I never understood the "we have helmets now so its more dangerous" meme. Players 100 years ago literally died on the field while playing the game. Check out the wikipedia page for sports players who've died during their careers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sportspeople_who_died_during_their_careers. From 1900 to 1925 it was about one college player ever two years. And how many teams playing at that time? Since 1967 only 1 player has died from on field injuries and it was a spinal cord incident.
Sure there are more diagnosed concussions today but I can't help but think that our ever increasing knowledge and detection of these injuries has created a lot of this fear where it should have been for a long time. I'm probably taking a leap here but I figure if people were DYING 100 years ago from head injuries, there were probably a lot of un-diagnosed concussions. It certainly doesn't make it right, but just looking for perspective.

When I lived abroad I used a sling box which worked fairly well. You have to have cable/satellite here though to transmit from so we just paid a friend a few dollars a month to have a box we could use with it. Maybe a little late to set up now but I don't miss a game in 2 years.

this is probably my favorite post ever because I just moved from Kentucky and your description of living there "done hard time there" couldn't be more accurate.

We've done relatively well holding teams to field goals after their long marches down the field instead of touchdowns (5th in scoring but 9th in yards). Is this a sign that we've been lucky and its likely to get worse or do we have a good red zone (bend but don't break) defense?
Western had two drives deep in M territory with a missed field goal and a drop on 4th and 1 in the end zone.
Indiana kicked 4 field goals from inside the 15 and missed 1 more and proved once again that being 5/6 in the red zone can be a problem.
I am worried that better teams are going to turn these into 6s instead of 3s.
|5 years 26 weeks ago||I agree with everybody else||
I agree with everybody else about the continuity pick. I think virtually any coach who runs something like a pro-style offense wins 8 or 9 games last year because half the team's starters don't jump ship without such a massive change coming. I think we beat Utah, Toledo, Notre Dame (7-6 last year!), Purdue, MSU, Northwestern. We were 1-4 in close games (7 points) and I bet we win every one of them with a defense that isn't throwing in the towel half way through the season and an offense with a couple more future NFL players on it.
I think Rich has a higher ceiling and I still think the future success will be worth the price of last season.

I am so excited that you called it the citrus bowl. I hate bowls named after a sponsor.

We are claiming we coule win the Big 10 after we beat a team who has gone 11-16 the last 2+ years. They might be improved but I'd also like to see them beat somebody good before we celebrate too much.

I'd like to see us win 1 Big 10 game before talking about championship. It might just be Indiana but its a milestone.
To win the Big 10 we probably have to beat OSU who probably won't lose more than 1 other Big 10 game. That might be possible if everything goes right but is probably unlikely yet again.

Brian did a post on this a couple years ago comparing Lloyd's record with a handful of current coaches against competition in the top 25 and is an interesting read. It doesn't have older coaches like Bo and Woody but gives you a reference to say that a couple games under 0.500 is pretty good against top 10 competition.

Tressel and Rod are friends, remember? They used to meet during the offseason to share strategy, plays, ect. Still it feels weird.

Does winning even matter to Rosenburg or is this just going to continue if we start rolling up 11 and 12 wins a season? They'll write that he is cheating to win then instead of being such a bad cheater and losing.

Fan day seems like it gets 1000 times better every year. I remember the first time I went I got 2 signatures, I think 5 years ago when it was on the field and you had to wait in lines for individual players. I'm glad to see the program opening up for the fans more each year.

Michigan has to be a great bet this year. We're underdogs in 6 (!) games already?? I can't believe we lose 6 games this year. Last year we within 7 points on the losing side of 4 games. I have to think we'll be 7 points better in each game this year.

If I never heard anything about the NFL for the rest of my life, I'd die a happy man. Give me people who care more about playing football than coming up with some great celebration.

Whats with all the complaining??? You guys know you aren't actually in Russia (probably) and they aren't actually forcing you to read and believe their propaganda right?
|6 years 17 weeks ago||leaders||
I agree there was a lack of leadership but I dont buy that the reason is because RR didnt appoint captains for the entire season. Leaders on athletic teams aren't appointed to become leaders, they are appointed because they are already the leaders of the team. Do you think Mike Hart was a leader last year only because he was appointed or because he was already a leader? Same with LaMarr Woodley the year before. These guys were appointed as captains because they were leaders, not leaders because they were appointed captains.
I personally like that Rich puts every senior on the team in the running to be a captain, essentially saying they are all leaders on the team and that they are all responsible for the teams success. I really think that will lead to stronger leadership in the future, not less.
The team was leaderless but not because of Rich's changes to the way captains are determined.

does anybody else out there think that its likely that we lose by more than 50? joepa has built up 10 years of frustration and I am guessing he wont show any mercy at all.
