My buddy, also a UM grad, did his best to slip in the phase "Michigan man" every chance possible, prompting Frieder to murmer, to no one in particular, "alot of chatter at this table", which, of course, was kerosene on the fire to us.

|16 weeks 6 days ago||Lets not forget who coined||
Lets not forget who coined this term. This is an MSMoo way of dealing with those who wear the maize and blue without "paying their dues"--not admitted to the university. There is an old joke: Q: What do UM and MSU students all have in common? A: They were all admitted to MSU. This is the crux of the problem: MSU is loaded with students who applied to UM and did not get in, and it just grates the hell out of them that mouth-breathing, knuckle-draggers (the MSMoo stereotype of a WalMart Wolverine) would associate themselves with a university while they could not get in and, therefore, THEY would never wear the maize and blue. This is just another manifestion of "green with envy", and every time I hear an MSMooer yak about WalMart Wolverines, it says more about their insecurities that it does about anyone who choose to cheer for Michigan without attending the university. My dad went to UM, I have two degrees from UM, my son is attending UM right now--do I care if Michigan fans actually attended the university? Hell no! The more more merrier....and someday, somewhere, without any warning, I'm sure I will run into an actual WalMart Spartan. They are just difficult to spot because Michigan fans don't give a damn whether an MSU "fan" attended the school or not. In fact, most Michigan fans don't give a damn about anything MSU does--it is a university in our rear view mirror. Sparty, on the other hand, just can't seem to get that "other school" out of their minds. Telling.

|2 years 6 weeks ago||There are some big names out||
There are some big names out there that keep getting mentioned that just are not going to come our way:
RICK NASH: He wants out of Columbus, where nothing is going to happen for a long time. Don't blame him--Columbus OH is no place to waste a career. However, he has a mammoth contract and is not an UFA--it will cost a king's ransom to make the deal, and it would probably be, in the long run, too expensive.
SHEA WEBER: He is the franchise in Nashville, and is only a RFA this year (UFA next year). I think Nashville will do anything to keep him--if he goes, what message does this send to your already shakey fan base? I think Weber stays put--this year and next.
SHANE DOAN: This guy has been with the Coyotes since the franchise moved to Phoenix, has a ranch there, and is apparantly happy where he is. I would be surprised if he doesn't finish his career in Phoenix.
Now for the blue-chip possibilities:
RYAN SUTER: The word is Nashville has made him a big offer, but he has not moved on it. My guess he wants to stick his toe in the free agency pond and test the waters, where Ken Holland will be waiting with Mr. I's checkbook. I think he is our best bet to sign.
ZACK PARISE: This deep playoff run of NJ does not help, but the financial instability of the Devils does. There have been longstanding stories about Suter and Parise wanting to play together, so this could be an interesting angle to pursue. The Rangers now have Marian Gaborik with an injury that requites surgery and may keep him out six months, so they are supposedly now in play for Parise's services. To make matters worse, Parise's dad, JP Parise--a former NHL player--has recently said that he thinks the Rangers would be a good fit for Zack. There is, of course, the very real possibility that Parise just resigns with the Devils. Would be the best offensive pick-up, but there is no clear path to signing him as of now.
ALEXANDER SEMIN: He and the Caps are parting company, so he will be available come July 1st. Prolific scorer when he wants to engage, but has a history of being the "lazy Russian" who does not always show up to every game ready to give 100%. Speculation is he could be paired with Datsyuk, who would "educate" him as to the expected Red Wings work ethic. If the Wings wanted to take a chance on him (and if Parise is not available), this could be a real option, and my guess is he is signable.

Detroit and Nashville are numerically equal--same number of points. If that tells you these teams are equally matched at this point in the season, I've got a bridge in NYC I can give you a great deal on. Nashville dramatically improved their position at the trade deadline, picking up Andrei Kostitsyn AND getting Alexander Radulov back from the KHL because he had a year left on this contract with Nashville when he defected to play in Russia.
The Wings? We got Kyle Quincey.
This was simply about giving the Red Wings the best possible chance to win in the first round of the playoffs. They do not now have that chance. Chicago came out of this with the best possible situation: Detroit picks up ONE point and locks up the fifth seed, AND the Blackhawks still get a win and get to play the Pacific division winner. If I were the Blackhawks I would be popping champaign in the locker room right now.

At the beginning of the season I predicted a 7-5 season, with us losing to ND but winning at Illinois. That outcome COULD be flipped, and we COULD end 7-5. Is it unacceptable? Unacceptable to who? Of course Hoke will say its unacceptable, but lets take a deep breath a remember this is basically RR's team--Hoke and Company came in in January and did what they could. Next season Hoke has his recruits coming in--how much can be expected from freshman playing the schedule we have next year is another question--but at least that will start to be Hoke's team.
Once we went 7-1, you could smell the winds of a cruel finish blowing in--losing the last four games just leaves a bad taste in your mouth, regardless of the competition level relative to the teams you beat to get to seven. It wasn't the media story of the post-MSMoo loss collapse, its that the schedule was loaded with "better" teams (and in this year of the Big Ten, just what the hell constitutes "better" is anyones guess). Denard is Denard, and I have said it before: he will never take you to the promised land. We can win games, some dramatic, some downright scary, but we will also lose games to good teams, and even lose games that we should have won. Shit happens. Give the Hoke regime some time and get the players that Hoke and Mattison and Uncle Fester want to play their system before we get out the pitch forks and torches.

I think that the "customer loyality" that many UM fans can be, for the purpose of this discussion, dissected into smaller subsets, with varying degrees of an actual connection with the University other than being a fan. Those who have graduated from UM, or have parents, siblings, children, etc. who have graduated from UM, will have a different kind of relation with the University, and thus the UM "product". These groups will be far more loyal for far longer, regardless. Were some fans in these groups dissatified with the RR era? Sure, but , by and large, they would never sever their ties with the University, wheras the baseball fan reference in the previous thread could change his loyality without sacrificing any deeper relation to the team other than just being a fan. I think the "hardcore" fans that would leave the program would be those who were, and were only, fans.

Zingy's Roadhouse does make terrific mac n' cheese, just very expensive for the portion they give you. Trying to make it at home? Be sure to use really high quality cheddar and follow the official receipe at http://www.zingermansroadhouse.com/2010/09/21/zingermans-roadhouse-on-food-network/
I still miss Del Rio. Belly up to the bar with a Del Burrito and some suds...those were the days.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||Bread Basket now has a||
Bread Basket now has a location on Carpenter Road, and has several locations in Detroit. For about nine bucks, you will get enough corned beef or pastrami to make about three Zingerman's sandwichs (and the CB/pastrami is really good). It's worth the drive if you are tired of the crowds and prices at Zingerman's. Don't get me wrong--I have been a long customer of Zingys, but as the prices go up the actual amount of meat on the sandwiches goes down to where it is almost laughable as to what you get for $15.
I just ate at Zingerman's Roadhouse a few days ago and had the terrific macaroni and cheese (which was voted best in the country by the Food Network). Had it for lunch, $9.50, and I swear there were about 15-20 penne pasta in the entire dish. I realize the ingredients are the best (and, thus, expensive), but any normal guy could inhale two orders easily, and would have just spent $19 on mac n'cheese (really good mac n' cheese, no doubt, but it is just mac n' cheese).
Maize n' Blue will fill you up for about $8-10, and is good. The ingredients are not the quality of Zingys, and the corned beef/pastrami is good, but certainly not great. But--there is ALOT of it, and it certainly is an enjoyable sandwich (the place looks like it was set up overnight, and you get the feeling that you could visit the next day and the entire building could be empty with not a trace of the business left).
|2 years 48 weeks ago||One more things (don't stop||
One more things (don't stop me..I'm on a roll) regarding the US News and World Report college rankings:
In 1996 Stanford President Gerhard Casper wrote James Fallows, then editor-in-chief of the magazine, to voice his objections to the methodologies employed in the ratings. The portion of his letter that is of interest to UM is as follows:
" I am extremely skeptical that the quality of a university - any more than the quality of a magazine - can be measured statistically. However, even if it can, the producers of the U.S. News rankings remain far from discovering the method. Let me offer as prima facie evidence two great public universities: the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and the University of California-Berkeley. These clearly are among the very best universities in America - one could make a strong argument for either in the top half-dozen. Yet, in the last three years, the U.S. News formula has assigned them ranks that lead many readers to infer that they are second rate: Michigan 21-24-24, and Berkeley 23-26-27. "

MSMoo at a distant #208...but they have a hell of a hospitality program.

I second the nostalgia for Del Rio. It was the hangout of choice way back in its day. I can't count how many burritos I ate at the bar and how much beer washed the aformentioned burritos down.
Re: Zingermans...this is, IMHO, a sad story. Twenty years ago this was a great place. I certainly understand that they strive to use the best ingredients to give you that "Zingermans" experience, but at some point you just look at the price point vs. the product and gasp. A sandwich is $15, and there is virtually nothing on it. For about the same price, a pastrami sandwich in NYC (with better pastrami) will give you at least 4x the meat as Zingys. Zingerman's has become THE AA food emporium, but I now feel more ripped off than satisfied when I leave. Sadly, I no longer visit there on my trips back to AA.

The UM and ND fanbases are two of the most loyal, and since the game is well within driving distance for the two schools, I think demand is only going to get worse. ND fans believe their program in back on track, and they will be travelling in packs to AA--and will need tickets. Combine all this with the new regime at Michigan and the first night game in Big House history, I would buy now. No doubt--there MAY be some bargins approaching gametime, but that could be very risky with a game like this--just too many fans who may try to buy walk-ups at gametime.

|3 years 26 weeks ago||These are actual numbers from||
These are actual numbers from UM admissions for 2009:
Approx. 800 (I think the number was 804) applicants from Michigan Community Colleges applied to UM for transfer status, junior year. Of those, 395 were admitted, with the range of average college GPA being 3.5-3.8 for those admitted. Your ACT/SAT scores play a lesser role in the decision when presenting 2-3 completed semester of college work. HS GPA is still a factor, but admissions are far more interested in seeing how you have done at the college level. This GPA must be calculated from classes that transfer to the UM school you are applying to--there are transfer guides available on the UM website. If you HS grades were so-so but your college GPA is much better, offer an explanation in one of the essays.
|3 years 26 weeks ago||In past years a deferral||
In past years a deferral typically meant you would hear in April that you had not been admitted(not all, but MOST deferrals were denied). This year, admissions has deferred far more than normal because of the 20% increase in applications, and because they do not want a repeat of last year where they "overadmitted". This year, a deferral holds out more hope that an acceptance is still possible.
|3 years 26 weeks ago||Last year UM had 3000||
Last year UM had 3000 transfer applications and accepted 1200. The number they accept depends on teh number of spots that are available to fill. My guess is that transfers will, also, have to wait a bit longer for their decisions.

The constant beating up of Dave Brandon remains a mystery to me. I have no doubt he talked to all the principals involved that have been metioned. He found out that JH had NFL fever, and had to look elsewhere. Les was, most likely, never a serious candidate, for a multitude of reasons. A number of other higher profile names were likely contacted, and DB was most likely told "Thanks, but no thanks." End of story. Open the checkbook? Sure, if that what it takes, but Hoke is not commanding THAT kind of money. There seems a faction of M followers out there are genuinely upset that DB did not find a candidate he could pay $4 mil/year. IF those big name/big money candidates were available and acceptable for the position, I have no doubt Brandon would have cut the check.

|3 years 27 weeks ago||The average GPA of an||
The average GPA of an incoming freshman to UM is 3.8, with an average ACT of 30. Trust me, the average GPA and ACT of a member of the football team is NOWHERE NEAR THAT! If it was, we would be up a creek with finding anyone who could actually play football and meet the academic standards. I am not saying there are not players on the roster who do not meet the regular UM admission standards, but those that do are typically the guys whose uniform is exactly as clean after the game as it was before the game, week after week. If you want to win, you HAVE to make provisions to get competitive players into the school.
|3 years 27 weeks ago||I don't think DB will be||
I don't think DB will be "cheap". If the right coach was available--AVAILABLE--at $5 mil/year, I think he would have paid it. A coach who would command that level of salary was apparently not available. You do not pay Brady Hoke a hugh salary just to show you are willing to do it. If Hoke gets things on track and starts beating MSMoo and that school from Ohio, I guarantee he will get a raise from DB.
|3 years 27 weeks ago||How do you know DB didn't||
How do you know DB didn't conduct a national coaching search? You ASSUME he didn't. Do you really believe that DB does not want the program to succeed? That he is more concerned about saving money than hiring the best available? You think if he offered JH, say, $6 mil/yr JH would be in Ann Arbor? How about $7 mil? $8 mil? Hell, at some point he has to throw those NFL desires out the window for $$$. Miles didn't come here because.....????...Dave Brandon blew it? Didn't offer Les enough money? It appears the other "big" names simply didn't want to leave where they are. Throw more money at them? I think hiring a head coach is not as easy as it may look sitting in front of a keyboard, pissing and whining because it didn't go the way you thought it should play out. DB is all in for Michigan. He knows what's at stake, and I think he may be a tad smarter than alot of the posters whining in this forum as to what could be done. Hell, lets start carping about how he failed to land Jon Gruden. I bet there are some real belly laughs deep in the bowels of the Michigan Athletic Department over the internet blab that surfaced around that name.

If I was a college coach I think I would just say "No, I never talked with Dave Brandon" rather than be put under that umbrella of suspicion.

I really don't think DB is trying to rip a page from the marketing manual of "The Blair Witch Project" in attacking the blogsphere with pro-Hoke posters, but he certainly is a few notches up the ladder from Bill Martin in creating his "Michigan brand".
