7 weeks 11 hours ago There most definitely are

There most definitely are still places in the US where coming out or being perceived as gay could lead to severe discrimination and/or violence. I graduated from U of M in 2011, and I personally know more than one person who was gay bashed in Ann Arbor during my time as a student. This includes verbal and physical assault. So yes...it is still very much an issue even in a pretty liberal college town like A2.

And let's not forget that you can still be fired based on sexual orientation in 29 states, including Michigan.

28 weeks 4 hours ago I don't think Michigan is a

I don't think Michigan is a great team this year, but let's look at our four losses. Losses against the #1, #2, and #3 teams in the country, and a loss against Nebraska with a RS freshman behind center taking the first meaningful snaps of his career in a tough road environment. I think we have a better shot at this than some people might think.

29 weeks 33 min ago Weak schedule? I think ND is

Weak schedule? I think ND is overrated, but they beat Stanford, Oklahoma, and USC (yes, without Barkley, I know). I don't think you can call that a weak schedule.

47 weeks 1 hour ago The players did nothing

The players did nothing wrong. They should be able to transfer wherever they want. If that happens to be to another school under sanctions, then so be it. It's their choice and they should have that right.

We'll also be getting the Big Ten Conference Logo on all of our jerseys, per the football team's twitter.

The Yankees play the Mariners tonight, which means Ichiro will face his old team and home fans one last time. Very strange.

52 weeks 6 hours ago If one of the Wisconsin/MSU

If one of the Wisconsin/MSU games wins, it has to be the first one. I know the second one technically had more on the line since it was the title game, but the first one was far more memorable to me.

However, you have to give Under the Lights the edge, and I'm trying not to be biased (although it's hard, obviously). That game had everything! An epic comeback (we were down 17 in the 3rd quarter!) and 3 touchdowns in the final 1:12, including 2 in the final 30 seconds. The first Wisky/MSU game was exciting and memorable, but Under the Lights was insanity.

The dreaded double post. I appologize.

1 year 4 weeks ago Unfortunately, I graduated in

Unfortunately, I graduated in 2011 and therefore missed UTL. Talk about a disappointment. I wish I could have been there! The 2009 ND game probably pales in comparison to those who were at UTL, but it was probably the craziest the stadium ever got while I was a student at Michigan. I remember losing my voice from screaming so loudly and everyone just going absolutely insane when Tate made that final TD pass. Such an awesome moment. So 2009 ND, 2010 triple OT Illinois, or 2008 Wisconsin were definitely some crazy, crazy moments.

What type of press has this been getting in and around Michigan? I'm curious if it's just the MGoBlog/internet fans expressing displeasure or if it's more widespread than that.

Like a lot of other people, I canceled my subscription after they increased their prices and split their DVDs and online streaming into two separate services. This just might convince me to restart my subscription.

1 year 8 weeks ago Is it not lost on the MSU

Is it not lost on the MSU faithful that for 3 of those 4 years, we were as bad as we've ever been? I'll give them last year - they beat a good team, so good for them. But honestly, the other 3? Which teams with half a pulse DIDN'T beat us during those years? They all did! I just find it funny that they think it's some huge claim to fame and represents their ascension to glory when really those were the same teams getting beaten by Toledo and barely squeaking by UMass. Congrats, Sparty. You should be so proud!

1 year 9 weeks ago Jeremy Hellickson was hit in

Jeremy Hellickson was hit in the head by a ball during batting practice prior to today's game. Supposedly he was responsive and alert, but still went to the hospital of course. Hope he's okay.

ED: Supposedly he was hit by a homerun ball while he was throwing in the bullpen, so at least it wasn't a line drive. That's good news.

Oh, and Go Tigers.

1 year 10 weeks ago If they are good enough to

If they are good enough to leave early and play in the NBA, then they'll get that money eventually. While they are in college, they get all their necessities paid for through their athletic scholarships. It's not like they're struggling to eat while they're still in school.

1 year 10 weeks ago The Rays are definitely an

The Rays are definitely an exception to the norm, if only for the fact that they have the 2nd lowest payroll and can compete (and win) in the toughest division in baseball. But how much of an exception are they really? Let's look at the 2011 payrolls for the teams that got into the postseason last year.

Tampa Bay: 29th
Texas: 13th
Yankees: 1st
Detroit: 10th
Philadelphia: 2nd
St. Louis: 11th
Milwaukee: 17th
Arizona: 25th

3 of 8 teams (~38 percent) in the postseason were in the lower half of the league in payrolls. The same percentage was true for the 2010 season. That's not as lopsided as you might think. It seems to suggest that although it is certainly harder to compete with smaller payrolls, it might not be as much of an abberation as you suggest.

1 year 10 weeks ago What about the Rays? In 2011,

What about the Rays? In 2011, they had the second lowest payroll of any MLB team. They won the AL Wild Card. As of last year at least, the Orioles had the 3rd highest payroll in the AL East yet still finished dead last. (This is all according to CBSSports figures, fyi.)

Money helps teams win. There's no doubt about it. But there's obviously a lot more to it than that. Plus, there's a big difference between buying top free agents and developing awesome players from within. The Yankees have obviously done their share of purchasing players (CC, Tex, A-Rod, etc.). But at the same time, a lot of their big players came up through the Yankee farm system - Jeter, Rivera, Cano, Posada, Pettite, as well as guys like David Robertson,  Brett Gardner, Phil Hughes, and several others. So yes, the Yankees have the money to pay those guys to stay, but they are also the ones who developed that talent to begin with.

Of course there are the A-Rods and CCs of the world, but every team has some of that. I mean, look at Fielder's contract. If the Tigers win the World Series this year, then you could have the same "bought the championship" argument. They now have the 5th highest payroll in the MLB.

The dredded double post. My appologies.

1 year 10 weeks ago The NL East should be

The NL East should be interesting this year. The Phillies should still be very good thanks to their pitching, but they won't be as dominant as in years past with injuries to guys like Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. A lot of people are expecting big years from the Nats and possibly even the Marlins too, and Atlanta should compete as always. I normally don't follow the NL too much, but this could be an interesting division race. The same is true for the AL East, as Toronto is expected to improve this year as well. Should be a good season!

1 year 10 weeks ago The heart of the problem is

The heart of the problem is that a lot of people just don't understand the value of a college education. That's unfortunate. It always seems like the guys that complain about this are the 1% that make it to the NFL and thus don't see a need for a college education in the first place.  I wonder if the players who know they'll never make it professionally are more appreciative of their free education?
