I've done both football and hockey games by myself and once you're at the game, it doesn't even matter, you'll be surrounded by M fans happy to high five a stranger when the moment comes. And there's always the Charity Tailgate on E. Hoover for before the game if you don't feel like trying to latch on to someone else's setup.

I moved to Athens in 2004,…

I moved to Athens in 2004, and the townie scene was already very nostaligic for that mid-90s period that you lived there. And that's really cool about Kindercore, was your brother in Kincaid? I've actually been contemplating a career change here as of late and was looking to see if there were any indie record labels in Ann Arbor that I might be able to intern at but came up empty. Just another sign of the differences in the music scenes between the two towns, I guess.

Having moved from Athens to…

Having moved from Athens to Ann Arbor earlier this year, I definitely miss the music scene the most. Lot of great bands/artists that didn't get mentioned here have Athens roots like Danger Mouse, Widespread Panic, Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, Pylon, Harvey Milk, and Azure Ray. And then there are bands that spent a good amount of time in Athens even if they didn't form there like Neutral Milk Hotel and the Flat Duo Jets. Prior to COVID, there were great shows nearly every night. I also miss the music in the stadium, there's nothing quite like seeing a grandma dancing in the stands to the latest trap hit. Basically everything else, though, I lean towards Ann Arbor.

You mean you weren't betting…

You mean you weren't betting Week 0 games?

But yeah, I know there's a long way to go. I mainly do it for fun, I deposited an amount at the beginning of the season and I'll play with that until I lose it all or the end of the season.

Last week was a little rough…

Last week was a little rough, though still up about 40% for the season thus far. This week I took:

Under 62.5 in Louisville vs. FSU

Over 47 in A&M vs. Arkansas

Over 57.5 in Arizona vs. Oregon

Ohio State -31 in the first half vs. Akron

Michigan -19.5 vs. Rutgers

Buffalo -13.5 vs. Old Dominion

I ended up with:

I ended up with:

Duke +3 vs. Northwestern

Stanford -11.5 vs. Vandy

Toledo -13.5 vs. Colorado State

Cincy -3 vs. Indiana

Over 53.5 in Michigan vs. NIU

Over 58 in Notre Dame vs. Purdue

Alabama -14.5 vs. Florida

As someone who recently…

As someone who recently moved after spending 15+ years in Athens, GA, this is the first pick from that town that he's gotten that isn't just laughably wrong. Tlaloc is at least in the conversation for best Mexican in town, even if it's not a great town for that cuisine in general.

UGA but mainly so I'll have…

UGA but mainly so I'll have an excuse to visit Athens again. After living here for the last 16.5 years, I'm leaving next week and am getting wistful. But in all honesty, the football culture down here is one to be experienced. Being around so many other people who were passionate about college football actually elevated my own love of the game, even if we rooted for different teams.

As a Guamanian myself, I…

As a Guamanian myself, I just wanted to point out that nobody there says, "in Guam," but rather, "on Guam." Reading it the other way was just as jarring as seeing my island mentioned on MGoBlog. I'll hang up and listen.

Does anyone know if the…

Does anyone know if the charity tailgate is happening tomorrow? We've been enjoying going but the site still says TBA for tomorrow.  Thanks.

Just hurry up and make 11s already. Mo's been wearing them all year, but they'd be so much better in a maize and blue colorway.

I'm in the same boat at 6'5",

I'm in the same boat at 6'5", regular Nike sizes just seem to fit short. And it's not like Nike doesn't make tall sizes, I have a bunch of DriFIT shirts that I bought to work out in and they're all tall sized. Maybe there aren't enough of us giant team specific apparel purchasers to warrant tall merchandise.

If I recall correctly,

If I recall correctly, Alabama was recruiting him as an H-back, which makes his possible switch to offense now that much more intriguing.

Why would the Gator Bowl pass

Why would the Gator Bowl pass on Michigan? Who is the fourth pick from the Big Ten that is a better pick for a bowl than Michigan that would allow the Wolverines to slide to 5th pick BWW? Nebraska because they travel? Blah.

Tickets?

Came up from Georgia for the game; this is my first @NW experience. Ticket prices on Stubhub seem pretty high, perhaps a remnant of when this matchup had some preseason hype, so I'm gonna take my chances and try to get tickets day of. Does anyone have advice in terms of whether I'd be better served scoping out the areas closer to the stadium, or do you think I'd have any luck in Evanston proper. Thanks.

Yeah, Mettenberger should be

Yeah, Mettenberger should be decent if not good. I saw him at Georgia's spring game before he was booted when both he and Aaron Murray were freshman and he looked to be the better of the two. Caveats apply about development, it just being one game and a glorified scrimmage at that, and that I am and have always been just a fan, but the guy looked like a gamer. Big arm, too, if I'm remembering correctly. I walked out of Sanford Stadium saying he would start over Murray, then he promptly got booted off the team.

From listening to the talk radio here in Athens, the impression I get is that Georgia does well in state but always manages to let some of the best talent slip away. You should hear the yearning for Eric Berry and Cam Newton and the whatifs. Last year they managed to lock down the state for the most part and had their best class in years. I don't think it's going as well this year.

Yeah, it's been that way

Yeah, it's been that way since at least the spring game, when I picked up an authentic #5 jersey for half off. Of course, I knew they were in the clearance aisle because of little man Tate but I was happy to pick up my Courtney Avery jersey so cheaply.

DT recruiting

I spend large amounts of time convincing myself that there isn't a mentality amongst the coaches that their extensive DL background will allow them to mold something greater than the talent on hand would suggest - maybe something akin to NFL coaches looking only at measurables and convincing themselves they can coach up a player who has [insert problem here]

I live in SEC country too and agree that Mullen is doing a beast of a job. But you gotta know you're going to lose him to somebody. Enjoy him while he lasts.

I may have gone overboard on

I may have gone overboard on the perfection stuff and it was not my intention to turn this into a referendum on what qualifies a player to wear the #1 jersey. I was just shocked that you would say a player can never hope/petition for the jersey simply because he underperformed early in his career. You must really hate what Braylon did for/to the number because if you had it your way, he would have never gotten it. I guess when it comes to these players, I'm more glass half full. He has one more season to prove he should wear the number [and still have a season left to actually wear it] and I hope he uses that to motivate him to be the best. He already holds the single game yardage record, it should be making us giddy to know he can still get so much better. If he puts the work in and sets the world on fire next season, I'd hate to have to tell him he can't have it because of some missed plays during his sophomore year.

Speaking from a place of perfection?

Since I'm just a normal human being who makes errors, can you explain to me what it's like to never make a mistake? When you succeed, is it hollow because there was no other outcome? I've been reading this blog for almost 6 years now and almost never comment but just the chance to interact with someone so perfect was too good to pass up.

But really, you are advocating barring him from future accolades on the basis of one dropped pass? [Do you also encourage retroactively stripping Braylon of his #1, shopping out all pictures of him in that jersey] Even if he has had his trouble with the dropsies, dude is a redshirt sophomore and has made an equal, if not greater, number of great catches where he is plucking balls thrown at the ground or behind him.

Cheer the kids for their successes, don't rake them over the coals for their failures.

Yeah, I think I had a moment

Yeah, I think I had a moment of clarity while watching that video, only because I've been known to act much, much worse than he did. Even my wife got more out of hand than that during the game this past weekend. Apparently we should never go in public and I lucked out in finding another psychotic person to share my fandom with.

I live in Athens and you

I live in Athens and you might want to check if U-Verse is in your area. It just came to my neighborhood a couple weeks ago, but as the only non-DirectTV BTN carrier in the area, I jumped on it quick. Though the last couple of years I've been going to a "sports bar." I dropped so much money drowning my sorrows that they got to the point where they'd put the Michigan game on the main TV and over the speakers as well. Nothing like taking over in SEC country.

Re: #4

My father in law has routinely said to me that he wouldn't care if the team went 1-11 if their lone victory was Ohio State. I don't get it. In fact it makes me a little bit angry when he says it. But given their fact checking regarding Lloyd Carr, I wouldn't be surprised if the one Michigan fan they know also happens to be a part of this lunatic fringe. Ace reporting at its best.

Not arguing, just tossing in my two cents.

To me, he seems to be gambling on the rookie salary cap happening. Otherwise, I don't think there's any reason that he would go. For instance, in the 2009 Draft, Cleveland picked Mohamed Massaquoi, a WR I was very familiar with down here in Athens, with the 50th pick and signed him to a 4 year 3.636 million contract, with $1.863 million guaranteed. I didn't find a number on his signing bonus but other picks in his neighborhood of the draft got around $1.2-$1.5 million. That was a mid-second round pick. In that same area of the third round, with pick 83, you had New England Brandon Tate and sign him to a 4 year, $2.505 contract, with a $755,000 signing bonus. I couldn't find the guaranteed end of that deal but you could fairly guesstimate it was about half the value of his deal, or around $1.25 million. So just by falling from the third to the second round, you've cost yourself $1 million. If you slip even further, it just keeps getting uglier.

But a year later with a sliding scale, rookie cap in place, the kind of signing bonuses being handed out to third round picks in the current market could look huge. If you know that you're not ever going to be one of the top, top players you might as well get in there while people are overpaying for your commodity. And who knows what would happen if an NFL lockout take an entire season and there is a whole new crop of college players looking to turn pro, thus resulting in a talent cluster[redacted] of a draft that could see you slide even further.

Would I give up $1 million dollars to anchor the D during my senior year at Michigan? That, and so much more. But for a kid with no ties to the University prior to his showing up to play for the team, I can't fault him for trying to maximize the business end of his playing. I'll always be thankful for him cushioning the blow of RoJo and for the seasons he played [because imagine what it would have looked like without him].

I live in Athens, GA and my wife is a Georgia fan. I go to every game I can that doesn't interfere with me getting to watch the boys in Maize and Blue. And I've never, ever been told to sit down. Even the old ladies get up and get loud in Sanford.

I'm not trying to be an

I'm not trying to be an a$$hole either but if you check your history books you'll see that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was only a part of a larger Japanese offensive in the Pacific, including attacks against other American territories like the Fillipines and my home, Guam. Those attacks, because they happened across the dateline, happened on December 8th. So either day can truly be used to remember those lives lost in the Japanese offensive. Just sayin'.

I agree. Nevada's pass

I agree. Nevada's pass defense was ripe for the picking. While one could say the same thing about ours based on depth , assuming Cissoko is going to be good to go I believe we will fare better than the good-feelings-highlight-airshow-golden-boy thing Notre Dame accomplished through the air today.

I don't think they sell the

I don't think they sell the kind of KoolAid you're drinking where I live.

To call a 3 win improvement when the burden of the offense is likely to fall on the shoulders of one or two kids straight out of high school and our defensive depth chart looks grim the worst case scenario is ludicrous. Sure, we'd have to suffer through another likely loss to Ohio St. and an invitation to the Afterthought Bowl, but it would mean marked improvement and rabid enthusiasm for what would look to be a strong season in 2010.

The worst case scenario would be too many people thinking the worst case scenario is 6-6 and that leading to RichRod's dismissal. Even if you don't like his methods or his public persona, if we scrapped the process now we'd be an afterthought to the high school recruits who make the upper echelon programs what they are. 6-6 this years means his system is working and we should give it time.
