The silent majority....

I belive there is quite a bit

I belive there is quite a bit of research out there to "crowd source" the answer or the truth.  Prior to the days of social media, many advocated a stock market model -- where the general populous could buy / sell stock in certain events.  I seem to recall the DoD or CIA stood one up for geo-political events shortly after 9/11 that was taken down, because buying stock in possible terrorist actions wasn't perceived very well :)

In anycase, I think you could argue that blogging and message boards have an interesting big data component to them....

Then inform me.  Or do

Then inform me.  Or do anonymous internet snark that keeps me from posting on message boards.  Either way I don't care.

I'll bite.  I think Hoke

I'll bite.  I think Hoke deserves one more year.  Having said that, I think he's done a bad job this year.  So why one more year?

1.  0 seniors at OL.

2.  0 seniors at WR.

3.  0 seniors at RB (depth chart looks like soph / soph - untill green got hurt).

4.  QB who doesn't fit his system.

5.  From my eyes, a steadily improving OL that could be a monster next year.

None of that is particullarly Hoke's fault (to be clear NOT blaming RR).

If we run out a coach after 3 years (RR) and then run out a coach after 4 years (Hoke) no one will want to come here regardless of who the athletic director is.  A coach should be allowed to build his program and let it stand on its merit.  IMHO, I think that takes 5 years.

It may sound like I'm afraid of change, I'm not.  (I just joined a start up at 38!!!)  I just think we as a community have to give any coach ample opprotunity to suceed.  I understand some of you think he has already had that, but that's where I come from.  If next year, its more of the same, then yes broom him.

Congrats Coach Carr! It Congrats Coach Carr! It occurs to me, that if they had the 4 team playoff that starts next year, he probably would have had UM in it in 1997, 2003, and 2006. I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Again, congrats to coach a class act and thanks for all he has done for UM.
One. We have one rivalry. One. We have one rivalry. Ohio. We, as a fan base, measure all our successes and failures on the relation to that school. Everything else is theater. Don't get me wrong, ND is nice but it was forced upon us by ADs and TV execs. MSU is nice, but a lot us have friends, family with ties to East Lansing. I don't hate MSU. Many have already pointed out that our historical success makes us "rivals" with many, many schools. Toledo war, Bo, Woody. Griffin & Woodson. 10 year war, snow bowl, '69, 313, go for two. Nothing against ND & MSU, but last game of the season, it really feels like UM has four phases of the season ( in chronological order): 1. Preseason 2. B1G 3. Ohio 4. Bowl Sans maybe iron bowl, Red Sox / Yankees, USSR/ USA, there is nothing like it in all of sport...... Just my $0.02 (like most things on the internet )
Your anger is misplaced.  The

Your anger is misplaced.  The cable companies blocked that one.  DirecTV is not a broadband provider, so no cable / internet company (Comcast, Xfinity, Time Warner, etc, etc) is going to let you use their own infrastructure to by-pass their own products (that is no ESPN3 on their broadband unless your paying them for ESPN3).

At least that's their rationale.  I think its monopolistic.

5 years, this will all be moot when all channels will be apps on your Apple TV, Roku, or Xbox.  TV's are a changing, and some companies want to fight it and bleed you dry, which of course ends up bleeding them dry as customers go running to providers who you give you what you want and how much you want without having to pay for a bunch of other crap.  Its nearly a perfect reply of the music industry the last decade.  When was the last time you saw a Tower Records?

Disagree.
There are cases

Disagree.

There are cases where the Harvard degree won't open any more doors than the UM degree or give an incremental benefit that isn't worth the cost of tuition.

I'm specifically thinking of engineering.

I've worked for NASA and DoD for 13 years, and rarely have encountered Ivy league graduates during my career.  The ones I have encountered haven't had doors opened for them that weren't available to graduates at other top engineering schools.

If she's undecided or doesn't want engineering, than yeah Harvard.  The opprotunities in business, public policy, or law are just too great and no university can compete with them.  Especially if she wants to do something that might be constrained to a limited number of academic positions (ie theorhetical astrophysics or 15th centurary Irish lit).  In those cases, having an Ivy league degree gives you the cache to land one of the few academic positions available.

But if she wants to do engineering, then UM.

5 star depth at RB?  Yes

5 star depth at RB?  Yes please....

Granted its a long shot, but here's guessing that Peppers does reel in a suprise stud for us with this type of attitude.  Gotta love the passion for UM

The physical adjustment I'm The physical adjustment I'm more concerned about is how well his body responds to getting hit by guys 3-4 years older and are stars from around the nation, as opposed to folks who look like me ;) Nothing to back it up, but for running backs I get the sense that pounding is more of a transition then putting on lbs.

Its offseason, so raise your tolerance for things that aren't 100% maize and blue.  Besides, commenting on the relative success of a conference member in a post that calls out conference member rankings is fair game.

Give me a break.  2005 we

Give me a break.  2005 we lost 4 games by 4 points or less in a season riddled with injuries.

2007 we were 9-4.

I'll give you that we underperformed in both seasons, and had one of our programs (neigh the sports') most embarrassing losses, but we were a long way from "damn lucky to not be under .500".

There's no doubt that Carr's later years showed signs of slippage, but your comment just reeks of unnecessary spite and is just factually not true.

Yep. There is a huge and Yep. There is a huge and unfortunate misconception by many that a charge only occurs when the defender is stationary. Blasting through someone's chest is almost always a charge, regardless of whether ones feet are moving. You beat someone to a spot, you have a right to be there.
Correct.  There was never a

Correct.  There was never a tribe of "Illini" or Chief Illiniwek.

The suit worn by the Illinois mascot, was somehow donated in the 1920's by a Sioux tribe (nothing to do with Illinois or Illinois' native americans).  The dance performed was based on a traiditional Illinois native american "happy" dance, but it was altered for apperances sake when performed in a football stadium.  Also, Fighting Illini was the term endeared upon Illinois residents who voluntarily took up arms during WW1, but many take to imply a war-like tribe of native americans.  (Their memorial stadium is actually a WW1 memorial).

All these loose pieces together allowed various political factions to somehow unite against their mascot.  The factonization of the Illinois mascot over all those sources no doubt contributed to said mascot's retirement.

Contrast that to Florida State who had one tribe to negotiate with.

Spot on.  Data to back you

Illinois' take is:
1. They
Illinois' take is: 1. They had a slush fund scandal in 60's when Pete Elliott was the AD. 2. Gary Moeller wasn't successful there and Bo lambasted the UI administration for lack of support. 3. Bo hated Mike White's use of juco transfers and was vocal about it in the 80's. Illinois actually threatened to leave for the big12! 4. 1989 final four. 5. Nancy Cantor. There's a few more things going back to the Yost / Red Grange era that I can't remember, but the bottom line is the two universities haven't always seen eye to eye. Contrast that to the closeness Bo/Moeller/Carr had ( still do) to the Iowa administration and coaching staff
For me, its a case by case

For me, its a case by case basis.  I think exceptional players sometimes stuggle with coaching later in life because they have unrealistic expectations on player capabilities and can't comprehend the need for motivational techniques (because motivation has never been an issue for them).  So in the case of Woodson, its unclear in my mind whether he would be an effictive coach.

I also don't think coaching searches should limit themselves exclusively to UM players or family tree.  See one Mr. Schembechler.

For the life of me, I don't

For the life of me, I don't understand why we can't work with B1G , OSU, and UNL to break up the let's play 2 of the historical top 10 teams on the road thing to once a year, every other year.  I guess it would require either us or one of those schools playing us to have 2 road games in sequential years, but I think I'd be fine with that to even things out in the long run.

Tangential to that thought.... the B1G schedule in 2016 is especially brutal.

Btw, there was an absolutely Btw, there was an absolutely in excussible PI call on Pitt that extended a nd td drive during this game....
Absolutely correct. Of issue Absolutely correct. Of issue though, is personally attacking the kid, stating he will never be good, or that you could have done a better job.
I just moved to NoVa from I just moved to NoVa from Houston this year. I thought I was done with this crap. Oh we'll, got candles, batteries, crackers , and alcohol. So I'll be ok....
I agree 100%. I'd also add I agree 100%. I'd also add this policy protects UM as well as the kid. For example, say a kid is wavering, takes visits to other schools but Hoke & Co bank on him receiving a scholly from UM. Come signing day, UM could be left holding the bag with no real options if the kid chooses elsewhere.
Eh.  I have hard time blaming

Eh.  I have hard time blaming Martin for this.  The article states he was signed.  Martin was probably thinking it was normal work rythm time, and yes, I do believe he should be able to turn off his cell phone for an hour.

In anycase, its probably all for the best.  We've got a good thing going in bball, I'm not sure Pitino would have thrived in an environment where bball was always the bridesmaid never the bride, and I don't think UM would have been as forgiving as Lousville was with respect to his personal short comings.

Ships passing in the night, water on the under bridge, your favorite cliche here, but both sides seem better off for it IMO.

Purdue rushes out to a 18-0

Purdue rushes out to a 18-0 run due to 9 Robbie Hummel tip ins.  AIRBHG screams "HEY this is FOOTBAWL" and goes east to blow up Hummel's knee for the 3rd time allowing UM to get the 1pt safety.  We get 4 td's and denard finishes off the half with a 75 yr field goal.

^^^. This. The only thing I ^^^. This. The only thing I would add is the Freeh report puts the blame squarely not just on Paterno et al, but the entire "culture" at Penn State. The kids on current scholly will be fine one or another ( transfer -- whatever ). But that enire University, athletic department, and fan base must give their pound of flesh.

Patience all....  This is all

Patience all....  This is all part of the negotiations.  Unfortunately, the SEC laid gauntlets down with their comments last week --- so I see this as posturing.

Delany has been an excellent commish, and he is taking a measured, thoughtful look at this and trying to do whats best for B1G.  No reason to panic.

I work for a NASA contractor

I work for a NASA contractor and you are spot on.  I'm actually a little sick of people calling this a "commercial" venture as SpaceX has been funded at least 50% by NASA since about 2003 or 2004.

That being said, I congratulate them.  They did prove it can be done more efficiently and cheaper -- at least to this point.

I wish them well on their rendezvous later this week, and hope they can get a man rated vehicle up soon.

I agree 100%.  I'll even add

I agree 100%.  I'll even add he doesn't make these comments if Bo were still alive.  That might even upset me more.  In the 20 years or so between him attending and Bo passing, he had ample opprotunity to make his point and didn't.

EDIT:  Oops.  Sorry.  This was supposed to be in response to orobs comment.

I disagree.  I understand

I disagree.  I understand time heels all wounds, but the Fab Five set back the basketball program more than a decade -- almost 2 decades.

The wins were vacated.  The banners down.  The $$$ returned.  And we are just now starting to come out of stentch of what was probably the darkest hour in MBB history.  The extent of the illegalities (both NCAA and legal) was astounding.

Jalen & co seem like good guys, I wish them nothing but the best.  I enjoyed watching them here when they wore Maize & Blue, and I can appreciate how some of them want to come back.  However, it doesn't change the fact we (as an institution) set aside some of our core prinicipals for short term gains.

It may not be the most popular opinion, but I'm fine with non-relationship.  I hope (want) mich to stand for something besides just wins and losses.  I want that to be doing things the right way.  I'm probably too nieve to comment on this.

Here's a good article that

Here's a good article that gives an overview of what's going on (state legislature constraints, budget cuts, and AD as an independent entity).

However, what's striking to me is it seems the UF probably doesnt have well respected faculty in CS.  I say this because at our beloved UM, EECS (and other engineering faculty) are regularly only supported between 0.1 - 0.2 by the university.  The rest of their salary is research grants.  Engineering depts in general operate that way as government & industry alike regularly rely on academia to solve some of the tougher problems -- so there is plenty of $$$ to go around in those fields.  Clearly, the UF faculty stuggled to ataian such funding.  I wonder why....

Good points, but I'd like to

Good points, but I'd like to give you a few more items to think about:

1.  I think one can argue that there is already is a division between the haves and have nots.  TCU and Boise are the exception and not the rule.  Look at the final BCS standings and they are the only non-BCS representatives in the top 25.  Its no coincidence that KU and UK played for the bball NC.  Both those schools spend (and choose to do so) siginificant money and resources that other schools do.

2.  I think its also well estabilshed that neither Bosie or TCU attracted top talent, but instead developed from a pull of USC / Texas castaways.  I'd argue that in my system they (and therefore indirectly the school) they would benefit more as their earning power might not be as great in the future (lack of NFL opprotunities, etc.).

3.  I'd never really thought of your idea of further seperation of the FBS, but got to admit I kind of like it.  NFL uses 16 games + playoff to determine a champion of 32 teams.  We use 13 games + 1 bowl to determine a champion of 110+ teams.  Someone is invevitably going to be left off the table.

Let them earn $$$

To me, the answer is simple: remove all constraints on a kid earning money, but don't require a minimum salary across the NCAAs.  What do I really care if Kentucky wants to pay $10,000 for a point guard or Alabama $50,000 for a tail back?

To me this does several hings:

1.  Removes the facad of college sports of not being a business.

2.  Allows a kid to cash in on endorsements etc. when in maybe one or two years he / she wouldn't.  Hell, in this case each school could employ an agent and require some percentage of earnings to that school's general fund.

3. It would allow the NCAA to actually focus on things like academic fraud, and put some substantial penalities in place  (like maybe losing accrediation -- don't laugh, what other than academic fraud goes directly at the heart of the worth and integrity of a degree???)

4.  When I was a student athlete, NCAA actually limited the amount of money one could make in a summer job.  Insane.

When I intended UM my friend was in EECS and spendt his summers with Microsoft earning tens of thousands of dollars.  UM actually used his story in some student recruiting literature.  Replace EECS with "basketball" and "Microsoft" with the Lakers and all of the sudden its a recruiting viloation.

For all those who say "they already get paid" -- yes, that may be technically true.  But many, do not get paid at the level a free market demands. I'd suggest just be happy with your own life before advacting forcing someone to accept less money.

My $0.02 (in order of

My $0.02 (in order of preference):

1.  Screener rolls hard to the block.  Burke hits screener over the top.  Howeva, many have pointed out because of size Burke has trouble delivering the pass over the top.

2.  Screener rolls hard to block and Burke rotates the ball quickly to the wing.  Screener should be anticipating entry pass from wing and establishing post from either trailing defender or help side defender.  Wing should have easy post entry to screener or open jump (depending on defense rotation).  Burke flairs to top of key to provide spacing and outlet in case none of this works out.

3.a.  If screener is good jump shooter, pick and pop.  Burke has to flair to the wing side to draw the double team away from screener.

3.b.  If a switch occurs (ie big defender on Burke), Burke should flair to the wing, current wing runs the baseline to clear out, and screener flairs top of the key and towards opposite wing.  This creates a clear out / mismatch where Burke (and excellent dribble drive penetrator) can go one on one against a big.

Never, ever, try to drible through a double team.  That is a disastor waiting to happen.

Sorry if this doesn't belong

Sorry if this doesn't belong in this thread, but Illinois has publically admitted they are going after UM commits.  I had 2 reactions:

1.  LMAO

2.  Slimey.  Esp to bring it to media.  I actually wonder if this isn't a NCAA violation, as you can't talk about specific recruits untill LOI is in hand.

Again, sorry if not right forum.  Neg bomb away if you feel it isn't.

It would not surprise me if

It would not surprise me if Notre Dame is pulling the strings behind this.  The ND agreement with the Big East (ND in Big East for everything except football) requires ND to schedule 4 Big East football games a year.  With Pitt and Syracuse bolting (not to mention Va Tech and Miami a few years ago) the options for ND scheduling in the Big East are suck and more suck.  However, they have a long standing rivalry with Navy.  Now ND can schedule Navy and have it count as one of its Big East games, freeing up another game for ND to do with as they please.

So, I actually think this pushes ND further away from a conference than closer.

In all seriousness, it was In all seriousness, it was great to see the sideline reactions to this. The coaches didn't beat the kid up, players trying to pick him up, and Hagerup himself getting pumped on the goal line stand. Stuff like that makes this team one of the most fun to follow in years
Exactly.

This SEC lovefest is making me sick.  Yes, they are a very good football conference, but the only way to truly know this is for them to play other conferences.  They don't.  The Big12 imo is the best conference this year, and I don't think the B1G and Pac12 are as bad as everyone thinks.

If this comes to fruition, I will boycott watching the BCS title game by doing something particularly anti-SEC -- like reading a book.

UM alum that grew up in Champaign

Yep, I'm a black sheep in the family :).  Anyway, parking near the stadium is not bad and the tailgate scene at Illinois is suprisingly good for their football tradition.  Lots of fields and empty lots around the stadium has lead to a robust party atmosphere.

CU is more segmented than AA.  There are three distinct areas (downtown Champaign, Campus Town, downtown Urbana).  Downtown Urbana has next to nothing going for it.  Don't waste your time there.

Campus town is nice, but parking is attrocious there.  They conciously made the decisiion a few years back to discourage cars in the campus town area.  Walk there or take the bus (CU bus system is actually really good).  Kam's and CO Daniels are now Illinois instutions, but mostly frat folks.  Legends is a great place to go (on green street) for food and see some early games.  It will have more of an older crowd there too.  Paps Del's Pizza just down the road is can't miss.  Nothing like it outside of Chicago.  I can't emphasize enought going there.  If wings are more your thing, hit Murphy's Pub.

Downtown Champaign is a lot of fun.  As I got older, this where my friends and I would spend most of our time.  It has more of a grad student / hippster vibs and will make Ann Arborites feel more at home.  Esquire is a chill pub.  There's a martini bar called Boltini that's pretty good and Jupiter for pool.  Hell, there's even a Blind Pig.

If your looking more coffee shop, Cafe Kopi is the best.  There are even a couple of Cafe Espresso's sprinkled through town.

For breakfast, everyone will tell you Mary Ann's diner.  On game day, it will be packed.  I'd avoid it.  I personally think its overrated.

Have fun, and yeah, they tend to think of Mich as their top rival....  Its funny

I agree 100%. Brain's is I agree 100%. Brain's is just providing the insightful game analysis I read this blog for in a very humorous tone. Playing devil's advocate on his point about bad rps for this game, it seems to me that we tipped our hand waaaaaay too early on blitzs, and it is there for a no brainer to go left against 2 instead of right against 9. It would have been interesting to see how some of this worked out if we don't tip our hand so much. Edit: sorry. Somehow over looked Brian's spot on tipping our hand. Anyone got a feel if these blitzes work better if we don't tip our hand?
I think its a little

I think its a little disingenious to ding Carr for being inflexible when RichRod went 100% spread 100% of the time no matter who was out there.  RichRod even said something like (I am paraphrasing) "I can only coach what I know..."

Regardless, its great to see the coaches making adjustments based on player personell and game conditions.  This def is not going to be able to line up one on one with teams and be successful.  But the scheming, adjustments (see blitz packages in second half) seem to me to be a lot better.

Oh yeah, +1000 for more band.  -1000 for athletic dept on water.

I agree it was weird, but not

I agree it was weird, but not for the external perception.  It was just weird to hear a coach essentially emontionally begging to keep his job at the end of season banquet.  I would have really much rather he spendt time talking about seniors, and how this years' season and bowl qualification is stepping us in the right direction.  I guess the whole tone was just odd to me.  But I guess with all the pressure he's been under, I can't get too upset over this....

Interesting that his tone seemed to imply he has no idea what Brandon is going to do or thinks he is gone.  Or am I reading too much into nothing?

Good points by both of

Good points by both of you.

Hate was defn too strong a word by me, so I should (I do) retract that.  The only point I was trying to make was that I tend to notice a strong anti-Carr theme in this blog.  Maybe I haven't been around here long enough to be able to make such an crticism, but hey, I've got to start somehwere.

Just to be clear, I am not advocating maize and blue kool-aid drinking, all coaches at times have done things to make me scratch my head -- and people should feel free to call a spade a spade as the saying goes.....

I've been reading this blog

I've been reading this blog for a long time and generally enjoy Brian's take on all things M and his wit and humor.  Having said that, this seething hatred for Lloyd Carr has got to stop.  So recruiting slipped a bit under him in his last year or so.....  It's done and over with.  Roster implosion posts have been well documented.

From the unfounded accusations on michigan illuminati to this summer's incident with Morgan Trent, this blog never gives Lloyd Carr (a man who served the university with distinction for over 20 years) any benefit of the doubt .  Worse,  Brian and others seem to take out current frustations on Carr.   These are the only reasons for this post now (other than the bye week).

I wish nothing but success for Carr and Rich Rod --- why?  They coach my alma mater and beloved wolverines.  Assuming there are factions in the wolverine family (pro-RR and anti-RR), it serves no purpose for people to constantly through the past under the bus.
