with just a game manager in Alex Smith. 12-0 if memory serves.
That's some good game management.
|1 week 4 days ago||I remember watching the '89 opener vs. Notre Dame.||
We were ranked No. 2, ND ranked No. 1. Freshman Elvis comes on for injured starter Michael Taylor and looked like a seasoned vet, bringing UM back from the dead with his accurate passing and calm leadership. ND's offense did nothing all day except convert one turnover deep in our end. Their QB Tony Rice completed one pass all day. But... sonofabitch... yeah, that happened. Twice. ARRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH.
Still hurts, man. Still hurts.

That is so Harbaugh.

Welcome to Michigan. Which Romney son are you again?
|1 week 4 days ago||Well that obviously depends||
on whether we are adjusting for inflation. Ages 18-22 are pretty far in my rearview mirror, so... maybe? Those were the days. Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.

but I'm very surprised U of Toronto is so much higher than McGill.
Sacre bleu! What say you, MGoCanadians, eh?

I see what you did there. Just more of him to love, man.

Man, that kid has a sweet throwing motion for, what, a 16-year old?
Would find his enrollment at The University of Michigan pleasant. File under "want."
|3 weeks 17 hours ago||You know, I was looking for a gif||
along the lines of "so it's come to this." But for some reason, Google found this instead, and I realized "Oh crap, I've been doing this wrong."

HIV and other "lentiviruses" have been the object of investigation for gene therapy since before I started my grad work in '97 (I worked with retroviral vectors but not HIV). They're good vectors for introducing therapeutic genes because they can integrate into the host genome without needing to drive the target cell into division, which is the trick with other retroviruses.
But clinical trials with viral vectors are fraught with peril... it can be very hard to predict how people's immune systems will react to the vector. The famous/infamous case of Jesse Gelsinger at Penn basically shut down viral vector clinical research in the US for years at about the same time I was working on it (the virus in that case was an adenovirus and not a retrovirus, but the NIH shut down all viral gene therapy clinical trials in the US). Retroviruses, in particular, because they insert into the DNA, can now and then insert into and inactivate an important gene (like a tumor suppressor), have some real risk associated with them. But viral engineering has advanced a good deal since then, and it's great to see all that basic research helping real patients with little hope otherwise.

At least not nearly the way that I understand what happened to the legendary "Decimated Defense" of 2009 and 2010 fame. At least then, it was fairly easy to look at who was manning what positions, look at the "Never Forget" flag (which ran out of real estate), take a glance over at GERG's gopher or whatever that was (what did we decide that was?), and it made perfect sense.
But last year's O didn't make sense to me outside of "Devin Gardner is a warrior but clearly has PTSD" and "O-line is kinda young-ish."
All the facts and circumstances of personnel, game plan, etc. still didn't add up to what was out on the field. Especially since, you know, we always had a great week of practice.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||You know what would be a reality show I'd actually watch?||
"Troll Hunter". On the Discovery Channel. The most vile, bigoted, threatening, awful trolls get tracked down and outed and shamed on TV. This would be close to must-see TV for me.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||question from a layperson||
totally (and deliberately) ignorant of Greek life during UM days: what does lack of recognition by the University mean on the practical level other than not participating in official "Greek Life" events? Do students still live in the house? Can they throw parties or other social events anyway? Or do they essentially have to close up shop?
|4 weeks 1 day ago||That show used to completely freak me out as a kid.||
Even the opening credits/music would do the trick.
Found it. So spooky.

after pass interference after pass interference. The refs completely dominated that game. And yet we were still in a position to PITCH THE BALL TO BREASTON YAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!
|4 weeks 2 days ago||How about non-calls?||
The 1990 pass-interference non-call on MSU's Eddie Brown, who tackled Desmond Howard in the endzone after Des had him beat on a slant for the winning 2-pt conversion. Michigan went into the game ranked #1.
Story for you young'uns:

And every time I re-watched it, I didn't get less nervous. Phew, he's OK... phew, he's OK again... phew, no injury that time either...
|4 weeks 3 days ago||The problem is that if it's THAT serious||
then there was a victim. And innocent people being victimized, especially if it's a physical assault of some kind, is never ok for entertainment.
If it was Dez doing something that would land him in a Keyboard Cat video, that's different. If it's him getting thrown hilariously off a treadmill or something like that, hilarity ensues.

also find a place on the list for Bielfeldt's back-to-back offensive boards, which were big at the time even though he didn't hit his foul shot after the second.
The inbounds set-piece with Zak and Spike.

|5 weeks 2 days ago||You could easily turn this into a sports column||
by having Nick Saban write a column bemoaning how much he has to have the bagman spend on the 5-star talent from the south. There were these kids in his signing class that were only low 4-stars! Oh, the horror, the horror. But if he goes up to the rust belt, 5-stars cost about half as much.
And you'd be forgiven for saying "STFU, Nick Saban," but Jenny Wang's rebuttal would say it in a nice way.
