8.25 wins per year?

Nevermind, your comment applies to both.

We typically don't have basements in California, so most of us live in our parents' garages. Same deal, you just don't have to deal with stairs.

The state of Michigan was transporting prisoners to a courthouse 60 miles away for their motions to be heard. The state had to rent busses, pay drivers and security guards to make the trip. A social worker (I bet you can guess who) worked through the regulatory system and with the various unions to change the system such that the judge and a few court officials made the trip to the prison instead. The savings to the state was around $300K annually, but you go ahead and continue making ignorant statements about social workers.

let's avoid the ad hominems, OK? You're better than that, even if your counterpart isn't.

I had an MGoArgument a few months ago about the relative desirability of Wisconsin and Michigan as coaching jobs. I'll admit, I was way wrong. People just can't wait to jump ship over there. What the heck is going on in Madison?

I understand your point. UofM has pretty consistenly had the highest rated School of Social Work according to US News. An MSW from the #1 school might get him double the $30K you mentioned. It's not great, but it's not peanuts, either. My Dad got his MSW from UofM and put three kids through UofM.
If he can get a look from an NFL team, he'd be better off financially going that route. I don't remember being that impressed by his skills as a WR, but if he focuses on that, perhaps he could latch on as a 3rd or 4th WR.
I wouldn't draft Funchess in the first round. Maybe not even in the second. I'd want to know what happened to him between the ND and Ohio State games first before making that pick.

Beilein will learn from this and use it as a teaching tool. Sh!t happens. NJIT shot the lights out. We have to do a better job defending the perimeter when Spike and DW2* are in the game together.
*I'm not trying to be cool, I just can't remember how to spell his first name. Derek or Dereck or Derick?

Everybody laughing at this hire realizes he's been coaching at Oregon State, right? In the seven seasons prior to him taking over in '97 they won 14 games. 2 wins per year. He's taken them to 8 of their 17 Bowl Games, and got the program moving in the right direction before Erickson took over for four years. They have a stadium with a capacity of 45,674, they are on the west coast so no one on the east coast sees them play, and they are not Oregon. i.e., they don't have Phil Knight's money to build a program. He does more with less. Contrast that to Pelini who does less with more and I think Nebraska fans will be pleasantly surprised by this hire, if they are being honest with themselves.

One season does not constitute the sum total of a coach's resume.

If he was on this board, he would have been negged to Bolivian long ago.

since that other thread was deleted, I'll just put this here:
Yep, there are 24 tattoo parlors in Lincoln. I think that rumor might have legs...
There are 58 tattoo parlors in Columbus, but I trust in Tressel to make his system work even with fewer than half the tattoo parlors he had before. The question is, can he get the car/tractor dealers on board?

I mentioned ~4 guys. Mattison and Manning are excellent recruiters. Let them keep doing that and have Austin co-ordinate the D and coach the DBs. Ferigno couldn't get Funchess to block. Neither could Hecklinski. Is Heck the guy who coached up Gallon into an all-world player, or the coach who couldn't get Funchess to care? At some point, it's on the players to perform.
Nussmeier was hailed as an excellent hire. I wasn't on that bandwagon, but I also realize Rome wasn't built in a day. He didn't forget everything that allowed him to be successful at Washington and Bama. He had a QB who couldn't throw a deep ball. Period. End of sentence.
The o-line was performing better as the year went on, so I'm not in the fire Funk group, but it may be time for Jackson to retire.
As bad as things were this year, we were -16 in TO margin. How much of that 5-7 record is attributable to rotten luck? Nuss didn't coach Gardner to throw balls off of Funchess and Dever's fingertips into the hands of waiting DBs. That's just bad luck. As head coach, Brady has to take the responsibility for the 5-7 record, and the time mis-management, but we're a lot closer to being relevant than some are willing to acknowledge (how's that for a wishy-washy answer.)

Everyone was overjoyed that we got Nussmeier from 'bama, but after one mediocre season you are ready to get rid of him?
It's not that important to keep Ferrigno to me, but it is to the #2 TE. He also coached up Butt and was able to recruit Bunting. We'll see how the offense fares with both of them on the field next year.
Austin was also DC at Florida under Meyer. From his bio, "Prior to joining the Ravens, Austin earned his first stint as defensive coordinator with the University of Florida in 2010. His Gators defense tallied 22 interceptions that season, ranking fourth in the NCAA and returning four of those picks for touchdowns. In SEC games, Florida led the conference in total defense by allowing only 310.8 yards per game."

I can only imagine what he'd do with the cheerleaders...
|2 weeks 5 hours ago||Spike||
All of the pre-season PG chatter focused on whether or not Walton was going to make the freshman to sophomore jump that Morris and Burke made. I didn't see any mention of Spike making a jump, but it appears that he has. The one constant in all this? Beilein. That man is a genius.
|2 weeks 6 hours ago||Teryl Austin||
He solves so many problems. He worked with Mattison in Baltimore, so maybe he gets Greg to stay another year or two. He's a defensive guru, so maybe he lets Nussmeier stay and further implement his system. Ferrigno stays so Clark comes back at TE. He's a DB coach, so maybe he coaches them up and we can improve on our DB stats (5 INTs, 27 BrUps total compared to 18/50 for our opponents.) Roy Manning can return to front seven coaching and leave the DBs to Austin, and Manning can stay on as the recruiting guru.
We were -16 in TO margin this year. If we can get more INTs and Nuss is allowed to coach up Morris/Speight/Malzone for another year, we're not that far from being relevant.
If we can get a Harbaugh, great. But if they are intent on staying in the NFL, why not hire a guy who mentored for three years under John and who has done amazing things with the Lions defense? They are #2 in fewest yards allowed behind only the Seahawks. Defense wins championships.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||... this season||
He won games in 2008, 2010, and 2011. He even won 8 games in 2012 with a ridiculously hard schedule. The team was -16 in turnover margin this season. Had his luck continued from 2011, or at least evened out instead of bottoming out, he'd still be around. How do you coach creating turnovers defensively and preventing them offensively?
I had problems with his clock management this year, and a few other things, but the guy can recruit. He took a gamble by firing Borges and restarting things on offense, again, and it backfired on him. At least he was willing to change in that regard.

The first time they played, Oregon was missing 4 starting OL. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ducks win by 21 points.
