I watched 1 scene from Suits…

I watched 1 scene from Suits and thought it was very dumb. The guy gets a job at a white shoe law firm because he like memorized a bar prep book. What?

I've been told I should give it another chance, but I figure there's too much good stuff out there to bother. Since you asked, I'm currently watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the final Curb season, and Twin Peaks: The Return (finally) and am enjoying all of those.

Haha, fair enough, but…

Haha, fair enough, but eventually you have to lose the status, right? For instance, Army and Pitt both actually qualify under the 3 national titles rule* (and, like ND, were independent for virtually all of their history), and I assume no one would argue that they're bluebloods?

*Yale, Princeton, Harvard, and Cornell would also qualify, but I think we can solve that problem by saying you also have to be a current FBS team.

I think this overweights…

I think this overweights stuff that happened a very long time ago. I don't think Nebraska can still be considered a blueblood when it (1) hasn't won a conference title in 25 years, (2) ranks outside the top 25 in AD revenue*, and (3) doesn't really have a path back to upper echelon (even if I do think Rhule will do a good job there).

*It kinda sucks that revenue is so important, but I think it has to be considered when talking about modern bluebloods. Per this list, 5 of your 8 bluebloods rank in the Top 10, 2 are not listed due to data unavailability (ND+USC are private), and the last one is Nebraska, which ranks 26th.

Looks like the deal is…

Looks like the deal is mainly a salary dump to get off the money we owed Bagley next year. Terrible signing by the Pistons.

For his part, Livers was having a pretty rough shooting year, hitting a career-worst 28.6% from 3.

You don't count the bowl…

You don't count the bowl games and still exclude undefeated Florida State?

Red always "pops" more than…

Red always "pops" more than blue, and virtually every Bama fan wears red (whereas Michigan is probably 70/30 blue/maize). I was there and agree that, if you just took a glance at the crowd you might assume something like a 55/45 pro-M split.

But once you heard the difference in crowd noise when each team was on offense it was obvious the split wasn't even close. Maybe as high as 75/25.

EDIT: Actually a lot of younger Bama women were wearing like black cocktail dresses, so I guess I would qualify my statement re: Bama fans thusly.

I'll add that I was in the…

I'll add that I was in the teeth of the "Bama Section" on Monday (behind the Bama band), and while there were definitely a few annoying dudes around us, I was still surrounded by a ton of M fans who I got to hug at the final whistle (and also some neutrals, who are likely to end up in the cheapest sections too).

And while I agree that it's best to be around fellow fans just because it's more fun to share the emotions, if this is at all motivated by fear of asshole UW fans, I live in Seattle and would say they're probably one of the chiller fanbases in the country. Still not a 0% risk, but much lower than if we were playing, say, Bama or OSU.

Best: Mel Tucker wouldn't…

Best: Mel Tucker wouldn't make it to the end of the year as MSU's coach.

Worst: The reason for the above

If you're making comparisons…

If you're making comparisons, just looking at passing yards *really* undersells it. The difference is much more striking if you consider rush yards and total TDs:

Daniels: 1,134 rush yards, 50 total TDs

JJ: 146 rush yards, 23 total TDs

Definitely not the case that…

Definitely not the case that the ACC runner-up will get in easily--most years they won't get in at all. (E.g., #15 Louisville this year, #13 FSU last year, etc.)

Re: Hibner and redshirts, I…

Re: Hibner and redshirts, I thought the postseason didn't count toward the four games redshirts are allowed to play (I think I heard that on an MGoPodcast).

I did a quick search, and it looks like that was a one-off waiver last year, not a permanent rule change. Anyone got any idea if there's talk of another waiver? That article is dated December 16, so it's possible it's still in the works for this year.

What? I bet every outlet…

What? I bet every outlet that mentions this hire talks about the controversy/history. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your point?

I was mostly being cheeky…

I was mostly being cheeky. But to answer your question, they could potentially sue for negligence, but to win they would need to prove (among other things) that they were actually harmed, and that the B1G's actions (or inaction) caused that harm. You generally can't sue someone based on an allegation that their actions could have been harmful.

Reckless endangerment is a…

Reckless endangerment is a crime, not a tort, so you can't really sue someone for it.

One minor quibble: if he was…

One minor quibble: if he was using the Ann Arbor property as a primary residence, it wouldn't qualify for a 1031 exchange.

I bet they were shocked-…

I bet they were shocked--SHOCKED--to find there was sign stealing going on in there

Any orders issued in this…

Any orders issued in this case are virtually certain to pop up on here almost immediately (for free):

(Also, if you spend time on PACER, download the RECAP browser extension.)

Green Bay was a 4-point…

Green Bay was a 4-point favorite (they had a playoff berth on the line). Tonight is apparently just the third time Detroit has been a favorite at Lambeau since 1992 (2012, 2017).

As much as I'd like this to…

As much as I'd like this to be true, there's no way MSU should be that low unless you believe this scandal will be absolutely devastating (and I don't see why it would be).

Since 2013, this is MSU compared to the five other teams in Tiers 3 and 4 plus Tier 2 UCLA COMBINED (6 teams total):

NY6 Bowls

  • MSU: 4
  • Other 6: 0

Conference Championships

  • MSU: 2
  • Other 6: 0

Wins vs OSU/Mich

  • MSU: 8
  • Other 6: 3

In addition, Michigan State's 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes outranked all 6 of those teams (and still outranked most of them in 2021, their recent nadir).

I thought he was setting…

I thought he was setting himself up for a "Michigan can sleep soundly about: Keon Coleman now plays for Florida State."

I also think it's too harsh,…

I also think it's too harsh, given what is actually alleged. That said, I imagine the reason is as you suggest--athletes at the same school are sort of like co-workers, and I can definitely imagine circumstances where they would be privy to non-public information about other SAs.

Similarly, I think Jameson Williams's suspension was way too harsh, and there I think the distinction they make is even harder to understand. If he was gambling on NFL games obviously it would be entirely different, but if you're going to allow betting generally (which they do), the idea that placing the bet in a hotel room during a team trip is worth 6 games while placing it at home is perfectly fine seems dumb.

I have mixed feelings about…

I have mixed feelings about how sports organizations are drawing up their rules on gambling in general, but as a matter of principle, it's not incoherent or hypocritical to come down more harshly on certain legal activities than you would certain illegal ones if the former directly impacts the integrity of the game and the latter does not.

I bet it's in the stadium by…

I bet it's in the stadium by next year.

As someone living in the PNW…

As someone living in the PNW, I have to disagree. Flights to Northwestern are quite a bit tougher because of the time change. It's hard not to blow an entire day (or redeye) on a west-to-east flight like that, whereas north-south flights can usually be done in an evening after work.

And Northwestern is sort of a cherry-picked example anyway, given that it's close to a massive airport and farther west than ~half the conference. Getting to PSU, IU, Rutgers, or MD for a weeknight game is dramatically more difficult (and more expensive) than ASU or Colorado.

Yep. Aliens are real, but…

Yep. Aliens are real, but they've never been here, nor anywhere close.

I would basically go so far…

On balance, they're tremendously good!

I wouldn't take for granted…

I wouldn't take for granted that taxes are 40% "at a minimum." The top federal rate is 37% (no FICA on lottery winnings), and like a third of the US population lives in states where there is no state income tax (including big ones like TX, FL, WA) or they don't tax lottery winnings (CA).

Then again, despite living in one of those states, I still never buy lottery tickets, so my expected winnings are exactly zero regardless of the tax treatment (still better than negative, I suppose).

Also, this is perhaps less…

Also, this is perhaps less helpful for Angry-Dad given that he's already there, but anyone have recommendations on what neighborhoods to target for lodging? I've never been, but am going to LSU-Florida in November and will be staying in NO. I'm prioritizing good food over heavy revelry, as I expect there will be plenty of the latter in Baton Rouge...

Oh man, Ferris State would…

Oh man, Ferris State would be fun but I really hope we can get a series with Maine. Used to have a pretty good rivalry going with them back in the 90s; would be nice to rekindle it.

There's a bit of the same…

There's a bit of the same phenomenon at work re: the Pistons and Darko. People sometime talk like the Pistons were being so obviously dumb for taking Darko over several Hall of Famers, but the vast majority of the NBA seemed to have the same assessment of Darko as the clear #2 in that draft.

Maybe someday they'll pay…

Maybe someday they'll pay their fair share of taxes on said real estate like the rest of us have to.

I think your friend is right and the store manager is misinformed (or possibly screwing with you):

Yeah that doesn't really…

Yeah that doesn't really make sense. You're not going to improve your conditioning over such a short time period, and trying would probably have negative short-term impacts on your stamina.  Isn't that the whole idea of like a taper (more a thing in endurance sports, but still likely applicable).

Yeah, there are some…

Yeah, there are some similarities, but the difference in speed is dramatic--and very relevant.

Fair point, but if you go…

Fair point, but if you go down that road it really calls into question including Michigan's (and anyone else's) pre-WWI (or even pre-1950) results in those numbers.

Astonishing and depressing?…

Astonishing and depressing? Jeez man, it's just an action TV show (I assume; I've never seen it).

Or maybe they only have one…

Or maybe they only have one camper van for sale, and "van's" is actually a contraction.

Good to hear, but I can't be…

Good to hear, but I can't be the only one who got scared seeing the words "blew out" in a title about a football player...

Ah missed that. Then yes,…

Ah missed that. Then yes, last one is that 2013 pair. Current status of the active series win droughts is a fun one:

Lions: 1st (31 years*)

Pistons: 4th (11 years)

Red Wings: 4th (14 years)

Tigers: 6th (9 years)

*That 1991 win is all that separates this streak from the preceding 33-year drought, which is neat.

Hasn't been quite that long:…

Hasn't been quite that long:

  • Pistons: 2019
  • Red Wings: 2016
  • Lions: 2015 (Jan 2016 game)
  • Tigers: 2014

Basically all of these were low-seeded, first round exits, but we're technically only at 4 years (and counting).

I think you're probably…

I think you're probably thinking of Brandon Herron, who had two defensive TDs (pick six + strip six) in the 2011 lightning-shortened opener vs. WMU.

Oh come on--this was…

Oh come on--I read this as basically a joke attempt to get past whatever filters Iowa's AD has set up to prevent opposing fans from doing this. If I'm reading this right, they weren't taking advantage of any discount they weren't already entitled to (by virtue of their size and, possibly, non-profit status), except for the fact that Iowa doesn't want opposing fans doing this as a matter of gamesmanship, not of any moral conviction.

Had they made it through, there would have been no real harm to the B+C Club, or any one else. I don't think "fraudulently posing as a children's org = morally reprehensible" is necessarily a bad heuristic, but in this case I think it's pretty harmless.

"Tongavaialoa" actually…

Never listened to Florio so no idea how he says it, but if it's something like "Tongavaialoa," that actually looks about right.

Tua himself says something like "tongue-oh-vī-loah", although I maybe detect a subtle extra syllable before "loah", which would make "Tongavaialoa" almost dead on.

You each have one and two…

You each have one and two decades on me, respectively, and I pretty much hate it, but I'm glad that he (+ ya'll) likes it and understand and respect that different people like different things.

You make it sound like this…

You make it sound like this was above board, and that he was just doing it for Harbaugh (presumably with permission). If that were the case, then isn't it unlikely this would be a criminal investigation, given that the police report mentioned "fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university email accounts without authorization", and that most of the laws in this area similarly refer to access "without authorization"?

Not an FL attorney, but as…

Not an FL attorney, but as others have said, I'm most concerned about your statement that "the home was left to my Mother in an agreement from her lawyer so now all in her name." It's very unclear what sort of document you're describing (a will? a grant of a life estate? a "contract" of some sort that may or may not be enforceable?) or who was even party to it, and the details there are critical to understanding the situation.

Assuming you're referring to…

Assuming you're referring to MGoDAO.

I'm generally very anti-crypto (and agree that it's basically a scam/ponzi scheme in general), but from what I understand, DAOs are one of the less objectionable (current) uses of the technology. Basically think of the NFTs as member cards, rather than as tradeable "investments" with no actual value behind them (which is what most NFTs are).

Just to clarify, SCOTUS did…

Just to clarify, SCOTUS did not strike down the rules which Bush was accused of violating. The SCOTUS decision said the NCAA can't limit the educational benefits NCAA athletes receive. Bush didn't get in trouble for receiving educational benefits.

The SCOTUS ruling happened around the same time the NIL rules got changed so they're often conflated, but the latter was mostly in response to states' forcing the NCAA's hand via legislation, not anything SCOTUS did.

(Though the Kavanaugh concurrence perhaps suggested the NIL rules wouldn't have fared well either if the did come before the Court.)

Whoa, look at Mr. Moneybags…

Whoa, look at Mr. Moneybags over here with a mortgage!
