I'll bite. I think Hoke deserves one more year. Having said that, I think he's done a bad job this year. So why one more year?
1. 0 seniors at OL.
2. 0 seniors at WR.
3. 0 seniors at RB (depth chart looks like soph / soph - untill green got hurt).
4. QB who doesn't fit his system.
5. From my eyes, a steadily improving OL that could be a monster next year.
None of that is particullarly Hoke's fault (to be clear NOT blaming RR).
If we run out a coach after 3 years (RR) and then run out a coach after 4 years (Hoke) no one will want to come here regardless of who the athletic director is. A coach should be allowed to build his program and let it stand on its merit. IMHO, I think that takes 5 years.
It may sound like I'm afraid of change, I'm not. (I just joined a start up at 38!!!) I just think we as a community have to give any coach ample opprotunity to suceed. I understand some of you think he has already had that, but that's where I come from. If next year, its more of the same, then yes broom him.

Congrats Coach Carr! It occurs to me, that if they had the 4 team playoff that starts next year, he probably would have had UM in it in 1997, 2003, and 2006. I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Again, congrats to coach a class act and thanks for all he has done for UM.

One. We have one rivalry. Ohio.
We, as a fan base, measure all our successes and failures on the relation to that school. Everything else is theater. Don't get me wrong, ND is nice but it was forced upon us by ADs and TV execs. MSU is nice, but a lot us have friends, family with ties to East Lansing. I don't hate MSU. Many have already pointed out that our historical success makes us "rivals" with many, many schools.
Toledo war, Bo, Woody. Griffin & Woodson. 10 year war, snow bowl, '69, 313, go for two.
Nothing against ND & MSU, but last game of the season, it really feels like UM has four phases of the season ( in chronological order):
Sans maybe iron bowl, Red Sox / Yankees, USSR/ USA, there is nothing like it in all of sport......
Just my $0.02 (like most things on the internet )

Your anger is misplaced. The cable companies blocked that one. DirecTV is not a broadband provider, so no cable / internet company (Comcast, Xfinity, Time Warner, etc, etc) is going to let you use their own infrastructure to by-pass their own products (that is no ESPN3 on their broadband unless your paying them for ESPN3).
At least that's their rationale. I think its monopolistic.
5 years, this will all be moot when all channels will be apps on your Apple TV, Roku, or Xbox. TV's are a changing, and some companies want to fight it and bleed you dry, which of course ends up bleeding them dry as customers go running to providers who you give you what you want and how much you want without having to pay for a bunch of other crap. Its nearly a perfect reply of the music industry the last decade. When was the last time you saw a Tower Records?
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Disagree. There are cases||
There are cases where the Harvard degree won't open any more doors than the UM degree or give an incremental benefit that isn't worth the cost of tuition.
I'm specifically thinking of engineering.
I've worked for NASA and DoD for 13 years, and rarely have encountered Ivy league graduates during my career. The ones I have encountered haven't had doors opened for them that weren't available to graduates at other top engineering schools.
If she's undecided or doesn't want engineering, than yeah Harvard. The opprotunities in business, public policy, or law are just too great and no university can compete with them. Especially if she wants to do something that might be constrained to a limited number of academic positions (ie theorhetical astrophysics or 15th centurary Irish lit). In those cases, having an Ivy league degree gives you the cache to land one of the few academic positions available.
But if she wants to do engineering, then UM.

5 star depth at RB? Yes please....
Granted its a long shot, but here's guessing that Peppers does reel in a suprise stud for us with this type of attitude. Gotta love the passion for UM
|2 years 26 weeks ago||The physical adjustment I'm||
The physical adjustment I'm more concerned about is how well his body responds to getting hit by guys 3-4 years older and are stars from around the nation, as opposed to folks who look like me ;)
Nothing to back it up, but for running backs I get the sense that pounding is more of a transition then putting on lbs.

Its offseason, so raise your tolerance for things that aren't 100% maize and blue. Besides, commenting on the relative success of a conference member in a post that calls out conference member rankings is fair game.

Give me a break. 2005 we lost 4 games by 4 points or less in a season riddled with injuries.
2007 we were 9-4.
I'll give you that we underperformed in both seasons, and had one of our programs (neigh the sports') most embarrassing losses, but we were a long way from "damn lucky to not be under .500".
There's no doubt that Carr's later years showed signs of slippage, but your comment just reeks of unnecessary spite and is just factually not true.
|2 years 33 weeks ago||Yep. There is a huge and||
Yep. There is a huge and unfortunate misconception by many that a charge only occurs when the defender is stationary. Blasting through someone's chest is almost always a charge, regardless of whether ones feet are moving. You beat someone to a spot, you have a right to be there.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Correct. There was never a||
Correct. There was never a tribe of "Illini" or Chief Illiniwek.
The suit worn by the Illinois mascot, was somehow donated in the 1920's by a Sioux tribe (nothing to do with Illinois or Illinois' native americans). The dance performed was based on a traiditional Illinois native american "happy" dance, but it was altered for apperances sake when performed in a football stadium. Also, Fighting Illini was the term endeared upon Illinois residents who voluntarily took up arms during WW1, but many take to imply a war-like tribe of native americans. (Their memorial stadium is actually a WW1 memorial).
All these loose pieces together allowed various political factions to somehow unite against their mascot. The factonization of the Illinois mascot over all those sources no doubt contributed to said mascot's retirement.
Contrast that to Florida State who had one tribe to negotiate with.

Illinois' take is:
1. They had a slush fund scandal in 60's when Pete Elliott was the AD.
There's a few more things going back to the Yost / Red Grange era that I can't remember, but the bottom line is the two universities haven't always seen eye to eye. Contrast that to the closeness Bo/Moeller/Carr had ( still do) to the Iowa administration and coaching staff
|3 years 2 weeks ago||For me, its a case by case||
For me, its a case by case basis. I think exceptional players sometimes stuggle with coaching later in life because they have unrealistic expectations on player capabilities and can't comprehend the need for motivational techniques (because motivation has never been an issue for them). So in the case of Woodson, its unclear in my mind whether he would be an effictive coach.
I also don't think coaching searches should limit themselves exclusively to UM players or family tree. See one Mr. Schembechler.
|3 years 3 weeks ago||For the life of me, I don't||
For the life of me, I don't understand why we can't work with B1G , OSU, and UNL to break up the let's play 2 of the historical top 10 teams on the road thing to once a year, every other year. I guess it would require either us or one of those schools playing us to have 2 road games in sequential years, but I think I'd be fine with that to even things out in the long run.
Tangential to that thought.... the B1G schedule in 2016 is especially brutal.

|3 years 4 weeks ago||I agree 100%. I'd also add||
I agree 100%. I'd also add this policy protects UM as well as the kid. For example, say a kid is wavering, takes visits to other schools but Hoke & Co bank on him receiving a scholly from UM. Come signing day, UM could be left holding the bag with no real options if the kid chooses elsewhere.
|3 years 4 weeks ago||Eh. I have hard time blaming||
Eh. I have hard time blaming Martin for this. The article states he was signed. Martin was probably thinking it was normal work rythm time, and yes, I do believe he should be able to turn off his cell phone for an hour.
In anycase, its probably all for the best. We've got a good thing going in bball, I'm not sure Pitino would have thrived in an environment where bball was always the bridesmaid never the bride, and I don't think UM would have been as forgiving as Lousville was with respect to his personal short comings.
Ships passing in the night, water on the under bridge, your favorite cliche here, but both sides seem better off for it IMO.

Purdue rushes out to a 18-0 run due to 9 Robbie Hummel tip ins. AIRBHG screams "HEY this is FOOTBAWL" and goes east to blow up Hummel's knee for the 3rd time allowing UM to get the 1pt safety. We get 4 td's and denard finishes off the half with a 75 yr field goal.

^^^. This. The only thing I would add is the Freeh report puts the blame squarely not just on Paterno et al, but the entire "culture" at Penn State. The kids on current scholly will be fine one or another ( transfer -- whatever ). But that enire University, athletic department, and fan base must give their pound of flesh.

Patience all.... This is all part of the negotiations. Unfortunately, the SEC laid gauntlets down with their comments last week --- so I see this as posturing.
Delany has been an excellent commish, and he is taking a measured, thoughtful look at this and trying to do whats best for B1G. No reason to panic.

I work for a NASA contractor and you are spot on. I'm actually a little sick of people calling this a "commercial" venture as SpaceX has been funded at least 50% by NASA since about 2003 or 2004.
That being said, I congratulate them. They did prove it can be done more efficiently and cheaper -- at least to this point.
I wish them well on their rendezvous later this week, and hope they can get a man rated vehicle up soon.
