To be fair, the conference champion is meant to be a tie-breaker between similar-looking teams.
So when evaluating Michigan compared to Penn State (should they win Saturday), they have won the Big Ten East + Big Ten Championship, Michigan edges them out in SoS but not by a ton, Michigan won by 40 in the head-to-head, and Michigan went 5-2 against the same opponents that Penn State went 6-1 against. Of particular concern is our loss to Iowa whereas they blew Iowa out.

It's pretty clear that Michigan and Ohio State are the two best teams in the Big Ten. If they take two teams from the Big Ten, there's no reason it shouldn't be Michigan and Ohio State.

One thing that the article glosses over is that the programs most likely to generate revenue are the most successful programs. The most successful programs are generally led by good coaches. A well-coached team will likely commit fewer penalties.
This is briefly touched upon at this point:
And I found Brymer's simple dismissal of a valid (IMO) concern leaving me slightly unsatisfied.
I would add that generally speaking we should probably be on the receiving end of this bias as a "protected flagship" program, but we only recently re-attained that status after our 8 year wander through CFB wilderness.

While OSU is somewhat odd I absolutely understand someone wanting to get out of their hometown to go to school.

What a frustrating few days for Michigan athletics.

Honestly, mostly positive. There's only one Buckeye I regularly interact with and he maintains that Michigan is a top 4 team in the country (saying the performance in Columbus proves it). I went down to the game Sat. and for the most part, everyone was incredibly nice. Almost too nice to where it was eerie. Had a student body check one of us in our group, flip us off, and give us a nice "Fuck Michigan" and had a few people shout "Booo!" as we walked by, but other than that it was a nice trip overall.

When doing autobids I think we'd need a "must be in top 15" (or similar) of the CFP rankings to avoid a situation like 2012 where 8-5 Wisconsin was the Big Ten champion.

So, if we're No. 5 (or No. 4, remember the committee ranked 1-loss TAMU above undefeated Washington) then what is our shot realistically? Could OSU and Michigan both be in the playoffs, leaving two conference champs out?
|3 days 11 hours ago||My biggest frustration has||
My biggest frustration has been in our two losses, obviously.
We lead in the 4th quarter. Get a fucking first down! I expected the offensive line to be dominant this year but they were really only average and folded pretty spectacularly against competition with a pulse. Their pass protection was generally very good though, but it seems like when it came down to crunch time we just couldn't get our RBs going for first downs to run out clock in the 4th.
Chesson seemed to disappear at times.

Well this will be the ultimate test to see just how valuable conference championships are to the committee. If Colorado beats Washington, we will have wins over the Pac 12 champion and the Big Ten champion.

The playoff isn't out of the question. It's kind of ironic, but I don't think anyone would dispute the fact that Michigan and Ohio State are the two best teams in the Big Ten (despite neither being in the title game). I could see the CFP committee dropping us to 4 this week. A Colorado win over Washington next week would be huge, and we own the head-to-head with whoever is going to win the Big Ten. There is a nonzero, but still fairly small, chance we make it in.
Our loss to Iowa on the road at night was by 1 as time expired and we played Ohio State to essentially a draw.
