They refuse to accept that the 1966 World Cup was a huge fluke (aided by a generous dose of home cooking) and that otherwise they've been mediocre throughout history - maybe on par with Mexico.

Well, you were very close on the scores of the games - just got the teams backwards.

Whoa. Comparing Michigan football to England soccer . . . that's hitting below the belt.
This picture offers a better comparison:

Hmmm - good question. I'm not sure but it may have to do with whether a vowel is at the end of the father's name. I notice that there's a Bjarnason and Skulason on the team, with only one "s".

Fun Icelandic fact: their last names change with each generation. It's all based on who your father is.
So if Magnus Bjornsson has a son named Johan, the son's name is Johan Magnusson. And his son would be [first name] Johansson. (It's the same for girls, but they have "sdottir" at the end - Bjornsdottir, Magnusdottir, Johansdottir.)

The tribal vote was what the NCAA wanted. It interpreted the lack of a vote as an abstention.

Neither tribe was opposed to the name; one just abstained from taking an official position while the other officially supported it.

Obviously they're good. But the announcers went overboard with the #1 ranking stuff, failing to explain how arbitrary these rankings are. Argentina doesn't currently hold any title, world or confederation-wise.

Amateur. Not amatuer.
(I wasn't going to say anything, but five misspellings of the same word in one post is probably an MGoBlog record.)

The current world champions are Germany. A country certainly known for its short, poor population, huh?

I'm a little tired of hearing them go on about Argentina being the #1 team in the world. Yes, according to the weird FIFA rankings, they are. (They had Belgium #1 in the world a few months ago.) They didn't win the last World Cup, or the real Copa America last year. They're very good but exactly how good is debatable. They certainly looked like world-beaters tonight, but we did a bit to help them out, too.
Wow - Lalas went off on the team. I don't blame him.

IIRC, soccer is the second-largest participation sport in this country. We don't produce great players because we generally don't believe in the European-style youth systems, but it's not that we lack for kids interested in the sport.

I'm pulling hard for Wales and Slovakia in this group. Get these two thuggish fanbases out ASAP.

I don't know about racism. Many of the biggest names in the soccer world are white (Messi, Ronaldo). Xenophobia, perhaps.

And you just know that in '94, they'd have been sent to Detroit for the group stages. Of course we'd be stuck with them.

It's not necessarily a bad song, but I don't think it works well for getting you fired up for a sports game. A lot of other countries have rousing anthems that are a call to arms (the French, Italian and Russian anthems really come to mind). And then you hear "God Save the Queen" and it's kind of a downer. It sounds like the kind of song you'd play at a military funeral.

It's a pretty blah song for sporting purposes. "Rule Britannia" would be better.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||There's something about||
There's something about soccer that triggers weird reactions in a lot of Americans and makes them feel threatened. I don't know if it's that they fear soccer will get too popular here (and thus cause American sports to decline), or if they just see it as too "international," like the metric system. It's an interesting social phenomenon.

If OSU were in Ypsi, I think their fans might actually be more normal. Having to actually interact with the "enemy" on a daily basis helps to keep things more civil. Compare them with Spartan fans (who might be obnoxious but generally don't go as far, behavior-wise).

Eh, Europe and Asia are for all practical purposes the same continent. The Ural mountains are a silly "border."
|2 weeks 5 days ago||England fans are a toxic||
England fans are a toxic mixture of ND (expectations too high, excuses for underachievement) and OSU (goons who want to fight everyone).
We were thankfully spared their antics in 1994 as they didn't qualify for the World Cup on our soil.

Why did you give the Central time for the kickoff? That might confuse some folks given that our community has to be heavily based in the Eastern time zone.

Professional rugby is a big deal overseas. Of course, it's also much harder to make a roster there than here.

I thought the NCAA had some clause in its rule book about proper moral conduct (something along those lines) of which PSU obviously was in violation.
