Coaches' timeouts are worse. Basketball teams should get one, full stop.

Playcalling seemed okay, certainly not great, but at least decent by Borges standards. But blocking still horrible, Gardner is a mess, WRs dropped a number of big passes. It's just a clownshow. So it doesn't really matter to me whether it's the playcalling or not. Either way the offense is a disaster and Borges simply needs to go.
|16 weeks 4 days ago||What if||
What if Gallon missed some practice, or Gardner, or Lewan, or Ryan, or Clark? Do you think they wouldn't play? Seems like Hoke would have phrased things differently if he simply wanted to say Fitz couldn't play because of injury.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||My question too||
esp since Brian's a big DFW fan.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Hypothetical||
Hypothetical: Say you're a fan of this team and you pay a lot of money each year to see them play. This team has shown for 1.5 years absolute ineptitude at running the football. Now say you're in a tight game and get a critical turnover deep in the opponent's territory. You've had some success passing the ball and you're averaging about 1 ypc on rush attempts over the last game and a half. Well, naturally your offensive coordinator dials up two straight runs to set up 3rd and nine. You go on to kick a field goal and end up losing by 4.
Now say this is essentially a pattern for three years. Does the fan have any legitimate gripe or should s/he just be happy that they could experience such an event because in someways it was legitimately mind blowing?
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Great||
Irrelevant. My post was not on how best to contact DB, it was on whether fans should feel any justification in being upset in the program or whether they should always just always feel blessed. You're right though, I'm sure DB would take my call.

In that case. Give Borges a raise and increase ticket prices! This is Michigan fergodsakes. Can't wait for App State next year. #wow
|17 weeks 4 days ago||I hate arguments||
I hate arguments that suggest fans don't deserve anything -- that they should just be happy and feel blessed to attend a game in the big house. In reality, people pay serious money to attend these games. I'm not defending booing the team, I wouldn't personally boo unless there were a way to isolate my boos directly for Borges' ears, but nevertheless, this is a business. Fans pay for a product. If no changes are made to the coaching staff, plus the worst home slate in history and increasing prices, I think fans have rights to complaints. It doesn't make them entitled assholes, it makes them people who wonder whether a plane ticket and a $100 ticket is worth watching nonsense. At least we have a new digital billboard outside the stadium.

Thread should stay. There's no defending Borges anymore.

Nice write up.
|17 weeks 5 days ago||Problem is||
Problem is, we've had five debacles. Not one. We are by no means a good team who just got beat last week by someone who has our number.

|17 weeks 6 days ago||JB||
JB said he would shut down McGary until B10 play if it came to that. Seems like nobody really knows (including McGary himself and the coaches), so at this point I'm just hoping he's ready to go for conference play. I can handle dropping a game or two to Iowa St or Duke, as unpleasant as that sounds.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Completely||
Completely disagree about McGary vs. Robinson. People are saying Burke created all of McGary's baskets but if anything he created more shots for Robinson. Robinson's shots have either been assisted threes or assisted dunks. He is an incredible athlete with a solid, hopefully improving, shot but to date, hasn't shown any ability to beat his man off the dribble. I'd say Nik and Levert are both more capable. People just think he looks the part (not to mention he has the right last name) with his body type and freakish hops.
If you want to question whether McGary can continue playing at a level as he did in the tourney, fine. But his level of play in the tourney was outstanding. Not only does he make all the hustle plays, he can lead a fastbreak, he was developing a midrange jumper, and could beat a man from the free throw line. He's very athletic and has great body control. There's a good reason why he's preseason all american. If he's healthy this year, he's the reason I think our team is a little underrated at the moment.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||You're not||
You're not telling me anything I don't know. My point is there are a lot of potential contributors there and it's not unreasonable to get production out of RS sophs. Bottom line this is a historically bad OL and last year's was poor at best. If you want to chalk that up simply to youth fine but it's not like we're lacking in supposed talent, so I think it goes beyond that.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||I don't think||
I don't think you do. Maybe not call zone read on 3rd and 2 in red zone. But real question is, can this performance really be blamed on simply youth when we have a great pair of tackles, a seemingly decent glasgow, a 5 star RS frosh and then bryant, bars, bosch, magnuson, miller? Forget about the rushing game, we were playing 6 OL at times with fitz in pass pro and they were getting to DG. Something is seriously seriously wrong.
|19 weeks 1 day ago||Thank You||
It's all about execution. Just call the plays you want to be able to run and expect your players to execute perfectly because this is Michigan. Football is a game of establishing your will, so it doesn't matter what the defense is doing. We aren't going to rely on gimmicks. We're going to execute our game plan.
Al Borges and Brady Hoke
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Correction||
Weellll, that goes without saying.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Yes||
Yes, I'm "freaking out" over one game by expressing anything short of unbridled enthusiasm and blind praise for the coaching staff. Thanks for your straw man argument and insightful addition to this conversation.
While we only lost one, which was lost by the coaches, we also essentially won on a coin flip outcome to one of the worst teams in FBS, had a dogfight with another one, and were thoroughly unprepared for IU's spread.
Meanwhile, we are on something like offense iteration #29 and our fourth LG. What did we do all fall?
|19 weeks 4 days ago||And||
And I'm concerned he's playing a significant role in it.
|19 weeks 4 days ago||I agree||
I agree that there are way too many people overreacting to single game outcomes and panicking and those people do bring down the overall quality of discussion, but I do think there are some legitimate concerns with consistency. And I don't think that it can be entirely attributed to youth.
|19 weeks 4 days ago||Do you||
Do you have any reservations about Hoke? Do you think it's possible to be excited about some aspects of our program (primarily recruiting) and worry about other things (refusal to modernize our punting, late game clock management, offensive identity/philosophy)?
|19 weeks 4 days ago||Doesn't explain||
Doesn't explain inexplicable game plans that result in losses to significantly inferior opponents (Iowa 2011, PSU 2013) and nearly losing to Akron. Doesn't explain repeatedly trying to institute offensive schemes that our personnel can't run before reverting, out of desperation, to schemes we are quite effective at.
We don't have the talent and experience to be a top 5 program, but we should be a 7-0 team.
|19 weeks 6 days ago||They||
They are expecting CB blitz and call a run directed at hiim with Lewan picking him up. They just were wrong about the blitz. It makes absolutely no sense that they are optioning off the CB and sending a run blocker out there for him who then doesn't block him when he doesn't blitz.
|20 weeks 3 days ago||We||
We don't appreciate your sarcasm. Shouldn't you be putting... at night... with the 15 year old daughter of the dean?
|20 weeks 4 days ago||Lol||
Come on man. You're telling me the playcalling was the same? Just look at the first two drives, including the first three and out. FWIW I don't necessarily blame Borges for PSU gameplan, I still think Hoke may force his hands at time.
|21 weeks 1 day ago||It's||
It's easier for people to just blame Borges rather than consider that our issues might be a bit more systemic and further reaching. There was a time when Schafer was the reason for our terrible defense and not something deeper...
|21 weeks 3 days ago||Or||
Or that he can never give a straight answer in a presser. But you tell me, you think we came out with same game plan in the second half? You think we thought things were going pretty well? Let's just keep trying the same thing?
|21 weeks 3 days ago||I don't||
I don't know how Hoke can claim they had the same gameplan going into the second half as the first. They clearly did not on either side of the ball. Started bringing more pressure on defense. Started passing on first and/or second downs. Went to more zone read. Stopped most of the unbalanced line stuff. More than anything, it was the game plan going into this game, which I mostly blame Hoke for, that cost us this game. We pretty much dominated the second half when we resorted back to things that we are actually good at rather than the things we wish were good at.
|21 weeks 3 days ago||Offense||
Offense depends on how long we try to establish the things that we are worst at before resorting to doing the things we're best at. Seems like Hoke and Borges like to try at least a half of the former before moving on to the latter.
