Looking back, I think the Akron game is where the tide began to turn. The week before we beat Notre Dame at home in prime-time by double digits with College Gameday broadcasting from Ann Arbor. We scored 41 points against a defense with a lot of future NFL players and came out of the game riding high with big expectations for the future. The next week, a terrible Akron team came to town not having won a road game in years and was inches away from giving Michigan the worst loss in program history. Even though we won, the team was never really the same after that. We almost lost to a UConn team that fired their coach the next week and then came the horribly coached Penn State game, and the disasters against MSU and Nebraska.
Prior to 2013, the coaching staff had some horrible gameplans against Notre Dame and Ohio State, didn't seem to make good use of Denard Robinson, didn't recruit a QB ahead of Shane Morris, tried Garnder at receiver even though Bellomy clearly wasn't ready etc. But I still thought we'd be OK. The 5 losses we had in 2012 came against some of the best teams in the country. The Akron game is where you began to see something was very wrong.
I'd like to know the story behind John Bacon's press pass being revoked. What reason was given and what issues did Brandon have with Three and Out to justify such a decision? Everything in his book was factually accurate and didn't really portray Brandon in a negative light.
Also, how was it OK to take Bacon's press pass but not Mark Snyder and Mike Rosenberg's? Snyder is still on the Michigan beat like nothing happened and Rosenberg still had access when he was working with the Free Press. I would think after what they pulled the athletic department would have been justified in refusing them access and telling the Freep to send different reporters.
I also heard that Brandon visited the MDen he didn't want to see any copies of Three and Out in the open. I thought this was an absurd interent rumor at the time and no way could he be that petty, but after reading Endzone, I'm not so sure.
The first time players ran to the student section to celebrate was the 2002 Penn State game. It was the first Overtime game in Michigan Stadium history, and after the Chris Perry scored the game winning touchdown, the players had an impromptu celebration by running over to the student section, which had never been seen before and was considered a special moment. This was also done after the win over Penn State in 2005 and maybe Michigan State in 2004 (I wasn't there for that one but think I remember reading about it). It did not become a regular thing until Rich Rodriguez got here. He wanted the players to sing the fight song with the student section after every home win. So it started after we beat Miami (OH) in 2008 and continued all through his tenure. When Hoke got here, the players were used to running to the student section after every home win so they continued doing it.
Personally, I don't think players need to celebrate like that after wins over the likes of Eastern Michigan, but that's just me.

It certainly wasn't Vance Bedford, who encouraged Demar Dorsey to go to Michigan. I would say Ron English and his staff were recruiting in-state more than anyone.
He probably keeps most of the coaching staff - even DeBord. Attrition isn't as bad, maybe Mallett and Arrington stay. That being said, I don't think he would have been qualified for the position at that time. Hoke himself even says he wanted but wasn't ready and needed those 2 years at SDSU.
What did Dhani Jones and Marlin Jackson do to embarrass themselves at this golf outing? I've been reading this blog everyday since 2007 and don't remember ever hearing about that?
I'm all for appropriate music being piped in. Lose Yourself and Seven Nation Army get the crowd going and also get the players into it. Those songs amp people up in a way that the band isn't able to.
I like when the band plays Don't Stop Believing but hate when it comes on the speakers, especially in the first half against teams like Eastern Michigan!? We need to keep believing that we can beat MAC teams? They only time that song should come on is in the 4th quarter of a big game, or when we are about to win a game and are still Big Ten championship contenders. Neil Diamond is annoying and cliche, it doesn't get the crowd amped up and and does nothing for the players. 'In The Big House' is cheesy as well.
I think the promos for other Michigan Athletics are fine and bring much needed awareness to those programs.
I'd rather schedule a revenge game against a team that previously humiliated us than a game against Eastern Michigan -which, face it, would probably be the alternative.

I seriously doubt App St. will beat Michigan again, and I think that letting them hold that win over us for all eternity is bad. Acting like we're afraid to play an FCS school is worse for the program than scheduling this game. I don't like all of Dave Brandon's decisions since he became AD, but I like this and hope we will schedule more 'revenge' games like this in the future to prove that if you beat us once, we'll come right back at you.
One idea would be for everyone to play everyone else twice. Once at home and once on the road. It's a novel concept that would ensure fairness, sell more tickets and improve TV ratings. It wouldn't screw season ticket holders out of missing games against MSU, OSU, Wisconsin and other top teams and would improve everyone's strength of schedule. 22 conference games. Is 4 extra conference games really too much to ask? Michigan probably loses money when they schedule the likes of Bryant University.
This list wasn't just about games with exciting finishes. I also took into account the significance of each game. The 14 point win over OSU may not have had a climactic finish, but it was a win over Ohio State (our only win against Tressel), it gave Michigan the outright Big Ten Championship and ruined the Buckeyes National Title hopes. These games are all significant in the context of Michigan football history. People will be talking about the performance of Michigan in these games for decades. They certainly won't be talking about how good we played in losses to OSU and Texas.

It's anyway the wind blows for Gregg Doyle. After the Michigan - Notre Dame game, he wrote that Michigan and Notre Dame were back and that all their haters would now have to shut up. Now Charlie Weis is about to be fired and Michigan's season doesn't go well so Doyle changes his opinion completely.
He says Rich Rod is bad but not because of play-calling or coaching ability, but because he whines to the media. A lot of coaches whine, it doesn't mean they can't coach. He tries to spin the fact that a lot of players transferred was because they wanted to get away from him, it had nothing to do with the fact that those players didn't fit the system and were meant for a pro-style offense.
If Rodriguez gets it together and Michigan starts winning again, Doyle will claim he liked him all along.
Michigan's Bob Ufer was the greatest homer announcer of all time. Beckmann and Brandstatter are homers, Mario Impemba and Rod Allen, Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond, George Blaha -all homers. That's just what local sports announcers do, and there's nothing wrong with it. It was an exciting finish. I do find his trademark "Touchdown, Detroit Lions!" really annoying and I think at times he tries to be too hip but its nothing wrong if the announcer for the Detroit Lions radio network gets excited during the few times the Lions do something good.
Unless Gameday is coming to Ann Arbor (which I doubt), Desmond won't be here. Woodson, Braylon, Brady etc all have games the next day so they can't come. Miami does play Thursday this week, so Chad Henne and Jake Long could make it to Michigan, though neither one had a good record against OSU. One possibility I think would be good is Tim Biakabutuka to honor his 300 yard rushing performance in '95 against the undefeated Bucks. Brian Griese was 3-0 as a starter against OSU, so if he's not calling a game for ESPN he might be there. Another person I'd love to see come back is Amani Toomer. He's now retired after a long and prosperous NFL career and it would be great if we could bring him back, he said a few years ago he really didn't keep in touch with people from his Michigan days so he may feel a bit estranged from the University but honoring him could smooth that over. Chris Perry is out of the NFL now and he had a great game against OSU in 2003, which incidentally is the last time we beat them, so he would be a good choice to bring back also.
You can't make the conclusion from this data that Rich Rod is not as good a big game coach as Lloyd was. Obviously he was dealing with a lot less talent at West Virginia than Lloyd had at Michigan. When Lloyd took over as Head Coach he had a good team already in place for what he wanted to do, unlike Rich Rod in his first season at WVU and his first season at Michigan. Plus Lloyd had a lot more chances against Top 25 teams, playing an average of 5.46 ranked teams per season. Rich Rod has only played an average of 3.75. The Big East is obviously not as good as the Big Ten and it's also easier for mediocre Big Ten teams to be ranked then mediocre Big East ones. I think Lloyd was a great coach who doesn't get enough credit for what he accomplished but I also think Rich Rod can over time be just as good if not better.
Keith Jackson came back to Michigan Stadium for the 2003 Michigan-Ohio State game. He asked ABC if he could broadcast the 100th anniversary of the rivalry and was granted his wish.
