; and it's not like we can't use some more experience. Heck, Walton might be back by the championship--and the CBI has that as a best-of-3 series which is pretty cool.
Is it because it's just been a trés long year for everyone what with preseason touring et al.?
|1 year 10 weeks ago||"John Beilein has already||
"John Beilein has already ruled out an appearance in the CBI or CIT tournaments"
Not quite accurate. The CIT already ruled us out because...we're not a mid-major. So basically all he did was say we're not going to the CBI, since we'll never be eligible for the CIT.
