I don't know about McCaffery. He seems like a hothead who struggles to keep his own emotions in check, so how can he provide steady leadership for his players?

Seems iffy at best. Even if they get in, they are going to be a terrible seed now.
|5 hours 39 min ago||Yep. Tomorrow they probably||
Yep. Tomorrow they probably shoot 30% and lose by a score of like 67-42.
|5 hours 47 min ago||I will say in fairness that||
I will say in fairness that Northwestern has won this game more than Iowa has lost it. NW put together several clutch possessions in a row and has been making its FTs.

They really remind me of our Amaker teams, especially 2006 and 2007. We thought we were in for sure but kept choking down the stretch and suddenly we were on the outside looking in.

Devyn Marble's the one Iowa guy who hasn't folded up shop these last few weeks. I feel bad for him.
|6 hours 4 min ago||For a bad team, Northwestern||
For a bad team, Northwestern is pretty good at controlling the pace. Iowa is averaging like 83 ppg and you'd never know it.
|7 hours 28 min ago||No one is really talking||
No one is really talking about Iowa as a bubble team, but what if they lose tonight? They're currently 19-11 and 9-9 in league play - does that make them a lock?

I like to think it is beer. With the smirk on his face, he's thinking "Ha, no one knows what I poured in here!"- forgetting that he's drinking out of a clear cup.

There could be excellent schadenfreude potential on that board.

The Block M is a much better logo than the Block I. I'm glad our name starts with a cool letter.

Why can't Maryland be good in basketball? They've won a national title more recently than any B1G team and play in a new arena.
I wasn't thrilled with the recent expansion either, but what's done is done. All our complaining isn't going to do anything about it now.
This isn't all bad. These two do open up pretty fertile recruiting territory, and they give our East Coast fans chances to see us play (and non-East Coast fans an excuse to take little trips to NYC and DC). If these teams step it up, that helps the conference. If not, then our fans will just take the place over when we play there, and make it a quasi-home game, like when we play at Northwestern now.

Our defensive rebounding this year is virtually identical to last year: we're rebounding 72.4% of our opponents' misses to 72.2% last year.
We are worse on the offensive glass: this year we're rebounding 27.0% compared to 30.1% last year. So McGary's absence may be felt there.
Defense is where we really miss him, though. This year we're giving up 1.003 points per possession, whereas last year we gave up 0.953.
(I found all these numbers here.)

I forgot just how big Albrecht was over the course of the tournament. He made a lot of big threes and gave us steady ballhandling throughout. LeVert also came up big against Syracuse.
|1 day 12 hours ago||That may be but we are the||
That may be but we are the only team in the conference not to go on an extended slump. MSU has lost 5 of its last 8 (and 7 of 12). Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska, and Iowa all lost 5 of 6 at one point. The rest of the teams have had similar slides.
Meanwhile, the worst stretch we had was 2-3 in the middle of the season, and that was preceded by an 8-0 start and followed by a 5-0 finish.
|1 day 12 hours ago||Inexperience is a factor.||
Inexperience is a factor. That plays a role in our physical size - we're not particularly big/strong - and just general familiarity with our roles at that end. A lot of our defensive breakdowns come from missed rotations, which is usually due to someone forgetting to communicate or forgetting his responsibility. Veteran teams don't have as many of those lapses.
|1 day 12 hours ago||All teams emphasize defensive||
All teams emphasize defensive rebounds. They're an essential part of playing defense. We're OK in that area, ranking 91st nationally grabbing 72.6% of our opponents' misses. (91st doesn't sound that great but the rankings are really packed tight - if we were 2 percentage points better, we'd be in the top 25.)
Now, offensive rebounds are another story. Those we don't necessarily go for that much, other than our post player. We rank 246th in offensive rebound percentage at 30.1% (which is, nevertheless, better than the 27.4% our opponents get against us).

Rogers was a Prop 48 casualty and was ineligible as a freshman. Was that related to him picking MSU? I don't recall.
|1 day 13 hours ago||LeBron wasn't drafted as a||
LeBron wasn't drafted as a PG. He was always a 3 at Cleveland, albeit one who often ran the offense.
Also, if you're really focused on the guy being 6'6", keep in mind that at the time he played, MJ was really tall for a shooting guard. That's no longer true.
|1 day 13 hours ago||Moreover, that's a lot more||
Moreover, that's a lot more realistic than the "draft and follow" proposal outlined in the OP. Owners are not interested in drafting a guy only to wait for him to play a full college career.

Of course this raises the question: why have a conference tourney at all, if you're that concerned about a Cinderella winner? Is that little bit of ESPN exposure really worth it?
|1 day 16 hours ago||Maybe, despite the game, he||
Maybe, despite the game, he still enjoyed the bowl experience?
Bowls are weird - like a vacation and game mixed together. You do little tourist things and get free stuff. Even if you lose, it's probably a cool experience, especially when you're a freshman who's never been on any other trips.

The Ohio game suggests that he did recover mentally. That was one of the best performances I've ever seen by a Michigan quarterback.

Actually it is his choice. He bought the San Diego Clippers and moved them to Los Angeles. Later, he turned down the chance to move the franchise to Anaheim and instead decided to share the Staples Center with the Lakers.

I'd be really curious to read this piece, because there is pretty clear evidence that people of West African ancestry excel at sprinting and jumping (and in sports that make extensive use of these traits), not just in the United States but pretty much everywhere they live, including the Caribbean and Europe. Black players are massively overrepresented (compared to their share of the population) on the national soccer teams of France, England and the Netherlands, for instance, as well as on the national basketball team of Canada.

The "real" trophy is the one with the basketball on it. The one in the Illinois locker room was a temporary placeholder.

He may simply want to be an NBA player. He grew up in Canada, where there is no real college sports culture, so he isn't necessarily living a dream by being a Michigan player right now. It's also possible that he's tired of school and wants to focus on basketball. Not everyone wants to be a college athlete.
