Turley's got a bunch of good assistants

If we're not getting Turley himself, getting one of his proteges could still be a good move.

Current Stanford D-Lineman indicates Turley is staying

Harrison Phillips just tweeted that Turley will still be the S&C coach at Stanford...

ESPN reporting Lance Anderson turned down Michigan

If true, hopefully Harbaugh makes it official with Durkin before Oklahoma or someone else swoops in.

It's hard to say

Given their short tenures as DCs, but I'd argue Lance has done more with less - for a longer time - than Durkin. It's hard to recruit true blue-chip athletes to Stanford, but a lot of guys Lance has coached have gone on to the NFL (or are likely to), including Chase Thomas, Shayne Skov, Trent Murphy, and 3-4 current Stanford linebackers. Pretty impressive track record of identifying and developing talent.

That said: can't go wrong either way. There's a reason JH is all over Durkin.

I don't see Harbaugh "playing nice" with Stanford

Observing Coach Harbaugh for a number of years, I don't think he sees this as "screwing over" Stanford. Rather, I think JH sees this as simple competition for talent.

If Stanford wants to keep Anderson, Randy Hart, or anyone else, make them an offer they can't refuse. Until and unless Stanford does that, Harbaugh sees Stanford's coaches as fair game, despite his history with that program.

One more potential Stanford -> UM hire

Haven't seen this mentioned on the site, but I'm hearing from folks who are pretty connected to the Stanford program that Harbaugh is aiming to hire Stanford DL coach Randy Hart for the same position at UM. With the rumors about Anderson and the news about Turley, it sounds like Harbaugh is really raiding the pantry back on The Farm.

Stanford's defensive performance over the past several years is pretty well-known, but Hart's resume is still worth a look. Very impressive.

One question: would Anderson want to be a co-DC?

Anderson has a good thing going at Stanford. I could see Stanford offering him a raise and him staying in Palo Alto. With the Durkin rumors swirling, I have to wonder if Anderson would be willing to come to Michigan to be a co-DC. My sense is that we get one or the other as DC, but not both.

One underappreciated aspect of Anderson's tenure

Anderson is known as Stanford's ace recruiter and, after this past season, as a very solid first-year DC.

One thing Stanford insiders know that a lot of other folks don't appreicate is that Anderson also played a huge role as the liason between admissions and the football program. Getting recruits (i.e. 10th graders) to take more AP classes, motivating them to retake the SAT, getting admissions to be transparent about what recruits would have to do to get in, etc.

Obviously navigating the academic issues isn't an issue at Michigan to the same extent as it is at Stanford, but you've still got to like what a guy like Anderson would do for us in that regard.

Turley was a huge part of building Stanford's program

Coach Harbaugh is obviously  the man most associated with Stanford's rise from doormat to powerhouse, but Coach Turley was absolutely instrumental in that process. As a program, Stanford's player-games lost to injury pre/post-Turley was unbelievable. This is a huge win for Michigan that will fly under the radar for casual fans.

Side note, Stanford considers Lance Anderson to be the program's ace recruiter. He also did a very nice job as DC this year; Stanford's offensive futility sort of masked a defense that was one of the very best in the country.

Hogan background

Hogan's from the DC area, and his dad recently passed away. It's possible he'll transfer to a mid-Atlantic school to be closer to family for a year before taking a shot at the NFL.

Most likely, though, he stays at Stanford, where he has the starting gig locked down, for another year before trying to make the jump.

Kevin Hogan (Stanford QB)

Highly doubt Hogan comes to UM as a grad transfer (although would love it if he did). He has the starting gig locked down at Stanford until he exhausts his eligibility.

I have seen some speculation that he may transfer to a mid-Atlantic school to be closer to home, due to the recent passing of his father.

David Shaw

First time commenter. Palo Alto native, long-time Stanford season-ticket holder, recent UM MBA grad. Thought I could offer some insight on Shaw.

I think he's easily more of a long-shot than Jim Harbaugh. In no particular order, here's why:

  • Essentially has a lifetime contract at Stanford. If he wins six games per season and runs a clean program, he'll never be on the hot seat.
  • Takes every opportunity to explicitly re-state his dedication to Stanford and lack of interest in any other position, even at the NFL level
  • Stanford is simultaneously a better and easier job than Michigan right now. Very low pressure from alumni or media (see above). In the minds of high school kids with grades, Stanford is a bigger-name program than Michigan (which is incredible to consider). Better level of competition, even with the addition of Colorado and Utah.
  • Just bought a (large, expensive, beachfront) home near Santa Cruz, and his kids just started school in the Bay Area
  • Has no connection to UM (that I know of, anyway)

Shaw would be a home run hire, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Much more likely to get a Harbaugh.
